Obama camp explains Landstuhl decision

Posted: Friday, July 25, 2008 12:45 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones and NBC's Jim Miklaszewski and Courtney Kube
ON PLANE EN ROUTE BERLIN TO PARIS -- In a briefing aboard the flight to Paris today, Robert Gibbs, a senior strategist for the Obama campaign, came to the back of the plane at least three separate times to explain to reporters that the decision to cancel the senator's trip to Ramstein and Landstuhl came after word from the Pentagon that it would violate Defense Department regulations.

The impromptu briefing stemmed from confusion about two statements put out by the campaign -- one from Gibbs and the other from Gen. Scott Gration -- about the cancellation. Gibbs' statement had not mentioned the discussion with the Pentagon, while Gration's did.

"The statement that I sent out and the statement that Gen. Gration sent out are consistent in that what Gen. Gration learned from the Pentagon that the trip to Ramstein and Landstuhl will be viewed as a campaign stop," Gibbs said. "The decision that Sen. Obama made with that information was that we would not put our warriors in the position of being involved in a campaign stop. Therefore, he made the decision not to make the stop."

Gibbs explained it was the use of the campaign plane and staffers that would have violated the rules. "He could go as a United States senator, but it was pretty clear from the guidance that we received from the Pentagon that the trip would be viewed as a campaign stop," he said. "Given the information that we had received, Sen. Obama made the decision that we were not gonna have wounded men and women become involved in a campaign event or what would be perceived as a campaign event."

He said campaign was aware that Obama would be criticized either way -- for going or for canceling -- by his rivals and he reminded reporters that Obama quietly visited wounded troops at Walter Reed a few weeks ago and did it quietly.

The view from the Pentagon
Did the Pentagon discourage Obama from visiting Landstuhl? "No," says Pentagon spokesperson Bryan Whitman.

Did the Pentagon tell Senator Obama that it was inappropriate for him to visit because he is on a campaign trip? "No. That's inaccurate," Whitman said.

Was Obama's Senate office told that he and his Senate staff could visit the facility? "Absolutely."

"As a sitting United States senator, Obama obviously has an official interest in the well being of our service members and how the wounded are being treated," Whitman said, adding:"He is welcome to visit a military medical center any time that he wants to. As you all know, we do have certain policy guidelines for political campaigns and elections and what is appropriate and what's not appropriate in those situations," Whitman said. "The Pentagon did not tell the senator that he could not visit Landstuhl."

"If you are both a sitting senator and a political candidate when you are doing things like a visit to Landstuhl, you need to do it in your capacity as a sitting senator or you have to do it with the restrictions that apply," Whitman added. Those restrictions include the law that campaign events may not be conducted on a military installation.

Wrong title. Should be "Obama spins yet another embarrassing problem".
What difference does it make? Democrats and Obama hate the military. They just need the photo-ops for their commercials.
Why is still a story? FR, why don't you report about what ABC did? I guess birds of a feather flock together.

The MSM is AFRAID of a Barack presidency.
The Morning Joe show is so slanted that it is SICKENING TO WATCH.  I have to go else where.  Has anone else had it with that guy and his yes men/woman???

"Don't be fooled by the rock concerts. The Europeans might applaud a good speech now and then, but the Europeans are already saying they don't trust Obama.
All in all, looks like Bush winning in November.
Robert Whittier Ca (Sent Friday, July 25, 2008 10:27 AM)"

Robert, I would appreciate it if you could back up your assertion with facts, please.  I have not read anywhere that the Europeans are saying anything of the sort.  Thanks.
"You liberals seriously need to look at the social policies Obama wants to set in place.  The EU's financial system is struggling.  Germany's health care system is bankrupt and you want to bring those things to the US?
Beth Lewisville TX (Sent Friday, July 25, 2008 9:52 AM)"

Beth--

Your points are well taken.  I thought Pat wrote a wonderful, thoughtful post.  Your rebuttal was good as well, although you could have left out the "you liberals" part.

Anyway, last I checked, OUR financial system is ALREADY struggling and our health care system is a complete mess.

If you don't support Sen. Obama's ideas, that's fine, but I have not heard any better ideas coming out of the McCain camp - or from anywhere else, for that matter.

