McCain: 16 months a 'good timetable'

From NBC's Mark Murray
In an interview on CNN today -- which the DNC is passing around -- McCain said that withdrawal from Iraq in 16 months is "a pretty good timetable."

That answer came when McCain was asked about Iraqi Prime Minister Maliki's earlier claim to Der Spiegel that Obama's 16-month plan "would be the right timeframe for a withdrawal, with the possibility of slight changes."

Of course, McCain did stress that such a withdrawal would "have to be based on conditions on the ground." But calling 16 months a "good timetable" is something McCain hasn't said before -- and probably never would have said a week ago.

The transcript:
BLITZER: What if Maliki persists? You're president and he says he wants US troops out and he wants them out, let's say in a year or two years or 16 months or whatever. What do you do? Do you listen to the prime minister?

MCCAIN: He won't. He won't. He won't. Because it has to be condition-based.

BLITZER: How do you know?

MCCAIN: Because I know him. And I know him very well. And I know the other leaders. And I know -- I've been there eight times, as you know. I know them very, very well.

BLITZER: So why do you think he said that 16 months is basically a pretty good timetable?

MCCAIN: He said it's a pretty good timetable based on conditions on the ground. I think it's a pretty good timetable, as we should -- or horizons for withdrawal. But they have to be based on conditions on the ground.

Old Man Yells at Cloud.  This guy is nuts.
HAHA.

Next week we'll hear

McCaine: This is what I was trying to say along. Obama took my idea.
IS IT ME OR IS THIS LITTLE DUDE TURNING OUT TO BE REALLY UNSTABLE?

HE CHANGES HIS MIND SO MUCH THAT I DON'T KNOW WHAT HE EVEN STANDS FOR ANYMORE.

IMAGINE HIM AT 3 A.M., GETTING THE CALL...IT BRING SHIVERS UP AND DOWN MY SPINE!!

HOW CAN ANY RATIONAL INDEPEDENT, LIKE MYSELF, VOTE FOR THIS LITTLE SCARY MAN...
Did anyone check the temperature of h--l today?  I think it froze over.

Obama 08
He has completely reversed himself.  Now he has to call himself a traitor.
We have just witnessed the mother of all flip-flops.  Now McCain says 16 months is a good timetable.  No more 50 or 100 years.  No more 2013, the end of his first term.  No more we can't leave it would be treasonous or there would be sectarian suicide.  All that is now in the past.

John McCain is endorsing the Obama position on Iraq. The man has no shame, honor or character. He is void of principles.  After this flip-flop it is clear that he will do or say anything to win.  Anything.
McCain chose to lose the war in Afghanistan when he voted for the war in Iraq.
Sounds just like Bush to me, but you probably only hear what Olberman let's through the filter.

…………………………………………………….
Let’s review.  Bush called Iran part of the ‘Axis of Evil” and vowed never to negotiate with them.  He wanted to bomb the Iranian nuclear refining facilities or have the Israeli’s do it for us.  Not once did he ever call for talks with the Iranians to engage them in a discussion of differences.  Not until Obama suggested it and was called “naïve”.  Now we have a contingent from the State Department in Iran doing exactly what Obama suggested.

…and you said that Obama’s statements today sounded like Bush to you?

I must be losing my cognitive senses.  Just plain simple unfiltered, unadulterated facts.
So....agreeing with Obama again?  Cause that's basically what Obama has been saying CONSTANTLY.

Why should McCain even run when he just parrots other people's ideas?
The only condition that matters is if Iraq wants us out or not!  That's it...nothing more matters.  The longer we stay unwanted, the more violent it gets.  All occupying forces throughout history as been defeats and pushed out.  For a military man McCain knows absolutely nothing about military history.  Perhaps if he paid attention in class and didnt gradaute in the botton 10% of his class.
If you mean by liberals, those people who fight when their rights and freedoms are infringed upon - Ira Freehold NJ

You mean like the right to choose to school other then the public ones? You mean the right to own a gun? You mean the Fairness Doctrine? You mean taxing people to death? Those rights? Those freedoms? Don't see too man libs fighting for those rights and freedoms.

