Obama responds to McCain's criticism

LONDON -- During a 15-minute press conference outside of 10 Downing Street here today, Obama responded to McCain's criticism of his five-country swing through Europe and the Middle East, as well as his Republican rival's comments on a timetable for withdrawing troops from Iraq.

"It's hard for me to understand Sen. McCain's argument. He was telling me I was supposed to take this trip. He suggested it, thought it was a good idea," the senator told reporters, some of whom were seated on the ground in front of him and or standing on the sidewalk across.

"John McCain has visited every one of these countries post-primary that I have. He has given speeches in Canada, in Colombia, Mexico," he continued. "So it doesn't strike me that we've done anything different than the McCain campaign has done, which is to recognize that part of the job of the next president and commander-in-chief is to forge effective relationships with our allies."

VIDEO: Speaking in London, Barack Obama defended his travels to Europe and the Middle East, arguing that America faces global issues that cannot be solved independently. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

McCain's comment that a 16-month timetable for withdrawing from Iraq could be good -- adding that it would have to be based on conditions on the ground -- was a sign that "there has been some convergence around proposals that we've been making for a year and a half" on this and issues like increasing troop levels in Afghanistan and negotiating directly with Iran, Obama said.

"The fact that John McCain now thinks that it's possible for us to execute a phased withdrawal -- I think that's a positive thing," he said. "And if the Administration believes that as well, then I will, I will be fully supportive."

Obama held the press conference after meeting with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and told reporters they had discussed the importance of cooperation between the United States and its European allies on a wide range of issues, including the Middle East peace process, climate change, international terrorism, and issues surrounding financial markets. Obama also said he thanked Brown for his country's help in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Obama talks about Landstuhl decision
In addition, Obama talked with reporters for the first time about his decision to cancel a planned visit to Landstuhl in Germany. "We had scheduled to go. We had no problem at all in leaving press -- we always leave press and staff out, that's why we left it off the schedule," he said, explaining that the campaign had planned to treat the trip the same way they treated a recent visit to Walter Reed, which the senator made without press.

Obama added, "I was going to be accompanied by one of my advisers, a former military officer. And we got notice that he would be treated as a campaign person and it would therefore be perceived as political, because he had endorsed my candidacy but he wasn't on the Senate staff," Obama said, referring to Gen. Scott Gration, who had worked to organize the trip.

"That triggered then a concern that maybe our visit was going to be perceived as political, and the last thing that I want to do is have injured soldiers and the staff at these wonderful institutions having to sort through whether this is political or not or get caught in the crossfire between campaigns. So rather than go forward and potentially get caught up in what might have been seen as a political controversy of some sort, what we decided was that we would not make a visit and instead I would call some of the troops who were there. So that's essentially the extent of the story."

The press conference marked the last public event of a whirlwind tour that was aimed at burnishing the first-term senator's foreign policy credentials.

When asked to evaluate the potential political benefits of the trip, Obama suggested he might be punished for spending a week abroad rather than focusing on bread and butter issues at home.

"I'm not sure that there is gonna be some immediate political impact," he said. "I wouldn't even be surprised if that in some polls that you saw a little bit of a dip as a consequence. We've been out of the country for a week. People are worried about gas prices, they're worried about home foreclosures."

There was one interesting moment when Obama was asked what he would ask Britain and France to contribute to the effort in Afghanistan, if elected. His response suggested he was already commander-in-chief, with the ability to send more troops.

"I have already committed an increase in American troops in Afghanistan," he said. "Obviously we'd like some of that burden shared. I think it's going to be necessary in order for us to complete the job that needs to be done."

It is not hard for me to understand Senator McCain's argument at all.  He knows if he had shown up at that spot in Germany to make that speech, he would have been speaking to the pigeons.  No one else would have shown up.
Why do I hear that cackling voice of George Bush in the background of the Pentagon's answer? They are his toadies, you know.

=============

You shouldn't fret. Liberals hear voices in their heads all the time.
Just add a "to".  "I have committed to an increase in ..."  Why are you trying to stir trouble?  I know what he meant and I wish to heaven he was our President right now.  Anyone who truly cares about the state of this nation should be wanting the type of change and leadership Senator Obama offers.

