Veepstakes: Obama close to pick?

Posted: Monday, July 28, 2008 5:58 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Matthew Berger and Carrie Dann
THE SHORT LIST.
Obama traveled Monday afternoon to the Washington office of Eric Holder, his vice presidential search committee chair. Campaign manager David Plouffe also joined him Monday on the road, a rare occurrence.

Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine “has emerged as one of the campaign’s potential finalists” for vice president, Politico says.

VIDEO: Time is running low for Barack Obama and John McCain to pick their running mates. NBC's David Gregory and Chuck Todd weigh in on the possible short lists. Also interviewed is analyst Mike Murphy.

McCain told donors that choosing a veep is a “very tough decision” and said there were many “highly qualified people” to choose from, including party “stalwarts” to governors, senators and business people.

Terry McAuliffe told “Morning Joe” that Obama picking Hillary Clinton would create a “50-state sweep” for the Democrats.

A dark horse being talked about on the McCain side is Federal Express CEO Frederick Smith, Ambinder reports.

ON THE RECORD. McCain laid out his criteria for a veep to Bermuda donors via webcast: “You want to make sure you have a candidate that's not going to hurt the ticket,” he said. “The second thing is, and I think it's the key criteria, is it someone who shares your principles, your values, your philosophy and your priorities. The hardest thing for the president is to establish priorities and I'm -- I think we're blessed with having a wealth of candidates. But I haven't -- we really aren't mentioning names.”

NBC’s Andrea Mitchell reports that on a conference call following a meeting with Obama economic advisors, former Sen. Bill Bradley answered “no” when asked if he would be willing to serve on the ticket.

WHAT THEY’RE DOING. Kaine has a full schedule this week that will not take him to Washington, a spokesman said. More interestingly, he is scheduled to go on a Va. beach vacation with his family all next week.

Gov. Tim Pawlenty is scheduled to speak Wednesday morning in Chicago before the American Legislative Exchange Council. He also plans to campaign for McCain in Iowa on Saturday.

Former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney is expected to return from a vacation at Lake Winnipesaukee, N.H. next week and travel 8/7 to Beijing for the Olympic Opening Games, his spokesman said. He was CEO of the Winter Games in 2002.

Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius on Wednesday will meet with T. Boone Pickens and might also join him for a public event, but otherwise plans to stay busy in Kansas, her camp says. No political events of note, and her only out of state travel is non-political as well.

NM Gov. Bill Richardson is busy handling his state's flooding damage from the remnants of Hurricane Dolly. Per his office, "Governor Richardson is scheduled to tour the flooded areas by air and by land later this afternoon." He declared Lincoln County a disaster area earlier today.

Sen. Chris Dodd will lead a hearing tomorrow on the state of the insurance industry. (Dodd chairs the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs.)

Sebelius says she won't raise gasoline taxes to pay for a proposed transportation plan in home state Kansas.

Kaine appears tomorrow on a monthly radio program with fellow metro leaders DC Mayor Adrian Fenty and MD Gov. Martin O'Malley. (WTOP, 10am). Kaine is also catching flak from his state's Republican Party Chairman, who is demanding an investigation around what he believes to be a "coordinated and widespread effort in Virginia to commit voter fraud."

CHATTERING CLASS. Despite the clues from Obama’s “Meet the Press” interview, don’t rule out senators like Bayh, Biden and Dodd just yet, according to Chris Cillizza

Jim Geraghty offers the idea of McCain announcing his choice at the convention “with the entire political world waiting in breathless anticipation, and with all of the finalists in the convention arena, the curtain suddenly rises on...”

Perhaps Obama will let McCain have first shot, but then again, maybe not.

Since he did not break out with the Middle East/Euro trip (although it didn't hurt either) he is moving toward Hillary to close the deal.

Not my choice, but this is a knife-fight and as you know, there are no rules in a knife-fight.
I am excited to find out who Obama picks.  There are so many good candidates that will be a compliment to his intelligence.  I don't care who McCain picks, it won't change the fact that McCain himself is unqualified and lacks the intelligence and temperment to be president.
USATODAY/GALLUP: MCCAIN UP 4 AMONG LIKELY VOTERS  read it and weep wingnuts LMAO
"McCain laid out his criteria for a veep to Bermuda donors via webcast"