The majority is centrist - you are correct about that.  However, I don't know if I would classify it as "centrist/right".  Rush gets a lot of listeners because he's a personality.  Repubs listen 'cause they agree with him, Dems listen because they want to laugh at him or get quotes to use as ammo.  Just because he has a lot of people listening to him (as an entertainer, or comedian as Keith calls him), I would not take that to mean that everyone embraces walks the GOP line.

With added success comes responsibility.  You make more, yes you should put more in.  You can afford it.  The people struggling to make it cannot.  If you are successful, why DON'T you want to help the less fortunate?

I don't think either candidate has all the answers - however, I think McCain is further away from the "right" answers than Sen. Obama is.

P.S. As for the person who called Keith a "hack"...I would counter with the fact that I don't see many sportscasters that transition almost seamlessly into a newscaster role as he has.  In fact, I cannot think of one.  Can you?  If he really was a "hack" than how do you explain his success?
Another Obama gaffe. They're starting to really add up.
Obama just cannot keep his stories straight.  He will say anything to win and do anything to win the election.
Everyone should be afraid ot an Barack presidency.  He offers socialism.

Just Tell Obama NO!!!  Just like he told the troops in Germany.
Hmmmm, why do I feel that what the Pentagon told the Obama campaign yesterday and what they are telling the press today is different?

I'm not say the Pentagon is lying, but I am saying that they have lied in the past. (Don't get me started on that.)

And I am saying that I don't think the Obama campaign would have canceld the trip if the Pentagon gave them the answer they are giving now.

But that's just me.
Oh please....get over yourself already.  I guess Senator Obama thinks that the millions of people who didn't vote for him are as lamentably unenlightened and naive as the ones who did.

Karen (Sent Friday, July 25, 2008 12:33 PM)

Worse. Obama, and his little followers, think of them as the enemy.
I think you need to do some more digging.  TPM and The Huffington Post have both independently verified that the Pentagon did indeed tell the Obama campaign it would be inappropriate to visit the wounded troops.
"If you are both a sitting senator and a political candidate when you are doing things like a visit to Landstuhl, you need to do it in your capacity as a sitting senator or you have to do it with the restrictions that apply," Whitman added. Those restrictions include the law that campaign events may not be conducted on a military installation."

Seems like there was a reasonable chance that Obama's visit to the troops might have violated the Pentagon's rules, and Obama decided not to take a chance. I think his decision was wise. But whatever he did would have been attacked by the MSM and McCain.
The pentagon response was very murky. I guess he made the right call.

I'm praying those numbers will come back over the pond and multply by 1000 times votes for Obama..

But not bad for Tiergarten(animal garden) speeches to go too...where was the bands and music?...maybe next time..
Sorry to inform you Luke, that there's alot more democrats and Obama supporters in the military than you realize!
Why didn't the prospective Commander-in-Chief know the policy?  Why didn't he discern the subtle nuances of official business versus a campaign stop?

It's getting a lot of publicity, though, and multiple chances to dazzle us with eloquent spin, whether from the deity himself or his disciples.
Hashville_fan: Hmmmm, why do I feel that what the Pentagon told the Obama campaign yesterday and what they are telling the press today is different?

Sure. Everyone else is lying, except Obama. Obama can't lie, he's a Saint, and Saints don't lie.

Liberals. You can't laugh with them, so you might as well laugh at them.
They wanted to prevent another opportunity for Barack to garner more support, especially having anything to do with the war. This smells of McCain...
That's right posters put the pressure on the make these MSM fools tell the truth about Senator Obama because they are doing a heck of a job missinfoming the public about this trip to see the soldiers thing.
This is a really touching (and short) story about how Senator Obama has already changed this country for the better:

"Just A Second, Obama is speaking"
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/7/25/93510/1800/555/556771
There have been so many versions of this story by the Pentagon that it's beginning to sound like any other story that's come out of this administration. Two dats, four different expanations fro different people in the Pentagon.  It is any wonder it took 3 years to get their act together in Iraq.

Saddest part of this story is that the Administration is using the military as a political tool.  The militery has ALWAYS been politically impartial until this presidency.  When an administration used the military for political gain it denegrates the sacrifeces of our heroes in Iraq and Afghanastan.

It's not a surprise, just a long list of unconscienable events perpetrated by this President.

L, MI:

Check out the NY Times.  While the 200,000 rock fans appeared to be happy, several political leaders felt that Obama was vague and, this is hilarious, were concerned that he would continue following current policies!

