More 'Dr. No'

From NBC’s Alex Wall
Two of McCain’s policy advisors painted Obama as “Dr. No” on energy policy in a conference call held by the campaign this morning. Senior Policy Advisers Doug Holtz-Eakin and Nancy Pfotenhauer stressed the contrast between McCain and Obama’s positions on offshore drilling and the expansion of nuclear energy.

Holtz-Eakin argued that McCain’s support for the expansion of domestic energy production would bring down gas prices, stressing that the diversification of domestic production would make the U.S. less dependent on foreign oil.

VIDEO: John McCain seized a golden opportunity to talk energy and the economy, launching a new ad attacking Barack Obama on rising gas prices. A Race for the White House panel discusses.

“If you talk to any member of the environmental community, everything has to be on the table…coal, oil, nuclear and alternative [energy sources],” Holtz-Eakin said. “John McCain has said to me on numerous occasions, this is the right thing for the economy, the right thing for national security.” He later added, “Obama has said, ‘No,’ to offshore drilling, ‘No,’ to coal, ‘No’ to [nuclear power]. His policy will ensure that we will have no new energy supplies.”

On Florida and offshore drilling: While discussing McCain’s support of offshore drilling, Holtz-Eakin argued that, “states that traditionally don’t support drilling…like Florida are [now] supporting drilling.” Holtz-Eakin went on to suggest that this change in public opinion shows increasing support for McCain’s energy policies.

you guys are reporting on another 60's reference from the mccain campaign's phone conference but have yet to report anything in detail regarding the Berlin speech....very interesting to see how easily your strings can be pulled....

from a loyal reader: regain the backbone, firstread!
I'm totally being sensored today,

Paul - got some good stuff for you on Rachel Maddow and Joe Scarborough - google it or go to youtube.  Also, LMAO at your 'don't bite' joke yesterday.

I'd rather have Dr No moniker than Manchurian Candidate and Dr. Strangelove.  Of course it is a pretzel leap, circular error to follow McCain's position on anything.
"Mini-Me McBush" can't seem to get off of the name calling, can he? Wasn't he the one saying he wanted a positive campaign?
What a bunch of garabage. Did you forget that went to Canada Senator Mccain?

No Floridian wants offshore drilling.  We want cheaper gas now you tard.
oops, Gary was the shout out for the funny joke, not paul - my bad.

being censored today,...not sure why.  Nothing crude in the last three posts.  Must have pissed Domenico off.
Have you heard the latest remarks from McCain? He links the latest drop in price of oil futures to GWB's executive order to lift offshore drilling ban, in his townhall address yesterday. Can someone explain the logic behind this?

How can a supply of oil, in a best best best case scenario, that comes out in 7 to 10 yrs from now, can scare the speculators to dump the Sept 2008 oil futures? I hope some sane reporter puts this question to him. I can't believe he is stooping to
such low levels to misinform voters. May be the hardcore repubs, who will vote him under any circumstance, buy this BS, but how can he gain any independent support with such senseless remarks? Doesn't he understand that this will damage his
reputation among ind voters. This is worse than the gas tax relief gimmick.

I have a question for those people who support offshore drilling. According to government records and factcheck.org, there are 68 million acres of leased areas ( both offshore and onshore ) available for drilling which are yet to be explored by the
oil companies. Why is it necessary to add more areas to this pool, by allowing offshore drilling? Its very unlikely that Big oil companies will be asking for more land for drilling as they already have so much leased land that needs exploration and they spend so little money for oil exploration ( < 10 % of their profits, there was an article on this over the weekend on MSNBC).
It will be years before they finish exploring the availble areas.

So why does John Mccain, along with GWB, raise this issue again and again, as an important measure to lower oil prices?
The only answer I can come to is, to give a false impression to the voters that they are doing something to address the issue.
Nothing but another election gimmick. Everybody knows that nothing can be done from supply side to effect the price of oil futures, but these guys want to gain political mileage out of a middle class pocket book issue. How Pathetic.
Not only he misleads the public with his stance on this issue, but also attacks Obama relentlessly for not supporting this stupid idea.

This kind of campaign might gain him some support in the short term, but as voters get more informed of this issue, I am sure they understand his real intentions.
I also see that after a week of incredible coverage the poll numbers are still the same (fox and the two tracking polls).  The big thing in the Fox poll is that 75% want an increase in drilling for oil and that includes 60% - 66% of democrats.  Must be pretty depressing for all of you suffering from true believer syndrome.

