Obama = Britney and Paris?

From NBC's Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro
In its latest TV ad hitting Obama, the McCain campaign calls Obama the "biggest celebrity in the world" -- and in the process shows clips of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. The ad continues, "With gas prices soaring, Barack Obama says no to offshore drilling. And says he'll raise taxes on electricity. Higher taxes, more foreign oil, that's the real Obama."

On Morning Joe yesterday, McCain manager Rick Davis compared Obama to Paris Hilton. "Barack Obama has become a global celebrity," he said. "I mean, Barack Obama has more fans across the world than Paris Hilton does. I mean, it's just an extraordinary thing. And I don't think anybody would underestimate that."

Unlike its TV ad blasting Obama (falsely) over the Landstuhl controversy, which ran just a handful of times, this new ad, the campaign says, will be cycled into the campaign's buy on national cable and in Colorado, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Northern Virginia, and Wisconsin.

*** UPDATE *** Obama camp's response: “On a day when major news organizations across the country are taking Senator McCain to task for a steady stream of false, negative attacks, his campaign has launched yet another," Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor said. "Or, as some might say, ‘Oops! He did it again.’  Our dependence on foreign oil is one of the greatest challenges we face. In this election the American people have a real choice -- between Obama’s plan to provide tax rebates to American families while creating a renewable energy economy in America that frees us from our dependence on foreign oil, and Senator McCain’s plan to continue the same failed energy policies by handing out nearly $4 billion in tax breaks to oil companies while investing almost nothing in the new energy sources that represent our future."

Below is the script:
ANNCR: He's the biggest celebrity in the world.
But, is he ready to lead?
With gas prices soaring, Barack Obama says no to offshore drilling.
And says he'll raise taxes on electricity.
Higher taxes, more foreign oil, that's the real Obama.
JOHN MCCAIN: I'm John McCain and I approved this message.

Running on lies will not help Senator McCain.  Over the years he has been great for us in the Republican party by holding us accountable when things got out of hand.  I admired him for taking a stance against a variety of Republican policies even if it was at his expense.  Unfortunately it appears that he is being eaten up by the far right and forgetting those of us that are closer to the middle.  He is up to the same scare tactics that got me to vote for Bush.  This time it will not work.

I will not succumb to the fear that got me to vote Republican for 20+ years.  Our country needs fixing and Senator McCain wants status quo.

Bold-faced lying about Senator Obama's stance on alternative fuels is a abomination.  I checked out Senator Obama's website (www.barackobama.com) and saw for myself what he supports.  He wants investment in alternative fuels, wind power, solar, etc. and is not opposed to drilling for more oil so long as it is on land that has existing leases (much of which is offshore).  My opinion is not out of step.  Go to http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/547/ and check it out for yourself.

The surge started after the Iraqi people had already come together to fight agains Al Queda.  The only thing the surge helped was to kill a few more American soldiers.  Besides, Al Queda was not in Iraq before we invaded.

Senator Obama's plan does not increase taxes on those people making as little as $32,000 per year.  Go here to verify: http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/the_32000_question.html .

Nor does his tax plan hurt small business.  Check this out: http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/mccains_small-business_bunk.html

From what I can tell from his website, Senator Obama's plans are very clearly defined and he speaks openly and candidly about his positions.  On the other hand, Senator McCain appears to be the politically expedient flip-flopper lately changing his position on the Iraq timetable, affirmative action, and more.

I'm sick of the lies I've been told by the Republican party and don't want any more.  I am going to do my part and vote for Senator Obama this November.  Maybe then the Republicans will get the message that they not only will not gain votes from Democrats, but they will also be losing votes of some of their own and they can wake up to the reality that it is time to re-evaluate their positions and candidates.

Obama '08, Romney '12
Yeah so uh... don't vote for Obama because... lots of people like him! You don't want to vote for someone who is well liked by everyone do you?
Jealousy is unbecoming of a man of your stature, Sen. McCain.
So who can McCain claim as his celebrity base? Tommy Dorsey? Frank Sinatra? The Big Band Era? Certainly nobody current.
http://twocanpete.blogspot.com
Hey! Paris is going to be 'like really mad' when she hears about this.
This has to be the most ineffective ad ever.  It makes no sense, and is full of lies.  It actually makes me want to vote for Obama more....

