Obama says McCain is the risky pick

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli

SPRINGFIELD, MO -- Obama returned to the campaign trail today, guns blazing.

Responding to a barrage of attacks in recent weeks, he linked McCain to the Bush economic policies and claimed that it was the Republican nominee who was the “risky” choice in November.

“Nobody thinks that Bush or McCain have a real answer for the challenges we face, so what they are going to try to do is make you scared of me,” he told more than a thousand people at a high school here. "'He's risky' -- that's the argument... It's like, 'Well, we don't have very much to offer but he's risky.' And let me just say, it's true that change, change is hard. Change isn't easy. And the question you have to ask yourself is, 'What's more risky?’”

He added, "We are in a time right now where it is too risky not to change. It is risky to keep on doing what we are doing, to accept the tired status quo."

Obama focused almost exclusively on the economy during his half-hour opening remarks, including the high-energy costs. He challenged the notion that drilling was the answer to the crisis, saying the effort may not have an impact for 10 years, if at all.

“I know gas prices have gone down, it's grand bargain now $3.95,” he said. “Earlier George Bush was on TV talking about his energy plan. Now think about it -- where has Bush been over the last eight years? Where was John McCain over the last 25?”

Answering challenges that he is “Doctor No,” Obama countered that McCain has said no to higher fuel efficiency standards and investing in alternative energy.

“And now suddenly they've got the answer -- we're going to drill for more oil,” he said. “I know it’s tempting. The polls say a majority of Americans say that’s a way we’re going to solve this problem. But it’s not real... We don’t need the same old tired answers. What we need is something new.”

And one day after McCain promised not to raise taxes, Obama signaled he’s willing to have a vigorous debate. Maybe even a duel. “The family legend is that Wild Bill Hickok, he’s a distant cousin of mine,” Obama said, noting an 1865 duel that happened in this town. “We’re going to research that cause I’m ready to duel John McCain on taxes. Right now, right here. I’m a quick draw.”

The McCaskill strategy
Obama is returning to the campaign trail after a more than two-week hiatus, most of it spent on his overseas trip. He chose to come to this part of Missouri -- an area that voted heavily for Bush in 2004 and where he trailed Hillary Clinton in the primary -- as part of what one local report called a Claire McCaskill strategy, to fight for votes everywhere in hopes of cutting into Republican margins.

McCaskill, who won a tight Senate race here in 2006, introduced Obama today, and gave a vigorous defense of him, especially to GOP charges that he’s arrogant and unpatriotic

“They say that he’s arrogant, that he’s unpatriotic,” she said. “Let me tell you -- I know this man. He is humble. He is devoutly Christian. He loves his family more than anything else in the world. He cares about families. He reveres our men and women in uniform. And he is as red, white and blue as you could possibly get.”

Obama needs to consult with oil experts. I've seen some on TV recently debunking the 10 yr myth. In many places offshore, the equipment is in place and ready to go.
Re: McCain being opposed to alternatives, Obama needs to read McCain's Lexington Plan. He needs to listen to McCain's positions.  He is in favor of alternatives as part of a comprehensive energy plan. Obama's plan is for taxing the oil companies which will most certainly drive prices higher and alternatives only. His estimates are being energy independent by 2025. What do we do in the meantime, Mr Obama?  McCain has a plan that has immediate, intermediate and long term answers.

People are accusing McCain of being negative. What was Obama being in this speech?  Listen to the tone. It displays that arrogance people mention and is full of snide remarks.  Not what I want in a president.
Oh sure. On one side we have veteran war hero, in congress for decades, who works very well across the aisle with the opposing party, and has an impressive resume to prove his track record.

On the other side we have someone who hasn't done a thing either as a state or US senator, whose history we know about isn't very reassurring or well known, has close associations with some fairly bizarre and shady characters, and has more questions about himself then he has answers.

