Veepstakes: What Obama wants

Posted: Monday, July 28, 2008 9:13 AM by Domenico Montanaro

On Meet the Press yesterday, Obama said this about selecting his VP: “I'm going to want somebody with integrity; I'm going to want somebody with independence, who's willing to tell me where he thinks or she thinks I'm wrong; and I'm, I'm going to want somebody who shares a vision of the country where we need to go, that we've got to fundamentally change not only our policies, but how our politics works, how business is done in Washington.

VIDEO: Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama discusses what he's looking for in a running mate with NBC's Tom Brokaw of "Meet the Press."

More: “I think the most important thing from my perspective is somebody who can help me govern.  I want somebody who I'm compatible with, who I can work with, who has a shared vision, who certainly complements me in the sense that they provide a knowledge base or an area of, of expertise that can be useful. Because we're going to have a lot of problems and a lot of work to do, and I'm not interested in a vice president who I just send off to go to funerals. I want somebody who's going to be able to roll up their sleeves and really do some work.”

On Hillary Clinton, he repeated this line: I think Hillary Clinton would be on anybody's short list.  She, she is one of the most effective, intelligent, courageous leaders that we have in the Democratic Party.”

But the New York Sun doesn't miss these very intriguing comments Obama made about his VP -- and how they may have eliminated Clinton from contention.

Go back and read Obama's words carefully. Did he also eliminate Bayh and Biden, too?

Would Dems really tolerate a Bush cabinet member as Obama's running mate? Ann Veneman is reportedly being floated.

The Boston Globe has a front-page story on Pawlenty. "The rapport between the two men, evident throughout long days on the campaign trail, now is being cited as one of the main reasons that Pawlenty has risen in speculation as McCain's possible running mate. ... If McCain is looking for a close friend whose loyalty is beyond question, Pawlenty could be his vice presidential pick, political observers said. Pawlenty might also help McCain win Minnesota, where a recent poll showed the race is statistically tied."

The Boston Globe reports on the Kaine buzz.

More from NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli…
The Wall Street Journal says both candidates have narrowed their choices, and Obama reviewed information on prospects before leaving for overseas. No surprise names on either list.

REPUBLICANS: McCain said on This Week that his goal for the vice presidential selection is “the best team we can provide the United States of America in very difficult times.” He said they are “still in the process.”

Speculation that McCain could announce his choice Monday, after meeting with his inner circle this weekend in Sedona. And Pawlenty cleared his schedule for the weekend.

American Spectator's Philip Klein calls Romney “political suicide.”

John Thune also said he hasn’t turned over personal information. He said on “Fox News Sunday” “you don’t rule anything out in this profession. But it’s certainly not anything I aspire to.”

DEMOCRATS: Chuck Hagel on “Face the Nation”: "I am not interested. I fully expect to be a private citizen next year and get a real job. I fully expect that Barack Obama will choose somebody in his own party.” Hagel called McCain’s most recent ad “completely distorted” on “Face the Nation.” Hagel said Obama made the right call to not to visit U.S. troops at a military hospital in Germany after the congressional delegation ended, adding it would have been “using our wounded men and women as props for his campaign.”

The hometown paper looks at the pluses and minuses of Evan Bayh. “Despite his resume, Bayh hasn't built a substantial public policy legacy. Opponents could paint Obama and Bayh as a ticket that looks and sounds great but hasn't done much.”

Despite his denials, the Providence Journal finds many who think Jack Reed is an attractive VP candidate.

The NYT has no right to claim anything other then they are fully in support of Obamas campaing. they are nto a unbised news papper. when their editorial board rejects a editorial from McCain after running one by Obama, and have the gaul to say they would have run it if it was more like Obama's Please
Really, I wonder if Obama and I are twins reared apart (OK, I am two years older, white and female, but I think I could make a basket or two.) Because, he reiterated exactly what I have been saying about a VP choice. He should pick someone with whom he has good personal chemistry, who will challenge him but not create a separate zone of power in the administration.
So at least there is one GOP Senator who tells the truth about the "wounded soldier issue". Thanks Senator Hagel you are obviously a stand up guy. Bravo!

I do not think Barack's answer on MTP yesterday rules out Biden. According to Mathews from last week, Barack feels very good about Biden for VP. We will see but that ticket would be awesome as Biden is smart, expereinced and not afraid to tell truth to power!

