Obama says McCain is the risky pick

SPRINGFIELD, MO -- Obama returned to the campaign trail today, guns blazing.

Responding to a barrage of attacks in recent weeks, he linked McCain to the Bush economic policies and claimed that it was the Republican nominee who was the “risky” choice in November.

“Nobody thinks that Bush or McCain have a real answer for the challenges we face, so what they are going to try to do is make you scared of me,” he told more than a thousand people at a high school here. "'He's risky' -- that's the argument... It's like, 'Well, we don't have very much to offer but he's risky.' And let me just say, it's true that change, change is hard. Change isn't easy. And the question you have to ask yourself is, 'What's more risky?’”

He added, "We are in a time right now where it is too risky not to change. It is risky to keep on doing what we are doing, to accept the tired status quo."

Obama focused almost exclusively on the economy during his half-hour opening remarks, including the high-energy costs. He challenged the notion that drilling was the answer to the crisis, saying the effort may not have an impact for 10 years, if at all.

“I know gas prices have gone down, it's grand bargain now $3.95,” he said. “Earlier George Bush was on TV talking about his energy plan. Now think about it -- where has Bush been over the last eight years? Where was John McCain over the last 25?”

Answering challenges that he is “Doctor No,” Obama countered that McCain has said no to higher fuel efficiency standards and investing in alternative energy.

“And now suddenly they've got the answer -- we're going to drill for more oil,” he said. “I know it’s tempting. The polls say a majority of Americans say that’s a way we’re going to solve this problem. But it’s not real... We don’t need the same old tired answers. What we need is something new.”

And one day after McCain promised not to raise taxes, Obama signaled he’s willing to have a vigorous debate. Maybe even a duel. “The family legend is that Wild Bill Hickok, he’s a distant cousin of mine,” Obama said, noting an 1865 duel that happened in this town. “We’re going to research that cause I’m ready to duel John McCain on taxes. Right now, right here. I’m a quick draw.”

The McCaskill strategy
Obama is returning to the campaign trail after a more than two-week hiatus, most of it spent on his overseas trip. He chose to come to this part of Missouri -- an area that voted heavily for Bush in 2004 and where he trailed Hillary Clinton in the primary -- as part of what one local report called a Claire McCaskill strategy, to fight for votes everywhere in hopes of cutting into Republican margins.

McCaskill, who won a tight Senate race here in 2006, introduced Obama today, and gave a vigorous defense of him, especially to GOP charges that he’s arrogant and unpatriotic

“They say that he’s arrogant, that he’s unpatriotic,” she said. “Let me tell you -- I know this man. He is humble. He is devoutly Christian. He loves his family more than anything else in the world. He cares about families. He reveres our men and women in uniform. And he is as red, white and blue as you could possibly get.”

McCain being 'risky' is the under statement of the year.  Poor temperment, he has no bloody idea what the hell he's talking about if he's not getting talking points from (oh lawd) Sean 'college dropout' Hannity...this guy is pathetic.  Bush is a screw up and this old timer is just as beholden to big oil as Bush is but is more wreckless.   If McCain wins i'm opening a bomb shelter...and we'll just see what this free-market nimrod's economic plan is really all about.  *rolls eyes*  I'm sure my investment will pay ooodles in dividends.
Exactly GT, McCain has been in Congress for decades, most of which was with a Republican President and a Republican Majority and what have they accomplished?

The risk is more of the same. If you liked the last 8 years, you'll love the next 4 with McCain.
Obama WILL win Missouri in November.

Obama '08
NObama - are you serious? Barack is too smart to listen to anything John McCain as to say.  Get over it.

Anyway - Barack Obama is right as always.

Risky is what John McCain will certainly be - He has no plan - he is a puppet for the continuation of the Neo-Con Plan continue war on the middle class american.

That's why John McCain talks about off shore drilling and at the same time bashes Barack Obama.

Because he has nothing else to talk about.

