Obama = Britney and Paris?

From NBC's Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro
In its latest TV ad hitting Obama, the McCain campaign calls Obama the "biggest celebrity in the world" -- and in the process shows clips of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. The ad continues, "With gas prices soaring, Barack Obama says no to offshore drilling. And says he'll raise taxes on electricity. Higher taxes, more foreign oil, that's the real Obama."

On Morning Joe yesterday, McCain manager Rick Davis compared Obama to Paris Hilton. "Barack Obama has become a global celebrity," he said. "I mean, Barack Obama has more fans across the world than Paris Hilton does. I mean, it's just an extraordinary thing. And I don't think anybody would underestimate that."

Unlike its TV ad blasting Obama (falsely) over the Landstuhl controversy, which ran just a handful of times, this new ad, the campaign says, will be cycled into the campaign's buy on national cable and in Colorado, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Northern Virginia, and Wisconsin.

*** UPDATE *** Obama camp's response: “On a day when major news organizations across the country are taking Senator McCain to task for a steady stream of false, negative attacks, his campaign has launched yet another," Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor said. "Or, as some might say, ‘Oops! He did it again.’  Our dependence on foreign oil is one of the greatest challenges we face. In this election the American people have a real choice -- between Obama’s plan to provide tax rebates to American families while creating a renewable energy economy in America that frees us from our dependence on foreign oil, and Senator McCain’s plan to continue the same failed energy policies by handing out nearly $4 billion in tax breaks to oil companies while investing almost nothing in the new energy sources that represent our future."

Below is the script:
ANNCR: He's the biggest celebrity in the world.
But, is he ready to lead?
With gas prices soaring, Barack Obama says no to offshore drilling.
And says he'll raise taxes on electricity.
Higher taxes, more foreign oil, that's the real Obama.
JOHN MCCAIN: I'm John McCain and I approved this message.

Clara:

I agree. I think the Ad will backfire. Obama is a big celebrity. How nice to have a President for a change that is well liked and followed across the globe. You have to get people's attention first before you can influence them to make progress, domestically and internationally.
McCain doesn't have to throw rubbish at Obama.

Mr. Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee (not), Mr. Count on Me to Filibuster FISA (not), Mr. Don't Tell Me I Don't Have a Claim on Selma (not), Mr. Environmental Legislation I Passed (not) is a self-perpetuating trash dumpster all on his own!

One can hardly blame the McCain campaign for remarking on the obvious.
John McCain and his cronies are pathetic; words can not begin to even express the utter disgrace John McCain has become.

He uses to be an honorable person and now he is showing that he is a bitter sore loser with no dignity or shame.

But, the worst of it is - he does these ads and has his surrogates say these things - and then think the America people will like it or be on his side.

John McCain sickens me, whenever I see his ads on T.V. I turn the channel.  I read the ills of his campaign - just so I can continue to see the filth he has become.

I honestly believe he will be worst than George Bush and if "god forbid" he became President - he would caused world destruction.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
I think Obama has chosen Bayh (Indiana) as his running mate.

Obama / Bayh - 08/12
Perfect!! Nice job McCain.
So....What are the chances that MSNBC will run its own FactCheck and only air ads that are...80% accurate. Or just take the money and run lies.
Just as in the primaries First Read is giving FREE advertising to Obama's opponents.  EVERY Clinton ad was posted, daily we had Clinton ads...  Obama hardly ever had ads posted here.

I counted the ads up a few months ago and Clinton got more ads listed by a factor of about 3x.
Wow........Can you say complete and total desperation by the McLoser campaign? First, "He would rather lose wars to win elections", then the drivel Sunday; "He just doesn't understand" Followed by the lies about visiting the troops in Germany.....Now this? Keep 'em coming - Their is no way this angry flailing around and repetitive lying helps anyone but Obama!

P.S. FR - Please denounce any reports incorrectly using partial quotes that create this "narrative" you guys seem to need to keep your jobs. The real "narrative" is this man is humble, thoughtful, and anything but arrogant. That is the true narrative that should be loudly made obvious to an electorate that actually voted for Bush twice.....Please don't contribute to the lie-machine that is the McCain campaign by further blurring reality.

Just report the truth......Not that the truth doesn't matter - thanks.
...you approved this message?  Wow.
This ad will backfire.  It shows Obama looking Presidential, and as a leader.  I think more than anything else, it will make people take a closer look at his stand on issues.

What it does do is make McCain look like he is eating sour grapes.

Are the American people listening to the truth like the rest of the world or are they listening to the bias of the MSM?

No Grumpy Old Man for Prez.  Won't matter who he picks for Veep, he is still deceptive, misleading, grouchy, bitter and the sacrifical lamb of the Republican party.

