Veepstakes: Coming soon?

The Washington Post: “Anxious to counter the blanket media coverage that has followed Sen. Barack Obama on his overseas journey, Sen. John McCain is weighing whether to announce his running mate in the coming weeks before the spotlight shifts to China and the opening of the Olympic Games next month. "He's in a position to make [the decision] on short notice if he wanted to," said Charles R. Black Jr., one of McCain's top political advisers.”

VIDEO: NBC Political Director Chuck Todd takes a look at today's political headlines including the focus on who John McCain and Barack Obama will pick as their running mates.

More: "Many Republicans say the traditional time frame for an announcement -- the days leading up to the GOP convention -- is not practical this year, because the Democratic convention ends so soon before the Republican gathering. It's unlikely, they said, that McCain would announce his pick the day after Obama gives his convention speech. And several McCain aides said they oppose the idea of making a vice presidential announcement during the Olympics. ‘It's not that it wouldn't get covered. But if you are looking for a calm sea and no waves . . . you don't do it during the Olympics,’ said one senior Republican adviser.”

"We don't know when some breakthrough performance will happen," the adviser said. "All sorts of news can come. . . . What if there's some sort of human rights protest?"

The Wall Street Journal looks at Bobby Jindal's conversion to Catholicism.

More compiled by NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli…
Ken Khachigian thinks the veepstakes needs to be “put in perspective.” “In a presidential campaign, there are only a handful of occasions when a running mate has news value: the day of the announcement and the few days following; the nominee's convention speech debut; the joint kickoff rally; and the televised debate with the counterpart running mate.”

The LA Times has a long pros/cons list.

REPUBLICANS: Asked by Kelly O’Donnell yesterday if he knew where he wanted to go with the pick, he said: “Sure, sure.”

Is this another weekend at Sedona for some veep wannabes?

If Minnesota really is tightening, RealClear Politics notes, Tim Pawlenty's stock could be rising. "Polls have shown that Pawlenty doesn't have the kind of pull to close a 10-point gap. A two-point gap, however, is a different story." Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R-MN) was apparently in Michigan again Thursday, where he of course “sidestepped” VP questions. “I like my day job," Pawlenty said.

Rob Portman played a good surrogate with McCain yesterday. "Sen. McCain is talking about kitchen-table issues here, while Sen. Obama is having a political rally in Berlin," he said.

DEMOCRATS: Ken Bode thinks it’s gonna be Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN). “In selecting Bayh, Obama will reach into the more conservative caucus of Democratic senators, adding the unifying effect of picking someone who supported his main opponent, Hillary Clinton. The pundits will undoubtedly say that Bayh is a white-bread choice, lacking in charisma. But charisma is hardly a problem for the Obama ticket, and during the Indiana primary Bayh demonstrated surprising political clout.”

Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) said despite his harsh words for McCain, “I fully expect to be in the private sector next year. I don't expect to be in anybody's administration.”

Okay, but what does slimeball Bob Novak say, or is he still scraping the pedestrian off of his Corvette (yeah, the pedestrian he didn't see)--give us some dish on this one, please.
The Dems are going to be sorry they didin't pick Hillary. By the way, whatever happened to her 10 to 20 million dollar debt?
It's Edwards for Obama and Romney for McCain.  Now, give me the remote control for the Olympics, please.
McGoofy surely you must be sweating alittle more these days....Are you really going to pick a VP that makes you look older than dirt...?
Hellboy/Family Guy Ticket or the
Hellboy/Beaver Cleaver .. they both make you look older but no wiser....desperation kicks in just the knockout punch is delivered....
And we won't call you surely...
GO JOE!!!
GO JOE!!!
GO JOE!!!
GO JOE!!!
GO JOE!!!
GO JOE!!!
WE WANT JOE!!!
WE WANT JOE!!!

LISTEN TO THAT CROWD!!!!
Obama/Biden '08
We're happy voters and we approve this message..
Charles Black Jr.?  Charlie Black..yes, the scum bag hasn't been cut from the team and won't be.  The mavwack would bring as crooked a bunch to DC as Bush brought chicken hawks.
I sure hope Obama doesn't select Bayh.  The only reason I can't see Biden being the choice is that Biden might desire the Sec. State job or just desires to stay where he is.  Richardson, Sebelius or Bredesen are all more to my liking than Bayh.
Its been a long time coming Kerry Picked Edwards on  July 6.  Im ready to get behind a cadidate it would be nice to know who their voice of reason is going to be. Hopefully McCain wont pick Romney, Ive seen the videos of all of Romney attack ads.  I think someone posted the link here yesterday to a site that has them all.  Ill repost incase no one seen the attack videos http://www.hotpres.com  I was really partial to Clark for Obama, doesnt look like thats going to happen now though, I dont know why?  Clark was dead on with his statements.  They got twisted up.  Here is a site you can find bio info on all the veep candidates including old pictures of them. http://www.theveep.com  As far as McCain goes. I think Id like to see Huckabee.
What's the difference between a Lama and a Haggee..
Haggee can bring in money where the Lama wants to attack China...Just what McBomber wants to do...
Does anyone else hate the blue 'continued' button at the bottom of the articles?

Please Senator McCain, don't rush your pick! If by chance you are elected, we need you to be very careful choosing who might have to step into your post.
What may very well define this election is who McCain & Obama choose for a running mate.

And remember, the Republican think tank hasn't revealed that September blockbuster to possibly derail Obama's hopes and wife Michelle's dreams.

I still think their only ticket to the White House is on a Trinity Church Tour.
How many news cycles has this non-story been given?