Obama 08
McCain's jealous ranting against Obama is simply childish.
MR MC CAIN IS A CONSTANT COMPLAINER ABOUT EVERYTHING. THE FACT THAT OBAMA DID WHAT MC CAIN SAID WOULD BE GOOD FOR HIM TO SEE NOW HE IS COMPLAINING THAT OBAMA DOESNT UNDERSTAND IRAQ. WELL THE FLIP FLOPER IS NOW TALKING ABOUT SOME KIND OF TIME TABLE. WHICH IS IT MC CAIN WAS OBAMA RIGHT ABOUT A TIME TABLE OR NOT, YOU SURE HAVE MADE STATEMENTS ABOUT TIME TABLES.

OBAMA MADE THE SAME KIND OF TRIPS OUT OF THE COUNTRY THAT YOU MADE, BUT FOR SOME REASON HE WAS ACTING TO PRESIDENTIAL. WELL WHAT AND HOW DID YOU ACT WHEN YOU WENT TO ALL THOSE COUNTRIES AND MADE MAJOR SPEECHES IN MOST OF THEM. ITS OK FOR YOU AND NOT OBAMA? BY THE WAY YOU HAD PLENTY OF COVERAGE IN THE PRESS ABOUT YOUR TRIPS. BUT AGAIN OBAMA IS WRONG AND ACTED TO PRESIDENTIAL. WHICH IS IT MC CAIN YOU CAN DO IT BUT OBAMA CANT.

IS THE PROBLEM HE WAS EXCEPTED AND ACTED AT EASE ON HIS TRIPS AND DIDNT MAKE STUPID OLD MAN MISTAKES LIKE YOU DID? YOU HAVE FLIP FLOPED MORE THAN ANY OTHER CANIDATE IN MY MEMORY. YOU DONT KNOW THE DIFFERENCES IN WHERE A COUNTRY IS LOCATED WHOS FALT IS THAT? ITS TOTALY YOUR SIR.

YOU SAY THE SERGE IS WORKING BUT THE YEAR BEFORE THE GOVENMENT WAS PAYING PEOPLE OF IRAQ TO FIGHT THE ENEMY AND YOU WERE PUSHING FOR THE SERGE, BUT IT STARTED TO WORK BEFOR YOUR SERGE WAS EVEN VOTED ON. SO WHICH IS IT MC CAIN YOU ARE RIGHT AS USUAL INSTEAD OF EXCEPTING THE FACT THAT OBAMA CAUGHT YOU ON ANOTHER MISTAKE YOU MADE?

YOU WANT THE PRESS TO FOLLOW YOU AND THEY ARE AND THEY FOLLOW OBAMA. SO WHATS THE PROBLEM? YOU SIR WONT ONLY THE PRESS TO NOT REPORT ALL THE MISTAKES YOU HAVE MADE SO FAR FROM LOCATIONS OF COUNTRIES AND ALL THE FLIP FLOPS YOU HAVE MADE I GUESS THATS OBAMAS FALT THE PRESS ISNT REPORTING THE SAME OLD CRAP THAT YOU SPIT OUT OF YOUR MOUTH.

SORRY JOHN MC CAIN THIS IS ONE REPUBLICAN FOR OVER 29 YEARR WHO IS SWITCH BECAUSE IM TIRED OF A PARTY OF THE RICH AND THE REST BE DAMNED.
What McCain has done since Obama's travels has been scandalous...he has demonstrated that he is willing to do anything to win...and he's learned the wrong lessons from his failed '00 candidacy... http://www.enewsreference.wordpress.com
Obama didn't go see the wounded military personel because he couldn't get the photo-op he wanted, and the military prohibits. Wounded soldiers are not props to be used for your benefit Mr. Obama. Pretty digusting behavior on his part. This entire trip for him is one big photo-op. Thats all Obama knows how to do well. With everything, he's a complete moron.
America needs Obama and everyone knows it.  This trip was an awesome thing for Mr. Obama and his campaign. I think when the new polls start coming out next week yo will see a masive surge for him.

Good job sir, our next future president Mr. Obama
McCain has become a grumpy old jerk, that is what he accomplished this week.  He took a false, but decent depiction of a "maverick" and turned himself into an old man standing on his front porch yelling at the kids to "get off my lawn."  It's actually kind of sad.  I don't know who is advising him, but if it is people like John Bolton then if he manages to win we are all in trouble.
eNews Reference: What McCain has done since Obama's travels has been scandalous.