As usual - libs are full of it, and themselves.

1) “You mean like the right to choose to school other then the public ones”?

There is a separation of church and state in this country as delineated by the Constitution.  Our tax dollars go towards public school education.  That is an education that every single American can receive at no charge.  Free.  Private or religious school education is a choice you make.  It is not a right guaranteed by the Constitution.

2) “You mean the right to own a gun”?

It is an absolute right, now guaranteed by the Supreme Court.  Second Amendment.  It was in all the newspapers.

3) “You mean taxing people to death”?

Again, the right for the government to tax Americans is mandated by an Amendment to the Constitution.  If you don’t like being taxed to death, then I suggest you look at the candidates’ tax proposals and you will find that Obama has proposed a middle-class tax cut while McCain intends to keep the Bush tax cuts permanent benefiting those that make over $250,000 a year.  Don’t want to be taxed to death, vote Obama.

Rights and freedoms as guaranteed by the laws of this country.  Would fight to the death to preserve them.  Personal privileges are things you pay for yourself in cash or by the way you vote!

Thanks for the question.
What other ideas of Obama's will McCain try to steal? Not looking good for the old man..Not looking good at all
omg! Those who lives in glass house should not throw stones.

McCain = Traitor!!!
Because he knows if he wins...
the neocon power will continue...

Here comes War with IRAN if this man makes it to the white house!  We will stay in Iraq for YEARS!
The only thing he wants to talk about is WAR!!  Have you ever wondered WHY?
Obama speaks of peace, building bridges with past allies, coming together again, for the United States to LEAD the world with our morals!!
McCain makes WAR...HIS ISSUE every day!  He doesn't talk about the economy, education, social security.
He talks about siding with BIG OIL in the name of the people!  He talks about TAX CUTS FOR THE RICH.
HE talks about SURGE SURGE SURGE...WAR WAR WAR !!!
This man would be WORSE THAN BUSH if he makes it to President.  His only fame is WAR, WAR, and WAR!

He voted AGAINST our own VERTERANS.
He voted against WOMENS RIGHTS every CHANGE HE GOT.
He has missed MORE SENATE VOTES THAN ANYONE, He is number ONE!
THIS is leadership qualities?
He is a WAR MONGORING, friend of LOBBYISTS, CORPORATIONS, and THE RICH!!
WAR
WAR
WAR!

First I am sorry for the post in the wrong blog but I never seem to get posted.
Can we please get it straight that Obama was NOT in the Senate and never had a chance to vote to go to Iraq or not!! I am not a McCain supportor nor a war supportor but Obama was not there and did not get the info the reps were handed.
Is McCain all there?  This is what Obama has been saying all along--and that McCain has been blasting him for--!?!  Why doesn't the media call McCain on his inconsistencies!?
You wait until the third paragraph to mention the little detail that he says it will be based on ground conditions -- not a regardless of situation?
Did anyone check the temperature of h--l today?  I think it froze over.

MCCAIN: 16 MONTHS A 'GOOD TIMETABLE'

I think this is one time Obama would agree with you! :-)

Obama/Biden '08
about time. an obvious slow learner.
McSayAnythingToWin is beyond belief..LOL..
DOH!
Obama probably wants to ask the soliders what it's like to serve their country, you know, honorably, unlike him.
Stu Tatts, St. Paul MN (Sent Friday, July 25, 2008 12:42 PM)

--------------------------------------------------

Are you implying that military service is the only way to serve one's country? Obama has served in several positions that benefit society.

Besides, according to your logic, Bush hasn't served honorably either.
Kelly O'Donnel should be fired! She just gave the most slanted, biased, unfair picture towards Senator Obama and pumping up the lying mccain.  No wonder this idiot gets by with his incompetence!  Truly amazing!  I have no respect for her as a reporter at all anymore.
I must need to get my hearing check because I could have sworn I've heard Senator Obama say this very thing months ago.
People now have to decide. Are Bush and McCain being sincere in finally agreeing with the American people's wishes on Iraq OR are they just saying whatever it takes for the Republicans to hold onto power because they are desperate?

