Obama delivers speech before 200,000

Posted: Thursday, July 24, 2008 4:10 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones

BERLIN, Germany -- In the most anticipated public event of his five-country swing through Europe and the Middle East, Obama today addressed a crowd of more than 200,000 people at Tiergarten Park here, calling upon Americans and Europeans to work together to fight terrorism, poverty, genocide, climate change and to work toward a world without nuclear weapons.

He also touched on the need for peace in the Middle East, a strong European Union, and a free and fair trade system.

VIDEO: Speaking before an enormous crowd in Berlin, Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama warned against 'walls' between 'allies,...races and trives, natives and immigrants, Christian and Muslim and Jew.'

The presumptive Democratic nominee -- who was greeted with several chants of “Yes we Can” and was frequently interrupted by cheers and applause -- returned to his common campaign themes of unity, hope, and the need to seize the moment. He also repeated a favorite phrase, “This is our moment,” several times throughout his roughly half-hour speech, which acknowledged about the need to repair the relationship between America and its allies.

“In Europe, the view that America is part of what has gone wrong in our world -- rather than a force to help make it right -- has become all too common,” he told a crowd that stretched about a mile from his stage in front of the Victory Column to the Brandenburg Gate. “In America, there are voices that deride and deny the importance of Europe’s role in our security and our future. Both views miss the truth.”

Obama stressed at the beginning of his speech that he was speaking as a citizen of the world, not as a candidate for president. He touched on Berlin’s Cold War past and of the aid America provided the city and the continent through the Marshall Plan. He said the city’s people “kept the flame of hope burning” and that “this city, of all cities, knows the dream of freedom.”

The campaign said last week it had chosen Berlin, the city where John F. Kennedy gave his famous "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech in 1963, because of its unique place in the history of the 20th century and because of Obama's desire to highlight the need to cooperate as closely with America's European allies in the 21st century as it did in the last.

Obama called the speech "A World that Stands as One," and he told the crowd it was important to remember that while there would be differences between the United States and its allies, no country could stand alone in fighting modern challenges. He drew applause when he said that true partnership and progress required constant work, as well as the will to listen to each other and to trust each other.

"That is why America cannot turn inward. That is why Europe cannot turn inward. America has no better partner than Europe," he said. "Now is the time to build new bridges across the globe as strong as the one that binds us across the Atlantic. Now is the time to join together, through constant cooperation and strong institutions and shared sacrifice and a global commitment to progress, to meet the challenges of the 21st century.”

This was one of the most closely-watched speeches of Obama's campaign, and his advisers seemed particularly concerned about stressing that it would not be "political" -- with the senator telling reporters on the flight from Tel Aviv this morning that it would not be a "wonky" policy address. It came smack dab in the middle of a general election campaign against his Republican opponent, John McCain, with whom at least one recent poll showed voters feel more comfortable with on foreign policy issues.

Some controversy surrounded the event in its planning stages when reports came out that Obama had sought to hold it at the Brandenburg Gate, an 18th-century monument that became a symbol of the Cold War and is now a symbol of a reunified Germany. Ronald Reagan delivered his famous "tear down this wall" speech at the gate in 1987.

Obama made reference to the Berlin Wall, saying the walls that still exist today between old allies on either side of the Atlantic -- between rich and poor countries; between "races and tribes, natives and immigrants, Christian and Muslim and Jew" must be torn down.

And he acknowledged America's imperfections. "I know my country has not perfected itself. At times, we’ve struggled to keep the promise of liberty and equality for all of our people," he said. "We’ve made our share of mistakes, and there are times when our actions around the world have not lived up to our best intentions. But I also know how much I love America.”

"People of Berlin -- people of the world -- this is our moment. This is our time," Obama said in closing.

The McCain campaign responded by calling the speech premature. "While Barack Obama took a premature victory lap today in the heart of Berlin, proclaiming himself a 'citizen of the world,' John McCain continued to make his case to the American citizens who will decide this election," spokesman Tucker Bounds said in an emailed statement. "Barack Obama offered eloquent praise for this country, but the contrast is clear. John McCain has dedicated his life to serving, improving and protecting America. Barack Obama spent an afternoon talking about it."