Making up a lot ground in the polls is scandalous?
Let me get this straight. McCain was campaigning for the presidency in America whils Obama was on vacation overseas, refusing to see the U.S. troops while he met with foreign dignitaries and worked out in various gyms. More theater than you can stand.
IT seems as if Senator McCain called a bluff but wasn't prepared to see not only Senator Obama meet the bluff, but make it blow up in McCain's face.  Obama went to
Iraq - President Al Maliki praised his timetable of 16 months in withdrawing US troops. Maliki seemed geuninely impressed with Obama.
Gen. Patreaus was seen, in pictures, smiling with Obama both as he greeted him and then when the took a helicopter tour.
Afghanistan - President Hamid Karzai greeted him warmly.
Jordan - King Abdullah was so impressed that he personally drove Obama to the airport and then still chatted up another 20 minutes next to the plane.
Israel - President Shimon Peres had nothing for praise for him, along with the rest of the Israeli leaders whom Obama met.
Palestine - President Mahmoud Abbas greeted him warmly and thought their time together was productive. Even some Israelis thought it was a good idea for Obama to get both sides positions and perspectives, a difference noted by a key Israeli leader.
Germany - Chancellor Angela Merkel seemed geniunely accepting of Obama, going perhaps a little too far in saying he is PHYSICALLY, mentally, and something else fit.  I mean really, physically fit?  Did they have too private a session?  Okay, I digress.  But there's no mistaking the fact that 200,000 Germans showed up to hear this man speak, waviing US flags as opposed to burning them and making a mockery of the US.
France - President Nicoals Sarkozy calls Obama "his buddy."  If you saw any of the pictures, dude was totally impressed.
Great Britain - Meets with Prime Minister Gordon Brown who again receives him warmly.

For McCain, and then all of the people who say he's "cocky" or "arrogant" or "presumptuous" or whatever other word, Obama is flat out showing you that he's got juice with thw world. Now if you want to believe that we can do EVERYTHING here in the US and we don't need any help internationnaly, then
1) let all of those countries take their troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan (but remember that President Bush has been asking people to keep their troops there or even send more troops to no avail)
2) we don't need NAFTA as we can just trade with ourselves (even though McCain just 6 or 8 weeks ago went to Canada to make a speech extolling the virtues of free trade)
3) China holds a LOT of our debt (and if you don't want them calling in all of their notes, we've got to have some standing in the world)

Obama has a big picture personality while his campaign works on the small points to ensure a smooth seemless operation.  That's why you didn't have Obama in front of cameras or anywhere else making mistakes like McCain did in saying "Iraq was the first major conflict post 9/11."  If I remember corectly, we went to war in Afghanistan to counter the attack that was made against us on 9/11. That's why Obama continues to do well in the polls and in his leadership team while McCain has had two shakeups.

Look, if you're making $250 or $300,000 or more, I don't blame you for looking warily at Obama. He's promised to raise your taxes. If you make under $250, taxes will be the same or less.  But know that many billionaires, including the richest man in the US, Warren Buffett, likes Obama's ideas.  I aspire to move towards that financial goal so I'm going to at least look at what he's saying.  But for anyone to say that Obama was wrong in taking the trip, especially McCain, well, they're just flat out wrong. And especially McCain as he took THREE international trips in the last month. I think the criticism from McCain, like former President Bush said on 7/21 or 22 is that there's a little jealousy.  Get over it J-Mac, you called the bluff and Obama answered - BIG TIME.
JOE GLAYTON GEORGIA (Sent Saturday, July 26, 2008 10:35 AM)

JOE:

You know you have something there. It seems that McCain, like Hillary, spent/spend the majority of their campaigns complaining and criticizing. Whereas Obama, although did/does respond to criticisms from both, he generally talks about the issues from his vantage point (not that of McCains), has an upbeat message, and tries to give people a ray of hope  about the future. People may not like Obama's proposals or as some might say even a lack thereof, but the fact is we either elect someone who is at least upbeat and can incite others or we elect a person who is always complaining and who seems to have a cloud of gloom and doom hanging over their head. Frankly I am tired of the sourpuss, gloom and doom attitude that GWB and that John McCain exude from most every pore in their bodies. I think the world is tired of it as well and I hope the Amercian citizens are tired of it.
Why is it that everything that Obama does is put undr so much scrutiny...The MSM are always looking for the things he does wrong and put a spotlight on it but McFossil gets away with the most un-intelligent blunders week in and week out, it seems as though we are hunting for the things that Mcblunder are doing right and we cant find them and the MSM is ok with that.....

