First thoughts: The turning point?

*** The turning point? So was this week a turning point in the presidential race? The Obama campaign certainly believes it was, and that this will be the moment that Obama grabs the lead for good. If McCain never catches up at this point, his campaign's actions this week (its blistering criticism of Obama and the media, the visuals it picked, its body language, its VP games) will get second-guessed for months. We know this was a significant week; the question is was it enough to erase the doubts voters have with Obama about his ability to be commander-in-chief? But just asking: Did this week tell us more about Obama or McCain? Watching McCain chasing the news cycle and his inability to not let Obama get under his skin -- and the campaign's -- suggests that they could be reactive from this day forward. Why, for instance, did the campaign insist on the equal treatment (see network interviews) this week and not simply attempt to create its own week of coverage from the nets? They were second fiddle all week, and seemed to almost demand being highlighted in that way.

VIDEO: A Race for the White House panel debates: Where is Barack Obama weak politically and how effectively has the McCain campaign been capitalizing on those weaknesses?

*** This race is McCain’s to win, too: Can the McCain camp win by simply hoping for an Obama slip-up or by reacting faster and faster? Yesterday in First Read, we noted that NBC/WSJ pollster Peter Hart said this election was Obama’s to win. But isn’t that also true for McCain? McCain can't simply hope Obama loses this election or fails to adjust his campaign sail enough to capture the strong Democratic wind. Yesterday, actually, McCain finally seemed comfortable being the broccoli candidate -- embracing his role as the serious guy juxtaposed to the rock star opponent. Will the campaign around him have the patience to accept McCain's "keep on keeping on" promise he made to NBC's Kelly O'Donnell?

*** VP's coming? One of these days the McCain campaign won't be "crying VP" and will actually announce his pick. Today's Washington Post has a defensive “the pick could be coming any day now” story. “Anxious to counter the blanket media coverage that has followed Sen. Barack Obama on his overseas journey, Sen. John McCain is weighing whether to announce his running mate in the coming weeks before the spotlight shifts to China and the opening of the Olympic Games next month. ‘He's in a position to make [the decision] on short notice if he wanted to,’ said McCain's chief strategist Charlie Black. Bottom line: The media is being put on notice that the pick could come at any time, with the campaign hinting big time that McCain's going to make the pick before the Olympics. As for Obama's timing, considering how the campaign likes to let big events sink in, it seems highly unlikely they'll step on their own post-trip bounce (if they believe they'll be getting one) by announcing the VP next week. That leaves just one week before the Olympics if next week is indeed out.

*** About that Landstuhl visit: Perhaps the sole bump the Obama campaign hit this week was the minor controversy that erupted when Obama’s campaign decided to skip a visit to Landstuhl to meet with injured US soldiers. The Obama camp put out two statements, the first from retired Gen. Scott Gration: “Sen. Obama had hoped to and had every intention of visiting our troops to express his appreciation and gratitude for their service to our country. We learned from the Pentagon last night that the visit would be viewed instead as a campaign event. Sen. Obama did not want to have a trip to see our wounded warriors perceived as a campaign event when his visit was to show his appreciation for our troops and decided instead not to go.” The other was from strategist Robert Gibbs: “The senator decided out of respect for these servicemen and women that it would be inappropriate to make a stop to visit troops at a U.S. military facility as part of a trip funded by the campaign."

*** The rules: NBC’s Pentagon correspondent Jim Miklaszewski breaks down the rules for these kind of visits: “Political candidates, including the president, are not permitted to use military facilities as a campaign backdrop or anything that could be perceived as being part of a political campaign. Now, of course, we know those lines can be blurred in the president for example has some official purpose for appearing at a military installation. As a member of the Armed Service Committee John McCain could also have a legitimate reason for visiting a military base and attracting media coverage, but it hasn't happened and I think both sides would take a serious look at the implications. The other issue is concern over exploitation of the wounded, for any reason. When the president, the Defense secretary, or any member of Congress visit the wounded at a military hospital the media are not invited to cover the event.” Bottom line from us: The Obama campaign was being overly cautious, worried about the exploitation factor. (The real cynic might believe Obama realized he couldn't bring cameras so THAT's why he canceled). The McCain campaign decided to hit him -- and probably would have done it either way. It was a tiny press victory for McCain in a sea of disasters for the week.

