Kaine, facing cameras, stays mum

Posted: Tuesday, July 29, 2008 1:20 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Carrie Dann

WASHINGTON -- Some guys would have walked out a side door with just a wave  and a "no comment."

But, after being treated to front-page speculation this morning, veep potential and Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine held a full-blown press conference outside the Washington, D.C. radio station where he appeared to discuss state issues on a monthly radio show.

As in the radio interview, Kaine's press conference was peppered with questions about his rumored top spot as a vice presidential pick to the Democratic nominee. Kaine denied lobbying for the job -- a sure way not to get the job -- saying, "I have not sought it, I'm not running for it, I'm not asking for it. I've never asked anything of the campaign."

He refused to address rumors that he's had "serious conversations" about the job, saying that he does not publicly discuss his communications with the Obama campaign. (But the governor said that he does "chat fairly often" with Obama, mostly about campaign efforts in home state Virginia.)

And Kaine also tried to refute rumors that he would be meeting with Obama during his visit to Washington. "I don't have plans for any meeting with anybody on anything other than pure family," he said.  Earlier, during WTOP's show, he said that he "has no idea" when he next expects to see the Democratic nominee.

The lengthly outdoor press conference, attended by reporters and cameras from each of the five major networks, ensures that pictures of Kaine will make cable and evening newscasts in the nation's capital, at the very least upping the profile of the possible veep.

In addition to downplaying his own shot at the No. 2 spot, Kaine was also careful not to be too ebullient about the boss's odds.  Asked about Obama's comment at a fundraiser last night that, when it comes to the state of the presidential race, "the odds of winning are very good," he responded cautiously. "The polls are looking good for him right now," said Kaine. "but I think that we all still need to have, those of us who are his supporters, an underdog mentality about this race."

[EDITOR'S NOTE: An earlier version of this post incorrectly indicated that Kaine doesn't normally do the radio show from Washington, D.C. Kaine's office called First Read to let us know that Kaine, in fact, does normally do the show from D.C.]

Never gets old, speculating about who will be the candidates VP choice, does it?

Kaine's incompetence here is stunning: He has told people that he is being seriously considered by the Obama campaign, but it's unprofessional to do that. The professional thing to do is to decline to discuss anything about this and to state clearly that all of the campaign's discussions on this are confidential -- period.

I would be shocked if Obama hasn't crossed Kaine off the list of prospects, for this reason if for none other: Kaine doesn't know how to keep a secret, if there's a secret to keep -- Kaine is incompetent.
There is need to play a clean campaign but also need to make some points (3) clear.
1-about 100 years..
The present govern in Iraq is the third and next year will be the fourth. How long American people going to paid for the reconciliation in Iraq when we have our own natural disasters here at home and we are fund to take care of our people?
1-b Make clear that the reason to go to Iraq war become an issue in this campaign.

2- the notion of tax cut Republican claim.
What means getting artificial tax cut when at the same time the premium of heath care go up, the gas go up and fees and food go up. If the finality of the tax cut is to put more money in our hand the lack of leadership and the growth of special interest make that be more psychology than real saving.

3-Please you SHOULD fortify emphasis on the Timing for:

3-A-Gaz Price
3Aa-please explains the timing; when did you start to warn about the gas issue. And I suspected that was 8 months before McCain came up with $300M gift card for the battery. The time is the real issue

3Ab. you need to explain in a detail between short and long-term strategy offer by you why the one from McCain is an ineffective. The more detail you do the better off you are. It is not enough to be right you need to sell to American people at any level of education that you are right.

4- McCain is flip flop on Social security tax (everything is on the table imply tax increase) and that is what first Bush did. Please that has to be an issue. I know you want to run a clean campaign but if you keep defending you may not get a K O.

Who cares about this guy, Ted Stevens is headed for jail. Read all about how he's taking the Bridge to Nowhere all the way to jail!