Barack is a movement and you cant stop a movement.... no matter if you like it or not he got 200000 people to come hear him speak in Germany, 100000 people to show up for a rally here in the US...and has requested a football stadium for the Convention...if he is only up 4-6 points why arent the same amount of people showing up to McFossil's rallies(townhalls)???and dont try the reublicans have jobs bull crap.... Just join the movement now, he has been right on just about all the things the repugs have been arguing with him about
OBAMA 08 & 12
So...what is good for the goose(McCain) is NOT good for the gander(Obama). Go figure!  The Double Standard Express is off and running..! For any conscious and objective person to not see this is hard to believe. This is NOT the John McCain of old. He has become an everyday...campaign-bot...programmed with whatever Rovian software they can cram into him.
John McCain is the last person who is in a position to criticize any candidate's commitment to the troops.  He has voted against funding for our vets year after year, vote after vote.

He opposed the new GI bill Webb and Hagel worked so hard to get passed until it became clear it was going to pass with overwhelming veto proof support.   His excuse was it was too expensive, though he obviously felt no expense was too great to keep huge cuts for the rich, and that we should limit our vets options to  pressure more of them to re-up Great way to support our vets! Of course after he changed his mind he actually had the gall to take credit for the bill and GW had the gall to thank him and ignore Webb at the signing.

When questioned about his consistent votes against vets by a leader of a vets organization here in Denver he refused to answer and just said the guy didn't know what he was talking about and of course he supports vets, as if that has to be accepted as a given because of his personal history no matter how many times he votes AGAINST vets.

The man is a hypocrite and DOES NOT SUPPORT VETS in any concrete way.  He just uses them.
Obama is running around saying he's going to end the war in Iraq. Guess what? The person that's ending that war is President Bush. Don't think so? Then ask some of the terrorists in the world if they think the US hasn't won the war. Oops, you can't. They're all dead.
with this trip obama has cross the hurdle of world leader test and when he gets back states side he should sing the economy is bad song and mccain know little about it. All the democratic should mention that in their talking points everyday. Say i and apologize for saying so often... thats what the republican did with kerry's i voted for the war before i voted against it.

Obama shold also stop making mccain set thetime line and measure for the surge.... he should call mccain on the surge before the surge gaffe and remind people one important thing.... if we had to invade iraq again would mccain support the decision... frame it in that way.... everyday.
I have come to the conclusion that McCain lives in the past and only knows how to complain.  Does he think the world should revolve around him and him alone.  He complains because Obama had not traveled to other countries and now he complains because he did travel.  By the way, McCain has gone to other countries and made speeches.  Maybe he is jealous because he can't get people to come and hear him speak. If this country is to move forward, we better hope McCain isn't sitting in the oval office.  If he is, look out Iran!!
Senator McCain sounds like a spoiled child who has not gotten enough attention so he throws a tantrum. He looked foolish in front of the cheese case in a supermarket Compare that image to Senator Obama in Germany. Who looked more Presidential?
McOld met with "The Dalai Lama" and slapped 2 Billion Chinese in the face...as well as, the evangelicals in this country...
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,381522,00.html
This guy is a loser...The world according to McCain is so convoluted. He can't be paying for this advice..where and when will he appear to be a leader and not a follower of last minute decisions...
The GOP is not only stuck between a rock and a hard place they have this guy digging a hole to pull the rocks in on top of them....It's almost Biblical..
Rev. 6:15-16....
We truly are 'junkies',...I've been on for an hour hoping for a new story.

Way to hit back, Obama.  Gently and succinctly.  Yes, the double speak express has co-opted onto Obama's talking points.  Way to call him on it.