I want the MSM to play fair.  Why didn't Katie, Charlie and Brian go overseas when McCain went back in March?  Can anyone answer that.

yes, McCain restricted the media access during his trip. Classic, out of touch, bad campaigning move.
[The McCain campaign responded by calling the speech premature.

--The McCain campaign smacks of desperation.  Does not the McCain campaign's counter argument highlight that Sen. McCain could never draw that crowd?  I cannot understand why they fight everything, I simply don't believe America wants all that negativity (we want hope and a future) that is pouring from the McCain campaign.  So, I ask, just who is the real 'Dr. No?'

--And this is where all the Obama-nut F-R bloggers get out an attack John McCain in manners beneath their supposed stature as human beings, adding little more to the conversation than call him a poody-head.  Grow up!  It's easy to view everything through a tinted lens of partisanship, but a whole other thing to push for better from our political leaders--and that means being tough on the people we love, Mr. Obama (who is not perfect and folds easily in the face of criticism).  Sen. Obama talks about unity, hope, seizing the moment and raising the discourse in politics.  As a F-R reader, it is more pleasing to read positive messages that build up a candidate than the negative to tear one down.  I simply cannot understand why the people of this blog refuse to personally take hold of this/his message.  I have got to believe that my generation will be better than that, that we will change things—oh forget it, I’m a realist.

John McCain is not talking unity, hope or other positive values.  Barack Obama is talking in 'soaring rhetoric', so why can't we--yes we can? (and give credit to McCain when he does something positive, and when is due).
Whether Senator Obama wins or not, these are words the world will be better for havng heard.

The passage about walls touched me most particularly.

Stone, cement, or brick walls are not the impediments that hold us back from a higher plane of evolution, freedom, and peace in our time, but the walls around our hearts, and minds.
Chuk, NY:  You mean this WASN'T his inauguration speech?

Damn, could have sworn . . .

Oh well, he can use this one again in January.
All McCain does is talk and "gaffe". His energy plans are a political pander with no substance behind it.  His advisors have called us "whinners" or lazy.  McCain wants to maintain the Bush status quo which means it makes the 1930's Hooover adminstration down right competent in comparison.
200,000!

Bj,CA,

What do you think? How'd we do?
Hi FR:

I was wondering who wrote Obama's speech?  We know he can read so what's the big deal?

I would rather him be here in the US letting Americans know what the heck he plans to do for us!!!

I know his heart was crushed that he didn't have the same backdrop for his photo op as Kennedy and Regan did but enough is enough.

I want the MSM to play fair.  Why didn't Katie, Charlie and Brian go overseas when McCain went back in March?  Can anyone answer that.

I am not voting for the next American Idol but for POTUS.  Right now McCain is the one acting more Presidental seeing that he is here talking about the problems that Americans have...not making a spectical out of himself with 200,000 Germans cheering him like he was a king or something.

I was a Hillary supporter and still am.  I have tried to warm up to Obama but he hasn't given me any and I mean any reason to....

Linda,

Sen. Obama is doing all he can to travel this country and show the American people who he really is. We should be proud that a potential leader of this nation will be accepted by our ALLIES in Europe and elsewhere.

I am sure Hillary is glad that you are supporting McCain. They really stand for the same goals health care, extending the war, or maybe a faulty memory. You are truly doing the Sen from New York a true disservice

America and Europe dominating the world.  Isn't that a step backward?  I thought we were supposed to be meek, unthreatening and deferential to the world.  It's bad for us to be strong and powerful.  It's bad to have so many people of white European heritage running the world.

This speech must have been very threatening to Hugo Chavez.
Linda in Boston.  I agree.  I cannot vote for this empty suit.  In the latest Fox poll Bo leads by 1 point.  If you add HRC and Mitt Romney as VP the lead  goes up to 9 points.  Even if he picked HRC, and I don't think he will because it would detract from "the one", I still couldn't bring myself to vote for him.

McCain isa cting more Presidential!

How, by accusing Obama of treason for wanting to pull our troops out of Iran?

How, by claiming that Obama would have allowed genocide in Iraq if we withdrew our troops.

How, by constantly flip-flopping, revising history or making so many gaffes it is incredible no one has called him on them.

Perhaps, the best reason to vote McCain is you would like to see Roe v. Wade overturned by his appointing conservative Supreme Court judges.  The man's recond on women's rights has earned hom a NARAL rating of zero.

