Axelrod responds to McCain TV ad

From NBC's Andrea Mitchell
Obama senior strategist David Axelrod called into the 1:00 pm MSNBC hour to respond to McCain's latest TV ad. Having watched McCain campaign policy adviser Nancy Pfotenhauer defend it, Axelrod called in and said the latest ad is both "sophomoric" and "negative."

VIDEO: NBC's Andrea Mitchell talks with John McCain's policy advisor Nancy Pfotenhauer about a new ad by the Republican presidential candidate that says Barack Obama is the biggest celebrity, but he is not ready to lead.

When asked about the ad's attempt to link Obama with Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, Axelrod replied, "I think the most important reference in the ad was Britney Spears, because as it said in the [Obama campaign] statement, she has that song in a paraphrase 'Oops, he did it again!' Sen. McCain has been criticized in papers all over the country -- Factcheck.org -- for the tactics he has taken in the last several weeks, and the ads that he has run including one that blames Barack Obama for the energy crisis and so on."

He continued, "And in the words of USA Today yesterday, it's baloney! And the thing that is sad about it is that Sen. McCain entered this campaign as someone who was going to elevate the debate and talk about the future, and that is the reputation he had. And instead, we get some very familiar tactics. And it makes you wonder who is running the campaign, who is making the decisions, who is behind all of this. This isn't the John McCain we expect."

When told the McCain campaign's charge that it was the Obama camp who ran the first negative ad of the general election -- which was a response to an RNC TV ad hitting Obama -- Axelrod added: "The real point is we have got serious, serious challenges facing this country, including a genuine energy crisis. And we ought to have a real discussion about it. Instead, we get sophomoric, negative ads that are completely false. There are things in that ad that are fundamentally wrong in terms of what Sen. Obama's position is."

*** UPDATE *** Obama just responded outside of Bell's Restaurant in Lebanon, MO: "You know, I don’t pay attention to John McCain’s ads, although I do notice he doesn’t seem to have anything to say very positive about himself. He seems to only be talking about me... You need to ask John McCain what he’s for and not just what he’s against."

Wait, wait. Is this McMyFaceIsInPain/Cain's attempt to look young and hip? LMAO.  Wow! Britney hasn't been popular since W's 2nd term. And well Paris, really was never all that popular. She was just another new face to look at, when we grew tired of looking at McCain’s. I think his wife could be compared better to Paris than anyone, heiress, bleached blonde, has plenty of beer, attempts to sound intellectual…

OH IT'S ON NOW! This has turned out to be a great day for the Obama Campaign.

Let's get ready to rumble (over issues)!!!!

Obama/Biden 08/12
Mcwar has some mental issues his campaign is slowly, slowing falling apart.  I bet you the Retuglicans and the GOP are sorry they picked him to represent there party.  Maybe they should get someone else before the Septemebr.
What ever happened to the 'Straight Talk Express'  ?

John McCain has morphed into George Bush

John McCain was AGAINST torture before he was for it
John McCain was AGAINST the Bush tax cuts before he was for them
John McCain was AGAINST off shore drilling before he was for it
John McCain was AGAINST a 16 month time table before he waas for it

John McCain was AGAINST dirty campaigning before he was for it

'A respectful campaign' ???

John McCain, More of the same

John McCain, Bush’s 3rd term

John McCain, Endless War

John 'I'll get back to you on that' McCain

Take a nap John; you’ve had a long morning and now you're getting cranky

The Rethuglicans and the Bush Crime Family want to destroy the oceans, Alaska and the environment with pushing more use of fossil fuels.   All you have to do is go to any large city in the US and everyone is gagging from all the air pollution.  Just look at all the dirty air we breathe everyday.  The brown dirty air is worse then 2nd hand cigarette smoke.

The oil companies have a strangle hold on the government and its environmental polices.  I choose clean air over lower gas prices any day of the week.

Obama/Biden 08/12
Bravo Obama campaign!

If John McCain doesn't want to run on the issues, he can't be allowed to get away with blatant LIES and false smears to take their place.

America deserves better.
"Sophomoric and negative." Great descriptors. Could be used to sum up much of McCain's effort thus far, rather than just this Britney ad.