When did Bermuda become part of the United States? Why do Bermudians get to influence the choice our Vice President? Sounds unpatriotic and elitist.
It's Bill Richardson or Tim Kaine.  Take it to the bank
MSNBC you guys are saps!  The McCain camp is playing you.  How many times has this network played the "Obama doesn't have time for the troops" attack ad?  I woke up to it on Morning Joe and came home to it on Harball, I can only imagine how much play it got all day.  Incidentally, I mentioned in a previous post the "hubris" of the Morning Joe crew and it was at its most flagrant this morning.  Pat Buchanan smugly declared this attack was important because "they" were talking about it.  WTF?????  Not whether voters were responding, but because THEY the MJ crew thought it was worth talking about.  Proof positive that today's MSM doesn't print the story, they DRIVE it.  Anyways, back to the ad, in a campaign notable for its notable absence of smart moves this latest ad is brilliant!  Definitely not because of the content, but rather the way it was deployed.  Sen McCain's campaign only footed the bill to run this ad in a couple of markets, just enough to get it on the news and the pundiots (pundit + idiot) talking about it.  Now guess what, CNN is running it, MSNBC is running it, FOX probably made it the opening theme video for all of its programs and guess what, all of them are broadcasting across the country.  I've heard very few of the pundiots actually point out the inaccuracies of the ad or the repugnance of its message, they are all saying Sen Obama "has a problem because he has to explain".  Instead they spend 10-15 mins pontificating on the "merits" of Sen McCain's "accusations" and how its a smart political attack that has legs.  Oh its smart, but not for the reasons they think.  The suckers.
Senator McCain will lose in November, by a lot.  No one with an ounce of intelligence (i.e. McCain's equal) will want to be a part of a losing ticket.

Obama 08
msm is a joke.I lean mod. liberal, but David Greg. Race for the Whitehouse, is boring as watching paint dry.Hire Smerconish, even though he admits to being a Repug, he is fair and balanced. David is right wing and it shows. Also hire Bob Schrumm and fire Harold Ford. He is another boring employee, collects money, and says nothing!Bring aboard Jack Cafferty your ratings would go up>db
The only thing "OBAMA" should be doing is writing a check for the trip he had the tax payer just pay for. This running around the world to make your self look good is pure Bull sheit!! This trip was in the 10's of thousands, his Idea of leadership is Washington self serving paper hanging CRAP! Looking for a VP, The trip was self serving Media stunt! Just what are telephones for???? That trip was for the state department, This is more of how this derailed congress acts towards useless spending. """"NOTHING MORE THAN SELF SERVING, ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF STUPID MEETS THE FREE DOLLAR"""!!!!!!
I get that Terry McAuliffe is Hillary's biggest fan; but he and Lanny Davis just need to knock it the h*ll off.  I am fatigued from their rhetoric.  Hillary would DRIVE Independent voters away in the central Midwest (KS, NE, Dakotas, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho).  They really cannot stand her.  PUMA is starting to hold a similar meeting for me, at this point.  I can't believe how petty and immature they are acting.  The race was hers to lose, and she lost it.

I really believe Obama can capture the hearts of true, non racist Independents who are completely fed up with the direction this country is heading.

If I am wrong, I will indeed be sad on November 5th.  I gotta' tell you, it just doesn't feel wrong.
** “You want to make sure you have a candidate that's not going to hurt the ticket,” he said. **

What an inspiring and thoughtful leader!
So full of vision and optimism!

** How about so full of insecurity, too dangerous to be Commander in Chief? **
Terry McAuliffe et al keep touting Hillary, even Chris Mathews on hardball. You all seem to be flogging a dead horse. Hillary will be in the cabinet but not his running mate.  I cannot speak for Obama or his advisors but I can call it as I see it. For the nth time that combination WOULD BE DYSFUNCTIONAL So Terry with your ‘50 state sweep’ pie in the sky, this is not Hillary’s campaign whereby you ignore reality, live in fantasy and feed her BS.  Leave Obama’s veepstake to the capable team he appointed for this purpose and go home and make some more babies.
the airman:  Research 2000:  Obama up 12%!   Read it and weep.  Gallup Daily Tracking:  Obama up 8!

Poll's in July are so over rated.

Oh, and to ge back on topic of the Veepstakes:  I still like McCaskill!  It won't be Hillary.  I think it will be Biden, but you just never know.

Re:  Romney going to China for the Games, obviously he is going as a former Olympic CEO, hope he has a good time.  My main issue with Bush going is that sitting President's rarely go to the games overseas.
A Shameful Scam, update your attack:  Obama's camp paid for the trip from Jordan-London.  Taxpayers paid for the Congressional visit to Iraq and Afghanistan(which is why Hagel and Reed went).  Notice how he didn't hold a speech in Afghanistan?
CHATTERING CLASS. Despite the clues from Obama’s “Meet the Press” interview, don’t rule out senators like Bayh, Biden and Dodd just yet, according to Chris Cillizza.
******************************

Did Chris read our posts? But seriously, what was First Read talking about with their, 'go back and reread the first paragraph' drama this morning?

