Obama delivers speech before 200,000

Posted: Thursday, July 24, 2008 4:10 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones

BERLIN, Germany -- In the most anticipated public event of his five-country swing through Europe and the Middle East, Obama today addressed a crowd of more than 200,000 people at Tiergarten Park here, calling upon Americans and Europeans to work together to fight terrorism, poverty, genocide, climate change and to work toward a world without nuclear weapons.

He also touched on the need for peace in the Middle East, a strong European Union, and a free and fair trade system.

VIDEO: Speaking before an enormous crowd in Berlin, Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama warned against 'walls' between 'allies,...races and trives, natives and immigrants, Christian and Muslim and Jew.'

The presumptive Democratic nominee -- who was greeted with several chants of “Yes we Can” and was frequently interrupted by cheers and applause -- returned to his common campaign themes of unity, hope, and the need to seize the moment. He also repeated a favorite phrase, “This is our moment,” several times throughout his roughly half-hour speech, which acknowledged about the need to repair the relationship between America and its allies.

“In Europe, the view that America is part of what has gone wrong in our world -- rather than a force to help make it right -- has become all too common,” he told a crowd that stretched about a mile from his stage in front of the Victory Column to the Brandenburg Gate. “In America, there are voices that deride and deny the importance of Europe’s role in our security and our future. Both views miss the truth.”

Obama stressed at the beginning of his speech that he was speaking as a citizen of the world, not as a candidate for president. He touched on Berlin’s Cold War past and of the aid America provided the city and the continent through the Marshall Plan. He said the city’s people “kept the flame of hope burning” and that “this city, of all cities, knows the dream of freedom.”

The campaign said last week it had chosen Berlin, the city where John F. Kennedy gave his famous "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech in 1963, because of its unique place in the history of the 20th century and because of Obama's desire to highlight the need to cooperate as closely with America's European allies in the 21st century as it did in the last.

Obama called the speech "A World that Stands as One," and he told the crowd it was important to remember that while there would be differences between the United States and its allies, no country could stand alone in fighting modern challenges. He drew applause when he said that true partnership and progress required constant work, as well as the will to listen to each other and to trust each other.

"That is why America cannot turn inward. That is why Europe cannot turn inward. America has no better partner than Europe," he said. "Now is the time to build new bridges across the globe as strong as the one that binds us across the Atlantic. Now is the time to join together, through constant cooperation and strong institutions and shared sacrifice and a global commitment to progress, to meet the challenges of the 21st century.”

This was one of the most closely-watched speeches of Obama's campaign, and his advisers seemed particularly concerned about stressing that it would not be "political" -- with the senator telling reporters on the flight from Tel Aviv this morning that it would not be a "wonky" policy address. It came smack dab in the middle of a general election campaign against his Republican opponent, John McCain, with whom at least one recent poll showed voters feel more comfortable with on foreign policy issues.

Some controversy surrounded the event in its planning stages when reports came out that Obama had sought to hold it at the Brandenburg Gate, an 18th-century monument that became a symbol of the Cold War and is now a symbol of a reunified Germany. Ronald Reagan delivered his famous "tear down this wall" speech at the gate in 1987.

Obama made reference to the Berlin Wall, saying the walls that still exist today between old allies on either side of the Atlantic -- between rich and poor countries; between "races and tribes, natives and immigrants, Christian and Muslim and Jew" must be torn down.

And he acknowledged America's imperfections. "I know my country has not perfected itself. At times, we’ve struggled to keep the promise of liberty and equality for all of our people," he said. "We’ve made our share of mistakes, and there are times when our actions around the world have not lived up to our best intentions. But I also know how much I love America.”

"People of Berlin -- people of the world -- this is our moment. This is our time," Obama said in closing.

The McCain campaign responded by calling the speech premature. "While Barack Obama took a premature victory lap today in the heart of Berlin, proclaiming himself a 'citizen of the world,' John McCain continued to make his case to the American citizens who will decide this election," spokesman Tucker Bounds said in an emailed statement. "Barack Obama offered eloquent praise for this country, but the contrast is clear. John McCain has dedicated his life to serving, improving and protecting America. Barack Obama spent an afternoon talking about it."