BTW, what is wrong with having a president that other leaders and nations might like???  It is refreshing to see the world hoping for change in America too.  Did the current administration and power brokers ever stop to think that one of the reason we are attacked by terrorists is because of their foreign policy??? Did they ever stop to think that we don't need to be the world's police force??? Maybe we can begin working with other nations and stop abusing our power.
I think Reagan was a celebrity. This is total desperation.  Shame on GOP & McLame.
What's wrong with Paris and Britney? I think Paris should run for office in future.
Britney and Paris are like Obama? That's a stretch. I view Obama being more in the league of a Hanna Montana.
Wha, wha, wha - McComplainer is the biggest whinner of all.  Wha - people like Obama more than me; wha - Obama speaks better than me; wha - Obama has better ideas and policies than me; wha- i'm going to hold my breath until people like me more.  good luck - no country for old man.
It is really sad that we as Americans have to sit by watch the ignorance that the GOP is demonstrating at such an important time in our lives. Instead of talking about issues that American's are facing they are complaining about the popularity of another candidate, which should be a plus. Our economy has spiralled to the depths of hell and they don't have any ideas about how to fix it so their only alternative is to downplay the solutions of their opponent. McCain has yet to come offer up anything other than war, the surge, my friends, no taxes, maybe taxes, no experience, etc. One question that no one has asked McCain yet is "Where is the proof of your experience?" I have not seen any evidence of it yet.
If this ad does anything, it shows Obama in a positive light, in my opinion. The shouts of "Obama! Obama!" are more prominent than the narrator's voice, and my eye is drawn to the crowd scenes of Berlin, not the words on the screen (or the insipid "celebrity" images). Probably not what the GOP intended!

On the surface, it's a bunch of baldfaced lies that we are too smart to accept as fact, a few of many falsehoods John McCain has been telling lately (when he can remember them). Seriously. The only thing he succeeds in doing is showing how small and petty he is and how transcendent of a candidate Obama is.

Clara -- Exactly.

You'd think, wouldn't you, that after 7 plus years of having our have-a-beer-with-friendly POTUS be reviled and villified around the world, voters would kill to have a smart president with star quality instead of another Bush (or should that be Busch?) leaguer.

Obama/Biden 08
How low can McCain go ? It's sad to see this former respectable man screem and yell .... he is *this* close to resort to racial slurs.
What makes this ad even stupider is how behind in the times McCain is.  Britney?  Paris?  They're so 3-5 years ago.  Current tabloid scoops are all about Amy Winehouse and Miley Cyrus.

Although, comparing a 46 year old sitting Senator to young female pop singers is an unbelievable stretch that completely defeats any message put into the attack.  How can McCain tie Paris Hilton to his misleading attacks on Obama's energy policies?  Trying to link the two creates a cognitive dissonance that results more in laughter than mistrust of Obama.

Making energy a polarizing issue (YAY/BOO DRILLING!) is probably the best course McCain can take, the clearest path that lay before him.  Why is he making it look so difficult to do?  It's mind-boggling how bad his offensive ads are.  Bush's singularly focused attacks on Kerry ("traitor!") were brilliant simplicity compared to McCain's rambling message.  No matter how much jello he tries to throw against a wall, it won't stick, even if most of the MSM is trying like hell to put glue on the wall for him.
I can't believe McCranky continues to have this whining-tantrum. He's making himself look foolish and people are beginning to roll their eyes and walk away. Hell of a way to win a popularity contest.
twocanpete,

You never post anything that is not negative. No matter who, whether Hillary, Obama, McCain, the dems, or the repubs, you always tear everybody.

As Chuck Hagel says, "Get out of that".

Here's a heavy hitter list of CELEBRITY names leaked of those 100's of government and MILITARY experts who purchased fake diplomas to "qualify" for their jobs as "protect America patriots":

Obama is more like Paris and less like Britney. Britney has actually done something in her life. Paris has as many accomplishments as Obama has, which is none. Both Paris and Obama are famous just because someone has decided that they're famous.
Diane from Illinois:  Please don't insult Sinatra by saying he'd vote for McShame - ole blue eyes was a dem who, I suspect, would have wholeheartedly supported Obama!
what is going on with this campaign?  Who the hell is running it?
The sad thing is that some uneducated voter in the hills of WV is going to vote against Obama based on this ad.

And we wonder about the dumbing down of America?
If this is the best McSame can come up with, then he better start planning on how to spend the rest of his now permanently damaged Senate career.
These ads are a complete joke.  Completely targeted to the lowest common denominator.  It's really pathetic and insulting.
Well, folks, here ya go...THEY'VE JUMPED THE SHARK!!!

Britney Spears, Paris Hilton...Barack Obama?  Really?

