Battleground: Tightening in key states?

The LA Times uses the new Quinnipiac polls showing McCain closing in on Obama in some key states, and writes a glass-is-half-empty story -- which includes some Clinton criticism. "Obama also faces discontent from some of Hillary Rodham Clinton's most ardent supporters, who are put off by what they describe as a campaign marked by hubris and a style dedicated to televised extravaganzas. Susie Tompkins Buell, a major Clinton fundraiser, said: "The Clinton supporters that I know are bothered by these rock-star events. These spectacles are more about the candidate than they are about the party and the issues that we care about."

Regarding those Quinnipiac polls, don’t miss this: "Clay Richards, the assistant director of the Connecticut university's polling institute, said the Obama slide [in Minnesota] probably isn't as dramatic as the raw numbers reflect. Still, Richards said McCain is clearly stronger in the state than he was in June."

A Pew poll of Hispanics finds that Obama leads 66%-23%.

VIDEO: The latest NBC/WSJ poll shows that Barack Obama has not yet received any boost in ratings since his trip overseas. A Race for the White House panel discusses.

In his most recent National Journal column, Charlie Cook writes, “Obama is more than midway through his tour of the Middle East and Europe, a trip designed to generate images of the freshman Democratic senator standing next to foreign leaders, projecting a presidential image. That’s important. Swing voters need to be able to visualize him as president and to see him dealing as an equal with the world leaders whose ranks he seeks to join. So far, Obama has made no major missteps during this important journey.”

“McCain has spent the past week trying to stay visible and seem relevant—talking about the economy and lobbing verbal grenades at Obama any time that his junior colleague appeared to make, or almost make, a gaffe or expose a weakness. Trailing narrowly but steadily in national polls, McCain needs to wait for Obama to make a mistake—or needs to try to force one—then exploit it. This election is about whether Obama can make the sale, taking advantage of the voters’ demand for change and their preference for Democrats these days. If Obama cannot close the deal, McCain will win by default, the beneficiary of voter reluctance to embrace Obama.”

More compiled by NBC/NJ’s Carrie Dann…
COLORADO: Howard Fineman looks at how the heavily attended Denver convention could be a key tool in mobilizing grassroots support in the state before November. "The campaign is using the scramble for tickets as a way to harvest names, e-mail addresses and phone numbers for Coloradoans who might not otherwise get involved. "They could ID an extra twenty or thirty thousand people," [a Democratic] official said. "If they are willing to come out and see him, they might be willing to make calls for him."

FLORIDA: Obama's campaign opened its first South Florida office yesterday, its third overall in the state.

MICHIGAN: The Detroit Free Press looks at Obama's loss among indies in the Quinnipiac poll. "The survey now shows McCain leading Obama among independents in the state 44%-41%, compared to a month ago when Obama led McCain 46%-38% among that same group in the state. Independents may make up as much as a third of the electorate in Michigan."

OHIO: Ohio's Secretary of State predicts a whopping 80% voter turnout in November. That would break the state's previous record of 77% turnout in 1992.

PENNSYLVANIA: Obama leads McCain in PA field offices 24-2.

It's an IQ test folks and, apparantly, some Americans are failing.
This is during the Bush Admin!!!!!!!! There are nuclear weapons being flown across the nation by these people. The reason our soldiers are falling asleep (with launch codes) is because our troops are spread too thin. They are having to work triple shifts because there are not enough staff to fill in.

The war was unnecessary and now we are in threat from this Administration's incompetence by soldiers falling asleep with tactical information and nuclear launch codes, Nuclear missiles being flown across the country (Lord knows what would happen if one of them were "accidentally" dropped).

And then there is McCain, Bush's BFF, trying to take over the reigns. There is no national security!!!!!! The main thing we have to fear is McCain since he believes in Bush policy. He has stood behind Bush from the beginning and will continue his Gestapo style policing of the American people. I can't believe there are people willing to vote for this type of governance.
And another thing, McCain would embrace the crowds if he could get them. But he can't so Hillary, GOP supporters get over it.
The MSM wants nothing more right now than for this to be a tight race.
I will be very suprised if McCain can keep up this pace, I dont even understand why hes moving up in the polls.? I think it must be because people dont like Obama.  Because McCain hasnt done anything this week that would make him move up in the polls, McCain needs to take another Nap, Just LIke He did on the Conan Obrien show., did you see it., I couldnt believe it.  This guy is getting old.  I dont think he has the energy it takes to be President. If you want to see the video of him falling asleep on the Conan Obrien show they have it at this site. http://www.mccanes.com
The Clinton supporters that haven't yet begun to support Obama are upset because the "big-money" donors don't get special treatment from the Obama campaign, the way they did from the Clintons.  They surely wouldn't be "bothered by these rock-star events" if they were sharing the stage with the candidate, now would they?
Clearly these polls show the resistance of some to part of Mr. Obama's mixed heritage. But if the use their brains, they will realize that at this time, McCain would be a disaster.  He's shown that he only has command of one word... SURGE.