World….meet Barack Obama.

“People of the world, now do your duty.  Look at Berlin”

“There is no challenge too great for a world that stands as one.”

“The old divisions, the old walls cannot stand.  The old religious divisions cannot stand”

"This is the moment when we must defeat terror and dry up the well of extremism

“Let us remake the world again”

This was a speech meant for the world.  It’s a whole different dynamic. The size and the enthusiasm of the crowd, not just in Germany, but around the world.  Call it charisma. Call it intellectual curiosity.  Call it what is, a vision of global politics that re-engages our now antagonized allies and looks forward to engaging those nations we have differences with.  The Europeans see this huge pivot in American policy.  American’s, at least according to the most recent polls, still need to be convinced.  According to the foreign press, European leaders are eagerly awaiting an Obama presidency.  There is no enthusiasm gap.

In Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel and now Europe, he has demonstrated a Presidential presence that we have not seen in 8 years.  The visuals have been incredible.  His reception by foreign leaders and their enthusiastic rhetoric for his positions is unceasing.  IF he hasn’t closed the gap on both his commander-in-chief and foreign policy credentials he never will.  Just compare the multiple gaffes McCain has made in both areas, just this week, and the choice becomes relatively easy.

If anyone questions his patriotism, listen to this speech and his description of his love for this country, his affirmation of American values. His biography.  His unprecedented journey.

Yep, this is our moment, this is our time. This is our chance to change the direction of global diplomacy and define the direction the US should be headed in for the 21st century.

Obama ’08.
Johnny McSame would take a victory lap, but he's afraid he'd forget where he was and get lost half-way through.
The only way John MCShame can get a crowd of 200,000 people anywhere is for him to scotch tape $100 bills to his bottom.
Wow I guess that feels a lot better than one reporter/photographer to meet McBush at an airport.  A lot more fun than riding a golf caught with Ole #41 who actually looks younger than McBush. No the Change I Believe In is that America can gain back it's good standing in the Worlds View of us When 200,000 people come out to see one of our POTUS candidates. Sorry John dont hate the player  hate the game.
Chuck Todd
Here's what I underestimated, how low the bar some in the media set for Obama for this trip and how much the people at the places he was visiting (including Patraeus and the folks in Israel etc.) wanted to impress Obama. It turned into a mutual lovefest for all involved and made it nearly impossible for Obama to fail on this trip.
I am not thrilled with Chuck’s comment regarding expectations for Obama and his trip abroad.  It is very demeaning/diminishing.  “we set the bar so low that, of course, he made it look easy.”  While domestically, McCain has had essentially a ‘gaffe a day’ with MINIMAL scrutiny.  The absurdity is too much.  People are sick of racism; but it seems from my vantage that Obama has to be ‘near perfect’ just to be acceptable and the old white guy just needs to maintain a pulse.

This was one of the most moving things I've ever witnessed.  Can anyone imagine 200,000 Americans showing up to hear Gordon or Merkel?

I think the world has hope, too.  I hope it's contagious.  And if liberalism is a disease, I don't want to be cured.  Personally, I think it's the vaccine for the pox the Repubs have placed on our house.
My family and Friends watched the Entire speech and we have never been more proud.  Finally we have a Presidential Nominee who cares about our position in the World, Stopping, War, Feeding the Hungry and working together in the world as one, United.

Thank you Senator Obama.  Those 200,000+folk did not show up for Rhetoric, they showed up to see if the American Candidate would tell them that they matter and that the US will work together with the world and stop operating in a vaccum and going it alone when others disagree, DIPLOMACY>
I wonder how many people will crowd the Washington Mall to witness his Inuguration Address?
Another great speech by Obama. It was thrilling to see the "free world" embracing its future leader so whole-heartedly. Europe wants to see America restored to its former greatness.