I am sure the ad will run ad nauseum on Fox, for two reasons. One is that its a McCain ad. The other is Fox understands its viewership - much of whom won't admit even to themselves their prurient interests. How else can you explain 15 re-airings of the old Janet Jackson Superbowl boob shot. I'm sure many Fox viewers will feign their repulsion at celebrity while staring at Spears and Hilton all night.
McCain's just a moldy, oldy.
It's too bad that the McCain campaign can't use their candidate's policy positions as material for political advertisements. I would expect someone with his length of national service and political ambitions to have more to say for himself. Maybe I just expect too much from Mr. McCain, even though he does want to be President of the United States.
A new sight to sign a pitition to send Karl Rove to jail.  Huffington Post.

http://sendkarlrovetojail.com/
Lets ask Britney who she likes after all John Mccain did bring it up and the Media only cares what John Mccain thinks and says.  I want to know who Britney Spears would rather have dinner with.
How is it that everyone wants to say "but Obama put out the first negative ad" when it was in direct response to an ad McCain did?

I live in VA and I've only seen ads for Obama on regular TV (introducing himself) and mainly negative ads on cable tv all by "I'm John McCain and I approve this message".  I haven't seen ANY negative ads from Obama.  Maybe I don't watch enough tv *scratching my head*?  All the negative ads I've seen have been on CNN, MSNBC and Headline News.  These same organizations that are supposedly "all Obama, all the time" or "water carriers for Barack Obama".  I see more negative stuff on him and I haven't seen ONE negative thing about McCain that has "I'm Barack Obama and I approve this message" tacked on the end of it (or before it).

Can someone please explain that to me?

I only hear about the negative ads (sans the ones that I have seen) and they are absolutely laughable.  There's one that says he's not a flip flopper but that he "straddles the fence" and that makes him worse...*ROFL*  Anywho...

McCain is full of shit. He went on and on and on about wanting to run a civil campaign. But what do we have now? Nothing but one negative attack after another. He's gone beyond 'spinning' to just outright lying! And its not like he's doing this out of retaliation, because the Obama campaign hasn't even gone negative yet!!! This has gotten worse than even Hillary's campaign.

John McCain should be ashamed of the kind of campaign he's running. Obama is all about the issues. McCain is all about Obama. Sad.
Why didn't he tell us all along that Britney Spears and Paris Hilton are responsible for higher gas prices and my struggle to pay my mortgage.

If only I had known those two were the beginning of the subprime lending crisis, I could have quit blaming McCain's economic advisor, Phil Gramm.
WAIT

So now it's a BAD thing for an American politician to be admired around the world?

What nonsense!

It's all very Rovian: take a strength (gloal popularity) and try to make it a bad thing....these folks disgust me
I never thought I would say this but McCain is nothing more then a Republican Scumbag!!!
David Axelrod, aka Obama's "mini-rove", is a joke.  The thought of that sleazeball anywhere near the White House gives me the creeps.  What a double-talking, race-card playing idiot!
WHY ARE THE MCCAIN ATTACK ADS SO SURPRISING.  WE HAVE LIVED WITH THIS TYPE OF BEHAVIOR FROM THE REPBULICANS FOR YEARS AND THE PAST 7 HAVE SHOWN THAT WE THE PEOPLE WERE SO MISLEAD TO THE TUNE OF A $4.9 BILLION DOLLAR DEFICIT.

THE REPUBLICANS ACKNOWLEDGE THAT WE HAVE A $4.8 BbILLION DOLLAR HISTORICAL, THE ONLY ONE IN HISTORY AND NONE OTHERS EVEN REMOTELY COME CLOSE

JUST HOW DO THEY THINK THIS $4.8 BILLION DEFICIT IS GOING TO GET FIXED?

LET'S SEE WHO RAN UP THIS $4.8 BILLION DEFICIT, AND

WHO CAUSED THE RECESSION?

CHANGE AND ALL THE NEGATIVE ATTACK ADS IN THE WORLD WON'T CHANGE THE FACTS AND ALL THE CHANGING POSITIONS THAT MCCAIN TAKES ON A DAILY BASIS WON'T CHANGE THE FACTS.

YOU KNOW SEN. MCCAIN ON SUNDAY YOU TOLD GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS WHE HE ASKED, "SO THAT MEANS PAYROLL TAXE INCREASES ARE ON THE TABLE AS WELL?

MCCAIN'S REPLY"THERE IS NOTHING OFF THE TABLE."

AFTER EVERY DISHONEST PROMISE, MCCAIN RUNS ADS THE NEXT DAY COVERING HIS TRACKS.

