Questioning speech, forgetting Canada

Posted: Thursday, July 24, 2008 3:35 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray
In his interview with NBC's Kelly O'Donnell, which will air on NBC's Nightly News tonight, McCain questions whether Obama should have given a speech in Berlin before becoming president.

"I would rather speak at a rally or a political gathering any place outside of the country after I am president of the United States," McCain told O'Donnell. "But that's a judgment that Sen. Obama and the American people will make."

However, on June 20, McCain himself gave a speech in Canada -- to the Economic Club of Canada -- in which he applauded NAFTA's successes. An implicit message behind that speech was that Obama had been critical of the trade accord. Also, McCain's trip to Canada was paid for by the campaign.

VIDEO: At a town hall in Pennsylvania, Republican presidential candidate John McCain says Obama's failure to understand the success of the surge in Iraq is a huge problem.

Other excerpts of O'Donnell's interview with McCain:
O'Donnell: Do you believe Obama really would be willing to lose the war in Iraq?
McCain: I think it’s very clear that he took the position that would enhance and maybe the reason why he won the nomination of his party. He doesn’t understand that the consequences of failure in Iraq would have disastrous consequences for America's national security. And he still doesn’t acknowledge that the surge succeeded, which is remarkable any rational observer who saw the conditions two years ago and sees them now.

O'Donnell: What is your best estimate in time for a significant drawdown [from Iraq]?
McCain: I'm sure by the end of my first term that we will be largely out of there.  But the point is, the reason that I cant set a specific date is because as Gen Petraeus says, we have to have the conditions on the ground.

I second jbentley and would add that the only consequences Mccain and the republicans are afraid of is not being able to get their hands on the oil fields of Iraq.

The republicans just shut down an attempt by democrats to open our surplus oil reserves in an attempt to lower gas prices.  The republicans stopped it- don't forget that in November.  It is not about supply/demand, it is about speculation.  What in the name of heaven will happen to us with Phil Gramm allowed to be in the cabinet of the White House.  Oh, my!  I shudder!
AND, once again, Gen. Patraeus seems to calling all shots with the president being led by the nose.
"But Canada is in the United States.  It's waaaaaaaay up there by Mississippi."  - JSM3
Canada wasn't a political rally speech.  Also Obama said he is for tearing down walls.  Why not the headline Obama voted for the wall on the mexican border.  Why not the headline obama flip flopped on wall on mexico border before univision.  Why not the headline Obama was against wall in israel in 2004 but then said he is for it.  Obama forgot could be the headline.  But no of course not.
Hello you guys are crazy!  McCain would NEVER give a speech like that and maybe 2 people would show up!

Where is the story about the speech First Read?

The trip to the troops paid for with CAMPAIGN MONEY would have been seen as political posturing.  And McCain would have slammed him for it . . . as would have Andrea Mitchell!

The key part is CAMPAIGN MONEY, you numskulls!

And these guys at the base were wounded, injured.  Why should he bring the circus of sniping reporters and pundits to add political BS to their world of pain?!

Good Call!!

You guys that have a problem should look deeper within yourselves.  McCain did the same thing during the Dem primary when he went to Iraq.  and he was looking "presidential".  No call that he was too "presumptive."

It makes me wonder . . .

I am getting the veiled message: "You"(your type) shouldn't be acting like "that".  You have this "otherness" to you.  You're "exotic."  Many of us have a problem seeing "you"(your type) in that role . . ."

Why don't you say that the N____ has passed his place?

That, to me, after almost 2 years on the campaign trail, is the only thing that makes sense.

You guys are perpetrating blatant RACISM!  And if you don't see it well . . . we are truly lost.

"what do we know about him?"

BS!!!!

You guys are reporters!!  YOU KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT ANYBODY YOU CHOOSE!!!!  HE"S BEEN AROUND FOR 18 MOS AND YOU ARE STILL ASKING THAT???!!!!

YOU ARE STILL SAYING "EXOTIC" AND "OTHERNESS" WHEN REFERRING TO HIM?!!??

HE IS AFRICAN AMERICAN. FULL STOP.

WHAT IS WITH THE FABRICATED MYSTERY, YOU GUYS!!??

ARE THEY SOMEHOW NOT AS ACCEPTABLE AS A WHITE MAN?!

ARE THEY LESS "AMERICAN", "STRANGE"??

You didn't refer to Bill Clinton like that back in 1992 nor did you to John Kerry in 2004 . . . and THEY WERE NOT WELL KNOWN!!

Yet somehow they pass the 'American Enough' test and Barrack doesn't?  State legislator for almost as long as Bill Clinton was governor or in public service and somehow "there is this otherness to him . . .", ". . . he's exotic . . ."??!!

The only reason that any person can think of for the "difference" in description is because the man is black.