BTW The Gallup tracking poll includes cell phones only users.

Here's hoping America says NO to John McCain and his merry band of loose lipped liars.

P.S. They are off message, the forgot to say "the surge worked".

Why don't the oil companies drill on the 68 million acres they currently own/lease?  And, as I recall, Obama hasn't said "no" to nuclear - he just said we had to insure safe disposal of nuclear waste.
Even T. Boone Pickins is investing in wind energy.  He is running ads here in Texas saying that drilling is not the answer.  He is a "Dr. No" too?

Why is McCain ignoring Obama's detailed plans for developing alternative energy sources, using clean coal, etc.?  Are they too sophisticated for him to read?
where's your post about obama's speech?
What does a Republican who grows a conscience look like? T. Boone Pickens.
I read an article a few months back in the Kansas City Star called little oil and big oil. There are more funcitoning oil wells in Kansas producing 3.3 barrels of oil a day than in all of Iraq. The people are not pumping the wells because it was not cost worthy. With the price of oil today, this is not the case. Some people in Kansas are starting up the wells again. Oklahoma is building roads in Kansas to drill for natural gas and this is going to be a booming business. I own 5 oil wells in Illinois and with new technology with the pipes that can now go horizonally, there is oil in Illinois. In MT. Vernon, Illinois where I was raised is the largest open coal mine in the world. People in Mt Vernon are working on coal gassification production. We do not need to go offshore with the resource that we already have. I wonder why noone is bringing up these issures. The only answer that I received is that Bush wants to hold them in case we need to go to another war. It's a shame that we are not looking into these alternatives more. Let's also not forget all the oil in Oklahoma.
Are these guys serious? The only drilling option that may be benifical is the one that gives these guys a lobotomy.
For 26 years McCain has voted consistenly against alternative energy strategies and with the oil companies.  Who is Dr. No.

His energy policy, best as I can tell, has been a gas tax holiday and off-shore drilling which will have no effect on supply for 10 years or so.

WE HAVE EXPERTS WHO ARE CALLED ECONOMIST THAT ARE HIGHLY QUALIFIED TO CRAFT AND MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS TO CONGRESS OUTLINING HOW TO GET OUT OF THIS ENERGY MESS.

POLITICIANS HAVE NO BUSINESS COMING UP WITH ALTERNATIVES THAT COULD PUT OUR COUNTRY SIGNIFICANT RISK FOR FAILURE AND OUR CHILDRENS FUTURES.

WE THE PEOPLE ARE SICK AND TRIED OF POLITICIANS TRYING TO TELL US HOW TO FIX THE ENERGY THAT'S LIKE ASKING A MECHANIC TO BUILD A HOUSE OR A BEAUTY SALON TO FIX YOUR CAR.

THESE POLITICIANS ARE NOT EXPERTS ON OUR ENEGRY CRISIS IF THEY WERE THEN THEY HAVE A LOT OF EXPLAINING TO DO ABOUT HOW THEY SAT BACK AND WATCHED WHILE WE GOT INTO THIS MESS

ESPECIALLY MCCAIN WHO'S BEEN IN CONGRESS FOR 3, COUNT THEM 3 DECADES AND OFFERED NOTHING, PROPOSED NO ENERGY FIXES, BUT NOW HE'S THE EXPERT?

SEN. MCCAIN SHOULD REALIZE THAT INSULTING THE INTELLECT OF WE THE PEOPLE IS NOT WORKING IN 2008 WE LEARNED OUR LESSON IN 2000.

OUR LIVELYHOOD AND OUR CHILDREN'S LIVES AND FUTURES ARE AT STAKE.  WE UNDERSTAND THAT SEN. MCCAIN CAN'T GET HIS HEAD AROUND ECONOMICS BECAUSE HE'S "RICH" AND OUT OF TOUCH.

RESOLVING THE ENERGY IS NO DIFFERENT THAN SOLVING A PROBLEM ON ANY JOB.  DEFER TO THE EXPERTS FOR A PLAN WITH ALTERNATIVES, PRESENT IT TO CONGRESS AND LET THEM TAKE IT FROM THERE.