I have not done the research; but it appears that the Obama campaign has funded this entire trip abroad.  It is my understanding that the photos with military in Afghanistan and Iraq are exclusive to Centcom and all other interviews are compliments of the traveling press corps, who were invited along.

I am proud of my candidate and cannot wait for him to get back and set the record straight domestically.  I think McCain has become like a gnat, just an irritating monotonous buzz that has no significance in the grand scheme of things.

He looked and acted like the immature fool he is this week trying to piggy back onto Obama's foreign success instead of focusing on his own 'plan'.  I get that he doesn't have one; but that was made glaringly obvious when he had lunch at the sausage house in front of 20 patrons, the same day Obama gave a speech in Berlin in front of 200,000.  These differences are SO blindingly stark, I can't imagine anyone drinking Republican Kool Aid this year.

I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE DEBATES.
JOHN MCCAIN HAS BEEN OVERSEAS 17 TIMES AT THE TAXPAYEERS, YES YOUR AND MINE EXPENSE.  HOWEVER THE MEDIA IS NOT TALKING ABOUT THAT. HE ALSO HAD A FUNDRAISERE IN LONDON, STIL SAYING THE TRIPS WERE NOT POLITICAL............WHAT A HYPROCRIT!

Kelly O'Donnell highlighted McCain's overseas trip "to pump his international image," ignored misstatements, FUNDRAISER..............SEN. OBAMA DID NOT HOLD A FUNDRAISER BUT WE AREN'T HEARING ANYTING ABOUT THAT...............WHY WOULD JOHN GO OVERSEAS TO ASK FOREIGNERS FOR MONEY..........LET'S TAK ABOUT THAT

MEDIA UNCRITICALLY REPORT MCCAIN'S CLAIM THAT OVERESEAS TRIP IS NOT CAMPAIGN RELATED, IFNORING LONDON FUNDRAISER

Summary: The Wall Street Journal, the Associated Press, and Reuters reported Sen. John McCain's claim that his trip overseas is UNRELEATED to his presidential campaign WITHOUT NOTING noting that MC CAIN'S TRIP INCLUDES A FUNDRAISER in LONDON OR THAT MCCAIN CAMPAIGN R EPRESENTATIVES HAVE REPORTEDLY acknowledged the POLITICAL STRAGETY BEHIND THE TRIP.

CNN's Situation Room misinformed on McCain's overseas trip
Summary: CNN's Dana Bash UNCRITICALLY REPORTED the assertion by Sen. John McCain's campaign that he simply "MISSPOKE" when he falsely claimed Iranian operatives are training members of Al Qaeda. In fact, McCain has made that error more than once. Also, Wolf Blitzer adopted the McCain campaign talking point that McCain -- in Blitzer's words -- "usually takes pride in" his "straight talk," despite McCain's repeated falsehoods and his stark inconsistencies on numerous issues.

Senator John McCain has been averaging a fund-raiser a day in America's pockets of affluence - hotel ballrooms in New York, Atlanta, Chicago - but now he will expand his pursuit of campaign donations at a $1,000-A-PLATE LUNCH AT THE 18th CENTURY SPENCER HOUSE IN LONDON.

The transatlantic FUND RAISER, to be held MARCH 20 at the HOME BUILT BY THE FIRST EARL SPENCER, AN ANCESTOR OF DIANA, THE LATE PRINCESS OF WALES AND, comes at the end of a foreign trip that MR. MCCAIN, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, has REPEATEDLY SAID IS NOT POLITICAL...........

Mr. McCain is to travel to LONDON, PARIS AND THE MIDDLE EAST Next week with Senator Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina Republican, and Senator Joseph I. Lieberman, the Connecticut independent.

200000 people in TierGarten ...Let's see
How many would McCain get to show at his TierGarten speech?.... Maybe about???? 200 skin heads and 25
GOP tourists...
No wonder McCain feels a little humbled for the first time in his life...He can't deal with it...these are feelings that bring out that critical eye and the  "But I" retorts..everyone is laughing at him not with him...
Hey Jerry, Corpus Christi -  Your boy has flip flopped again. After a relentless critisism of O'bama, he is now basically agreeing with his plan to end this stupid war. If O'bama had done that you would have been posting forever about some kind of liberal disase or something equally stupid. What have you to say now? Maybe you can spin it some other way to make it look like O'bama made the flip flop. All who post here are awaiting your reply to defend McCan't about this flip flop. Tell us how standing in front of the cheese isle at a supermarket makes him look presidential why don't ya. McSame is dazed and confused, and unfit to be potus.
It's true. McCain has abandoned everything that made him different from the rest of the republicans. He might as well be Mitt Romney. His new slogan will be Yes we will.
Add immaturity and jealousy to all of McCain's other psychological (geriatric) problems and you have a catastrophe waiting to happen. My best guess is it will happen shortly after he has to deal with Obama in the first debate.

