Repeating fact-checked lines

Posted: Wednesday, July 30, 2008 2:47 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
McCain
and his campaign repeated at least two lines of attack against Obama, which when first said in early July, were called "bogus," "wrong," "inflated" and "misleading" by independent fact checkers.

At his town hall today, McCain repeated that Obama wants to raise taxes on those making as little as $32,000 a year and in his campaign's response to Obama's event in Springfield, Mo., today, repeated that "...Obama’s bad judgment led him to vote in support of higher taxes 94 times...."

Of the $32,000 point, FactCheck.org called that "bogus" and "wrong." "The McCain campaign falsely claims that Obama voted to raise income taxes on individuals earning "as little as $32,000 per year," Fact Check wrote on July 8.

"The resolution Obama voted for would not have increased taxes on any single taxpayer making less than $41,500 per year in total income, or any couple making less than $83,000. The $32,000 figure is approximately the taxable income of a single person making $41,500 per year, after all deductions and exclusions. Obama's vote (for a non-binding budget bill) does not change the fact that his own tax plan would provide a tax cut of $502 for a non-married taxpayer earning $35,000." It also points out that despite the fact check, the Republican National Committee still aired radio ads "in two states repeating the bogus $32,000 figure."

NBC's Ken Strickland wrote at the time, "There was no vote during the budget resolution process to actually raise taxes.  Simply put, there was not a vote which in effect said, "let's raise taxes by 3% on certain tax brackets." So Obama did not vote to raise taxes per se. BUT... the overall budget resolution does assume the BUSH 2001/2003 tax cuts will expire (or have to be offset by new spending.) And if they expire, taxes in the 25, 28, and 33 percent tax brackets would increase 3% as Holtz-Eakin suggests. (Democrats are happy to remind folks that McCain was against those tax cuts, before he was for them.) ...

"While it may be a bit of a stretch to say Obama voted to raise taxes, it is accurate to suggest that Obama's support for the budget resolution indicates a willingness to let the tax cuts expire--thus potentially causing a tax increase."

NBC's Andrea Mitchell pointed out that the Obama campaign "maintains the budget resolution encompassed middle class tax cuts, more than offsetting the lost benefit of the Bush tax cut extensions for lower-income taxpayers."

On the support for higher taxes 94 times, Fact Check titled its post, "Tax Tally Trickery." "The McCain campaign and the Republican National Committee both claim that Obama has voted 94 times 'for higher taxes,'"  We find that their count is padded."

"Twenty-three were for measures that would have produced no tax increase at all; they were against proposed tax cuts. Seven of the votes were in favor of measures that would have lowered taxes for many, while raising them on a relative few, either corporations or affluent individuals. Eleven votes the GOP is counting would have increased taxes on those making more than $1 million a year -- in order to fund programs such as Head Start and school nutrition programs, or veterans’ health care. The GOP sometimes counted two, three and even four votes on the same measure. We found their tally included a total of 17 votes on seven measures, effectively padding their total by 10. The majority of the 94 votes -- 53 of them, including some mentioned above -- were on budget measures, not tax bills, and would not have resulted in any tax change. Four other votes were non-binding motions related to conference report negotiations.

"It's true that most of the votes the GOP counts would either have increased taxes for some, or set budget targets calling for such increases. But by repeating their inflated 94-vote figure, the McCain campaign and the GOP falsely imply that Obama has pushed indiscriminately to raise taxes for nearly everybody. A closer look reveals that he's voted consistently to restore higher tax rates on upper-income taxpayers but not on middle- or low-income workers."

This should be a headline story, NOT in first read.
Why is this not a surprize? McLame and the repukes have no soul and all of us will have to answer for our actions some day. God bless all of you posters and FR and Senator Obama and our great nation.
McCain really is nuts!!!!!!!!!!
When you say something wrong by mistake, its just a mistake. When you know its not factually correct, that would be called, um, what's the word...

Straight talk? No.