Tim Kaine is the right man for the job. Va is moves to Dem column.
By LetsBeReasonable "Hmmm...born in Minnesota, attended college in Missouri, and serves as governor of Virginia - that's a swing state Trifecta! Harvard grad, civil rights lawyer, taught legal ethics, supports pre-kindergarten education, and takes a centrist (pragmatic) stance on fiscal policy, death penalty, gay marriage, and gun control. Draws votes from Republican leaning VA exurbs. Sounds like a pretty good match to me...all except for the "pro-life" footing - that may take the lustre off a bit".

He does bring the hispanic vote to the table to prolly 80%. Not because he speaks the language, but because he can relate culturally. he's lived the life, and his faith matters a lot to these folks. But yeah, his thin resume would be a potential setback.
Kaine's position as governor of a state the Obama campaign hopes to make a key battleground and his background as a Spanish-speaking former Catholic missionary and civil rights lawyer make him a strong potential pick.

Kaine could serve as ambassador, his proponents say, to four key groups: Virginians, Catholics, working-class white voters, and Hispanics. (Kaine can be seen in one YouTube video endorsing Obama in proficient Spanish.)

He should stay numb, whether he is or isn't the one picked. Personally, I think it's a bad choice, opening the door to all kinds of "inexperienced" charges from the RNC---again.
I trust Sen. Obama's judgment, but Kaine wasn't on my short list.

OBAMA/BIDEN, 2008!
The best way for Obama to win over blue-collar voters is not by picking a somewhat effeminate man with a lisp, no military experience and little political experience. Sorry. The right choice(s) are Jim Webb or Sam Nunn.
What exactly was Senator Obama's comment at the fundraiser last night?  Was it on First Read and I missed it?  Enlighten, please.

It would be wonderful if you nice folks would stop eliminating Senator Obama's veep possibilties for him.

So far youv'e thrown out:

Clark

Nunn

Hagel

Biden

and both Clintons, (I know it's ridiculos)!

My bad. That's right. Yesterday you put Biden back on the list just hours after you kicked him off.

Did it dawn on the pundits...that you are questioning the wrong person?  If you want to know who the VP will be, ask Obama. Think about it...He can't say anything at the press conference. If he did, he would not be considered.  Huffington Post has reduced the number to 3: Kaine, Bayh, and Biden. Obama will interview all three. This is not a telephone decision. Then he will wait untileither the press goes crazy or McCain does something to get good press, then the Obama camp will step on McCain's news with news of their own.  For all you Biden supporters out there, it ain't over yet. My bet is still on Biden. Obama is a student of history and Lincoln is one of his favorite Presidents.  Lincoln put most of the people who ran against him in a cabinet position or VP.
Personally I like Joe Biden. I had never heard of Kaine until recently. The last thing Obama needs on his ticket is another unknown. That said, has anyone else entertained the thought that the media is deliberatly dogging Obama to try to force him into picking HRC for VP? You just know they secretly drool over such a match up.
Obama-Kaine.

Oba-MaKaine.

Bad Karma?
More media Foder to piss off the Hillary dissenfranchised voters. I am sorry but this is more media hype just like folks saying No VP for Hillary = No vote for Obama. If that is how you feel [DA] theres your sign. The experiance line is bs just like all the other lies about Obama. Right wing talking points are as believable as saying that the war in Iraq was necessary. That would be deserving of one of my patented Bullsnit sneezes. Nope let the media deside for us again the way they did Kerry and Gore. The way they turn the primary into a shooting match when it wasn't even close until Hillary started using Repub talking points and got the assist from the media.
I would have laughed if he slipped and said "yes I'm the VP for Obama" Would have taken all the sail out of Obama's build up to the convention and would allow McCain to get it right.
I do not think he would be a good choice. Nobody has heard of him. We need someone who has publicity and has been around for a while. Let's remember that McCain is running on experience and a lot of people like that. I am for Biden.
Isn't there anything else to blog about today?
if I see kaines name one more time today I'm gonna puke, he's a nobody that offers nothing, biden makes more since for several reasons, or edwards, the person worse than kaine would be hillary, but rumor has she is going to mccains running mate since they are both owned by the same corporations.
how about this response to the recent dishonest McCain attacks:
VoteVets, the pro-Democrat group of retired military personnel, counters McCain's Black Hawk down statement with some outrage from Col. Katherine Scheirman (Ret.), the retired Chief of Medical Operations for United States Air Force in Europe Headquarters at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany:

"John McCain's new ad is dishonest and shameful, and I say that as the former Chief of Medical Operations. Senators Hagel and Reed confirmed to Bob Schieffer yesterday that Senator Obama visited the Combat Support Hospital in Baghdad as a part of their CODEL, with no media present.