Hilarious reaction from McCain camp.  It seems that all they do lately is react to everything Obama does.  Maybe McCain should try doing something of his own, rather than constantly trying to quell exitement about Obama.  Sorry McCain - you're not going to rain on his parade!
Hi FR:

I was wondering who wrote Obama's speech?  We know he can read so what's the big deal?

I would rather him be here in the US letting Americans know what the heck he plans to do for us!!!

I know his heart was crushed that he didn't have the same backdrop for his photo op as Kennedy and Regan did but enough is enough.

I want the MSM to play fair.  Why didn't Katie, Charlie and Brian go overseas when McCain went back in March?  Can anyone answer that.

I am not voting for the next American Idol but for POTUS.  Right now McCain is the one acting more Presidental seeing that he is here talking about the problems that Americans have...not making a spectical out of himself with 200,000 Germans cheering him like he was a king or something.

I was a Hillary supporter and still am.  I have tried to warm up to Obama but he hasn't given me any and I mean any reason to....
FINALLY! (Why did it take so long to post this?)

I am SO proud of him! =D
Awesome speech!  200,000 people.  wow...they want a better world and change as much as the American people.  Thank-you MSNBC for providing the full web-cast.  To quote Chris Matthews, I felt a chill furrowing up my leg. (I'm not kidding...as a patriotic American its impossible to listen to that and NOT get chills).
Wow, cool...

"That would explain him asking Congress to authorize his use of force in Iraq, when he didn't have to ask.
Liberals. Blinded by the light of something shiny like Obama.
Taylor Dukaine (Sent Thursday, July 24, 2008 11:00 AM)"

Taylor - sorry, I must've missed a poli-sci class somewhere...or maybe I've been out of high school too long...

Last I knew, yes the President DOES have to ask Congress if he wants to use our armed forces to invade other countries.

Also - that shine you are seeing is off of McCheese's bald head.
Barack Obama Makes me proud to be an American!
Everyone is trying to say Obama is loosing ground all you have to do is go to real clear politics listed below and look at the electoral count thus far based on state by state polling data.

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/maps/obama_vs_mccain/?map=10

Obama has only begun to campaign the real surge in this campaign has yet to start.
He made me proud to be an American again!!!
200,000! This is wonderful! How many do you think will be voting for Obama in November?
Yes, he did and it was Awesome!  I loved it!  No amount of criticism from mccain can take that away!

Senator Obama did an outstanding job.  He makes me proud to be an American.  Then I hear the mccain camp and I want to move overseas.
"Barack Obama offered eloquent praise for this country, but the contrast is clear..."

that's right, One is eloquent and the other, not so much.
Better late than never First Read, although the post is not very informative and offers little analysis.

Why is the McCain campaign so bitter?

Why must they make a snarky comment about EVERYTHING Senator Obama does?

Sometimes SILENCE really is GOLDEN!

I fear for the mental health of the Americans supporting such a whiny, forgetful guy for President. Seems like alot of Americans are still suffering from Post Tramatic Stress Disorder after 7 1/2 years of the Bush Administration.

Here's hoping they can snap out of it before its too late.

P.S. BRAVO Senator Obama - you made America proud!
It's amazing how many Germans show up when free beer is served.
Yes, he did and it was Awesome!  I loved it!  No amount of criticism from mccain can take that away!

Senator Obama did an outstanding job.  He makes me proud to be an American.  Then I hear the mccain camp and I want to move overseas.
I wonder how many people will crowd the Washington Mall to witness his Inuguration Address?
Chuk, NY (Sent Thursday, July 24, 2008 4:24 PM)

I am planning on being there,...
"Barack Obama offered eloquent praise for this country, but the contrast is clear. John McCain has dedicated his life to serving, improving and protecting America
...............................................
John McCain wanted to invade Iraq in 1998, 5 years befor the actual invasion.  John McCain voted for a war that was based on lies, deception and fear-mongering.  The war in Iraq has not made us any safer than we were pre 9/11. We should have been fighting the people that killed 3000 Americans.  We should have never allowed the Taliban to regroup. We now have to re-fight a war we had won, a task that would have been unecessary if judgement was exercised by Mr. McCain.