Conseratives are walking examples of narcissism gone bad.
Tim Russert is really missed.  His unbias reporting would be greatly appreciated right now.  Even Chuck Todd is becoming bias toward the McCain campaign.  Joe S. in Morning Joe made a comment about the fuss with the Katie Couric interview.  He missed the point it's not about John McCain forgetting about the dates of the "Surge" and Anbar Awakening" but it was about the network substituting another answer to cover for McCain.  TIM RUSSERT WOULD HAVE HIT IT ON THE NAIL.  It is not about the inconsistances that McCain cannot avoid, it is CBS covering his mistakes.  They are not doing the American people any favors.  I have removed that station from my my viewing schedule.  Tim, (RIP), you left your commrades at a very difficult time, and they seem to be forgetting what you stood for.
"His response suggested he was already commander-in-chief, with the ability to send more troops."

----------------------------------------------------

What the hell kind of statement is that?  He stated his plan if he's elected...where the hell do you get off claiming that he thinks he's CIC?
The press, news media and pundits, etc. needs to back off a whole lot.  Every time Obama makes a statement it is completely blown out of proportion. We the public understands exactly what he's attempting to say. He not only went on this trip to show the american people that he is ready to take command but to show the whole world. "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED."  John Mccain and his cohorts don't need to wait until November to experience defeat, they have already lost.
John McCain, POW & US Senator for over 25 years.

Was it always Senator McCain's intention, after his loss in 2000, to run for President in 2008?

I think about John McCain having birthday cake with GWB during Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

I think about the story Dana Priest uncovered about Walter Reed.

I think about how John McCain had serious issues with the USA invading Iraq initially, but he voted for it anyway. Did he not realize the consequences?

What convinced him to change his mind and that yes, Iraq was the place to go afterall instead of using all of our available resources to hunt down Osama Bin Laden?

I think of over the 4,000 American casualties in Iraq.

I think of the many thousands of Iraqi civilian deaths (of which he never speaks of).

He speaks only in very simple sentences. The surge worked and victory. There are no winners when the USA invades another country. Doesn't he know this?

I think about Jim Webb's GI Bill and how Senator McCain didn't want to support it because it may induce our troops to leave the military to get an education. Yet he shamlessly took credit for the passage of the Bill.

I think about the scars (both physical & emotional) our vets are going to have to live with for the rest of their lives because our government turned their backs on them.

I think about the failing grade Senator McCain received from our vets when it came to his support of the military.

I think of how could he possibly care about the future for the citizens of Iraq when he doesn't appear to give a damn about our own citizens.

I think about how he said that unlike Michelle Obama, he & HIS wife have always been proud to be American citizens. Of course, that's always easy to say when you inherit a great deal of money.

I think about how Senator McCain can't possibly get any lower in his treatment of Senator Obama, but he continues to do so, every hour of every single day.

Senator McCain reminds me of all those conservative white haired old bankers & CEO's we used to see in the old movies, sitting around a large table in their penthouse offices, so out of touch & nasty to anyone who wasn't one of them.

I think about that bombed out church that is still standing in Berlin as a reminder to the German people of how devastating war can be. How ironic.

Why in the world would anyone believe that Senator McCain cares about anything other than his own political future? He's just like what we have in the White House this very moment.

The more I learn about him and listen to him, the more I realize that I have no evidence that proves otherwise.

San Francisco: What's the typical life expectancy of a man McCain's age, and how would it be affected by the abuse he suffered as a POW? What's the likelihood of Alzheimer's disease or other mental decline? At 72, McCain would be the oldest person to ever become president. Reagan's mental health declined in his second term.