You guys, Chuck, Joe, Mika and the petulant Andrea Mitchell need to get a hold of yourselves!  You slips are showing!

Oh by the way:  I'm white!

Tim Russert they need you!
Can SOMEONE in the MSM (hint, hint First Read) call this incompetent doddering old fool out for his MANY gaffes, misinterpretations, misunderstandings and downright lies? He totally botched the timeline on the surge, he gave a speech in Canada and Colombia; he thinks Iraq borders Afghanistan, he does not understand the fundamentals of the politics in Iraq (Sunni vs Shi'ites), nor the economy by his own admission; and most importantly his whole campaign is based on bashing Obama. He NEVER delineates ANY of his platforms, positions or ideas.
Yet enablers like Andrea Mitchell, Katie Couric, George Stephanopolos and others continually make excuses for his gaffes and inadequacies.

First Read: you are the network of Huntley and Brinkley, John Chancellor, and Tim Russert. For the love of God, integrity, and all that is noble about journalism, please do some objective reporting on John McCain. Please assign someone to objectively question this person who aspires to the highest office in the land.
Compared to the historical, thorough, forthright, and  ethical news people who have worked at NBC, Andrea Mitchell is an unabashed embarrassment for your network. Please assign an objective reporter to question the candidates; this biased blatant favoritism Mitchell portrays is an insult to all the great news people who have ever labored for NBC.
I have liked kelly since she was reporting out of cleveland (note where I am from). I am going to have to ask her to remember to cup the old mans balls. You cant let them babies hang down to his knees when doing this type of interview. It could give him back problems.
Well, McCain's trip to Canada was well over a month ago. How is he supposed to remember that?

Paul,

You are so right. The elderly can remember with great detail what may have happened in their childhood, incredibly enough. The long term memory remains very strong. However, their short term memory becomes a problem for them when senility sets in.
If you think about it for a minute, Canada is really easily forgotten.
Shame on Kelly O'Donnell. I don't think Mr. Russert would be proud of her. Does anyone know why MSNBC is becoming more and more like FIX News?
That's okay. Bush forgot Canada after it took in thousands of stranded US-bound travellers on 911. It's a Republican trait.
McDunce at it again, oops I forgot what country I was talking about.
1st,John McCain SHUT UP. 2nd, Had JFK listened to his Generals and his intellegence people durning those dangerous days in October, we would not be here to have these conversations. So much for letting the military call the shots. The President's job is to do what is in the best intrest of the people, not those who have their own agenda.
When was the last time McCain spoke in front of 100,000 people????

Diane from Illinois (Sent Thursday, July 24, 2008 3:51 PM)

That seems to be important to many radical left wingers. The question is why? It's almost like a popularity thing back in high school where you were upset if you weren't prom queen or senior class president. Frankly, I think people that require this kind of admiration have mental issues they need to dealt with.
Obama's trip was purely a campaign trip, regardless of what he says. He had a few years to visit Iraq and Afghanistan, but didn't. Why all of a sudden? It couldn't be because of an election coming up could it? He wouldn't do that would he? Isn't that being just what he says he wants to change? A Typical Politician.
The speech did draw from the Great Republican Ronald Reagan's "Tear down that Wall" speech, as you can clearly tell when he started talking about walls. And then the Kennedy touch with "It's our time".
In respone to Pat Huntington, if there is no Iraq war, why do all politicians call it a war? The Korean war was never declared a war by Congress either, but it's still called a war!
we have to have the conditions on the ground.
------------------------------------------------------

Ok McCoo-Coo, can you tell us what those conditions are?  Can you explain what they look like?

I'll just say this... if the Iraqi's want us out in 16 months and we don't get out... we are clearly occupiers.  If they tell us to get out tomorrow, how's that defeat, Johnnie Boy?
McCain is just having another Senior Moment.  Add in his knock about Obama traveling out of the country while people here are suffering.  He forgot that he was in Colombia and Mexico earlier in July.  Another Senior Moment.

June was a long time ago.  Early July was a long time ago.  It slipped his mind.  Or the Campaign Has Changes since 9/11... or The Surge... or just Changed because he said so.

McCain is the worst major party presidential nominee in the history of the country.  Every day has another one of these.  If the Main Stream Media wasn't so in love with him, and at times actively cheerleading him, it would be obvious to everyone except for the Fox News crowd.  Just awful.
McCain didn't pass out fliers on his trip to canada to attend a political rally with bands.  To compare the trips is why they call it the liberal media bias.  Obama has flip flopped on the walls on our southern border which he voted for but is now against on the wall in israel which he was against before he is for it.  Why not headlines about Obama forgetting.  Obama has been all over the map on nafta in 2004 saying it had been great for illinios then against it then for it.