Jealousy is unbecoming a man in your position, Senator McCain.

Surely you're not trying to compare two bimbos like Britney and Paris to a man who graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School and was President of Harvard Law Review when you, Senator McCain graduated 894 out of 899 in your USNA class!
The ad is great!

Obama says No We Can't!! to energy exploration.

P.S. WHY ARE ALL THE BLOGGERS HERE SOOOOO PRO-OBAMA?? WHY? Might it be that MSNBC/First Read is "Pro-Obama"??

Chuck Todd, shame on you. You're a fish!!! A fish in Obama's tank. Chuck Todd wants to be Obama's first presidential press secretary.

McCain 08/12!!
The pundits have become so enamored with hearing their own voices, they have started to babble. This is the biggest jibberish since I don't know when. If the man goes out and be the best that he can be, and people fall in love with his presentation of self... why in God's name should that be reflected in a bad light? Have we really become so stupid?

I am increasingly disgusted with the NONSENSE being touted as news. Garbage of the highest degree... There's a HUGE oil spill off New Orleans coast... for the life of me, I can't get any news on how the clean up is going... or the progress of the hundreds of ships stuck with cargo on board costing Americans millions of dollars.

Do some  meaningful reporting for God's sake !!!
And yet...people still defend this McCain.
Obama just slammed McCain for running ads that do nothing but attack him without offering any new ideas:

http://strategy08.wordpress.com/2008/07/30/obama-in-mo-slaps-mccain-on-economy-finally/
According to Media Watchers… MSNBC and Fox News have given John McCain the freest advertising of all the stations.  And here is another example of their undying love for John McCain.

Oh and by the way is anyone going to force Joe Scarborough to apologize for helping spread false stories from a second hand source about Senator Obama?

Morning Joe and Race to the White could not survive without covering Senator Obama. 90% of their coverage is of Senator Obama and 10% is of Senator McCain.
This is shameful... Jealousy... because he may get 200 people on a really great day and Mr. Obama can get 200,000 in another country.
We should all be PROUD that the world wants to embrace a president from the United States again.
Finally someone that can put two words together in a sentence that does not include SURGE, BOMB or KILL.

The media is not helping matters.  They just don't want to face the fact that this man may be our next prez.  I, for one can hardly wait.

I would never be able to vote for McPetty, who is showing that he is jealous, spitful and ridiculous shell of a man.

Glad they gave McInSane some tooth whiteners though.

Someone put Morning Joe in the can.  He is a FOOL and those that don't challenge his daily Rants of Obama Bashing, are just as bad.
I understand they can NOT get a work in (especially if they don't agree with him), but to sit and look like a bobble head is a waste of a chair.
John McCain with his phoney laugh and malicious grin is only hurting his past image as a standpup guy.  Obama should just ignore these deerate ads and continue working will well-qualified people on foreign policy and domestic issues.  When he announces his vp, he should also tell who he will chose for secy state and defense.  Once we see Obama and Mccain side by side in the debates, the stark difference in appearance alone will be favorable to Obama.
If I am not mistaken, of the last FOUR ads McCain has rolled out, ALL of them have attacked Obama, and NONE of them are about promoting John McCain.
It's hard to believe that people would want our President to be hated around the world. Because the best way to fix our foriegn policy or get out of Iraq is to make sure everyone hates us. Thanks Dubya for spreading the seed hate.
It used to be that every time McCain opened his mouth either George Bush came out or McCain's foot went in.  Now, it's just lies, lies, and more lies from McCain. He even lies about running a clean campaign.

Does he lie because he has no honor?  Does he lie because he's really just like any other politician and not a "maverick" afterall?  Does he lie because he forgets and he's too old to remember what anyone said from one day to the next? (uh, I never said timetable."

So, after much discussion and debate, my husband and I have decided that McCain's cognitive abilities are probably not due to dementia but to lack of intelligence and intellect -- i.e., he's just as dumb as Bush.  God help us.

* And for those who insist on ridiculing Obama as the "Messiah" -- wouldn't that make McCain the Anti-Christ?  thought so.
Barack Obama reminds me of the time my nipples were electrocuted.  And says he'll raise taxes on electricity. Higher taxes, more foreign oil, that's the real Obama.

I mean, it's gone from inane to ridiculous.  Let's just compare Barack Obama to things that people dislike.

Besides, aren't Paris Hilton, Britney Spears and Lindsey Lohan all dumb trainwrecks that have more in common (behavior and intelligence) with our current President?  And doesn't that connection hurt McCain?
This is shameful... Jealousy... because he may get 200 people on a really great day and Mr. Obama can get 200,000 in another country.
We should all be PROUD that the world wants to embrace a president from the United States again.