"In Germany, Senator Obama made the right decision to respect wounded troops, and the doctors and nurses doing crucial and time-sensitive work, by not making a visit that was characterized as a campaign event by the Pentagon. Senator Obama should be thanked for putting our military above politics. And, I would hope that John McCain would think in those same terms, the next time he is put in a similar situation.

"Senator Obama has voted for the troops when John McCain has not, most recently on the new GI Bill. I am happy that Senator Obama puts the welfare of our troops above politics."
Also, it's notable that Obama's camp, quick to respond to most every charge and ever-conscious of not repeating the mistakes of Kerry, has yet to go on the air with a spot pushing back against McCain's charge on the troop visit.  Apparently, they won't unless McCain puts real money behind his spot and goes beyond just gaming it for earned media.
I think they will make the announcement tomorrow afternoon sometime... http://www.enewsreference.wordpress.com
Has the Obama team been testing Gov. Kaine much?  I don't remember ever hearing him as a surrogate, and that, in my opinion, is what Obama needs the most.  I still say, believe it or not, that Obama's greatest weakness is not his understanding of foreign or domestic concerns--surely that is apparent.  No, his biggest weakness is ironically his ability to communicate.  Certainly, he can give an amazing speech (or several).  He needs somebody who can help him to honestly connect with voters, bring down the lofty rhetoric and take his message home in a simple, concise, non-Harvard manner.

My personal favs, because it would show Obama is honest about changing things, might be a Hagel, Bloomberg, Biden--all pretty straight-shooting honest guys.
Richard, LOL THAT IS TOO FUNNY!!!!!!!!
No you folk's don't make the rule's anymore the rules are of change believe it if any person who would like to be or is being vetted want's to sound interested in the job they should say and act like it this is not a but kissing contest it's a honarable position being issued out from a decent Senator named Obama for if it were me I say it straight up he really want's someone who will stick their neck out on his behalf I like Kaine's style don't forget about me Senator Obama reallyt can pick any-one who does not have a lot of baggage he has studied most of the people he think's will be capable of backing him up,so the rest of you might as well step to him or step up come on Richardson, Mrs. Barabra,Biden,Nancy,McCain even Kerry this is a demorcratic year nobody need's to get scared or pay attention to the fear tactic's no years can be worser or shameful this is the change worth believing in and most know it's going to happen people forget we are not the only people in the world and Obama did a good job on the respect level from other nation's who ever get's the knod must understand what's at stake no offense on Hillary but can she be trusted she might be scorned good lady but don't know might give to much amo to McCain made the contest to long also it's his choice but humbleness is going to have to be a key for he would do the same if he was picked plus never like the joke when she threw out the VP to him so if he loses let it be by his own accord not some old new's yet Rendell has heart that's the type of grit that going to be neede in the Vices debate.
I will trust in Obamas choice, but I sure hope his choice is my choice- Biden. Biden will give us the experience the GOP keeps harping on, it will also settle down some of our dems who really need to see someone they know on the ticket. A lot of our older
voters would be more comfortable with a man or woman
they know. kudos to all that see the msm trying to decide this election. Is there anyway to shut up Joe S., he is just plain sickening. I was surprised to see Andrea Mitchell acting like a reporter last night
instead of a right wing pundit. Pat B. Good Grief man, just listen to yourself.
Obama/Biden  08
marty
For all I know, Kaine would be a good candidate, but therein lies the trouble.  I don't know, and I agree with whoever said earlier that there just isn't time to get to know him.  Change is important, but Obama can't change much if he doesn't get the job.