*** Meet Tim Kaine: Tim Kaine is yet another Harvard law grad in those up for consideration for VP this cycle… While he eventually got his degree from Harvard law, Kaine -- a devout Catholic -- left midway through to embark on a nine-month Jesuit mission in Honduras, where he taught welding and carpentry to teenagers… He speaks fluent Spanish… Plays harmonica, sings in the church choir, and apparently likes Charlie Parker-era jazz… Kaine's father-in-law was Virginia's first Republican governor in the 20th century… He and Obama are close; Obama campaigned for Kaine during his governor's race… Like Obama, Kaine was a civil-rights attorney before going into politics… While Kaine is from the key battleground of Virginia, he isn’t as popular in the GOP-leaning southwest part of the state as Mark Warner is.

VIDEO: President Bush and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki have agreed to pursue a "general time horizon" for withdrawal from Iraq, even as Maliki announces support for Barack Obama's proposal. NBC's Patty Culhane reports.

*** Bush’s shifts: Because of the presidential contest -- which is sucking the air out of most other news -- we haven’t paid much attention as we should to all the significant policy shifts coming from Bush Administration. They’re stunning, in fact. The “time horizon” for troop withdrawal from Iraq. Sending envoys to both Iran and North Korea. Just asking: Would the Republican Party and McCain be in a better position heading into this election had Bush announced these changes two years ago, when he still captured the public’s attention?

*** On the trail: McCain is in Colorado, speaking to the GI Forum Convention in Denver and then heading to Aspen to meet with the Dalai Lama. (The Lama is already a big hitter, no telling what the thin air of Colorado will do for the Lama's driving abilities.) Obama, meanwhile, flies from Berlin to Paris -- where he chats with President Nicolas Sarkozy -- before heading to London.

Journalists in this country write this morning that Senator Obama’s speech didn’t have enough substance? Journalists said this? Actual professional journalists?

Countdown with Keith Olbermann. Did you see his program last night? Does everyone realize the value in his WPIW & BUSHED segments?

From his commentaries, his great education at Cornell, and just because of what he believes in as an American, it is very apparent that Keith knows what it takes to fight to maintain our democracy.  It takes anger and outrage. And all Americans should be.  I've been watching Keith for a few years now. Although he may not think so, many of us believe he has made a great deal of headway. And he is showing us how to do it. For some unexplained reason, our journalists decided somewhere along the way to either cede power to Keith or they're afraid - or perhaps just not very smart after all.

Both Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow appear to be very supportive of Senator Obama. I wonder if it’s not so much Barack Obama the man or even the candidate that they like. I wonder if it’s more about Senator Obama's articulated positions on the issues, his organizational skills, his ability to draw people together, his competence and skill in running a campaign against the Washington insiders, but mainly Obama's idealism, which is congruent with their own. It appears Keith and Rachel see eye to eye on what this country was supposed to be. They probably like the way Obama thinks about a problem and then articulates a position on it, just like they do. In their mind and in ours Obama is a breath of fresh air, in a cesspool of end-resulters.

I'm sure the right wing and Fox Propaganda and all the radio stations thought they would be able to treat Keith like Phil Donahue.  But it is a different country right now-thanks to Keith, Air America, Rachael Maddow and the gross incompetence of the ruling regime.  There are not too many lies--disinformation in the soviet mode used by our government--that America will believe.  It is only a matter of time before someone besides Keith or Rachel will say in public and on the airways that the surge did not work at all when measured by the standard of improving the life for the average Iraqi, according to the CSPAN hearings a few nights ago on the Iraqi Progress Report from the gov't.  Despite the surge's supposed success, only 54% of Iraqis' energy needs are being met.  Bagdad, the best place for power only has it 10 hours a day.  Other places much less.  How can we say that the surge worked when we can't even keep the civilian population safe from the heat?  Maybe violence is down because no one can stand the heat.  Or the insurgents simply figure that a gov't that can't cool its people in this day and age is not long for the world. There is a shortage of gasoline, etc.,etc., etc.  But the greatest fact that I heard was just how terrible a military loss we have taken.

