McCain: The Ron Paul danger

Posted: Thursday, July 31, 2008 9:15 AM by Domenico Montanaro

"In the libertarian-leaning West, where Paul's message of distrust of the federal government and ardent individualism played particularly well, there is talk of Republicans straying from McCain," the AP writes. "Libertarian candidate Bob Barr has emerged as a favorite alternative for Paul activists, followed by Constitutional Party candidate Chuck Baldwin. Even if the numbers of such dissenters are small, in tight contests in key Western states they could spoil McCain's chances, experts say."

VIDEO: Just hours after returning from his trip overseas, Barack Obama faced a string of attacks from John McCain, who accused him of calling for a withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq for political gain. NBC's Kevin Corke reports.

At his fundraiser in Kansas City yesterday, McCain talked about Social Security and his opponent’s lack of military service, NBC/NJ’s Adam Aigner-Treworgy points out. "I am opposed to raising taxes,” the Arizona senator said. “Sen. Obama wants to raise your taxes. He wants to raise your taxes and if any negotiation I might have when I go in my position will be that I am opposed to raising taxes, but we have to work together to save Social Security."

And: "What puzzled me was when Sen. Obama announced his policy concerning Iraq before he left, after not having been there in more than 900 days. And he got a briefing from Gen. Petraeus, and Gen. Petraeus told him that his policy of setting a date for withdrawal was dangerous for America. And the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on television, our highest-ranking military officer, said it would be a dangerous course. Now for somebody who's had no military experience whatsoever, I would strongly recommend that Sen. Obama at least listen, at least listen to our military leaders and not devise a policy before you leave."

MoveOn and the Sierra Club will begin airing two new TV ads that hit McCain on the issue of energy. A MoveOn spokesman tells First Read that both ad buys are in the six figures.

MoveOn’s ad features a testimonial from a father: “Sen. McCain, you let me and my kids down. From the very beginning, I told them, 'This is a principled guy.' So when you said you were going to help me drive affordably again, I believed you. And then your idea is to do offshore drilling, which I find out won't produce any oil for 10 years…”

The Sierra Club’s ad: “Big Oil companies have our economy and politics in a choke hold. They are getting billions from the government...raking in record profits...while we pay $4 a gallon for gas. John McCain’s answer? Another $4 billion giveaway to Big Oil.”

Let's send the last joke to the GOP this fall....
I loved Ron Paul.  Too bad he is not running...

THERE IS "NO WAY" I'd vote for McNutCase.

I think I will even make a contribution for the MoveOn Ad that tells the TRUTH about him.
yes the ron paul and bob barr are going to be a problem for mccain unless he get on message!!!
but as a obama supporter i hope he does not, in november if things stay the way there going, rep's are getting in trouble, mccain stays off message with nevative ads, president bush campains for him, and as we see today the violance in iraq is not all goan!!! (pray for troops) this may be a landslide as it was in 1992.
First  ,McCain falls and cant get up! the emergency bracelet no longer works because there is no one to answer the phone! Cindy McCain leaves John because not only cant he lift his arms above his head, but to make a gesture of scatching it, Cindy has to help him.  Cindy finally realizes that she needs change, and dont mind paying more in taxes , as long as she does not have to scratch Johns A double S , and see's the change in Obama
Ron Paul would have been a great candidate.  Hell, he should jump in as another third party guy.  I don't see Barr as inspiring the 'revolutionaries' in quite the same way.

Hey Joseph Scarborough! You forgot to factor in Bob Barr in your Rumplestilkin dance around the 'likely voters poll' on Tuesday! Paaaatttttyyyyy Beeeeeeee! Yoooooouuuuuu eeeeeiiiiittthhhheeeeerrrr!!!!!!!

HA!!!!
I have decided that I will vote not for navy man McCain.  There is something wrong with him and I will vote for Bob Barr for president even though he does not have Huckabee as VP which John McCain will not either.  I am very upset over a hero who is not running a good race and will loose to sissy boy Obama so it's got to be Barr.
Morning Joe needs to be pulled from your morning lineup and sent to FOX where he really fits in!
Move on feeds you hype and you buy into it.  Pay attention. Check out their voting records, ect.  What have they done/accomplished that you liked/did not like. You deserve the govt you get when you elect these people to office.  Which is exactly why the country is in the shape it is in right now.  Like higher taxes? vote for Obama.  Like socialism/facism?  vote for Obama.  Like winning wars instead of losing them?  vote for McCain.  and on and on it goes.  Never vote on emotion.  That can lead to big trouble.  Which is what most of the obama backers are doing.  If you want to live in a communist country, or agree with the hard left and think that govt. needs to tell you what to eat, drink, when to sleep, when you can go shopping ect.  then obama is your man.  On his voting RECORD which is fact, obama voted 94 to raise taxes.  Go to work just so you can pay this atrocious beaurucratic govt more of your hard earned money.  Give em your home.  It's not yours anyway.  Give em your life.  That is how this country is working right now and you can see it.  It's right in front of your face.  Stop and think.  Who runs this country?  YOU do.  YOU are the boss of this country and YOU are the BOSS of govt.  ACT LIKE IT FOR ALL OF OUR SAKES!  Get rid of those in washington who want to tell YOU what to do.  They do not have that right no matter what laws they pass.  It is up to US.  WE are the true owners of this land and I for one am not voting for either one of those weasels.
exxon reports RECORD PROFITS AGAIN while hard working Americans can hardly afford to fill their gas tanks and instead of drilling where oil companies already have drilling leases they just sit on their hands and beg for more leases to NOT  drill on.
I'm not convinced. Third party candidates constantly seem poised to do better than they actually do.