HOWEVER, WE THE PEOPLE HAVE SUPERIOR INTELLECT AND WE ARE MONITORING ALL THESE CHANGES IN POSITIONS WHEN MCCAIN THINKS WE THE PEOPLE ARE NOT PAYING ATTENTION.  WE ARE EVEN WHEN THE MEDIA DOES NOT.

Andrea Mitchell also pointed out this falsehood before Axelrod came on.

Andrea is really calling them out on their trash lately.  I was happy to see that she pointed out the truth about the whole Germany troop saga.

Looks like all that whining worked for McCain he's finally getting the media attention he deserves.

I am one of those who is very disappointed in John McCain.  In 2000, I really liked him, although I'd still have voted Democratic.  Now, I'm wondering if (1) I didn't really know what he stood for or (2) if he has changed.  If it's the latter, I am wondering exactly what the explanation is for that change.  I have my ideas, but regardless, I don't really recognize this version of straight-talk, maverick John...  And with respect to the narrative FR mentioned in First Thoughts, I do think he's gotten cranky.
Oh, I don't think there's really any question about who's running McComplains campaign - all these stupid, negative and WRONG ads started the minute the Rove/Bush team took over.
The only thing worse than these ads is all the free air time the networks give them.
David is on a roll. Big ups to the Obama campaign for calling McSame on his blatant lies. If Obama won't do it, then somebody has to.

Bravo Andrea . . . for now.  You have a lot to make up for.  I really had lost a lot of respect for you during the European tour.  You keep it up I'll stop turning away from you when you appear.

Good hit back Obama!!
I do notice he doesn’t seem to have anything to say very positive about himself. He seems to only be talking about me... You need to ask John McCain what he’s for and not just what he’s against."
----------------------

nuff said.
Capt Smash, you called it. I don't know why the MSM won't. It's obvious Bush wants to make 1 last offering before he goes to Big Oil. The 18 Billion barrels he's talking about will be sold on world markets & go straight into their pockets. The Washington Post called McCain on his flipflop that got him over $1million from Big Oil. MSM burried it.

And these tactics are the best McCain's experience can bring??? I see no honor in it.
Why doesn't MSNBC quit giving the McCain ads free airtime.  That stupid Britney Spears ad has been on about 12 times already today and it's just 3:30pm.
McCain's ad is inane, stupid, insulting (to the voter's intelligence, disrespectful and lacking the integrity with which McCain prides himself.  What a sorrowful sight to see someone I once respected sink so low!
Britney was a Bush supporter, so safe to say she'ld vote McCain.

Also, when oh when is Obama going to counter point these ads with his own ads!  Press conferences, prese releases, and speaches to the choir, will not suffice...he needs to get to the Independent voters and undecideds, who are only hearing false statements from McCain...and you know the old Repuke tactic...say a lie over and over, and people think its the truth.
Breaking news!
Plaintalk Express de-railed due to large inanimate object on track!
Passengers evacuated to leaky Swiftboat. Injuries limited to bruised egos. The large object turned out to be John McCain.

McCain's ad is inane, stupid, insulting (to the voter's intelligence, disrespectful and lacking the integrity with which McCain prides himself.  What a sorrowful sight to see someone I once respected sink so low!
To the editors of First Read: please do not give McCain a pass on this silly ad. there is NO parity between McCain's serious factual errors in the policy area and this ad. His serious factual erros should be addressed (as they are on Countdown), not ignored.
If McCain has substantive true complaints about Obama, fine. Let's talk about them - but not silly comparisons with Paris Hilton. How ridiculous can you get.,
McCain doesn't know who Britney and Paris are. Why didn't he use Doris Day or Liz Taylor?..at least he wud be in the same decade.
If he or anyone on his campaign staff knew how to "Google" he would know who to use.
Who is running their campaign, the "Flintstones"..the "Clampetts"?
If someone told McCain that a "terror attack" was on his "blackberry"...he would go "outside" with a "bowl".
obama's attraction does seemed to be based more on that of a celebrity than admiration of a true leader.

The ad is a good approach, I think.
"You need to ask John McCain what he’s for and not just what he’s against."

******************************

I don't know if the media is too dense to get that, but Senator Obama is telling you to do your jobs.

If Sen. McCain wants to call Positive Ads outlining Sen. Obama's positions and professionally addressing those areas where he and his opponent/McCain disagree, NEGATIVE

well...............................Sen. McCain is running Negative Attack Ads yet he and his Campaign say they are not Negative?

WHAT PLANET DO SEN. MCCAIN AND HIS CAMPAIGN LIVE ON?