The McCain campaign is really coming apart at the seams it looks like......poor guy, he throws all sorts of rubbish at Obama and nothing sticks.

They make it sound like it's a bad thing to have America (ergo Americans) admired for a change.  Wow, talk about 'dumbing down' the election.

I am pretty disgusted with the candidate who is making W seem 'ssssmmmaaaaarrrtt' - I can't really even type that with a straight face.
That is too funny! Paris Hilton has "fans"? She is a young celebrity without much of a career (yet, bless her heart). Barack Husein Obama is the man we will look to to lead our country through some VERY challenging times and into the 21st century. How can we compare the 2 without making ourselves look... well silly John?
at least they didn't say he's been running around flashing his _________
Paris is hot, Obama is not.
mccain is such a piece of trash - that guy is utterly worthless to me - no honour - no integrity - just an angry old shell of a man - anybody but mccain

There is some big news going out today in the news based on doubts issued from Chief Justice Robert's recent 2nd epileptic attack: That the results came back as cancer.

The Boise Idaho News radio 580 AM mentioned it around 7:15 this morning, they typically follow right leaning events.

This is huge news, imagine if such a young right leaning justice were to be replaced next presidency?
Wow.

The other guy's more popular than your guy.

Scandalous!

And in response, all your guy and his supporters do is talk about the other guy, rather than why anyone should want to vote for your guy.

And you wonder why the other guy is more popular than your guy?
New polls taken yesterday show a toss-up in NC and a big Obama lead in PA, another sign the Democrat is ahead: http://campaigndiaries.com/2008/07/29/tuesday-polls-obama-ahead-in-pa-stable-race-in-nc-gop-ahead-in-mi-07-nm-01-internals/
mccant is known as bush and cheneys best friend fore ever and don't forget his good buddy rove and his long time senate buddy stevens good company to be in.
WOW. that's just hysterical.  At least the GOP will be confirming votes for Obama from all the women who read US Weekly and Perez Hilton.
Okay, so you're running this, and your yakkers will be yakking about it all afternoon based on the represenation that this will be "cycled into" the ad buys.  Why not wait until this disreputable campaign actually puts its money where its mouth is before giving them the misleading buzz?  Do us all a favor.

There's nothing straight about McCain's talk and he is surely not putting 'country first'---gimme a break.
Wow. McCain is really stooping to new lows. Does this man have any ads planned that will tell what he stands for?
Oh, poor McCain...Show the visuals of the world in rapt attention awaiting words from Senator Obama and then ask "Is he ready to lead?"  OF COURSE HE IS!  And the visuals prove that we're also ready to BE led by him.

I don't think you're on the right track here, John, if you're looking to sway people to your agenda that is.
McCain can now add, "According to Dana Milbank of the Washington Post....."Dana Milbank plays with facts and quotes to fit the narrative he's spinning in order to get attention. This man is selling books as well as his appearances on cable news, Daily Show, Bill Maher, Colbert Report, etc. He's making money, not reporting news. The Post owes the public a retraction for this morning's lies. I'm reminded of how Mary McCarthy famously said of Lillian Hellman on The Dick Cavett Show that "every word she writes is a lie, including 'and' and 'the'."
hahaha...Sounds like jealousy to me! Obama is now well known and might i add, well respected around the world because he earned it. Get over it, grow up and grow a pair. Obama is here to stay (losers).
Strangely, I like the commercial! Keep 'em coming Big Mac! (Next time - include some of that footage of Hillary pumping gas too!)

Whatever happened to all that talk about repealing the gas tax? Guess the news that the budget to maintain roads and bridges was already billions of dollars in the hole kind of ruined that, huh?

Don't you hate it when REALITY ruins perfectly good rhetoric?