Senator Obama is aware of all these facts.

Who will be courageous enough to point to these facts, if not Keith? Bill O'Reilly? Sean Hannity? Rush Limbaugh? Anyone on CNN? Anyone in the so-called mainstream media? No. Yet look at the ratings they receive. Their goal evidently is to keep people uninformed, just like themselves. Doesn’t John McCain have an obligation to point out these realities?

In this day and age of narrow-minded, partisan television and radio, especially AM Radio, Keith needs to reach as many people as possible, not with BS neutrality, but with a point of view.  He is taking on Fox on the TV side, but also has to battle Russ Limbaugh, Michael Savage,  the religious stations, and all the other right-wing stations that broadcast disinformation to the average American every minute of every day.

He I believe is making a difference. Rachel Maddow is making a difference. And that is because decent Americans all across this nation know that for the past 8 years, this is not the United States of America they have loved for as long as they can remember.

Again, to maintain our democracy, it takes anger and outrage when there are those in this country who are trying to take it away. That's what we have been taught by Mr. Olbermann. We have had just about enough of all the excuses and all the looking the other way journalism that we can take.

How nice it would be if only this election were about the economy.

Countdown w/Keith Olbermann
M-F - 8:00 & 10:00 pm EST.
Landstuhl visit:  Ok people can shut up about it now.  The Pentagon is the one that said they would view his trip as a campaign type deal so in an effort to follow the rules, he canceled.  Wise man that Obama.  I wonder if they had said the same thing to McCain if he had gone anyway?  From all his posturing it sounds like it.
Oh well.
Is true the Pentagon is co-opting with McCain to deny Obama access to the troop? If this news is true, then, Pentagon has a lot of explanation to do.
"The Obama campaign certainly believes it was, and that this will be the moment that Obama grabs the lead for good."
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Obama has been ahead every single day for the last 4 months. I think he's already grabbed the lead for good.

As to your question about 'who did we learn more about?' It's hard to say. We learned that Sen Obama has no problems whatsoever commanding the respect of leaders around the world (or citizens for that matter). He is not intimidated by anyone or any situation, and that sort of confidence is an absolute necessity for the POTUS. We learned that he has no problems performing under pressure - whether it's taking a set of tough questions from the Israeli press corp, giving a speech in from of a foreign crowd of 200,000 (the largest he's ever given), or just nailing a 3 pointer in one shot with all our troops looking on. This isn't luck, the man knows what he's doing.

As for McCain - we learned that he hasn't been taking his Ginko Biloba. We also learned that he wants to be president so bad that he's completely abandoned all civility, going so far as to accuse his opponent of sedition and treason while he's on foreign soil. We've learned that McCain has the capacity to sink far lower than any of us every expected.
Pat in Boston
"Keith" was a hack on ESPN and he is a hack now. he is the WPIW everyday. the adolation he recieves here is vary scary.
McWAAAA...Haven't seen such a bunch of crybabies since kindergraten...
Either the folks at culturethreads.com have lost their minds, or they have a good (interesting?) point.  Take a look......

First Read:  Only time will tell if this week is a turning point, I am very sceptical of present polling results.
At some point, preferably soon, could you address the question how is the polling done?  Are these only long registered voters with home land lines or do they include recently registered voters who may only use a cellphone?

I suspect that cell phone users are not being polled and if they are not, how can the polls be any kind of picture?   Please inform us.
How many others have stopped watching the arrogant over-reaching GOP Joe?  I get more balanced news from Fox and Friends in the morning...
Pat, appreciate the thoughts, but Rachel is by far the more clear thinker and more gifted speaker.  I hope David "Hair Boy" Gregory learns to avoid stepping on her opinions/analysis as it really detracts from his show.
Courtesy of slate.com, "Bugs Bunny vs. Daffy Duck"...

http://www.slate.com/id/2185720/

This article was written about contests for the nomination between Senator Obama and Senator Clinton...that Obama was cool, calm and collected (Bugs Bunny) while Clinton was rattled and flustered (Daffy Duck).