I read once it was conventional wisdom to look at a third party candidate's polling numbers at Labor Day, and then cut that in half, and you'll have a pretty good guess on the amount of votes they'll receive.

Maybe this year will be different, but I'll only believe that after it happens.

New polls discount yesterdays polls on MCsurges numbers, will you repubs now site them in your posts, no.
I saw the Britney/Paris commercial last night on fox, even my dog laughed at the premise.
If you have nothing to offer then just smirk and say anything MCsurge.
Put a sock in it Johnny boy.
If you want a real good symbol of hard work John, then just roll up your sleeves like Georgie does, nothing like rolled up sleeves to signal that you are here to work.
They will go along nicely with your bluejeans.
Perhaps using a hardhat in the north east, a cowboy hat in the west and a baseball cap in the south will show that you will work hard for every american, hats make the man.
On his voting RECORD which is fact, obama voted 94 to raise taxes.

That is NOT a fact and has been debunked quite often now.  It's nothing but a LIE by the RNC... imagine that... the Republicon's lying.
Exon just had record profits again.  SOmething wrong with this picture.  How can smart people like Mccain.  The regular person is going to suffer it he gets is the office.  DO they realize it.  Or is the fact that Barack is black the real reason prople are skeptical.  Barack race should not factor in as it does not determine his ability to lead.
I truly believe that the only reason why Barack has not blown Mccain away is because he is black and it is sad.  Because of his color people would rather bleed from the hands of Mccain , then to vote for Barack.  We as a nation need to grow up and act like adults.
Valeria - the stat you cite about how many times Obama voted to raise taxes is one of the McCain false accusations countered by fact checking, which traces to the new Obama counter-attack ad.

Sorry, but you've been duped by Republican ridiculousness.
McCain and Obama are the same. Just as Democrats and Republicans are the same. Both parties are big government parties. If that is what you want, a government that is all parts of your life, interfering, telling you what to do what not to do then vote Democrat or Republican. Now there is a wasted vote if you truly want change.
McCain's handlers say McCain does not speak for the McCain candidacy on the issues related to increasing social security tax on the upper classes.

If not McCain, then who does?  The tri-lateral commision? Karl Rove?
The CIA?  Please follow up on this one.  Maybe its time his handlers have him tested for incipient Alzheimer's.  What's the deal?
PRESUMPTUOUS = uppity N-word
Why isn't anybody leary about Mccain in having a bunch of "good lobbyist" on his campaing trail is amazing  knowing these "good lobbyist" will claim easy access to anyone in his administration to these so call interest group like Bush did it is not even talk about in MSM
As a parent whose child attended the same school as the Obama children I had the chance to meet the newly elected Senator Obama at a school function.  I met him face to face, he had no security, no advisers, and we chatted as parents.  Arrogance would have been one word that never would have crossed my mind as we spoke.  He was polite, friendly, and he was genuinely interested in what I had to say.  Later, as we passed in the hall, he smiled and gave me a tiny wave.

I believe that the McCain camp, and the media, loves to embrace this notion of arrogance because it's something people who've never met the Senator and who feel threatened by his rapid rise can believe.

I urge Americans to go beyond rhetorical sound bites and slick commercials and learn about the candidates.  Don't be duped by paid image makers who play to their paymasters over their hearts and conscience.
I agree, McCain needs to get on message. Obama says "Change!" and McCain screams "No Change!" McCain does not support the FairTax, he is not conservative. He is not the lesser of two evils. They are two sides of the same power-elite coin. We will stay in Iraq (Iran, Korea, and so on) 100 years with McCain.
I would hope that people on the right have the good sense not to throw their votes away on Barr. No matter what you think of McCain he is the anti-Obama vote, he is the anti-Obama vote, he is the anti-Obama vote! Send the Dems a message on their affirmative action/ diversity candidate! Vote for McCain as the anti-Obama vote which he is!