From their interpretation, Obama has set the stage to either really disappoint the Europeans, or all the BS about supporting Israel, blah, blah, blah was just a sop to the American people and the Israelis.  The rest was, as Andrea Mitchell stated, was "lofty rhetoric".

The Pentagon sounds as though they've taken a 'John McCain' course in '99 ways to explain confusion'. The visual aid that accompanies the cliff notes is the CBS interview of John mangling his 'surge' rhetoric.

I don't believe the Bush Pentagon, any more than the denial that Maliki had been mis-translated in der Speigel interview.
Sorry but wanted to get this off my chest.  What's with the blatant dis-respect to Michelle Obama in the form of these snarky comments and stories: about other women of celebrity being engaged to Obama or having an email relationship with him, being an Obamagirl (and showing your butt on the internet), that an Olmert secretary said Barack was a hunk, that Angela Merkel would not resist a Bush style back rub from Obama, and the completely disgusting joke between Andrea Mitchell and scarborough this morning. it went something like this: What do yo think barack will take away from his visit to france?  Carla Brunie.  oh and let me not forget Rove's country club comment.  Michelle is this man's wife and she deserves that respect. It's not cute to joke inappropriately about these things especially when there is no hint, evidence or clue that Obama is unfaithfull or has been unfaitfull.  I always say respect the wives and that counts Cindy AND Carol McCain.
He couldnt use it for PR so he cancled it. Now he realizes how bad it looks so hes tring to put makeup on the pig.
You can't keep a good man down. This is the man I want to be our President!

Bush lies, the Pentagon lies and Mccain lies!  It is scary and I am filled with terror at the thoughts of a Minime-Bush administration.

We'll see how the mccain supporters feel in another month when the recession starts to take a greater hold with the wipe-out of the housing market.  It ain't over yet.
Hey where is the story about how made some Israelis are over the Obama camping plastering the entrance to the "Wall" with his campaign posters????

I'm new here. Is this when we're supposed to bow? Or is it kneel?
I so deeply, deeply resent McCain, Bush, Condi, and the Pentagon for their complicit antics to politicize Seantor Obama's visit with our wounded troops at Landstuhl.

I'm so happy he called our soldiers. I pray they were satisfied with their special phone calls.

Pat, Boston,

Thank you for your post in 'First Thoughts' this morning.

Keith Olbermann has very much impressed me with his in depth committment when reporting.

He is the most insightful investigative newsperson we have in politics. He sees, and digs for what is either ignored by other journalists, or perhaps it's  over their heads. He's brilliant, and has an amazing work ethic like Mr. Russert.

I thought if he could somehow tame his partisan demons, he would be perfect to inherit Mr. Russert's position of 'keeping them honest'.

But you are absolutely correct. We need him to continue to yell at us from deep in that corner they've stuck him in at MSNBC. We hear you Keith!

Pat, someone's comment declaring your thoughts as scary, has me shaking my head. What is with all the FEAR???? We are Americans. We need to pull ourselves together. Stop being afraid of everything America!

**************

Jerry, corpus christi tx,

You did not respond to a well meaning question, (asked by one of the posters yesterday), as to your's, and your family's well being, with regard to the hurricane Wednesday. Are you, and your family alright?

Jerry, I hate the murder, and gore on MSNBC after hours too.
As Senator Obama said he would be criticized if he went and criticized if he didn't.  I'm glad he chose the method he did, deciding not to involve the wounded in the slams against him.  I applaud his efforts to contact them by phone.  Maybe he can go back and see them at a time he is not using campaign funds and in his capacity as a Senator as he has done with many veterans in the past.

From Salon.com:

Quote of the day
From an Associated Press story about some comments Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.) made upon returning from Iraq, to which he traveled with Barack Obama:

"Quit talking about, 'Did the surge work or not work,' or, 'Did you vote for this or support this,'" Hagel said Thursday on a conference call with reporters.
"Get out of that. We're done with that. How are we going to project forward?" the Nebraska senator said. "What are we going to do for the next four years to protect the interest of America and our allies and restructure a new order in the world. ... That's what America needs to hear from these two candidates. And that's where I am."...'