What we've seen this week is the role of Daffy Duck now shifting to Senator McCain.  He "triple-dog-dared" Obama to make this overseas trip and his reaction to what Obama has done reminds me of the petulant child who threatens to hold his breath if he doesn't get his way.

- His "credentials" to his press corps as the "JV Squad".
- His trip to a German restaurant in Ohio yesterday.
- His week full of commentary about the media coverage Obama has received.

...this all makes McCain appear small and petty.  Instead of fighting to be heard he seems more likely to sit in the corner sulking.

PS - McCain, for the love of God, stop laughing at your own jokes!
I HEARD THAT THE WOUNDED TROOPS WERE UPSET AND QUITE DISSAPPOINTED that Mr. Obama did not visit them in Germany.

Were they informed that Sen. Obama was forbidden from visiting the wounded troops in Germany by the State department.  That is why he could not see them, though they had been on his itinerary.
I will be very suprised if McCain can keep up this pace, I dont even understand why hes moving up in the polls.? I think it must be because people dont like Obama.  Because McCain hasnt done anything this week that would make him move up in the polls, McCain needs to take another Nap, Just LIke He did on the Conan Obrien show., did you see it., I couldnt believe it.  This guy is getting old.  I dont think he has the energy it takes to be President. If you want to see the video of him falling asleep on the Conan Obrien show they have it at this site. http://www.mccanes.com
So - 'cynics would say' ??? This morning on Morning Joe, Andrea Mitchell stated that Obama was going to Landstahl with one aide and no cameras, just as he took no cameras when he visited the wounded/injured while he was in Afghanistan and Iraq. I expected better from First Read.  After griping about this whole tour - WHICH McCAIN goaded Obama into making now -- was one big photo op - nothing Obama could do would be viewed as just being a senator in the area. He followed every 'rule' that apparently is for Democrats only, I mean do you REALLY think anyone would stop McCain from visiting the wounded in Germany? Oh yeah, that's right, when it comes to the military - McCain is today's Patton, he can do no wrong, even if he can't keep his geography straight.
I agree that this week was a turning point and McCain provided it. His being shown to be not the happy warrior he tries to project but a mean-spirited cranky old man has displayed his true colors when events are not going his way. The "willing to lose a war to win an election" comment was so far over the line and smeared not only Obama but all Americans who might dare to challenge the wisdom of a war of choice. I'll never trust his judgement again.

John McCain does not have the temperament to lead a modern democracy and is not emotionally fit for the job of President.
What is the deal with the snarky comments on how the most cynical voters will view the aborted visit to Landstuhl?  Your Andrea Mitchell reported yesterday that  Barack planned on going sans media before he canceled. Had you reported that as well, your comment would seem pretty petty.  I find FR to be most enjoyable when you don't establish or propagate spin for either candidate.

Obama '08
Yesterday, actually, McCain finally seemed comfortable being the broccoli candidate -- embracing his role as the serious guy juxtaposed to the rock star opponent.

First Read!!! He has NO OPTION! He is green with envy that he can hardly contain it. He's worse then the broccoli candidate.
McCain can't simply hope Obama loses this election or fails to adjust his campaign sail enough to capture the strong Democratic wind.

'That's right, he needs to VOTE for it.  Tee hee, sorry you guys left the door open for that one."

and from yesterday:

---I'm just a bitter guy clinging to my guns and religion....  Obama, a man of the people---my a$$.... Anthony, Wilmington, DE. (Sent Thursday, July 24, 2008 11:58 AM)

Anthony, you want to know how I can tell you are a Republican?  You have dollar signs coming out of you’re a**.  Clearly the economy isn’t affecting you.

This Buds for you!  Gary Schear, bozeman Montana (Sent Thursday, July 24, 2008 10:27 AM)

Gary, I think you mean this “Belgian’s” for you?  Once the McCain’s cash in their stock options, they stand to net enough to pay off about a month’s worth of charging on the credit cards.