So who exactly is the bigger risk here?
I agree 100%  McCain has nothing to offer and at this time when the economy is in the toilet, McCain would be a risky choice....remember bomb bomb bomb Iran?  Let's stay in Iraq forever?  Our military need someone who will secure more benefits for them...McCain voted against giving them benefits...he wanted to force them to serve longer than he served.  McCain is a fraud and he is being exposed.

I like the new toe to toe from Obama....I knew he was smart and focused...lat out your plan, answer your critic and do it in a civil way!  Phew politics can be fun if you are watching Obama...that is what I call having inegrity and class!
To quote one of my favorite movies "... whatever your problems, I can assure you (Sen. McCain) is not the least bit interested in solving them. His only interested is telling you to fear them and telling who to blame for them. That's his tactic and that's how you win elections." McSame's tactics are carbon copied out of the anti-christ Rove's playbook. Be afraid, hate everything that isn't attack mode and vote your fear." America vote your conscience!! Be strong and say enough is enough and GOP your 15 minutes are UP!!!
I too believe he is red, white and blue.  All the hatred wont work with me. I'm ready for CHANGE.  Truly the worst is remaining the same, wanting a more familiar face will only enforce the same by 3x times. McCain really scares me.
Yes!! He's back. Now the McCain camp can stop taking cheap shots while Obama's head is turned.  I would like to see McCain say those same things to Obama's face.  All of those lies they been telling.  It's going to be on now.  All of those negative ads make me want to send Obama even more money.  If they thought Obama's base couldn't get more energized, they haven't seen anything yet.  I want to personally thank McCain and his Karl Rove tactics for energizing me.
I wouldn't really call McCain "risky", because you know exactly what you'll get with him.

Tax breaks for the wealthy.
Tax breaks for big oil companies.
A WAR with Iran.
Diminished relations with other countries.
Increase in poverty.
A failed Social Security program.
Rich Republicans don’t want the poor to vote because some of them might be smart enough to realize that a working person voting for a Republican makes about as much sense as a chicken voting for Colonel Sanders.  They appreciate your vote but in the long run they really don’t have your best interests in mind.
Thank goodness. I'm glad at least one of the candidates can talk about the issues and has strategies and plans to get us out of this current fiasco, vice just doing playground namecalling!
Risk?  Did you say risk?

Here's McCain on a 3 a.m. telephone call ...

Okay.  Let's bomb, bomb, bomb Iran.  Timetable?  No timetable.  Wait.  Timetable pretty good.  No wait.  Never said timetable.  Conditions on the ground.  Yeah, that's the ticket.  Bomb, bomb, bomb.  No wait.  A timetable would be fine if conditions on the ground are okay.  Bomb, bomb, bomb.

Thank heaven this is just a re-enactment.  PLEASE do NOT let this guy try it at home.

Obama/Richardson 08/12
Internal polling for Obama must really be going south if he's trying to make the case that McCain is a risky choice.
Now THAT'S what I talking about. Enough with the frivolous crap coming out of the McStupid camp. Let's get down to brass tacks and talk about what REALLY matters to me and my pocketbook.

Hurray!

Obama/Biden 08/12
I can't wait for the debates.  McClueless is toast.
The 2 comments above were written by the tools of Gondor.
Watch and learn, republikids. You are going to be handed a very hard lesson in November!
an impressive resume to prove his track record.

GT--

Do you want to rethink this one?  This guy's track record is the one of the Gingrich Congress---take from the poor and give to the rich.  Considering he's had things handed to him his entire life (e.g., the son of an admiral slops his way through the Naval Academy finishing near last, ditches his model wife to marry a 24 year old beer heiress, etc), the guy is, at best, an average pol.  His intemperate behavior astounds---ask Chuck Grassley; or, maybe, his own wife.  Bad judgment, bad candidate, bad record.
"And now suddenly they've got the answer -- we're going to drill for more oil,” he said. “I know it’s tempting. The polls say a majority of Americans say that’s a way we’re going to solve this problem. But it’s not real... We don’t need the same old tired answers. What we need is something new.”