He is a vicious little TROLL that lies at the drop of a hat and is full of blatant hypocrisy.  He D-Double Dares Mr. Obama to go to Iraq (which he was planning to do anyway), then turns around and slanders him when ever anyone is willing to actually listen.  When people see the choices before us (and get beyond their own prejudices) , there will be no question that Mr. Obama will be our next Prez.
I dont know where you are getting the information that Obama's campaign just opened its first So. Fla office.  I have been volunteering for his campaign for over two weeks out of a  North Palm Beach Co.office, including canvassing last weekend that saw a great turnout of volunteers reach over 1100 households in 90 + degree heat.  The response from most people was very positive.
Although we know that polls mean very little at this time the fact is that Obama still leads McCain nationally and in electoral college vote line-ups. McCain is supposed to be the well known experienced candidate and accroding to the media (Andrea Mitchell and others) no one really knows Obama. Yet Obama leads McCain. Seems to me due to the country's knowledge of McCain and supposed lack thereof of Obama that Mccain should be leading Obama by 10 - 15%. Instead Mccain is behind. If Obama is unknown yet still leading McCain I think that tells you where this election is headed.

Note - It has been made clear by one poll in particular that these latest polls are unreliable and quite inaccurate. There is no way that Obama goes from a 17% point lead in MN a few weeks ago to a virtual tie in the recent poll. No way. Take another poll in MN tomorrow, contact a new set of 1,500 registered voters and most likely Obama's lead in MN would return to double digits.
I don't think Hilliary's supporters are as bothered by the events as being jealous of them. Someone had to win, the other person had to loose. Get over it. If Hilliary were out there giving speeches like that, they would be proud of her, as I am proud of senator Obama.
While the Obama Trauma is trying to win over the world John McCain is only a few points behind in the race for the White House. Common sense is starting to prevail. It is evident that Obama's overseas tour is doing him more harm than good.
Ohio's had numerous problems in their voting process in the past.  If they do have an 80% turnout I hope it's done without a hitch.  Florida, I'll only believe they can do anything right when the election's over and there's no screaming.  Concerning the polls accuracy right now...I think they are way off.  Once the debates begin and polling becomes more widespread I'm sure we'll see Obama's evident lead over the Mavwack.
More news to try and convince the people that the GOP is the "right" way. Thought it is sickening but no this time. McSurge will not convince the people that "the surge is or has been working. Forget about it GOP.
Some Clinton backer's expect Barack to rollover to thier demand's. Here's some news for ya, second place finisher's don't & nevr will Dictate to the Winner. Stop your Whineing or join Mccain. You can call yourselves"Whiner's United against Barack".

When Hillary(or Bill for that matter) get off thier A$$ & out on the Campaign trail(as they said they would)& start attacking some of these attack's coming from the GOP, maybe then barack may give you a voice. Until then, shut the heck up!
"It is evident that Obama's overseas tour is doing him more harm than good."
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Yeah, having the Iraqi government say that Obama is correct in his assessment of the situation there, that's doing him lots of harm. Seeing him command the respect and admiration of other world leaders - that's doing him lots of harm. Seeing him inspire Germans to cheer for OUR country and wave OUR flag - who wants a president who can do that? Meanwhile, McGaffe-A-Day fumbles and bumbles and sinks to new ethical lows.

The effect of Obama's trip overseas will not be shown in the polls until he gets back - the polls are always a few days behind in their reflection of current events.
Full Moon, you must be in eclipse mode. Obama's trip overseas has done more for America in the eyes of the world than all of McLame and Bush's trips put together.
The American people are smart enough to realize that now.
It is our time.
I fully now believe that the Clinton supports that cling on to the old party system, that has failed them for the past 8+ years. I watched the Democratic Party go down in flames year after year. What it needs is a new direction and fire to rally new voters to rejuvinate the Party. Obama is that person. Clinton supporters are just enviouse that she and her husband could never gather that much support and hate to see their influence in the Party wane. I ask Clinton and her supporters to stop clinging to power that will drag down the Democratic Party. Your time had come and now it is gone. Let others shine for a while.
Full Moon - Yes, common sense is starting to prevail, the fact that John McCain has none.
Those that think that Obama has a "rock star image" don't seem to understand that there is a great amount of interest generated by him.  He isn't inviting people to come out, but they are finding out where he is and showing up.  This will be good if he can get people into the voting booth on November 4th to vote for him.  Otherwise, this isn't going to last long after that.
C A, Tuscaloosa, AL - I totally agree! Why do people continue to keep harping on why Obama in not ahead by more but in the same breath they stress that he's only been on the national scene for a few years while McCain has been around since the dinosaurs roamed. Isn't it quite the fete that Obama is ahead at all? He took down the Clinton machine and he's going to take down McCain also.He took down the Clinton machine and he's going to take down McCain also.
If the fact that the rest of the world overwhelmingly supports Obama and his vision makes you think less of him, then you are cleary ignorant...or a blind republican (same).
McCain is only a few points behind because folks don't want to vote for the black man!!! I mean really lets get real here!!! The GOP has messed this Country up royally and everyone knows it, yet they are willing to put another GOP back in office to continue it!!! I mean please lets call a spade a spade and no I'm not playing the race card, I'm just playing the cards that are being dealt right now. Every media politcal conservative pundit knows that the GOP shouldn't have a chance in hell for the White House this year but, here we are looking at only a few points between greatness and someone who had their chance in 2K!!! PLEASE!!! America is a joke and it's about those who have and those who don't!!!
I'm getting really sick of the media pundants.  When Quinnipiac showed Obama jumping up 7 points in the national polls everyone said "Oh that's an outlier" but when Quinnipiac shows a drop all of the lame asses jump all over it screaming that the sky is falling.