PS.  McCain is so Pro Life, he can’t even support the withdrawal method in Iraq.  It could however be his response to the Viagra-Gate question.
I'm kind of surprised - with all of McCain's whining and crying over the last week, you'd think the 'diaper' jokes would be flying all over the place. But I guess it 'depends' on your point of view. HA!
So was Bush ever reprimanded for the "Mission Accomplished" debacle.  Arguably, wasn't that a campaign photo op?
Lots of liberal banter here.

Translation: blah blah blah blah blah
Let’s check the scoreboard for the week.

Candidate O has successful trips to 2 war zones, tells a 4 star General who he will work for starting JAN 20, has another successful trip to another Mideast hot spot, gets everyone to adopt his foreign policy objectives, re-validates America’s commitment to the Golden Rule in front of 200,000 people and makes a jump shot right out of the box.

Candidate M has successful trips to the cheese aisle and a sausage house, tells tales about a Colonel, has a gaffe a day, can’t remember which countries border Afghanistan, enters a new dementia, re-defines the word surge and hasn’t seen the football since the kickoff.

Standby, the judges are ready to declare their scores…
Scarborough- passes because he is too jaded to accurately analyze
Matthews- candidate O was cocky and gets a zero, candidate M gets a free pass and a 10
Todd- Agrees with Matthews, and swears his wife doesn’t work for candidate M
Mitchell- Agrees with Matthews & Todd but lowers candidate O’s score to -10
All the Angels in Heaven- liberalism is the cure to the Neo-con plague
American electorate- gives candidate O the White House and candidate M the outhouse.

I listened to Sen Obama's speech 3 times and read the transcript, not once did I hear him promise anything.  He talked about a lot of hopes and dreams, but not once did I hear him say "I promise you this......."  Yet Andrea Mitchell reported to Brian Williams that he promised several of things he usually does in a campaign speech given in America. I continue to be amazed and appalled at how easily these journalist put words in the candidates mouth with what can only be described as artistic license.  I thought it was funny how she complained about not having access to Sen Obama and she couldn't evaluate the press conference because the questions were not asked by "real journalist".  Mayhap she would have had more confidence in the questioners if they'd asked about "flag pins, rev wright or bittergate"  Aren't those the questions REAL reporters have been asking the guy?  Can we do an Andrea Mitchell approval rating?  It can't be that high after she said nothing for over 3 weeks during Sen Clinton's "snipergate" about how SHE was there!  Not until the videos came out did she admit she was there and there were no shots fire.  Of course, no one on the set dared ask her why she didn't say anything sooner.  Just like Kelly O'Donnell failed to ask Sen McCain how Sen Obama's speech was any different than the ones he gave in Canada and Columbia (well other than content, style and crowd reaction).  No one has flat out asked Sen McCain if he realizes he's accusing Sen Obama of treason or sedition when he makes the claim he'd "rather win a political campaign and lose a war".  I'd also be interested to hear him answer the question "Knowing what you know now about the absence of WMD's and the difficulties we faced in Iraq, do you admit you were wrong about how easy we'd win or how we'd be greeted by the Iraqi people.  Finally, Senator McCain, given a do over, would you vote against the invasion?"  Of course we'll never hear that because Fox wants Sen McCain to win and the other stations want to "keep it close" so they can enjoy the same ratings Fox gets.  Remember the week of the 4th when Joe Scarborough used his role as host for RFTWH to ridicule and discount Rachel Maddows assertion that Sen Obama did NOT flip/flop on his Iraq withdrawal strategy?  He accused her of not understanding English and even took a vote amongst the panelist (I don't say this is sexist because he did the same junk to the guy from Newsweek the night before). I found it ironic then outrageous that a week later he had a guest on Morning Joe from factcheck.org who used their infamous "truth-o-meter" to show that Sen Obama had indeed been consistent with his statements.  No apology to Ms Maddow, no acknowledgement he was wrong and he's even continued to say Sen Obama has flip/flopped on the issue.  Yet he's now criticizing Sen Obama for failing to admit when he's wrong because he won't specifically say "the surge was successful".  I dropped my bag of cheetos when he said he (Joe S.) always admits when he's wrong.  These guys are so quick to talk about Sen Obama's "hubris" but I think they need to take a look at their own.
THE BEAST--No it's not the huge computer in Belgium. It is the 24 hour cable news media. Hungry, hungry for any scrap of food.  Eat it, then re-eat it. Poll numbers is great food. Why are the numbers different, whose up, whose down, what do the inside numbers say.
How can state numbers differ from National numbers. (You might want to ask a statistician instead of a pundit) Where's Hillary? Where's Bill? The point to all this is...relax and take a pill.  We have thirty days till the Demo Convention, the GOP Convention, the debates. It is still July.  The candidates are so different, the numbers will separate soon.