Oh yeah. A lie.
McCain's campaign is starting to remind me of Mystery Science Theater 3000; only the movie is good and the commentators aren't funny.
i can see that this fact check will be very busy till november!!! its very Obvious who john mccain is pandering to, the very rich and the very undeucated and poor!!! because he know that in the age of the internet, these things are very easy to check!!!
so he has to do this, track he Opponent with crazy lies hoping no one will pick up on it, well john this is the internet age and every thing will be checked!!
thanks to fact check, it will keep millions of voters well informed!!!
Republicans lying.....huh, imagine that.
usweekly.com go there and read !
When the heck is the MSM going to call out McCain and his people for being flat out liars????  He promised to run a clean campaign and instead is playing dirty and skewing facts and flat out lying every day.  Between the lies and the gaffes, you cannot trust a single word that comes out of McCain's mouth.  I cannot believe anyone is even willing to vote for this guy.
The truth is a mere speed bump for the "straight talk express"
Thank you FR.....well reported....
You forget...

John McCain's a Republican...not one to worry about details!
So who in the MSM is going to nail McSame on this?
This guy's a lying sack of crap!

C'mon, it'll be great, nail him on his repeated lies, he'll start babbling and yelling at the coulds.
It'll get great ratings and you can come up with a great caption!

Or the obvious question: if he supports Veterans so much, why did he oppose the new GI Bill?
Or what about the flip-flop on Afghanistan, or the flip-flop on a 16 month timeline to draw down from Iraq?

This is what voters and Veterans care about -- not Paris and Brittany!
Obama wants to do nothing regarding the cost of fuel in this country. People of all incomes will pay the same higher gas prices at the pump. Obama instead wants to talk about 'alternative energy'. What alternative energy Barack? When it will it be available? Of course, Obama has no answer for that question.

Obama will want to make the country 'Green' at a cost of many billions an possibly trillions to the taxpayers. Not enough 'rich' people around to pay that bill, so people making $32000/yr will also need to kick in some hard earned cash.

Throw nationalized health care on top of the pile, and that's what you have, a pile of bills that the taxpayers of this country will have to pay.
*gasp*  McCain and the Republicans lied?????  Say it ain't so!!!!!

*ok sarcasm over*

Sadly there are idiots out there that are going to believe the Republicans.

Republicans, for eons, have always tried to portray Dems as tax and spend liberals and paint themselves as tax cut conservatives.  Seems the reverse is true in this case.

Obama has come out as the tax CUT (for the poor) and spend it on programs and McCain has come out as the tax CUT (for the rich) and spend it like crazy on crap.

Which would you prefer?  I'm thinking the former because at least I'm getting a tax cut AND there are going to be programs to help those less fortunate than myself.
It doesn't gall me so much that the GOP blatantly lie, it galls me that there are so many who are willing to believe their lies in spite of all evidence to the contrary.
Once, Barack Obama and the Democratic congress take over next year.

They need to legislate to make it illegal, when political rivals bring falsehoods against one or the other.

Our political process and the state of our Union is to important to be minimized by the blatant charades and mischaracterization by parties such as John McCain.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA

The headline is misleading; McCain is actually flat-out lying.

JOE MUST GO!
Here are some facts. Obama is a liberal Democrat. Democrats raise taxes. It's what they do, it's what they live for.
Bottom line is that current goverment budget can not be balanced without a tax increase or budget decrease. Nothing else matters. The next president will inherit a budget nightmare. So somebody needs to straight talk us into a solution. How will the next president balance the budget should be the question.

Go figure.  Republicans making stuff up!

I am shocked.  Gambling in the casino!

What's next?   Britney for VP?

WOW - I can't believe that FR and the media as a whole are FINALLY starting to call McCain out on his atrocius lies.

Oh happy day.

Obama/Biden 08/12
"a closer look reveals"...
they have been doing this for at least thirty years, I do not understand why it is repeatedly treated by reporters as if it had been discovered anew, a fresh puzzle to be deciphered, lo it now be election time, when aggregating votes and twisting the facts about something which should be simple to understand, that Democrats want to raise taxes...on people with lots of money. The people with the money understand this perfectly well, they have been paying for ads like this since I was a young, idealistic party activist in Texas of all places, in the Seventies. It may have started there, for all I know.

H. Ross Perot called this stuff "gorilla dust," after the dirt tossed by gorillas getting ready to fight; and that's a polite term.
Thank you for a no-spin post. Just the facts, and that's all we need.
These guys in the GOP really are a one-trick pony. Even when we're poised to have the largest deficit ever ($490 billion, and that doesn't count the money "borrowed" from Social Security and other trusts), they still are arguing we don't need to worry about fiscal discipline.