Chuckles.
I agree with Donna Bee and Clara from KC,MO.  Clara, I think you will wake up smiling on the 5th.  The pundiots made a lot of noise about the votes Sen Obama did not get in the primaries and they all but called the people who did not vote for him racists.  That was supremely unfair to the good people of Kentucky and West Virginia.  Did anyone notice, Sen Obama had stop campaigning against Sen Clinton after Indiana/NC?  The people in WV and KY voted for the candidate who campaigned in their state.  Whatever else they might be, these people are the type that respect the man/woman who comes and looks them in the eye.  Looking back on it, Sen Obama all but campaigned for Sen Clintoin towards the end and why not?  He'd won and there was very little to gain by "trying to crush her" (I say try, becuase she was and was a formidable opponent).  All he would accomplish would be to waste money and resources trying to do something he'd already done so he let her finish it out.  Maybe that was a mistake, but you can't call it anything but classy.  An interesting pattern with this guy, he made a similar judgment call with this troop visit in Landsthul that's geting so much overhyped attention.  Anyways, Sen Obama should make the effort to get those people on board, and if anyone can, he can.  Finally, I want to commend the frequent posters on this site, compared to other sites you guys, most of you anyway, bring informed opinions from both sides even though quite frankly the stories printed on here (re: shiny metal objects) are not worthy of the cheetos we eat while posting.
I guess this is bash Obama week for doing a outstanding job while out of the country, while giving Mcnut a standing ovation for his flip-flops, I once enjoyed Morning Joe, Hardball, and Race for the White House, but their obama bashing has made me to cancel satellite subsription,MSNBC is down the toliet
Jim Geraghty offers the idea of McCain announcing his choice at the convention “with the entire political world waiting in breathless anticipation, and with all of the finalists in the convention arena, the curtain suddenly rises on...”
*************************************

Oh please. Unless it's Senator Chuck Hagel, it will be as thrilling as raising the curtain on a bowl of chow marked the moniker 'Fido'.
Why shoud Democrats care about Independent voters in the central Midwest (KS, NE, Dakotas, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho). The map with Hillary is very simple: Carry all the states that Kerry/Gore won then add FLORIDA, OHIO, ARKANSAS and MISSOURI. Hillary and her many women / working class voters will do that for the ticket.
Hate her or love her but Obama/Hillary ticket is a SURE winner. The only question is "can Obama wins without Hillary on the tiocket?"
I am very much sure many Hillary white women voters will desert Obama and hand the election to McCain if he snubs her.
Obama has far more to lose that gain by not picking Hillary. I am afraid he (and his many anti Clinton supporters) will find out the hard way...then blame the Clinton for the loss.
MSNBC:  WNy has no one pointed out that if Hillary is speaking at the convention Tuesday, it means she is NOT the VP choice AND she already knows it AND Terry McAuliffe knows it.
The lies in the McCain ads really make me sad. What have we come to in this country—that utter upfront lies are considered clever and important to voters.
I'm hoping that Senator McCain chooses Mitt Romney.  Although I like McCain's ideas on energy and the economy, I think it will take someone with Romney's strong economic background to turn this country around.
As for obama, anyone he chooses as v.p. would be more qualified than obama himself, so who cares?
Sounds to me like McFossil is having a problem because he needs someone that shares his priorities but at the moment he can't figure out what his priorities are.... except for the SURGE.

I just can't believe that people say they trust this old coot. He can't remember what he said yesterday and he has no idea about the economy and votes against anything that would help women.

You republicans may rejoice if McFossil wins but by the end of November you will be crying when you finally realize all you have gotten yourselves is another 4 years of hell.

But what the hey.. at least we don't have an African American in charge. That's something for you to breathe easy about isn't it.

I am truly convinced that their are a vast number of stupid people in the country. You will lose everything you own and will still vote for the same.
Oh First Read,
Here goes Andrea Mitchell again, bagging on Obama on Hardball.  The fact that he credits more than one thing for the decrease in violence in Iraq, his answer is "complex".  Like that's a bad thing?  What the heck do you think the Middle East is, simple?  Additionally, he was behaving "too presidential"?  It went a little far?  What about the fact that he told one of the reporters who asked a question, "Let's get it straight, I am not the President, I am only a candidate", and "We don't criticize our president overseas".  That's not good enough for Andrea, huh?  Whatever, the guy can't get a break.
What about the car bomb and the female suicide bombs in Iraq today? What about the almighty "surge"?  Why didn't the "surge" protect everyone?
Obama is the best thing this country has seen in two decades.  Stop the drama, vote Obama.