Who is the straight talker again?

Senator Obama is the real deal! :)
McCain is the man in the hollow suit, he has nothing to offer but attack Obama on.."nothing"

You Are Thinking About Voting For John McCain...  |
...First ask yourselves these questions:

Did you know that John McCain is Pro-NAFTA?

Did you know that John McCain voted yes on implementing CAFTA (the central american free trade agreement)?

Did you know that John McCain supports free trade with china?

Did you know that John McCain is Pro Death penalty?

Did you know he supports overturning Roe V. Wade?

Did you know that John McCain once sang "Bomb Bomb Iran" publicly to the tune of an old Beach Boys song?
Link

Did you know John McCain voted against establishing a national holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.?

Did you know that he is currently under investigation for violating campaign finance laws?

Do you feel comfortable with the fact that he has openly admitted to not knowing much about the economy or how to fix it?

Did you know that despite being a military veteran himself, he has not signed on to Sen. Jim Webb's veteran bill, which would provide better care and benefits for returning war vets?

Did you know that a fellow republican, Pat Buchanan once said of McCain that "he will make Cheney look like Gandhi"?

Did you know that McCain voted against a bill to ban waterboarding, and then applauded President Bush for vetoing that ban?

Do you feel comfortable with John McCain's endorsement from Mike Huckabee who made an assassination joke about Obama?

Did you know that the Children's Defense Fund rated McCain as the worst senator in Congress for children? McCain voted against the children's health care bill last year, then defended Bush's veto of the bill.

McLame  same as Bush.

John McCain... Electable?

Both candidates should adopt the T. Boone Pickens plan.  Unfortunately for Obama that would mean flip-flopping on drilling.

Be careful about quoting Pickens from his first ad. Check out his recent testimony in front of Sen. Susan Collins of Maine.

Have you heard that the prospects for a successful AIDS vaccine are 10 years off.  Why bother?
Nobama...

You might want to actually READ Obama's plan before laying out your misinformation. And Obama's plan was out FIRST.

http://www.barackobama.com/issues/energy/
Amen!  I have been saying that for a while. Mccain scares me to death!  I don't trust him, I don't believe him, I do believe he loves war and that we will stay in this war and others with him as president.  Not mention, the horrible state of the economy under another republican administration.
Senator Obama says it right!
More and more the argument from McCain supporters seems to be that he's put in so many years of public service that he has earned the right to be president.  The problem is that it doesn't work this way.  The presidency is not a gold watcch that you get at the end of a long career.  Just ask Bob Dole.
To NOobama - please explain why the oil companies are not drilling in the millions of acres that they have leases to drill in?  Why not drill there first and why haven't they already drilled there?  Independent experts say the effect is only a few % of our use of oil that will come out of these new drilling area, so how much will it help the worlds growing need for oil?
Oh sure. On one side we have veteran war hero, in congress for decades, who works very well across the aisle with the opposing party, and has an impressive resume to prove his track record.

And that is just from 2006 until now, much of which he didn't even bother to show up for!  But when he did he sure made it count didn't he?

He voted against Veterans and Military Benefits.  He voted against college funding.  He voted for keeping our troops on longer tours of duty.  He voted against closing corporate tax loop holes.

John McSame - Same as Bush... for the rich and powerful corporate empire.
That's right Senator Obama set the record straight. We know how unglued Senator McCain gets when he has to volley back, and forth with you. He loses is cool. Good. Let the American people see him for what he is.
A Bad Temper-In-Cheif, that is too risky.
Obama is not arrogant.  One of his weaknesses is that he gives the impression that he is.
We've had a lying president for nearly 8 years.  Why we want to elect another one?  McCain is pathological.
New sight to sign a pitition to send Karl Rove to jail.  Huffington Post.

http://sendkarlrovetojail.com/
Yes, yes, yes:  Senator McCain's policies carry the greatest risk for our nation.