Here is a clue. Look at their records of statements versus actions.
I posted this on an earlier thread but didn't make the time limit.  So here it is:

"When is the MSM going to get this right?  The surge in troops would not have succeeded without the Sunni Awakening.  The reason that violence has decreased in Iraq has four etiologies (not withstanding the fact that our troops have always fought well pre and post surge and that I have to agree with Gary Shear's acknowledgement of ‘So Ken's’ comment on the criminality of the entire effort):

1) The insurgency became co-opted by American money and diplomacy - point for Patreaus and company.

2) The Sunni made a pragmatic choice to use the Americans as their advocates in the Shia gov't. (of which they were otherwise being closed out), instead of using Al Qaeda as their military arm.  Without the support of the Sunni chieftains, Al Qaeda was finished.

3) The Shia militia, both those of Al Sadr and the forces from Tehran, have decided (strategically) to keep their powder dry for now; they'll fight the Civil War later.

4) Mixed areas have been ethnically cleansed.

It's been a calamatous course of events and the eye of the hurricane is upon us.  Truly, in retrospect this could have been predicted and would have been the outcome with or without a surge in troops.  John McCain wants to lump all of these factors under the all encompassing term of 'surge' and that dog won't hunt (although the Republicans do have an uncanny talent of conflating unrelated facts in order to prove their point - masters of propaganda that they are - it's up to us to separate the wheat from the chafe.)

It burns my a** how John McCain is taking credit for a strategy that should not be viewed as the cause for this temporary stability, in an area that will remain unstable for years to come.  In the long view, our continued presence as occupiers of a country involved in a civil war will win us no friends and gain us no security.  John McCain should know better, as it sounds a hell of a lot like Viet Nam.

John McCain, you and your allies in the senate (including many Democrats, who shall not be named) got us involved in this nightmare.  You are responsible for this mess and should be held accountable instead of being rewarded by election.  The course of events that have led to the relative stability in Iraq, even if you wish to take credit for it, would only be a fix for the horrible chaos that you and your cronies created.

You characterization of this conflagration as a conflict with Islamofacism is so simplistic and so downright ignorant that it is easy to see how your leadership would lead us to an Orwellian state of endless war. You are more dangerous than GWB because you actually have convictions and they are so painfully misdirected.
Obama '08"

P.S. I am flippin' amazed at this statement from McCain.  You know, most important to me is changing the mindset (as Obama has said) so that we get out of this conflict and never act so irresponsibly again.  I sense the very beginning of a change in this mindset and this is gratifying.  I want to live in America and not the Roman Empire.
Obama '08
We'll be out when the conditions are right and the Iraquis ask us to leave. No one can promise that it will happen in 16 months. It might, it might not.

The surge was the key element leading to conditions that now give hope for such a "timetable".  The same conditions would not have been accomplished by the Sunni alliance alone.  The surge was also instrumental in creating the conditions under which the Shiites backed off and the militias neutralized.

Let's hope the trend continues.  Right now, you've got the two major candidates and the sitting president pretty close to the same page.

And all because St. Barack ran for president.
Senator Obama,

You've got him! He flipped! Not because HE went on a fact finding mission, but because YOU went to Iraq, and showed Senator McCain for the incompetent that he is!

Believe me, team Obama is carefully recording, catagorizing, and sub-catagorizing all of McCain's gaffes, and flubs.

We have not seen the last of these blunders. They will be rolled out at the debates with precision by our Harvard Lawyer.

GO OBAMA GO!!!
What the heck? I thought that even talking about  leaving Iraq was treasonous? I am confused.

McCain does change with the wind. No back bone. What a surrender monkey (I guess). I mean, he is entertaining the idea of someday leaving Iraq.
Doesn't that make him unpatriotic? This is so confusing. GOP - Greedy Old People
Ira, Ira, Ira:

There would be talks with the Iranians if they would meet our conditions for talks.

The Iranians diss the U.S. and they have dissed the EU, and in case you have been paying attention, there were some little comments from Iran lately that indicated that they are going to diss Obama, too.