Okay, we all know McCain is anxious for some attention, and may well announce a running mate earlier than previously planned to get some.

Sheesh. The continuing downward slide of journalism.
I have noticed a few things about Obama. Hilary (after she lost) said to him he needs to help with her debt, HE AGREED. Then in a press conference, he was asked if she was a candidate for his VP spot and she grabbed him by the arm and whispered to him, and then HE DIDN'T ANSWER THE QUESTION. MCCain says he needs to go oversea's and HE GOES. McCain says, that you need to look at conditions on the ground before you can make a decision on the Iraq poul-out, and Obama "refines" his position to INCLUDE conditions on the ground. I like Obama, but he is really starting to look lik eh eis being led around by the nose.
somebody look i am going to name a vp, hey somebody look i am going to do something, hey somebody, hey anybody, o good grief.
Green is not McCain's color.
The Morning Joe show is so slanted that it is SICKENING TO WATCH.  I have to go else where.  Has anone else had it with that guy and his yes men/woman???

I doubt it, Iowan.  Edwards political aspirations might be iced if this affair is legit and, according to Morning Schmoe, the MSM is starting to pick up the story.

Yep - it reminds me of a newspaper's front page where you read a blurb about something interesting and at the bottom it says "continued on page A7".

As Jim Gaffigan said on his Comedy Central special - not for me!
Excuse me, BJ, but the Dali Lama does NOT want to attack China, and to put him in the same category as Haggee is a clear indication that you have no idea who the Dali Lama is, or what he stands for (peace, on all levels). One can only hope McCain will actually learn something from his visit with the Dali Lama, and not just try to make it a photo op, but that's probably too much to ask.
With the buzz about Tim Pawlenty, the headlines will just write themselves:  PeePaw and TeePaw '08.  What a ticket!
There are a number of good choices there.  I just thing that I would like to see either Richardson or Biden (possible a few others like Sebelius or Bayh).

To those that want a quick pick so that this doesn't come up during the Olympics shouldn't have to worry since it is going to happen before or after and never during the Olympics much to my dismay.
It is perplexing and a little telling to me that Mr Jindal, who started out a Hindu and converted to Catholocism later in college, would neglect to vote on a bill that would allow people of his original faith to have an important holiday made official. It sounds either very judgemental or very political. To me, either would be wrong-minded in the principles of his converted faith. Yes, you should shake the dust from your sandals when leaving behind someone you can't convert, but you're not supposed to shake the dust onto those who wouldn't convert. Why is it that some people of faith automatically start treating anyone with a different faith position poorly? It seems remarkedly repugnant to me if you are doing it for political reasons. We are supposed to be a melting pot, but it's obvious that many in this country believe to their very most inner self that Christianity is what our country was founded on. How many knew before this year that some of our Founding Fathers were Deists and studied the Koran and other texts? It has become political suicide to be of any other faith than Christian when running for president. Why, just the idea that Barak Obama might have been corrupted when he was FIVE, my God. Oh excuse me, YOUR God. One of the principles that is common in most religions is that of compassion and empathy for others. How many in any particular faith believe that there is something inherently evil when considering what someone from a different faith believes? Get over yourselves, praise God in your own way and let others do the same.
Yes, I also think Morning Joe is unwatchable.  When the program first started, it was not too bad.  They got around to everyone's views, but lately you only get Repubs. outlooks.  Once a Repub, alway a Repub no matter how stupid the candidate is.

I haven't heard about an affair..What affair? Is Elizabeth okay?
MI chick--

I'd missed any Edwards affair issue and, if so, would agree---though your state is where I think he'd help his candidate.
It was sad to see Harold Ford cower to Joe Scarborough  on "Morning Joe" after news broke of McCain's surge timeline gaffe. Joe dared Harold (and anyone else in earshod) to oppose his explaination of the gaffe.
Romney on the ticket equals wins in Colorado, Nevada and Michigan. Wake up and do some Electoral College Math people! McCain/Romney is the Republicans only hope
McCain must choose between an exorcist (Jindal), a Mormon (Romney) and a guy with a mullett (Pawlenty).  Boy that earthshaking decision will really set this race on fire.
Unnamed sources say McCain will announce his Vie Presidential running mate TODAY...

McCain/Dalai Lama '08

...to be announced at a grocer's freezer near you.

You heard it here first...
Yeah I agree!!!  Morning Joe sucks!

I love the co-hosts and commentators but cannot stand the Bully Joe!  He is the old school politics we are trying to change.  A snide spoiled preppie brat of the 80's.  A bigoted fat-cat pitbull.  As long as he has his boats and can send his kids to private school, what the hell does he care about the country and the rest of us?  His comments are non-stop character assassinations delivered by the playground bully.  He won't let anyone else talk, insists his "opinion" is the only viewpoint, constantly talks over other people's points.  I want to listen to the show, not JOE!

It's too bad.  I changed to another cable news show months ago cos I couldn't take anymore Joe.  Please send Joe to Fox where he can join the other hateful fear-mongering bullies that love to destroy our country.  And let us enjoy a wonderful MSNBC morning news show.
The Morning Joe show is so slanted that it is SICKENING TO WATCH.  I have to go else where.  Has anone else had it with that guy and his yes men/woman???

You are not alone my friend!  You are not alone!
To April - Denver, CO

Lama needs to face his people, not run from them and plan evil from afar...The Lama is a fake and sucker monger..like Haggee and McCain and obviously you too...
I believe Obama should either pick Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, or Evan Bayh.  Three of those would be unstoppable.
I campaigned for Edwards and Clinton.