Way to go!

John McCain wanted to invade Iraq in 1998, 5 years befor the actual invasion.  John McCain voted for a war that was based on lies, deception and fear-mongering.  The war in Iraq has not made us any safer than we were pre 9/11. We should have been fighting the people that killed 3000 Americans.  We should have never allowed the Taliban to regroup. We now have to re-fight a war we had won, a task that would have been unecessary if judgement was exercised by Mr. McCain.

If this protecting America, I give up.

Ira,

I just love reading your post! They are always full of wisdom and insite. Thank from another fellow American.

Obama 08
So McCain's message is to effectively declare that anyone who disagrees with his positions is basically 'treasonous', 'naive', 'inexperienced', 'elitist', etc. etc...

The patient position of this very interested observer is that McCain continues to prove himself inadequate to the task of Administering our Nation. His inability to elevate his campaign to something more than name calling and derision calls into question his dedication and ability. McCain now has some very simple tasks;

FULLY DEFINE his goals; i.e. "winning in Iraq", " serving, improving and protecting" our Nation, and  "Bringing down the costs of Energy".

FULLY OUTLINE his SOLUTIONS; (in other words) put his proposals into more than platitudes and nebulous phrases; and provide the American Voter with something we can favorably compare to Obama's published proposals!! ((You know; like that dastardly NYT publication suggested!!))

We are no asking our candidates to tear each other down; we are asking them to learn to work together to improve the lot of the Average American!

WHERE IS THE POSITIVE CAMPAIGN WE WERE PROMISED??!!

OUR PATIENCE IS WEARING VERY THIN!!
In the Katie Couric interview, McLame called Iraq the first major war after 9-11; totally forgetting about Afghanistan:

MSM, First Read, WHERE ARE YOU???
Expose this double talk train wreck for the good of the country.
I'm voting for Obama but I resent being railroaded into voting for him this way.  The US will be the not only hated, but the laughingstock of the world if we dare to elect anyone else at this point.

Can anyone on this blog spell INAPPROPRIATE?
Linda in Boston - Obama has been touringthe country every day (except the past week) for over a year, telling America about his plans for our country.  If you are a Hillary supporter, you alreasy know most of them, because it is approximately the same as her plans.  He emphasizes cutting out the special interest influence, which is the particular change he is wants to push.  He believes corporate lobbyists and special interest groups are responisble for making progress in Congress so difficult to deliver.  He believes we need to be more diplomatic and get the coalition building back on track.  You see, thw world oppinion of America and our next president is very important and that is why this trip is good for America.  Not only will it help educate voters that Obama can be a great and diplomatic leader, but it lets the world know we are serious about changing paths from the deplorable Bush years.

Please warm up to Obama.  He represents you and will serve you well.  I know it is hard to forget the disappointment of not haveing your candidate win, but I know it is possible.  There was a time when despite my support for Obama, I found the idea of Hillary as VP unacceptable.  But I have since gotten over it and can seperate how I felt about her campaign tactics from the loyal Democrat that I know she is.
Wow!! The contrast is striking, Obama's in Germany speaking to the world and McCain's in a German restaurant eating sausage...in Ohio!!  Come on MSM, do your job and report the REAL news, this election isn't even close.  Obama by a LANDSLIDE!!
Linda in Boston,

How stupid are you?  SENILE OLD MCFLIPFLOP addressing issues important to Americans?  Are you serious.  SENILE OLD MCFLIPFLOP is so old his brain is half mush.  All he ever does is talk about why he doesn't like Obama.  He has NO solutions for America except more war, bigger budget deficits, and a moronic energy policy that will do nothing he claims.  Now I see why you supported Clinton.  Too stupid to know any better.
It's the most memorable moment of the campaign so far. Obama nailed it, with a little help from his 200k friends.

Silly for the media to portray Obama as "out of touch" for being in Europe while McCain is in the dairy aisle. Obama doesn't have an economic problem. Besides, how about McCain's trip to Canada and Colombia, etc.?

Now is the time for all of us to to make Nov. 4th a landside for Sen. Obama! He made America proud today. Think about the leverage this could give our political leaders as they negociate with other world leaders. These other world leaders are politicians who want to answer the needs of their citizens- their citizens are on the Obama-Train!!!!