P.S. Why is Senator Obama's success so hard for the McCain campaign to process? People LIKE him - as Martha Stewart would say - that's a good thing! :)
Heaven forbid that Americans should have affection for their President. Let's continue to hate all politicans and watch the country go down together wrapped in our apathy.

Showing B. Spears and P. Hilton is soooo Republican. That's their example of popular entertainment figures? Come on guys -- get someone younger than 70 on your team to help with the PR.

What happened to John McCain? Geez.
Mark Murray: Please explain what was false about the Landstuhl visit.  He was scheduled to go visit the troops and didn't.  What's false in that?
Just might get even more young people to vote.

It also shows just how out-of-touch the McCain campaign is.  Brittney and Paris?  They are so several years ago.  They would have done better using Miley Cyrus or Amy Winehouse.

On top of it McCain lies about offshore drilling.  Senator Obama doesn't oppose it, he opposes opening up more offshore leases when there are millions of acres of offshore areas already approved to drill in but that the oil companies are not exploring.  I say let them explore what they already have first, then we can talk about additional leases.  It is not that there is no more available to drill in, it is that the oil companies are not interested in paying for any exploration in the areas they already have.
Why does every McCain ad get a FR response. This is ridiculous! Obama released an ad today as well but you choose to ignore it only because it's not an attack ad. Quit encouraging this non-sense.
Just as bad as the Reno 911 ad, who is in charge of all this garbage anyways? Another slow news day for McLame & Co.
Mr Chuck Todd,

I watched you this morning on Morning Jealous...error Joe.  Nice try in trying to label Obama as an arrogant person. Arrogant is you!!! You think you know everything about politics. You need to cut that garbage out boy!!!!!!
Jealousy is an ugly thing McChumpCamp and let me say, you need no help in that department. Your campaign has been sloppy, undisciplined, off-message (don’t really have a message), negative (tell us what you’re going to do instead of attacking in every other line that comes out of your mouth)—I could go on.

These types of ads don’t help your cause… thanks for the assistance.
This is absolutely pathetic. This is how John McCain expects to win in November? I'm embarrassed for him.
once again, its really sad when campaigning has sunk this low...
Just what America needs, another disliked jerk like Bush! Keep it up McCranky.
This is emblematic of the style of politics that Americans are trying to get way from, i.e. focusing on negative attack ads instead of offering solutions to our problems

Running on lies has HELPED Obama since the media has concealed his lies and deceptions.
Obama LIED about the Kennedys bringing his father to America!  but WaPo is the ONLY media that reported Obama's LIE.
And the Kennedys went along with the LIE...

http://www.talkleft.com/story/2008/3/30/13655/6958

This is supposed to win over Independents? Looks more like red meat for diehard red voters, but hardly a convincing ad for undecideds. BTW Britney and Paris look lovely in this ad. This may give their careers a bump!
Can you say "backfire"? I am looking forward to McCain squirming when he is questioned about these type of ads. He will come off as slimy guy in the debates. It is easy to put up a shifty ad. It is much harder when questioned about it during a debate. America is not going to like watching it. Sad McCain. Sad. Only thing heroic he ever did was refusing early release in Vietnam. Kudos, but it not a good enough reason to put this wingnut in charge.
BREAKING NEWS--

McCain Caught on Hot Mic:

"Who does he think he is?  That Obama is one uppity n*****!"
Excellent post, Republican voting Democrat.  My Republican father has even seen the light so I know that through all of the media attacks and confusions, the American people are hungry for true leadership.

I thought that this Steve Schmidt guy was going to be good for the McCain campaign.  The Double Talk Express has gotten even worse.  Sen. McCain has been looking more petty, dishonest, and unpresidential by the day.  Now I can really see why Mike Murphy didn't want any part of this trainwreck of a campaign.  I love the ad because it is a good waste of money that McCain could have used for say maybe organizing or paying staff.  I had no idea that Sen. McCain was such a jealous whiner.
Awfully risky on McCain's part to go this negative this early. These ads his campaign is coming out with are just pety whine-fests.

First Read,

You reported this morning that Obama is up with a new ad. Where is it?