If this protecting America, I give up.

This is a tuffy = Obama calls America and Europe to create a better world with our best intentions and McCain calls us to ... what? quit whinning?
Meanwhile, in other breaking news, John McLame was greeted by an enthusiastic throng of 5-7 people at Schmidt's German Restaurant in German Village, Ohio:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/07/24/mccain-plays-catch-up-att_n_114761.html
There are reports he dined on the "Hoffbrau Schnitzel".
Wow. Can't make this stuff up.
Pathetic.
I wonder how many people will crowd the Washington Mall to witness his Inuguration Address

None, he won't be there !
Well . . . I McCain talking about his military service . . . again as 'qualification' for POTUS??

Is this the same thing that they scolded Gen. Clark for saying??

It is clear that he's doing that.

McCain Prostituting his Military service . . . again!!!

So what. Adolph drew about the same. The Germans have a history of loving to listen to nonsensical politicians.
Linda in Boston,

Just curious as to why you supported Hillary? Are you voting on issues?  Because if you are, then Obama is certainly closer to Hillary than McCain.  What is it that actually moves you as a voter.  I mean to disrespect, I just really wnat to know.
What Obama established in Berlin was that the U.S. has a 'hope' of renewed faith and trust in the world community of nations -- provided there is the right leadership at the helm. He hit the 'fast-forward' button for the U.S. voter who wondered whether we could make up our lost status in the world. He could not have done that with a speech in Wichita, Grand Forks, Galveston, or Dayton.

MSNBC's Chuck Todd said, in his post-speech statement (I'm paraphrasing) "There is nothing in this speech John McCain couldn't have said." I disagree.

Obama's reception has everything to do with the messenger as much as the message, however cautiously phrased. Obama's personal history shows he is a Citizen of the World in a way no other previous candidate can claim. He repeated throughout the speech, "This is the moment..." He may as well have been saying "This is my moment."

CBS has some explaining to do and so does Katie Couric.  This is not unbiased reporting... it's a downright coverup!

"John McCain has dedicated his life to serving, improving and protecting America. Barack Obama spent an afternoon talking about it."  Right, like McCain voting againt the Webb bill benefiting our servicemen and women; voting against all pro-women bills (equal pay/equal work; healthcare, etc.); against Martin Luther King holiday.  John McCain votes to improve the rich and to protect his "friends" (like Gramm) who have enriched themselves while destroying our country.
I am very excited Obama did so well representing the United States of America.  It has been a very long time since we (the Americans) have been so well received overseas.

I find it appalling given our status in this world for the last 8 years that we would have other countries around the world take such interest in a man that embodies the greatness of America and some of us (who call ourselves Americans) would talk bad about him.

Americans need to wake up and take advantage of this moment and stop ingesting hatorade.  Obama, as an American first, gave the world a look at what we as a world together can accomplish, not just one party.

As far as these polls are concerned, people are riding this wave of employment in this field of polling people, but make no mistake about it; Obama is our next President, so get use to it, because this is our moment!
I love Obama! He makes me want to pee my pants!
The GOP wouldn't know "diplomacy" if it hit them in the head. We have had 8 years of "my way or the highway" so it's going to take a moment for America to wake up and realize what Obama could mean to the Bush-weakened image of the USA throughout Europe. They absolutely hate Bush in Europe and Obama is like a breath of fresh air, not only for them, but for the USA as well. There is no comparison between him and McCain. McCain cannot even remember where he's been, who he's given speeches to, or what country borders another. How ANYONE can vote for him is beyond me. Haven't we had enough "stupid men" in the White House for the past 8 years? We sure don't need another one.
I’d for one like to thank Barack for what he’s doing overseas. I can’t remember the last time we had so many world leaders and citizens of other nations as anxious as they are now in hearing what one of our premier political figures has to say.