THERE ARE NO QUICK FIXES, DRILLING AND TEARING UP OUR SHORES WON'T DO IT AND WE WILL STILL BE DEPENDENT UPON FOREING OIL.  APPARENTLY THE POLITICIANS HAVE LEARNED NOTHING.
Could these guys get any more shrill? They sound like the sterotyped hen party where voices focus on the one hen that didn't attend. Ugh!  If this is supposed to be an American statesman, an adult, then McCain had better rein in his posse. If they think this is working against Obama, they obviously haven't gotten the idea how demeaning it is to whine. get out there and do something worth reporting on, for crying out loud, or shut up.
Here's a question if we have more nuke plants can't another country accuse us of trying to make more nuke weapons? Just a question Mr. McCain.
Hey First Read, please understand that this is not criticism; but could you guys do some digging on how the Republicans have blocked the attempt to release some of the National Oil Reserves to help drive down prices right now?!! I am curious which republicans wanted to block this effort!!
Does McCain even know what he supports from one day to the next?  This guy is clearly senile, incompetent and frankly not that smart.  Not exactly POTUS material.
It's gotten to the point that whatever McCain is in support of (with the exception of love of country) I would have to give it extra scrutiny.  Mavwack is not a well man.  I'm starting to believe the stories about wife beating, too.  Seriously, his cheese may have slipped off the cracker.  Voting for this man would be like giving a 4 year old a .357...it's irresponsible if you care about this country.
Problem is, we haven't heard any American oil companies clamoring to drill off Florida. Maybe Charlie Crist will be able to get the UAE to do his drilling for him?  And maybe they will throw in free security for the port of Miami.

Pew poll of Hispanic voters:

Obama 66, McCain 23

In New Mexico Hispanics make up 37% of the state's eligible electorate, in Florida 14%, in Nevada 12%, and in Colorado 12%.

Kerry states + Iowa + New Mexico + Colorado = 273 EV

Kerry states +IA +NM +CO -NH = 269 EV and the presidency almost certainly to Obama.
First Read: Where is your coverage of Obama's speech in Berlin?  Surely that is more newsworthy than a lost paper he wrote 25 years ago or McCain's repetitive name-calling.

You've just about lost my patronage!
McCain= mentally and physically incapable of being the POTUS.

OBAMA/BIDEN, 2008!
Nationalize the property and then listen. Now Exxon owns the oil that they find and can export it all. When do they want to tell the us that oil is sold on the world market.  We export 1,600,000 barrels a day now.  Drill there, drill now.  As long as the offshore oil rigs are 100% utilized, they can drill anywhere.
I think that we need some greater amount of research into making different forms of ethanol as well as new types of fission reactors that can use the various elements left over after fuel reprocessing.  Oil and coal are going to be to costly for enviromental reasons really soon.  Why is there this clining to fossil fuels by McCain.  Unless McCain is going to mandate CO2 emssions (and other gasses) capture, coal and oil plants aren't worth the long term investment.  Make solar and fusion the priority.
Seriously, First Read?

After THAT speech, THIS is what you report? Is the RNC padding your paychecks?

The Republicans are sad, sorry excuses for humanity. They have nothing else to do but wait to pounce on every little thing and criticize Obama at every single turn...with obscenely outdated analogies, I might add...because it's not like they have a candidate  worthy of any time and energy...that much is obvious.

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!

Can you smell the desperation?
Senator McCain is the one who has turned on his heels from his long held energy policy of standing against drilling. He's selling us, and the planet out. He's the one who has put winning a campaign before all else.
Would giving Obama the same nickname as Ron Paul benefit McCain?  I doubt it, and certainly not at a time when people are increasingly concerned about violations of the Constitution, and want someone who would respect it.

We need new energy, but our world is pretty much falling apart, and we should not dig a deeper ecological grave.  The Texas move toward more wind power seems much nicer, and should be examined by all states in an energy crunch.
For 26 years McCain has voted consistenly against alternative energy strategies and with the oil companies.  Who is Dr. No.
--------------------------------------------
Sorry, pal, it was your boy Obama who voted to give the oil companies the big tax breaks a few years ago in that ridiculous energy bill.  Even the economists called it a Christmas tree for the oil companies-McCain voted no.
The 'Bobbing Heads' have had their springs wound by McCain's deceptive ads and other distortions, including revisionists Iraqi war history along with help from CBS News. I really have to question the polling mix and other criteria for those surveyed as McCain's ad buys are focused on the lessor informed voters.
To imply that the announcement of offshore drilling pushed the price of oil down is an outright lie. McLame knows it, the MSM knows it, and yet he gets another free pass.
NBC, remember your news heritage. Don't let McLame state blatant lies without the free press challenging those statements.
There Sen. McCain goes with that Out of Touch Stragety again and his Republicans Friends, "Do Anything and Say Anything to Win at all Cost and Screw the American People who are paying your salary.