Dr. David Katz: Average life span for men in the U.S. is roughly 75. The fact that Senator McCain is a senator, has money, influence, and privilege; a family; excellent medical care -- all mitigate in his favor. These are factors that would, all things being equal, tend to extend his life expectancy. His past traumas, and the melanoma, would mitigate the other way -- lowering his life expectancy.

Isn't ANYONE worried about this man being in a position to make decisions 3 or 4 years from now when he will be 75 or 76?

How will re react under pressure?
When things aren't going his way?
When he is being challenged mentally and physically?

These aren't insults, these are valid concerns that every American should have.
Don't we have enough problems without compounding them by electing a man who can't accept the fact that we all get older and life gets a bit more difficult?

Every voter needs to remember that McCain will have four years do attempt to undue all the damage Bush has done.  He won't be getting any younger.
Obama pretty much slammed McCain on every negative and deragatory point he's made this week.  Even included the fact that McCain flip-flopped on troop withdrawlas on Iran.  McCain has now effectively co-opted every major Obama position on the wars in Iraq and Afghanastan.  Seems, the "naive", inexperienced junior Sentor from Illinois was right all along.  Love to see the spin on how McCain magically came to the same positions Obama held for 2 years and made them his own.

As regards to the hospital visit in Germany,"I was going to be accompanied by one of my advisers, a former military officer. And we got notice that he would be treated as a campaign person and it would therefore be perceived as political, because he had endorsed my candidacy but he wasn't on the Senate staff," Obama said, referring to Gen. Scott Gration, who had worked to organize the trip.

A former Lt. General in ther US Army was being denied access to a military hospital to see wounded heroes.  A retired Lt.General.

Does this mean if General David H. Petraeus, had accompanied Obama he could not seem him as he is not a member of the Senators staff? Absurd!

Someone should ask the military arm of the Bush poitical campaign, the Pentagon, if a Petraeus visit would be allowed.  Some one should ask why the militaryt is being used in such a shameful way.  Someone should make Bush accountable for these obscene acts of parisanship that has made us the laughing stock of the worls and his presidency irrelevent.
Friday morning Andrea Mitchell was reporting 'rumours' of McCain interference via the Pentagon in Obama's visit to Landstuhl.
"burnishing the first-term senator's foreign policy credentials"

Who was the first to use this phrase? It has been much abused this week.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
The attempts by the McCain campaign to exploit Senator Obama's decision about visiting the military hospital is despicable. What are they implying?

Why would Senator Obama announce the trip if he didn't intend to go?

Why would he cancel the trip if the Pentagon told his campaign what they are telling the press now?

What could the Obama campaign possibly gain from the way things have turned out?

At best it was an unfortunate miscommunication, at worst it was an attempt by the Bush/McCain team to sabotage Senator Obama.

In either case, it is NOT something that should be political fodder, just like Senator Obama's prayer from the wall in Israel should not have been.

For all the talk of "honor" from the McCain campaign, their behavior this week has clearly demonstrated that they have none.
The Uberallis-Amerikans of the neo-con, unregulated markets vision of social darwinism see beyond Obama to those whose angst spur and inspire the high floating rhetoric that issues from Barack's lips. Rhetoric that the apologists for catastrophes and dislocations could not conceive, let alone think as irresistably necessary.

Barack's visit is the representation for those of us who may never see the shores on that side of the ocean, but whohave an economic and political consciousness with their dissatisfaction with the artificial walls that the ruling classes' mindset has driven us to the brink of too many social and political stress points.

Barack may not be the unniversal instant or long term, political gratification, but he is in his lingusitics a new page from the apologetics and dissembling of the recent past.
McCain is another Bush:  So all his rantings are to be expected. I just pray, wish, hope, and all you can think of that on Election night Senator Obama will be the President-Elect.
McCain has a long history of vindictive behavior, especially against women. His wretched behavior blocking Obama's visit to the wounded troops was vile, detestable, and shamless. I think all of his carping, sniping, and slanderous vitriol against Senator Obama because his trip has been such a huge success, will backfire, just like it did with Hillary.

Lastly,I understand the statement, "I have already commited an increase in American troops in Afghanistan", as qualified, if, he were to be elected to CIC.