Not to mention when he speaks, he actually knows what he’s talking about and is able to construct constructive and articulate statements. I’ve grown accustomed over the past eight years of people domestically and abroad running from the presence and words of these ‘politicians’. Barack appears to be genuine in his ability to actually want to hear the concerns of these individuals.

It will be amazing or should I say less so, the criticism he will face for being liked by those other than left of center Americans or those disaffected by the last eight years. Who knew being liked around the world would be such a bad thing.
People that hate the US, love Obama! Why?
Clara Kansas City, MO (Sent Thursday, July 24, 2008 4:24 PM)

Excellent post.
McAuf Wiedersehen
Now can we finally have a real world leader who understands the complete stage! Go Obama 08!!
Shame on you McLoser!
Linda, Boston,

how about you go try to rain on someone else's parade.  we're all sunshine here.
I wonder how many people will crowd the Washington Mall to witness his Inuguration Address?
Chuk, NY (Sent Thursday, July 24, 2008 4:24 PM)

Who? For Obama? None. They'll be there to see John sworn in. And they won't need the entire mall. Most people that vote for McCain work for a living. There not unemployed like most of Obama's supporters and probably will not attend.
Tucker Bounds said in an emailed statement. "Barack Obama offered eloquent praise for this country, but the contrast is clear. John McCain has dedicated his life to serving, improving and protecting America. Barack Obama spent an afternoon talking about it."

This statement should never have been made.  It is meaningless to true Americans Tucker.  McSain/McBush is finished! The world is looking through the new future hour glass.
I am so proud of him. Let's hope this gifted man can make a go of it in the general elections. How good it would be to have an intelligent leader concerned about our standing in the world. Go Obama!
Linda in Boston -- you dont have to warm up to him, you just have to vote for the same democratic values that Hillary represents. We are all on the same page for God sake!
"I want the MSM to play fair.  Why didn't Katie, Charlie and Brian go overseas when McCain went back in March?  Can anyone answer that. "

Linda, Boston, MA (Sent Thursday, July 24, 2008 4:26 PM)

--------------------------------------------------

The answer is simple...McCain didn't invite them.
Sen McCain has been overseas 17 TIMES count them 17 Times within the last few months.  He was not concerned about the suffering of hard working Americans.

Sen. Obama made us his number 1 Priority so he only made 1 trip and keep working on the Issue we care most about the ECOMOMY>

Even with Sen. Obama making just 1 trip and one that Sen. McCain and the Republicans BULLIED him about because he hand not been overseas in the last 2 years and DARED him to go, now

the Republicans and McCain are accusing him of going when he should not have gone.  Really after McCain has made 17 TRIPS 17 TRIPS it's just whining, whining

Perhaps if McCain and the Republicans found some substance to talk about rather than daily Bashing Sen. Obama they might begin to understand what working Americans/Taxpayers are going through

Because they the Republicans and Sen. McCain are proving over and over again that clearly are out of touch with the adverse conditions Americans are experiencing or they SIMPLY DON"T CARE>

John McCains response was ridiculous.  He's turned into a joke, plain and simple.
Linda, Boston, MA - what a pathetic post? Don't you what Obama's policies are by now? What planet are you on?
Go support Mccain, Who tells a new lie each day. Tells you that the recent price drop in gas is because of Bush's action on Offshore drilling.

Tells you that surge means not just increase in troops, but all the events that contributed to improvements in Iraq.

I suggest you to go to Factcheck.org and do an objective assessment of all the statements made by each side.
What a glorious moment for the U.S.! As has been said before, leaders like Mr. Obama are so rare; I had forgotten what it feels like to be patriotic. Thanks Mr. Obama for restoring what was lost for the last eight years!

Tucker Bounds and the rest of McAncient's team are going to cost their boss the election; they're so desparate! I would much rather take a risk on the future (Obama) rather than wear one of those "Old Fart McCaint" or "Old Fart's Wife" caps. The world is brand new again with new problems that require new and energetic blood.