MSN is in violation of campaign finance rules to seize upon every negative ad McCain is throwing out, then airing them over, and over for free under the disingenuous guise of reporting the news.

Again, where is the Obama ad?
John McCain and his cronies are pathetic; words can not begin to even express the utter disgrace John McCain has become.

He uses to be an honorable person and now he is showing that he is a bitter sore loser with no dignity or shame.

But, the worst of it is - he does these ads and has his surrogates say these things - and then think the America people will like it or be on his side.

John McCain sickens me, whenever I see his ads on T.V. I turn the channel.  I read the ills of his campaign - just so I can continue to see the filth he has become.

I honestly believe he will be worst than George Bush and if "god forbid" he became President - he would caused world destruction.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
The McCain campaign and the GOP at-large have no consistent and relevant message to give to the American people.  The McCain campaign as well as the GOP know the only way they can win the November election is by the "politics of personal destruction".  They have to attack Obama as a radical left-leaning, unpatriotic, arrogant, out-of-touch, celebrity politician.  Even McCain has started to adopt this mentality in his stump speeches.

The McCain campaign and GOP better get back to the issues that concern ordinary Americans or they will lose in a landslide.
The corporate media pundits and reporters like Obama - and get tingles up their legs at the mention of his name.
That's enough reason right there to vote for McCain.

Dems for McCain!

NObama!

Not sure how this ad helps McCain. If anything, it probably broadens Obama's base. I'm sure McCain's gampaign thinks they are being really funny with the Paris and Brittany thing, but, I just don't see it working with anyone other than cranky old men who are not voting for Obama anyway.
This is unfortunately I think an effective smear add.  Paris Hilton is one of the most ditsy celebrities out there.  This paints him as 'out of touch' and just plain 'stupid'.  This has no substance to it; it is ALL LIES . . . but it will give some racist hick in Appalachia a reason to, once again, vote AGAINST, their own best interests!  This add plays to people who have no informed opinion of Obama but only say that he's 'scary'!  Go job stupefying this election McCain!  Could you just DUMB US DOWN EVEN MORE!!??  Articulation is to be spurned . . . you really want to hold true to the BUSH standards don't you?!!
See comments above about nothing wrong in voting for somebody you "like".  True.  But, "likability" isn't enough. The man has to be more than a good speaker and so-so basketball player.  I don't care if he shoot hoops; what's he going to do to better our economy and energy problems? With Obama, there's no "yes we can" on energy. It's all "no we can't" on nuclear, coal, off shore drilling, etc.  If you read McCain's Lexington Project at his website, you will see he has an energy plan with short, intermediate and long term goals.
you know if i'm a reagan republican or a goldwater republican these ads would be making me real mad!!!! this guy is trashing obama instead of addressing the real issues!!! reagan would have never done this!!!! that is what use to just kill me about reagan, he would stay with the issues!!!
i'm a dem, have voted for dems all but one time since i first votes in 1980, i use to think john mccain was a different kind of republican!! a lone wolf at times against the intire pack! but this whole thing is getting STUIPID!!! REAGAN, GOLDWATER, NIXION ARE ROLLING OVER IN THERE GRAVES,  AND I BET 10.00 BUCKS THAT GHB COULD NOT BE TO HAPPY TO SEE THIS KIND OF CRAP FROM A REPUBLICAN!!!
JOHN MCCAIN STOP TALING STUPID PILLS!!!!!
This ad is the "height" of envy!!!Wouldn't it be something if both Paris and Britney (who both are still pretty popular in the "under 30 world" came out and endorsed him and sued the Republicans for using them in an ad?. You just know those "knuckleheads" didn't get permission.  PRICELESS!!!
Republican voting Democrat in November -- great post thank you for posting an intelligent and well researched opinion. This ad by McCain does nothing to move this country forward. If more people like you did the research this country would be much better off today than it currently is.
So instead we should vote for a dishonorable, mean spirited, hateful, bitter old man with absolutely nothing to offer America or the world?? Thanks but no thanks!