Minnesota:
Rasmussen (June 11) - 52% / 39%  (Obama +13)
Quinnipiac U. (June 24) - 54% / 37% (Obama +17)
Rasmussen (July 10) - 52% / 34% (Obama +18)
Quinnipiac U. (July 22) - 46% / 44% (Obama +2)
Rasmussen (July 22) - 49% / 37% (Obama +12)

You people are so desperate to make the race close you just become a disgrace in your job performance.  Jumping all over one poll and never mentioning the other poll out the same day showing a completely different result, one far closer to the others out there.

The Quinnipiac polls were flawed, they were all heavily shifting Republican compared to every other poll out there, even for the Congress races.  There is no way that McCain is getting 45% of the 18-29 vote like it shows.  That would have been like saying a poll was legit that showed Clinton getting only 30% of the female vote.
Obama's overseas trip has done him a world of good. While on the trip McCain is at home looking like a child let behind attacking Obama and looking quite desparate. Obama did not hurt himself on the trip and can now say I took Mccain's advice and made a trip overseas. Now that that is over Obama will  return home and continue campaigning across the States with additional ideas and comments on the economy while Mccain continues his I don't have a "clue" apppraoch to the economy. If Mccain is supoosed to be the well known item with all this experience he should be leading Obama by 10% - 15% points. Instead he is behind even though folks like Andrea Mitchell say people do not yet know Obama. To be an unknown and yet ahead in the polls (even if by a slight lead) is quite an accomplishment. Now the lead will begin to grow, especially after the conventions and after both pick their VP running mates. Naturally, McCains continued gaffs and lack of memory as well as his loss of temper i nthe deabtes will eventually put this away for Obama as well.
Sorry guys....Obama is definitely way out of his league politically.  He does look and sound good though. If you think this country will be better after he becomes president, you are very mistaken.  I don't love McCain, but I do know who will make a better president at this time for our country.  I can't vote for someone because they are"inspiring".  A president has to be able to make good decisions, and so far Obama has changed his position on every single issue.....he has a mission....to become president .  You have to admit his ego is HUGE!
Full Moon - you were a Hill supporter - are you really that sore at Obama that you are now supporting McCain?  C'mon!
The best McCain can do is stay several points behind (an average of 4-6 % )It is not if there is going to be a blowout but when it will happen.

So everyone keep pretending the race is "close"
Sounds like Mark Murray/MSNBC favors Obama. "The LA Times uses the new Quinnipiac polls showing McCain closing in on Obama in some key states, and writes a glass-is-half-empty story..." So McCain closing in on Obama is >bad< news according to Mark/MSNBC ? I thought good journalism was supposed to be non-partisan.
When you look at only the trees, Obama is winning nationwide. When you watch only the "rock concerts" it appears that Obama is winning or that Europe loves Obama.
But when you step back and examine the picture as a whole, the bad economy, the unreasonably high cost of gas caused by the policies of a Democrat controlled Congress, McCain wins. He's the one associating with everyday voters, talking about the economic issues voters are affected by. Meantime, Obama is in Europe posing for photo ops.
McCain is proposing real solutions to global warming while Obama just keeps saying no to proposals to take us off our reliance on hostile nations for energy. No to reducing carbon emissions.
Don't be fooled by the rock concerts. The Europeans might applaud a good speech now and then, but the Europeans are already saying they don't trust Obama.

All in all, looks like Bush winning in November.
I don't believe that the MN polls are that tight.  Anybody who knows MN knows we are all at a lake this time of year.  I'm thinking the polls are skewed.
Johnson of Sliver Spring could not have agreed with you more, but I fell america is not the joke the polls are.
One should always read the fine print in any poll. The new Minnesota Poll showed that voters between the ages of 18-34 went to Obama 50% to 45%. In this same poll one month ago the same age group went to Obama 63% to 33%. In every other state or national poll Obama consistantly wins that age goup by 25 to 35 percent. There is a flaw in this latest Minnesota poll.
Romney on the ticket equals wins in Colorado, Nevada and Michigan. Wake up and do some Electoral College Math people! McCain/Romney is the Republicans only hope
Most of us, average American citizens, are still proud of our country.  We still hold tight to God and country.  We do not identify with the negativity that Obama says is pervasive in America and we are annoyed by the Messiah-like portrayal in the media along with the blind following of an entire racial bloc, the adulation of the young and the rantings of the uninformed.  We are still a right-leaning country and Obama is obviously too far left for our comfort zone.  Add to that his slim resume, lack of experience, narcissism, etc. and you will have a better idea why Obama will be losing this election.