Yes, the turning point is close. Obama will make very few slips and McCain will average about 5 gaffe's a week.  If you have time, count them and average them per week.

The President is sending envoys to Iran.  Just like Obama suggested.  Obama, Maliki, want the war to stop.  It will. McCain want to say "I told you so." regarding the war...But the conversation is about leaving.

McCain is to talk to the Dalai Lama.  That will make the more rigid Christian conservatives raise an eyebrow and wonder, Why?  There is a stark difference between a grumpy old man and a younger man, full of energy and a vision for the future.  American will see that.  MSNBC does not have to spin that, just report it. Relax...
Even if the MoneGone isn''t working with McCain, let's all remember who they work for---BUSH, who supports McCaine (even if McC is embarassed by that support.)  Instead of snubbing our wounded children (he visited them in Iraq), he was ordered away from them by Dumbya's MoneyGone.
That's ok, because while Obama was doinng more for the cohesion of the NATO Alliance in one afternoon than Dumbya did in eight years, McCain was in some beergarden in Ohio, wowing seven people by saying "Ich bein shizakopf!"
finally you guys are talking about tim kaine.  He is definitely my number one pick and I bet he will be VP

McCain made another! gaffe during the CBS interview that the media didnt pick up on

What will put Obama over the top:

The Dem Convention - Exciting and Inspirational

The Rep Convention - Boring with same old hacks.

Selection of a strong VP Running Mate by Obama that will shore up undecideds.

Ground swell of support for Obama that will follow the Dem Convention by the youth (right now they are enjoying their summer breaks).

More blunders and gaffes by McCain that will convince more people his mental capacities are not what they used to be.

Debates where Obama will be full of energey and McCain will look old and confused. McCain may even lose that famous temper of his duirn g these debates.

Continued negative attacks by McCain and his campaign aganist Obama. People will get tired of the attacks and reject them.

A very strong African Amercian and Hispanic vote for Obama in November.

A lack of support and turn out by some on the far right for McCain.

Jim Miklaszewski gave the reason why Obama couldn't go to Landstuhl. “Political candidates, including the president, are not permitted to use military facilities as a campaign backdrop or anything that could be perceived as being part of a political campaign." Obama wanted to show respect for the military. HE WAS TOLD BY THE PENTAGON IT WOULD BE SEEN AS A POLITICAL EVENT. He visits military hospitals in the states all the time (unannounced so the press doesn't follow). He has tremendous respect for the military! MCCAIN WOULD HAVE TURNED IT INTO A POLITICAL EVENT if he would have gone!!! (just like he did with the visit to the Holocaust visit).

NObama:

McCAIN has done an excellent job countering the extreme NObama HYPE -

The Polls are TIGHTENING !!!

****  President McCAIN '08 !!
Great post to Pat in Boston and BTW, Keith Olbermann is a God. And yes, he is about the only one that does speak the truth and attack the "right wingers" back with their own nonsense, pandering crap of wanabe news and that is what I love about him.

Obama/Olbermann 08
Obama and his staff are to be commended. The images, the interactions with world leaders, the crowds and Obama's speech in Berlin were all superb. The fact that Obama navigated the MSM without making a major gaffe is to be applauded. Honestly, the MSM seemed saddened that they could only report about the trip in a positive way.