This guy is good
Sec of Defense Hagel ?
This guy makes a lot of sense to me

Sec of State Biden ?
VP John Edwards ?
Christopher Dodd is another great Senator who could really help an Obama Administration

Talk about a dream team

(maybe McCain could cater the beer for picnics)

John McCain, More of the Same

Take a nap John; you’ve had a long morning

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I see you have John McCain's sense of humor - very cheeeeeeeeeeesy! lol

We'll see whose gonna be laughing in November - no matter the outcome, I win!

Either we will get a "change we can believe in" or the Republican Party will finally get enough rope to hang themselves.

One way or another, America WILL finally know the truth - the Republican Party is just a front group for the corporations that really run country. Period.
Liberals don't pray. At least not to any God. Maybe to Obama, who they think is a God. Obama certainly has become their religion.
If one is prone to knock liberals for being too social, too much interested in the security and welfare of this great country, they should really be frightened of people who declare they are conservatives because they have a terminal disease that attacks the brain first.
This "Damed if you do and damned if you don't" mentality has to stop.  Both sides seem to wait for the simplest issues to pounce on.

Obama wanted to go to the base and wish soldiers well knowing that if he did he would be accused of playing for the camaras and if he did not some idiot would be posting that he doesn't really care about the soldiers.

Same holds true for McCain.  Too many left wing zealots are quick to want to slam the guy over non-issues.....

There are plenty of legitimate issues to debate so lets stick to them.
What difference does it make? Democrats and Obama hate the military. They just need the photo-ops for their commercials - say Luke S. from Texas
**************************************************
Right. Your guys (Bush and Cheney) are the traitorous chickenhawks who have pushed the military to the breaking point, failed to support Jim Webb's Vet bill, and have looted the national treasury to the disproportionate benefit of the rich (above $1M/year).

How dare you say Democrats hate the military.
Get informed - please don't vote for McCain.
Did the Pentagon tell Senator Obama that it was inappropriate for him to visit because he is on a campaign trip? "No. That's inaccurate," Whitman said.

This statement by the Pentagon spokes person blatantly shows that because Senator Obama is traveling with his campaign staff not his Senate staff he could not go to the base.  Those saying the campaign is spinning this are so blind and deaf they cant comprehend reality.  The Senator choose not to say they were told they couldn’t go in hopes to prevent this incident from looking like the administration was fighting them, but the GOP “snipers” couldn’t help but attack. The Bush administration has made us all dumber from just listening to there lies; we cannot even tell what is truth anymore.  Open your eyes, ears, and mind so you can read between the lines!
Either the folks at culturethreads.com have lost their minds, or they have a good (interesting?) point.  Take a look......
First Condi is told to issue a release that none of the US Embassies were to give assistance to any requests by Obama's campaign during their trip, the State Dept. employees in Berlin were told they could not attend the speech and then the senator's trip to Ramstein and Landstuhl was canceled after word from the Pentagon that it would violate Defense Department regulations. Does anyone really believe McBush would have had these things happen to him if the shoe was on the other foot?

I guess we can expect Congressional hearings so that this huge issue can be cleaned up. We can all look forward to Senator Biden berating yet another decorated military officer for being so callous towards The Obama.
Why do I hear that cackling voice of George Bush in the background of the Pentagon's answer? They are his toadies, you know.
That's why I say cover your A$$ when working or dealing with the goverment.  Have proof will traval I live by!!!
Hey RNC staffers:

You attaack Obama for failing to make a visit.  Yet you defend Boy George and McVictory, whose policies caused these soldiers to lose their limbs so that Boy George could get re-elected?

I think a wounded soldier would gladly give up a visit from a politician if he could get the other half of his head or arm or leg back.
prrrrrrrrrrrrr....One ringie dingie......prrrrrrrrrr
Two ringie dingies.....

Oh hello this is the guy that doesn't have the time but you've paid the price for this call....
This is a story that needs more explaining...

Why was Obama not really able to go to those bases..?
Clearance problems....?
I smell censorship again...
Obama was not thinking of the wounded ...he was thinking of his image..?
Is fatigue setting in?
It's a silly controversy drummed up by the media and McCain. Besides, Obama ended up chatting with wounded verts via phone - no media around. That's what counts.

http://www.political-buzz.com/
Obama was told not to go by the Pentagon. Anyone who believes the Pentagon's denials under this administration is a fool.  Remember Central Command 5 days ago trying to lie and cover up Maliki's true statement ?       Wake up America.