They won't consider increasing revenue and McCain ludicrously says we can balance the budget in four years by cutting spending. Okay, senator, what do you plan to cut?

You're crusade against earmarks is like a single raindrop on a lake. Where are you going to make up $490 billion?

Oh, forgot, we aren't supposed to take anything McCain says seriously. He's just McCain being McCain.
We have solid diplomatic relations with nearly every country in the world.  Candice Workman, Lovett SC (Wednesday 2:19 p.m.)

Oh, pleeeassse.  C A and I don't always agree, but I'd take C A's "attitude" over your ignorant and uninformed delusions every day of the week (and twice on Sundays).  If our diplomatic relations are so "solid," then what explains the resurgence of Al Qaeda in Iraq, the failure to achieve any agreement between Israel and the Palestinians, the current unrest in Syria and Turkey, the ongoing mess in Iraq, our "solid" relations with Iran that are about to start yet another war, Afghanistan, Pakistan, renewed terrorism in India, a dying Africa, Tibet, Darfur, Myanmar, and oh, yeah, that Soviet Union thing?

And why did all of those European leaders come running to greet Obama as if he were the Second Coming?

Rock solid.  Right.

As solid as those rocks between George Bush's ears.

We don't need another rock in the White House.  I'd much rather have C A.

Obama/Biden 08
MSNBC:  It is great that you report this here, but shouldn't it also be BIG BIG news that is reported on the front pages and in the headlines.  McCain is making false claims repeatedly, right?  Isn't that a much much higher prioroity to report than Britney Spears campaign ads, etc?
You can feel the momentum swinging to McCain. Obama's supporters thought they had this thing wrapped up after his huge PR stunt overseas. Now that Obama is back, reality has slapped them in the face, and they realize Obama is looking like he's going to lose this election.

Just think, we'll get to see Obama and Hillary running against each other again in 2012. What fun!
I'm glad to be reading this. It should be a headline.

It's really getting old how McCain is not getting hit by the media for all his gaffs and flat out lies. He calls Barack just another politician, but he himself has flipped on EVERYTHING he stood for, in order to win an election. When is the press going to be the wolf and pounce on the liar? Shame on McLiar.
Fact checking McCain.  I can't believe my eyes.  Thanks MSNBC and Andrea.  It's about time somebody started.

." It also points out that despite the fact check, the Republican National Committee still aired radio ads "in two states repeating the bogus $32,000 figure."

That one line says it all.

Will Morning Joe talk about these kind of bogus, wrong, inflated and misleading lines of attack by Senator McCain against Senator Obama. There are enough false claims  pointed out by these independent fact checkers to keep Joe going for three hours. Will he do it? Don't hold your breath.
Thanks for setting the record straight First Read!

Can we get someone (besides Keith Olberman)to say this on TV as well please?
Has there ever been a candidate for this high office who is so 'off'?

Ya wanna give the geezer the benefit of the doubt, but once he's been conclusively proven wrong (on stuff he shouldn't be wrong on in the first place), ya sorta hafta look at:

1.   Is there a memory deficit shorting out his 'wrongness'?
2.   Does he simply not care (my own thought)?
3.   Does he so desperately want to win that he'll say anything?
4.   Is his staff so incompetent that THEY tell him (think Lieberman whispering in ear) that the 'wrong facts' are 'facts'?
5.   Is he so cunning that he wants to deliberately misstate info to get the desired result?
6.    Might he just not be too smart?

Major judgment issues.
Paul Miller - "These guys in the GOP really are a one-trick pony. Even when we're poised to have the largest deficit ever ($490 billion, and that doesn't count the money "borrowed" from Social Security and other trusts), they still are arguing we don't need to worry about fiscal discipline".

Fiscal disipline though is a two sided coin. Haven't seen much cutting going on in Washington lately. So if we're going to have a serious discussion on fiscal disipline, we need to talk about cutting a lot of programs in the same light as raising taxes.
The Obama campaign needs to pound them for this...HARD.  These lies are coming from the supposed "straight talker." McCain at this point will say or do anything to be elected. He mocks Obama because he takes the high road, for which millions of people have shown much apreciation.  Yes Obama is admired around the world - and for good reason.