Risky is exactly what John McCain is - and he's been in politics for a long time and still has no clue what America needs...especially after the mess George Bush has created.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
You know somebody mentioned the fact that John McBush had use teeth whiteners. Then it dawned on me where I had seen him before. John McCain was the gopher in Caddy Shack.
Its about time Obama, needs to drop this inevitable candidacy routine. It didn't work for Hillary. He needs to get back to the campaign and hit back when hit. The American people like someone who's going to fight for them.
Risky like bad whiskey..the Mavwack.  The GOP candidate is not fit for the presidency.  Mentally, physically, tempermentally, & intellectually, he's deficient.  Age isn't even a factor...it's his condition.  The McCain of twenty years ago would not have let his campaign be run so gimpy...this Mr. Hyde version of McCain doesn't even notice.
It is funny how conservation and conservative are polar opposites in the political world. Drill and burn will definitely reduce the cost of fuel while conservation is a personal virtue and has no merit in the conservative solution to high fuel prices.  What is really behind the desire to open up our precious natural resources for more drill and burn practices? More drilling or drilling access is a political myth that can be sold to the conservative voter. We will eventually need to drill and burn if we cannot find a viable solution to the future energy needs. If all access were open to off shore and the ANWR for exploration and drilling, it would be more than ten years before a drop would come to market. The oil companies simply do not have the physical and financial resources to explore, develop and supply oil in less time. Each energy company is already using all of the resources available to find and extract reserves. A 70.00 a barrel price of oil is all the incentive oil companies need. If the issue were purely supply and demand then we would be well supplied at current prices. I have not seen any shortages or people not able to buy gas.
okay, let's try this one more time.

In a just released bush government story, off shore drilling will NOT lead to any reduction in costs at the pump since the soonest the oil could possibly realized is 2030.

between 30 and 50% at the pump cost are due to speculators much like ENRON did with electric costs. at the present time refining capacity is at 98% this is where the drill now theory falls apart. if the oil companies drilled more, it would just mean more oil EXPORTED to china or india.

gas prices are killing my family quite literally. it has overtaken our mortgage per month (around 1200) so i only wish you were correct. the bottom line is regulation is needed to curb the speculative aspects of the market. you could use national security as a reason if it makes you feel better.

counrty before party... we need national healthcare now. any time cost benefit analysis is involved, people suffer. people with real names and real problems.

p.s. thanks for prayers for my friend, responded yesterday afternoon but FR did not post.
I agree with Obama. We have to stop lollyist from running our political campaigns. After McCain was for opening up drilling in Alaska he received 1 million and change from the oil companies for his campaign. Obama says that we have to clean up Main Street befor we clean up Wall Street. Let's face it, the Republicans are for rich people, not the average person making under 250,000 a year. Obama wants to raise the minimum wage and is not for the rich but for the poor. Go Obama.
Challenge to McCain supporters:  Name 5 major pieces of legislation that Sen. McCain sponsored.

25 Years in Congress, it should be easy enough.

McCain as opposed or not voted on issues involving alternative fuels over the last decade.  When we had the chance to act, when Oil was cheap and gas prices were low, the Senator from Arizona, and congress as a whole, ignored Alternative energy.  They said it wasn't needed, but it's needed now.  If we would have invested in Alternative fuels 10 years ago, we'd be seeing those results now.  There is no easy fix to gas prices.  Drilling for more oil will just re-enforce our dependence on oil.  And in 20 years, when we are in the same situation again, we will be scratching are head at why we didn't start developing alternative fuels.
Too risky?  People are afraid of change?  Darn right!  Waiting for the energy fairy is risky to our way of life.  Raising taxes is risky to our lifestyle.  Bringing in rock bands to pump up crowds to stay to hear a speech about nothing is a risky way to run foreign diplomacy.  Making nice with terrorists is a risky way to protect our country.  And giving a spoiled, petulant child the job he wants is risky for our nation and our future.
Stephen Missouri, you a breath of air after the first two. You apparently have done your homework.

Nobama we do not need to drill for oil this country is so addicted to it is like a drug. We need alternative fuels now.
Most people are on the verge of losing everything they have worked hard for. Its easy for McBush to tell us to trust him.  He shows up in a grocery store and we damned well know that as a lifelong military person, he at at the officers mess, and Ms. Cindy sends Carlitta to the supermarket.  They don't care how much things costs.  In June she spent over $750,000 on herself!

I am willing to risk all that I have left to get the GOP out of the White House.  They have had 8 years to screw things up.  That is enough.

McSame is the riskiest choice in my book.