Why do you keep giving these sleazy ads publicity?  It's already been studied that they hardly air as paid ads, because the networks play them hundreds of times.  In addition to turning news into tabloid journalism, it's a stupid business model to provide free advertising instead of charging for it, which is the networks' revenue source.
Instead of telling America why we should VOTE FOR McCain....

They're reduced to telling American to VOTE AGAINST Obama

To counter this, I think Obama has to BE SPECIFIC about his economiuc policies

The rpeublicans are suing the 'big lie' that Obama will raise taxes on the middle class...
He won't he'll raise taxes on the upper income and reduce taxes for the middle class

What were the results of the Economic meeting, this week ?
If Obama is SPECIFIC about his economic proposals (and women's issues') , he'll WIN

Clearly, the McCain camp has NOTHING to sell or promote
McCain is REALLY drifting
Serves him right

McCain/Stevens '08
Taxi to the toilet
I have voted Republican from the first time I could vote (roughly 10 yrs).  Mccain has some serious issues it would seem.  There is no way I could ever vote for this man.  The constant negativity and out-right lies.  Here's another lost vote.  Obama '08
I’m observing this from far away, “Guyana, South America”, and I can say that this is the most watched election ever. Not because of Sen. McCain, but because of Sen. Obama. I think the world wants to see if America, the symbol of freedom and equality can practice what it preaches, because we all know, if it was a white person carrying the same message as Sen. Obama this election would be over a long time ago, and we know who would win. He is well liked for the message and possibilities he brings, not cause he is black.
Jealous, talks out of both sides of his mouth - THAT"S THE REAL JOHN MCCAIN!

After saying  "no new taxes", McCain says "everything is on the table as far as Social Security taxes."

After saying "timetables was a buzzword for withdrawal", McCain now says 16 months is a good "timetable".

McCain denies, flatly, that he ever said that he is not an expert in economics. (Tim Russert called him on that one, God bless Tim!)

One week McCain says he's against sending more troops to Afghanistan, the next week he says he's for it.

McCain confuses Shiite and Sunni, Iraq/Afghanistan border, Czechoslovakia, McCain has also mistaken "Somalia" for "Sudan," and even football’s Green Bay Packers for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Says he would NEVER use military troops for political gain - that's EXACTLY what he's doing in his ad!

McCain just makes things up as he goes along. Not to mention he graduated 894th out of 899 at Annapolis.

Mr.McCain;you are definetly not for change and havn't learned that a negative campaign is old hat.You stand behind a terrible current administration including policies like having invaded Iraq(and you defend this stupidity). On this note alone you should retire from politics and conceed the election to the Democratics.Mr.McCain wake up and stop the old bull;it ain't gonna work this November.Tell everyone the war is wrong;the surge is propaganda and your party sucks---you will gain much needed respect and maybe a shot at George W's desk.
How is it that only liberal McCain haters have time to waste during normal business hours to post so many comments?  Oh, probably because they aren't actually working.  GET A JOB!  Then get a life.  Lefties are all talk, in Nov you'll see who walks the walk.  Oh, and for once can someone come up with something original?  All this Mc-fill in the blank- name calling is soooo mature.
Republican Voting,

Your credibility got shot at the point regarding the surge.  I'm not a big McCain fan either, but your horrendously incredulous characterization of the surge is laughable.

"The surge started after the Iraqi people had already come together to fight agains Al Queda."  I'm assuming this is a reference to the Sunni Awakening, which did occur one year prior to the surge and did play some factor in the huge turnaround in Iraq. But, though the surge didn't have an effect on the Sunni Awakening, the efforts of our troops gave the Sunnis the opportunity to take up arms against Al Qaeda in the first place.  This uprising was taken into account when the surge was planned, and was part and parcel of our overall plan that has transformed Iraq.

"The only thing the surge helped was to kill a few more American soldiers."  I see.  This is why Moqtada al-Sadr and his Mahdi army have basically given up, the insurgency has been quashed, and the AP just ran an article this weekend claiming that we're winning a war that many thought was lost last year (e.g., Iraqi families are actually going to picnics in Baghdad parks).  And this is why Obama went on Meet the Press this weekend claiming that the surge had exceeded everyone's expectations, including Bush's and Cheney's.

"Besides, Al Queda was not in Iraq before we invaded."  And basically they've been hit hard after they decided to step into the ring with us.

And let's not talk about lying when it comes to Obama.  Please.  To be sure, all politicians lie and flip-flop, but Obama takes it to another level.

What's even more ironic is your endorsement of Romney in '12.  Are you kidding?  This guy takes the cake on flip-flopping and lying.

A call racism. Uppity? Check. Black man, white women? Check. Harold Ford needs to step up right this monute and slam McCain for being a grumpy-evil-old man.