The, "You American Taxpayers sent me to Congress and I ignored you so I could get Powerful and Rich because you Americans who pay my check let me get away with it.

Because you Americans/Taxpayers who sent me to Congress for the past 3 DECADES won't hold me accountable to look out for your best interest.

Since you Americans/Taxpayers did not, I looked out for MINE.

Since this stunt has worked so well for 3 Decades I'm trying it again and again because I don't think you will take time out of your busy day even though you are getting the shaft economically, to stop me.
ohhhh nooooo...
they have brought back
Dr. NO!

They need some new blood at the McSAME Camplain!
Hey First Read, please understand that this is not criticism; but could you guys do some digging on how the Republicans have blocked the attempt to release some of the National Oil Reserves to help drive down prices right now?!! I am curious which republicans wanted to block this effort!!
GA GUY

I can answer that for you GA. Two things. The reserves are just that. If for what ever reason some of our supply was cut off, we'd have an emergency reserve that we could use for a period of weeks or a couple of months. Second, releasing all the reserves would reduce the price at the pump by a couple of pennies. Not really worth the risk, and very irresponsible. Doing so would show a critcial lack of judgement, but I guess thats why the Dems are for it.

Hope that helps you.
On Florida and offshore drilling: While discussing McCain’s support of offshore drilling, Holtz-Eakin argued that, “states that traditionally don’t support drilling…like Florida are [now] supporting drilling.” Holtz-Eakin went on to suggest that this change in public opinion shows increasing support for McCain’s energy policies.
.............................................
Florida supports off-shore drilling, what a surprise.

Florida governor Charlies Crist was an early McCain supporter and wants to be VP.  This would be news if he came out against off-shore drilling.

Except Florida does NOT support off-shore drilling, nor do we stand behind whatever other moronic statements our spray-tanned "governor" makes.
Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah.  Mr.Holtz-Eakin please explain why the republicans on the hill shut down the democrats in an attempt to get the reserves open in order to bring gas prices down!  The republicans are the ones that are arrogant and presumptive in thinking that their actions will not be noticed by the voters.

I've noticed that the republicans are adept at name-calling.  Dr. No  -- at least it's a title.  How about Dr. Nomorecrapfromrepublicans ?
Raj K- your post is exactly correct.  I have been posting for weeks about this issue.  Now if only there is some way we could educate the low info voter.  McCain should be bulking up his committment to Renewable sources instead of this publicity stunt the GOP has come with to try and save their skins.  Not only is it completely ineffective for at least 10 years, it is giving big Oil exactly what they want - More reserves to sit on and not drill for until the price is really, really high.  Holding more reserves gives their stock a boost (trust me I know how this works, I'm a finance person for a natural gas company).

The media should be exposing the GOP's trickery, but as always, they are failing to do their job.

They can't be bothered to keep disputing the lies McCain is telling.  Obama has said no to additional off-shore drilling, Florida's residents have not said yes (lie #1).  Obama is also for clean coal and safe nuclear use (lies 2 &3).  These are serious times and issues for our country.  The press should be informing the voters about where the candidates stand on the issues and on what those stances mean.  But its become more of a gossip reporting than journalism.
Obama has NEVER said he's against nuclear power, but there is that little problem over what do to with the WASTE, which McCain never talks about.

Oil companies do not need more places to drill – they are sitting on 68 million acres of federal lands, that they have already leased but have not developed for drilling. Drilling in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge wouldn’t yield any oil for 10 years—and then would only save the consumer 1.8 cents per gallon in 2025. We can’t drill our way to energy independence. Does McCain have a response about the oil spill in the Mississippi River???
mccain and his energy policies are both dinosaurs, the time to drill has long since past, tax the oil companies and invest it in alternative energy, we are just going to have to bite the bullet and do it, tax the hell out of gas guzzlers or better yet just out-law them. it will be painful for all and the government needs to make sure the pain gets spread among the wealthy and not just the poor