APPARENTLY THAT'S THE PROBLEM
Man John McBush is so pathetic if he is not bashing Obama he is singing about His surge. Or how He he he(laughter behind closed doors) supported the Webb GI Bill. Actually McBush is starting to make W look honerable and that is a hard pill to swallow. He doesn't sing about the Mission Accomplished and how we would be getting Oil from the Iraqi's. No John (Maverick) McGump crashed his last plane and now he is having flash backs, caused by the onset of senility.
"....You need to ask John McCain what he's for and not just what he is against."

YES! A man of few words but he just hit the perverbial nail on the head!  Love it!
I am continually appalled at a news source that allows JM free advertisement for his Pathetic, Disgraceful, and Disrespectful ads against Sen. Obama.  MSM is so transparent and I for on am very disappointed in the quality of news coverage of this election.
This is desperation at it's highest, I do want to thank them however for how good Obama looks in the ad and the graphic of the American flags being waved high in Berlin for Obama is a terrific image, they can't even get that right, trying to make him look bad they end up making him look great.

GO OBAMA,FLORIDA LOVES YOU!!!!
David Axelrod, aka Obama's "mini-rove", is a joke.  The thought of that sleazeball anywhere near the White House gives me the creeps.  What a double-talking, race-card playing idiot!
Don - Dayton, OH
********

Nice try...but to anyone that actually half listens to what going on in the campaign knows you are a complete tool.  If you want to try and spread hate and rumors, you are going to have to be more subtle...go ahead, look it up.
How does McCain with all of his "experience" run such a childish campaign?  Each time I go to the gas tank, grocery store, or check the equity on my house or college aid for my sons, I am resentful of the McCain campaign.  I am resentful because America is in crisis and all he chooses to give the American public is playground politics.  That a seniored politican would run a campaign filled with lies, I-told-you-so-s and "he did it first" should be an insult to the American public's intelligence! If it wasn't so disgusting it would be incredulous.
*ROFL @ this*Obama just responded outside of Bell's Restaurant in Lebanon, MO: "You know, I don’t pay attention to John McCain’s ads, although I do notice he doesn’t seem to have anything to say very positive about himself. He seems to only be talking about me... You need to ask John McCain what he’s for and not just what he’s against."

He got the same impression that I did!  McCain NEVER has anything to say about himself and what HE will do and all he talks about is Obama and what Obama will do.  Good way to get the free advertisement though even if it is coming from your opponent.  Yet, McCain always complains that Obama gets all the press.

*pssst Senator McCain and campaign...why don't you try talking up YOUR points on the issues instead?  Or painting YOU in a positive light?  Or telling us what YOU plan on doing? And DON'T mention Obama's name at all while doing any of it*

I was amazed at the succinctness of the following quote from The New Republic.

Why is the Democratic candidate always a flip-flopper?
Post Date Wednesday, August 13, 2008
... every four years, we have a Democratic candidate campaigning on health care, the minimum wage, education, Medicare, or Social Security, and a Republican candidate campaigning on themes like Trust, Courage, and so forth.
The whole article is very short and well worth reading.

Obama 08
When all you hear from McCain is lies and negative remarks - what can we expect if he should be elected?

More lies to the American People - just like Bush!!!!
Have all the grown-ups in the Mccain camp gone on summer vacation and the kids are now running the show
What is with all the women surrogates for the McCain campaign, who look like ditzy blondes and sound even more so?    They go on and on in a robotic sort of way, not making much sense.  Could they be Cindy clones?   The ad is dumb like a lot of things that come out of that campaign.

On a another note, Clara of KC and I believe Ron in Indiana, were asking about Obama volunteering and events.  I am working on the Sen. campaign and have done canvassing and phone bank work along with data entry, he has a great field crew. Very enthusiatic, hardworking and inspiring who have come from across the country.  The turn out of volunteers is fantastic ranging in age from college sophomores to men and women well in their seventies.   For the sceptics out, for an organizational meeting last week, most were white middle aged men and women. Florida is in play and judging from the response we are getting in the hot Summer he should do very well here.
Senator McCain is only pointing out the obvious.
The MSM and axlerove's attempts to bolster the empty suit have become just as mind-numbing as their repetitive coverage of the likes of Spears, Hilton and Anna Nicole Smith.
Obama had a great comeback.  Obama should not combat the negative ads with a negative come back.

Come November McCain will lose Independent and undecided voters if he continues with the negative ads and lies.