Obviously Barack isn't taking anything for granted. He is working much too hard. A candidate full of assumptions, and a sense of entitlement does not put forth the intensity of effort that the Obama campaign has demonstrated for a year, and a half. A lesson we not so long ago learned in the primaries.

For a supposedly "tough guy war hero" mccain sure does whine and cry like a little girl (no offense intended to little girls!).
Full Moon
Get your head out of the clouds and do your research before you post.  That is not the reason Sen. Obama did not see the troops.  The Pentagon-Bushwacked-the whole idea.
McCain said I'm the one who knows how to win a War
John we lost your War . I would suggest that having
experienced a president who finished in the lower third of his graduating class would make it less likely we would elect someone who finished damn near last at the Academy. Electing someone who seems to
constantly having senior moments and who would be 77
at the end of his term , not a good idea. The next president is in for a long night and must bring
people who are comitted to the nation in to the White House to advise etc. McCains present group of advisors
are questionable at best . Last the next President will
be working with a much larger Democratic Majority in
both the House and Senate ( Thank's George ) John would be unable to govern . Obama is the only choice
What I found absolutely amazing is that Barack Obama was very welcomed into the international community.  Not many negative responses!  This tells me something; is the problem with Barack being a presidential nominee an issue with just Americans or people abroad?  It appears to be more of a controversy with the local people.  Another issue that doesn't say much for America and Americans!  In fact, I wonder if America has become a somewhat contribution to many of the global social issues we DO experience across many nations???  It seems as though the world is more receptive to a black American President than the people of America!!!  What is wrong with this picture????
JUST SAY NO TO REPUBLICANS (ALL REPUBLICANS) IN NOVEMBER.
OBAMA 08
Even Daddy Bush had enough sense to give credit where is was do when asked how he felt about Mr. Obama's speechs in Europe.  "JEALOUSY".
Instead of Mr. McCain using the time he had while Mr. Obama was out of the country to talk to us about his plans of steering the economics of this country back to life, all he and his advisors could came up with was how inexperienced and still naive Mr. Obama was.
Even to the point of making fun of the millions of people around the world who came in droves to hear a man talk to them not at them about coming together to make our world one that is safer and more prosperous.
Keep talking Mr. McCain, continue to let me and others see just how your brain works.
The McCain camp did just as much traveling than Barack.  Difference is, who cared?  I would imagine that people perceived McCain as the "Bush as usual" and didn't want to waste their time listening to a carbon copy.  However, Barack made good of his visits and, McCain could not compete with that.  No need to get sore about it!  Wow, I thought the sore losers were behind us when Hillary left the race!  I will imagine that the real, short tempered, arrogant John McCain that some of us know will surface before November!
John McCain is simply jealous of Obama.  In Maine, Bush 41 had the honesty to admit that he was jealous of the reception Obama received in Germany.  Kelly O'Donnell asked him (Bush 41) a question that begged for a criticism of Obama, but Bush 41 surprised her by telling the truth--he said he was jealous of Obama!  And McCain is jealous, too--what politician, all of whom hav elarger-than-normal egos, wouldn't be?  The media have been so gentle with McCain, as if he is their grandfather.  "Ah, that's just gramps forgetting that there is not Iraq-Pakistan border, that's just good ole gramps forgetting that the Awakening came months before the surge, no big deal..."  He has made a plethora of mistakes, but has not been called to task for it by the press.  CBS even covered for him by editing the tape.  It is almost as if because of his age, the media are afriad to be tough on him.  McCain looks less like a "maverick" or "warrior" than he does an often-confused and cantankerous septuagenarian, which in fact is what he is.  McCain's envy, his jealousy of Obama brought out his infamous temper this week and revealed his mean, cruel streak.  McCain is a military man who is reliving the Viet Nam war through the Iraq war hoping for a different conclusion.  Also, McCain--like Bush and his oilman pals--wants to keep us in Iraq for the very reason they invaded in the first place--access to the oilfields.  That is why McCain wants a 50-to-100-year occupation.  The Iraq war is over--we are now an occupying military force.  Eisenhower knew the cost of war and warned against our becoming an "industrial military complex;"  McCain is the opposite--he would keep us engaged in war.  My fear is that he would do with Iran what Bush did with Iraq--provoke Iran in order to create a reason to keep our military engaged in a mid-east war.