Obama's international trip has taken the air out of the Republican attack machine, which said that Obama was inexperienced on foreign policy. The fact that Maliki and even the Bush administration are endorsing Obama's foreign policy approach is clear evidence that Obama is ready to lead our nation.

I was so proud of Obama this week. And I'm so proud of the goodwill he's created about America in other countries. The American flags being waved by Germans says it all.

America can return to its former glory if we elect Obama.
Last night on MSNBC - I saw something that touch my heart - and give me a sign of hope.

Brian and Andrea - just reported the news - no spin -no personal additives - just reported the news.

It was a breath of fresh air...I said to my self -finally in a long time I felt respected by the news.

I hope you guys continue because believe me -

America will start to sway to NBC for factual and proper news board casting

We are tired of being feed with non-sensual and bias news...of being insulted by the main stream media and the GOP's.

Fox News and others like them - they will stay on no matter their ratings - because they have special interest feeding them money.  So – they can entertain and continue to flash their pretty ladies and sexual innuendoes to gain a continued viewing audience.

We Smart Americans with values and respect for our country will watch MSNBC and read FR.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
Here is your first indication of a big bounce coming:

Obama is up 5% in the new Rasmussen poll this morning.

Go Obama!
It will be interesting to watch how the McCain camp responds to this week. It has to realize it performed incredibly poorly, so it has to be feeling some pressure to "find its voice."

There are interesting parallels to this Obama v McCain race and the previous Obama v Clinton one.

Both McCain and Clinton didn't manage money well. Both were/are pushing an experience theme. McCain is now test-driving some of the same talking points (reactive talking points, as Obama has managed to position himself constantly as the center of gravity in the race).
The Bush administration is doing their own type of campaigning by trying to blur the lines of distinction between Senator Obama and mccain.  The only problem, the dumba**, is making Senator Obama look smarter!  I love it when the wheels of stupidity come back and roll over the person trying to hurt others.
Pat in Boston,

There is a reason why Air America is financially struggling.  There is a reason why MSNBC is the lowest ranked cable news network on TV.  There is a reason Rush Limbaugh just got a renewed contract for his talk radio show.  There is a reason Fox News is the highest rated cable news network (O'Reilley is number watched cable show).

The majority of America is center/right, not left!  Yes, Bush has made many mistakes I don't agree with.  Yes, the GOP should have a stronger conservative candidate than John McCain.  However, I firmly believe the majority of Americans do not want to see their country turned into a socialist society where the government makes nearly all the decisions for them.

Obama has declared One Trillion Dollars in new spending in the first four years of his term.  Where is that money going to come from?  "The rich?"  Why should you penalize people who have worked hard to get where they have professionally and finacially by taking a huge portion of their income?  Why do people who make $30000 and have four kids get back $3000 more in a tax refund than they even paid?

You liberals seriously need to look at the social policies Obama wants to set in place.  The EU's financial system is struggling.  Germany's health care system is bankrupt and you want to bring those things to the US?
Republicans....Who are you people? Voting for McCain you must be either from another planet or your brain cells simply evaporated.... Smart people pay attention what is going on in this country and McCain would be the last person they would vote for.
"But just asking: Did this week tell us more about Obama or McCain? Watching McCain chasing the news cycle and his inability to not let Obama get under his skin -- and the campaign's -- suggests that they could be reactive from this day forward."

------------------------------------------
This is the most insightfully written post in FR in ages. No offense, I know it's the summer lull, but lately posts have been an excerise in cut & paste.
This was not as much of a Turning point for McCheesy as it was a BURNING point.  The funny thing is he is burning up his own chances with lies and slanderous smears.  Then the GRIN... scary, isn't it?  Has anyone in his camp told him to get some CREST WHITENING STRIPS for those bottom teeth?
Pat in Boston, (my favorite city, if not for the cold winters, I'd be living there)  I so enjoy your insightful posts always done so respectfully, I agree re Keith. I watch him faithfully every night and have for a long time, he and Rachael are the true leaders in a fight for a decent and honorable way of thinking.

We do have to fight, every day I tell myself, not this time will I allow anyone, to detract in any way from my strong desire to put this country back on the right track. Supporting Barack Obama is my way of working towards that goal.