We're happy voters and we approve this message..

Is NBC now 24/7 Obama? How they going to get this guys mug on the tube when the Olympics are on?
I'm not sure Kaine helps Obama in Virginia. Doesn't really hurt him, but doesn't help. Here, I think Kaine is just seen as the guy who got elected because he followed Warner. Not that Kaine isn't doing a good job as governor, and maybe anyone would pale in comparison to a guy who really did work across party lines to at least partially fix some real budget problems.

I do think Bayh makes Indiana plausible.

Obama of course needs to think about who he wants in the administration rather than just who helps him get there.
I read Senator Obama's words carefully the first time. I don't see how they eliminate Senator Biden. Hagel yes, but not Biden. Actually I would think his words point the way to Biden.

Barack-o-Biden '08/'12
yes i saw meet the press and obama told his that when obama knows who his VP will be then the press will know second!! but no this goof asked not once but twice!!! i miss tim russert!!! the interview was long on one subject, and short on others!! all he wanted to talk about was the surge and iraq, and the new york times!!! tim would have covered more subjects as will as giving the quest ample time to respond to the attacks from the other candiate!!!
for the next television season the must find a real replacement.
Whoever's on McCain's ticket is taking a ride on the Titantic...first/last voyage, Romney or anyone else.  The problem is McCain himself and a disjointed GOP.  Senator Obama is the most inspiring candidate I've seen since Bobby Kennedy.  Great change only comes about through inspiration.  We seldom elect a president that doesn't have to face great challenges and seldom do any of them come to be considered great themselves.  I believe Obama may be one that will...he gets my vote this time, 4 years of sharp scrutiny.  But right now I've got hope.
I don't think the Obama answer rules out Joe Biden, at all.  I think Joe Biden fits all the criteria -- he has been a Senator for a long time, yes, but he has always spoken his mind (and sometimes mis-spoken it) with refreshing candor and bluntness that is rare in Washington.  In addition, he never turned into a greedy rich guy when he has had every opportunity to do so.  He has remained focused on his work in the Senate and taken it very seriously and been one of the best Senators for years.  He has also demonstrated amazing personal fortitude in his life, and is also strong on foreign policy experience.  BIDEN as a running mate guarantees Obama wins in Pennsylvania, and probably in Florida as well -- perhaps even Ohio and Michigan.  BIDEN will give older voters and Catholic voters a sense of security we need, we who are so uncomfortable with Obama's lack of experience in Washington.  Biden has the insider knowledge without ever becoming a "rich greedy" insider.  So since Obama is clearly not going to pick Senator Clinton, I BEG HIM TO PICK SENATOR BIDEN!
And a PS to my earlier post is that Biden has been CONSPICUOUSLY ABSENT FROM THE AIRWAVES LATELY, leading me to believe that he doesn't want to have to answer the question that's going to be asked about whether he wants the job, and whether he's being vetted.  GO JOE!  HE'S THE MAN FOR THE JOB.

Last Friday, I wrote on this very same blog explaining the two candidates' choices for a V.P. Again, I believe McCain will pick Tim Pawlenty because a)Mitt Romney looks more presidential than John McCain (he is taller, no offense to McCain); b) McCain does not want to compete with his running mate, but rather he wants a subordinate for a V.P.; and c) there's a reason Mitt Romney lost the party's nomination--Mormon and former governor of MA.

As for Obama's choice, I still think he's going to pick Mark Warner of Virginia. Yes, there's been a lot of speculation about Tim Kaine, but Mark Warner is more popular in the state than Kaine is, and his selection will throw most commentators off since Warner insists he's only interested in his sure-bet senate seat. That and if there's one thing I've learned about the Obama campaign this year, Obama's team always surprises and in a good way, too.
this just in mccain picks cheney for vp.
I hope McCain DOES pick Romney.

A Romney pick would be the end of it for McCain.  If McCain wants to win, he needs to pick an outside-the-box choice to try to counteract all of the excitement around Obama.

Picking Romney would do absolutely nothing to boost excitement about McCain's candidacy.

Just imagine:  it could be the "Two-old-white-guys campaign"
Carol's analysis is right on. Go Barack o Biden!!

We need strength of will, intelligence, and honesty on the ticket in both places.