"It is risky to keep on doing what we are doing, to accept the tired status quo."

That's what I've been waiting to hear.  Our nation is at war (Iraq, Afghanistan, and the "War on Terror"); our planet is in peril.  Tell it like it is, Barack!
The Rethuglicans and the Bush Crime Family want to destroy the oceans, Alaska and the environment with pushing more use of fossil fuels.   All you have to do is go to any large city in the US and everyone is gagging from all the air pollution.  Just look at all the dirty air we breathe everyday.  The brown dirty air is worse then 2nd hand cigarette smoke.

The oil companies have a strangle hold on the government and its environmental polices.  I choose clean air over lower gas prices any day of the week.

Obama/Biden 08/12
Nobama you have come in here since the primary with you half true statements like you are a scorn lover against Obama. If that is not what you want in a president that is cool. I guess John McCain cant count on your vote then. As far as the 10 years think about this drilling offshore is kin to fishing offshore. First you have to find it , not like if the drill everywhere the drill they are bound to find oil.So the 10 years is not that big off a stretch. Why is the oilman T Boone Pickens not behind that if offshore drilling was so great.By the way when you say arrogant is that not just another way for you to say Uppity N*g*er? That is surely what is being implied by the whole arrogant statement.
But, of course, NObama, it is okay when McCain does it...
GT Tullman - so you're saying it's preferable to continue Bush's economic and energy policies rather than try something new?  Well, that's conservative all right!  Just how deep in the hole do you think we can go?
Let's just say it is pretty bad when you have two nieces that have to come home early from Europe as once discovered they were Amercians they were treated rather rudley and clearly were not welcomed.
C A, Tuscaloosa, AL

Ohhh, plleeeease. This never ending whine of who respects who, and what petty little thing bothers someone else are getting really boring. We are respected by the world, by other countries, and by their leaders. The world is mostly at peace with itself, and is at peace with the US. We trade with other countries with no problems. We have solid diplomatic relations with nearly every country in the world.

Too bad about your nieces, but that seems to be a reflection of company they kept more then anything else. My daughter just toured 5 European countries, and she was well received and had a wonderful time. Maybe it was your nieces attitudes that turned people off?

"He doesn't look like all those other presidents on those dollar bills," Obama said, summarizing what he views as the attacks against him.

This part of the quote was left out of the article.  Just another example of the media cleaning up after this sop.
If you look at the tactics of the McCain camo and the behaviour of McCain himself. They are unstable, they use old style destructive thinking. The Straight Talk Express has become, The Crap Talking Express .
NObama,
You better get use to it, my friend, as Barack Obama will be the next POTUS. McCain is an old, out-of-touch politician that has nothing to offer the American public and this will become more clear as the campaign continues. He is 4 more years of the same and the country just can't afford another 4 years of failed Bush policies. Obama will be a gret president...even for you!
He is so ridiculous.  Does he think that McCain only has one plan for energy and that is drilling?    For all the abuse McCain is taking about being negative, I'm not seeing much different here.
NObama -

Even IF we can get the oil earlier than 10 years or whatever, it doesn't matter because:

- off shore drilling doesn't address our dependence on oil: a finite, expensive, and polluting fuel;

- off shore drilling endangers our coastlines (hurting our environment and the economy of states depending on income from vital tourism);

- off shore drilling may provide some oil, but it is not much, and what the companies get does NOT have to be put on the American market. What obligation do oil companies have to sell it to us, not abroad? (where they can probably make a lot more profit)

Off shore drilling is NOT the answer.  Even T. Boone Pickens, the billionaire Republican says "We can't drill our way out of this one."

Obama is simply right on this one.
No angry old man for President.

- Our allies are all distant from us, which is a threat to our national security.
* McSame doesn't understand this.
- Americans and our troops don't want to continue to pay the bill and carry the burden of hand-holding Iraq forever.
* McSame doesn't understand this.
- The USA can't find the "global WoT" by going it alone.
* McSame doesn't understand this.