The main stream media, for the most part, are just not morally capable of challenging politicians on their positions.

Just yesterday, Kelly O'Donnell, had the perfect opportunity to challenge, Sen McCAin, about speeches he gave in Canada and Columbia as he was criticizing Sen Obama's speech in Berlin.   As she travels on the "Straight Talk express" she probably wanted to keep that access open and thereby threw her integrity out the window.   Same thing with Andrea Mitchell, she is so anti Obama she doesn't bother to hide it.
This is the only place I found someone on record saying that McCain can't win by default. He has to make a case. Yesterday, the commentary was the NBC poll saying that Obama is riskier. One can easily argue that McCain's forgotten facts, lost facts, and created facts, combined with a temper make him scary. Think about it, voters are asked to put his finger on the most powerful military machine in history and he is showing us intellectual and emotional instability! His behavior this week is not funny. It may be disqualifying and the press has a responsibility to probe him hard. We nned to know how he holds up under pressure. His behavior this week says he can't. If he can't he should be disqualified.
Bravo Pat from Beantown is all I can say Bravo. And a hardy AMEN.
I'm in agreement on the momentum issue as to McCain being urely reactionary.  Folks, he came across this whole week as nothing but a frustrated grump who is barely hoding onto the frayed string of attention.  And as for that p!ss poor remark about Obama winning the campaign versus winning the war?  That redefines the low road and is extremely unbecoming to a United States Senator framing another United States Senator in that manner.  Obama's remarks in speaking with Brian Williams to that snarky comment was first class, and he could have had McCain for lunch.
I think Senator McCain's remark about Senator Obama willing to lose a war to win an election is a sign of weakness. The McCain campaign is so desperate for attention that the are willing to cross the line on civility to make a point. It is sad that they have stooped this low. Go Obama
Lots of liberal banter here.

Full Moon, you sound like you have a future as Obama's speech writer. Actually, your 'blah blahs" have more substance then Obama wants in his speeches, you'll need to dumb it down a bit.
NObama:

McCAIN has done an excellent job countering the extreme NObama HYPE -

The Polls are TIGHTENING !!!

Ooopps!  New rasmussen poll has Obama up by 5% this morning.
Pat, Boston, MA,
Although I normally agree with most of your posts...AND I normally agree with Both Keith and Rachel, I think it is STILL unfair to classify either of them as presenting fair and balanced news coverage. Both Keith and Rachel are obviously pro-Obama (as am I), however how can you say this is any different than the Republican biased view that Joe Scarborough and Pat Buchannen spew out everyday? I don't see the difference other than I agree with one and not the other. This, however, is STILL not to be considered fair and balanced. Just because you agree with a journalist, doesn't make it unbiased and balanced. It simply means you agree with thier opinion. I have YET to find any journalist in this election cycle that can provide a fair and balanced assessment of the two candidates WITHOUT interjecting their personal opinion.
McCain has not looked presidential (besides for a very small 3 minutes at the NAACP) since Obama clinched the nomination.  I believe he is teetering on the edge of a temper explosion.  This entire campaign has been a chessmatch but Sen. McCain is only a intermediate checkers player.  People make absurd statements like "McCain was down and out and still won his nomination", "He's good at running when everything in his campaign is in chaos".  Well, the truth is that the GOP field was extremely weak this year.  He is outclassed by Sen. Obama plain and simple and it angers him.  He can't believe that some rookie is defeating him so handily.  Another person had this same response around Feb. 17th of this year.  Sen. McCain has been so vicious this week because he can not afford for the Iraq issue to be a draw because he knows nothing about the economy.  Dr. Phil has shattered any chance of McCain coming off as being empathetic on the economy issue.  This is indeed McCain's worst week of the campaign.  With his abominable accusations of late, he has shown that there isn't a level that he won't stoop to.
IDTT in Laurel, I completely agree.  Andrea Mitchell is turning herself into a  shill, and I'm not even sure of a shill for-----McCain?  Clinton?  Nader?  Can someone help me on that?