Bush has never said anything other than "all options are on the table." It's you and other lame brains that make your own interpretations as to what that means that really distort the issues.

In the last two days Obama said that "all options are on the table" as regards Iran.

I happen to think that your cognitive senses are OK.  You just need to apply them to a much longer attention span and a much bigger pool of information.

Do you bow, kneel, genuflect or prostrate yourself before your Obama shrine? Enquiring minds want to know.

Speaking of John Edwards:

Have a great weekend!

Maybe Obama is getting a taste of what Hilliary went through with all the bad press.  They don't have Hilliary to go after now so finally they go after Obama, but it does seem like the press loves him and really doesn't like McCain.
Thud! The sound of a McCain Flip....FLOP!  brother, it is embarrassing to be from the same state.
@MR... that's the intention. Muddy the waters until the American public cannot tell the truth from taters.

Here's how it works:
1. First deny the phenomenon, perhaps throwing in a few pieces of data that suggest the opposite (icebergs melting? but there’s more snow than ever at the poles! Scientists say x? Not these, who say y!).

2. Sort of admit the phenomenon, but deny that humans have anything to do with it.

3. Then, claim humans can do things that will clear up any bad consequences of the phenomena (ignore contradiction with #2, we WANT that! — the goal is to not be able to think clearly about our actions)

4. When people see that #3 admits the phenomenon, deny the phenomenon.

5. Repeat until the public will be more or less incapable of having anything proven to them rationally, and they give up thinking they should care about such proofs.

6. Enjoy rewards of a befuddled public (i.e. unfettered economic gain for corporate profiteers and unfettered power for those who should regulate them but won’t)

By the time the public figures it out, if they do, it's 7 1/2 years into an administration like the one we have now, 6 years into a war built on lies, and well into an economy that it is the tank because of folks like Phil Gramm and yes, Bill Clinton, with their deregulation and out-sourcing of the American Dream.

Open your eyes, America.
@Beth in Tx... per his logic, neither did Abraham Lincoln.

The media should bring the truth to the American public.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crises. The great point is to bring them the real facts."

And America should wake up and smell the B$, because the day of reckoning is coming, one way or the other.

"You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today."

(both quotes by Abe)
one more thought - McCain is saying that he confronted the Bush Administration earlier and told them that their strategy wasn't working, soooooo, what took nearly 5 years for them to take him for his word? Interesting how he likes to have his cake...and eat it too.
Donna, he wasn't in the Senate, but he gave this speech on 2 Oct 2002:

 http://www.barackobama.com/2002/10/02/remarks_of_illinois_state_sen.php
I knew he was against the war and I was also, it is just I keep reading posts from some stating how Obama voted against the war when McCain voted for it.  He wasn't there to vote.  Thats all!

Wolf Blitzer .... now there's another "unfair and biased" individual. (lib)
Actually
http://obama.senate.gov/news/060108-obama_obstacles/

This was his 2nd trip to Iraq while a U.S. Senator.
Donna, Albany NY, if you're going to correct people, you should include all the facts.

1) Few were handed any information.
2) the few (like Hillary Clinton) who received the NIE didn't even read it. The few who read it did not vote for the war.

3) Obama stated his position during his election race. It was very unpopular to do so at that time, so he had a great deal of pressure on him not to take that stance. Many try to belittle his stance, but if you notice, other dem senators do not.
Man this bitter old man is NUTS!!
McCain is saying it's a good timetable now, so he can say later on that at least he can admit he's wrong unlike Obama who still won't admit that McCain's surge worked. When will the MSM learn when they're being "played"?? Never, obviously!
Nevermind... with moderation, it's sometimes hard to read comments in the correct order. I see the point you were making Donna and the link's usefulness, idtt, laurel, thanks.

MCCAIN: 16 MONTHS A 'GOOD TIMETABLE'
--------
WOW from 100 years to 16 months, which is exactly  what Obama has been saying all along....

They call him FLIPPER, FLIPPER....

Old man needs a long rest....