I could go on, but you get the picture.
*** McSame just doesn't get it!!! ***

That's why ... Gulf War Vets for Obama!
People are accusing McCain of being negative. What was Obama being in this speech?  Listen to the tone. It displays that arrogance people mention and is full of snide remarks.  Not what I want in a president.

****************************************

We can't. We are tone deaf from listening to you, and McCain carping incessantly. Give it up. We have Nobama narcolepsy.
Ok, RNC staffers, let's see if you paid attention at those economics classes you took in your fancy universities:

What will have a more immediate impact:  Increase in supply 10 years from now or decrease in demand right now?

Give up?

Check the news over the last couple of days - oil prices down 16% without any increased drilling.

Is McRig going to give Obama credit like he balmed him when the price was rising?
NOOBAMA , john Mccain needs to read obama change for america!!! now that the pot calling the kettel black!!! how old are you!! because if you in your 30s in the next 20 years the polor ice cap will be one big lake because of the extra oil john want to pump, pumping more oil will not solve this problem, and for the record, obama is not against off shore oil drilling he is against new leases, now i sure you can read, i said new leased, we have right now enough leased to carrie us for 25 years!!! millions of square miles in MT, off the east cost, and west cost. also since your SOOO close to john mccain please ask him why didn't he vote on the webb GI bill, that was passed. and why hasn't he supported many bill to help the veterans and troops that he is pimping in the media!!! he does not want to give them mental health, long term care, college benifets, you talks soo much about obama, you need to sit down with your guy and get some answers from him, and post them here!!!
if you are a true john mccain supporter, because you are sounding like your stuipd!!!!!
I am so happy that Barack is back on stage now talking to the American people. He really needs to show that Mc Cain has nothing more to offer than critizing Obama. Obama has to defend himself for the false roumors spread by the Mc Cain campaign and hit him for insulting statements. Hopefully the American people but also the media (cnn and Msnbc, too) will recognize that Barack Obama is the one playing fair game in politics and so will be offering change for America and the rest of the world.
I am glad Senator Obama is answering Senator McCain point for point. Senator McCain's negative ads are pure frustration and jealousy. These ads make Senator McCain look small and desperate. I think people will get tired of this tactic.
Nobama:

The oil industry isn't asking to use existing oil producing equiment.  They aren't producing oil where they can, they just want to lock up more land deals while they still can.   Don't buy into the Oil Industrie's hype...in fact, listen to one of their own, an unabashed Republican and oil man:  T. Boone Pickens.  "We can't not drill our way out of this problem".
Building a fan base ( Gay Ole Pedophile's word's)is what the American Electorate commonly refer's to as Voter's. Can You say Penis Envy from the GOP?

Barack has already provided another Smackdown"Oop'z they did it again" to the Mccain camp Ad.

Real Republican's havta be ashamed for this man to be the Best they havta offer against a Highly Intelligent individual like Barack. This is too easy. No amount of attack ad's promoted by Mccain & zealously shown on cable will disconnect American's from the real Problem's facing America & the World.

Donna, i wonder myself if 1st read( all MSM outlets) is Not in Violation of campaign finance laws in thier lopsided showing of Mccain ad's to Barack's.It used to be if one candidate  got Free airtime from TV station's, the other candidates did as well. However, GWB has Owned the Justice system for almost 8 year's now, the Perception has changed about that, but i don't think the Law has.

Delusional Thinking By Common Sense American's Is Over!!!

We all know you are not going to vote for Obama. Why don't you go to Obama's website and read his energy plan. Expand your knowledge.
McLames plan has some good points, as does Obamas. I suspect the real solution is somewhere in between. Just like with most political positions.
If part of our solution in the short term is to drill for more domestic oil then let big oil drill on the millions of acres of leases they already own and have the right to drill on. That is part of Obama's position. Read both plans.

I'm glad to see he's back on the trail with guns blazin. He doesn't demean McSurge. First class all the way. This is my President!