The McCain campaign is dispicable. These tactics must not prevail (for once).
Is this a surprise?!?!? McCain should be called on this more. Do you think it will be on Morning Joe? Of course not. McCain knows he can say ANYTHING and get away with it. He'll keep on getting away with all his lies. Is this the kind of President you want? We've already had 8 years of smoke and mirrors!
McCain doesn't need to worry about facts because he has the news media to help him out.  MSNBC has already run McCain's latest negative advertisement about 10 times today... oops, make that 11... I just saw it run again.  McCain is on track to be the most negative candidate is recent political history but the media doesn't care.  They just keep on being negative and repeating the Republican attacks.
Domenico Montanaro,

G-D blees you, and all those whom you love for this fact checking.

Senator McCain is flying with his arms out again. What has he learned from his wrecklessnes of so long ago?

He confessed in his book that he fire bombed schools in Viet Nam. The lies he is telling about Senator Obama is the same misbegotten behavior.

McCain has a long reputation from his days in school as a youngster of being a angry, mean, vindictive, and agressive bully.
If our diplomatic relations are so "solid," then what explains the resurgence of Al Qaeda in Iraq, the failure to achieve any agreement between Israel and the Palestinians

<on, and on, and on>

-----------

Obama must be mixing huge batches of kool-aide to be getting person like this in line.

Many of these problems you list have existed for more then 50 years. Are you saying it's Bush's fault that the Palestinians and Israelis have never gotten along? Bush was what, 3, when all that started? Al Qaeda was attacking the US when Clinton was in office. And this is Bush's fault how? And now your worried that there's a few more of them in Iraq?

Take a deep breath, and try to grow up.
Colleen, Ithaca, NY,

There's very little real reporting in the media.  They just repeat the Republican charges and give McCain free airtime for his numerous negative commercials.  McCain knows he can get away with it thanks to his buddies in the media.
McCain signed a confession while a POW. Other American servicemen held captive with him did not.
Colllen Summers, Maryland

Here's a fact, McCain is a right wing Republican. Republicans are incompetent.  McCain is running an incompetent campaign. McCain would run an incompetent administration. It's what right wing Republicans are, its what they do.

Anna Molly (Sent Wednesday, July 30, 2008 3:15 PM)

I have seen you around from time to time in here. This site is not too bad although often times one is not successful in having posted 1/2 of your comments. So much goes unexplained or unanswered. It does not really allow for the free flow of information required on these issues.

But thank you. And forgive an approach in here that was not typical of the CA that you know. I am getting tired and impatient with ignorance and comments based on little other than internal emotional beliefs and comments that have nothing to do with the facts on the ground. I know I should not lose patience but too much is at stake for all of us in the coming months.
Dominic,

Thank you for doing your job.  You (hopefully) are an inspiration to your fellow journalists.

David Miller, Tulsa OK (Sent Wednesday, July 30, 2008 3:27 PM)

Oh David:

You know not who you are dealing with when speaking to Anna Molly so. Be careful or she will take you on and take you apart one item at a time.

In response if I may no one is blaming Bush for problems in the middle east or the rest of the world that have existed for 50 years or more. The issue is what did GWB do to help to make these problems better or did he worsen the climate for potemntial improvement i nthe future. I believe you already know the answer to that. Let me ask you a simple question. How many world leaders do you believe really deep down trust GWB? Let's hear the spin.
Here are some facts. Obama is a liberal Democrat. Democrats raise taxes. It's what they do, it's what they live for.

You are flat out wrong my dear.  Perhaps you need to get a clue.  On Long Island, where I live, it is split by two counties, Nassau and Suffolk.  Both are headed by Democratic County Executives and County Legislaturs.  Yet, they've managed to keep taxes at bay, and cut spending.  Now, bend over and KMA !
"This should be a headline story, NOT in first read"

That would require actual reporting.  They would take heat from the McCain camp so they can't do that. If they hide it hear at FirstRead, the LIV will never hear about it and, after all, that is the group that McCain is going for.  He knows they are the only ones that would vote for him.
