Wallace vs. Gibbs

Posted: Thursday, July 31, 2008 11:32 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
On MSNBC's Morning Joe, McCain spokeswoman Nicolle Wallace and Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs passive (and not so passive) aggressively sparred this morning over the "Celeb" ad.

After Wallace defended the campaign calling Obama "fussy" and talked about celebrity, the food fight began:

VIDEO: McCain strategist Nicolle Wallace and Obama adviser Robert Gibbs discuss the newest McCain ad, which labels Obama "The biggest celebrity in the world."

GIBBS: You know the last time I saw Britney Spears on stage with a politician, the guy looked a lot like John McCain, because that's who it was. It was John McCain. ... We'll let them take the low road; it's a place they feel very comfortable in.

On why Obama isn't doing any town halls with McCain, Gibbs insisted Obama camp did offer to do town halls (two as far as we know. McCain's campaign asked for 10. So far, they have done zero together.)

GIBBS: ...We did; we offered... Maybe Nicolle can figure out...

WALLACE [smiling]: We would love that Robert; we would just love that.

GIBBS [laughing]: Well, then you know, maybe you should have Rick dig up the letter we sent, saying we would be glad to do this. ["Rick" is Rick Davis, McCain's campaign manager.] I mean, this is silly. I think this ad is silly. And I think what we have here is very serious times...

Joe Scarborough raised if Gibbs' statement meant that Obama would agree to 10 town hall meetings and sent a letter saying so.

GIBBS: No, we didn't...

WALLACE: Let's nail him down, Joe. We would love this. Yesterday Barack Obama challenged John McCain to a duel and I hope that was code word for the town hall. We don't consider them duels, but we'd love to stand shoulder to shoulder [Gibbs smirking] and talk about these issues. We, as soon as Sen. Obama...

GIBBS: Joe, we're going to talk to voters...

WALLACE [both talking over each other]: ...won the nomination. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt [smiling].

MIKA: Go ahead, Robert.

GIBBS [to Wallace]: No, no go ahead, please. You're the celebrity. Go ahead [laughs].

WALLACE: No, look [smiling]. Oh, God, you know. Listen, you talk about the low road [Gibbs smiling widely]. If we wanted to take the low road, we'd have to ask you to pull over. The first negative attack ad in this campaign came from your campaign [Gibbs in full, rolling laughter, shaking head]. And I think that, when you walk around, talking about knife fights, and challenging the Republican nominee to a duel, you are insulting the American voters, who have serious problems. You talk about serious problems; we have policies and plans to solve serious problems. And the American people want to be inspired -- and not just by words, but by deeds. And I think that's where this real gap is showing up on your side.

Later, when Gibbs was pressed on the town halls first by Wallace and then Scarborough, Wallace said, "Sorry, I'm so excited" as Scarborough asked the question. Gibbs said he couldn't remember how many town halls were offered in the letter, and then blamed the McCain campaign for it not happening.

WALLACE: This is the audacity of spin; this is too much [laughing].

Scarborough then asked Wallace if McCain and the campaign stands by his charge that Obama would rather lose a war to win a campaign. (That's at about 7:50.)

WALLACE: Our position is that he placed a higher premium on doing what needs to be done to win an election than having the judgment necessary to win a war.

And it went on to the end with Scarborough suggesting they call each other and make up.

The Obama campaign did offer to do I believe three town halls and the McCain campaign refused and didn't even come back with another offer. This was right after Obama clinched the nomination.
These ads are just stupid. Besides, the results from this 2008 Vice President Weekly poll Say Everything! You won't believe these results!

Funny how the McCain camp. wants to portrary Obama as out of touch, but yet, McCain uses D-list celebs., like Paris and Brittney, in his latest ad...two has beens who's celeb. status is in the toilet these days.  Clearly, they don't know what's going on in the celeb. world!  Someone give them a clue!  It's all about Hanna Montana right now [although that spark is starting to fade]!
Joe Scarborough is a revolting piece of sub-human trash.  He should be run over by a dump truck, it would vastly improve morning television.
I'm glad that the Obama campaign is pushing back against the LIE that the Obama campaign is "ducking" town halls with John McCain. This is similar to the LIE that was told about flopping on campaign finance.

The key to both of these lies is that the media takes the word of John McCain as the truth every time. Pathetic.
Thanks for the update.  I stopped watching what had become a joke of a show domineered by GOP Joe.   I've switched to Fox and Friends--much more balanced coverage.  I figured that since it was clear MSNBC had decided to try to out-fox Fox, I may as well indulge in the original and not a cheap imitation.
What's professional about calling the other candidate "fussy" -- and what does that mean, anyway? Clearly, McCain needs better surrogates than Nicolle Wallace. When are McCain & his campaign going to get back to the civility that he promised?
You left out Wallace's comments that the ad "celebrated" Obama's celebrity.  That seemed to me to be the most disingenuous remark of all but aligned perfectly with the ad's negative temper.
I can't stand that Joe Scarborough. He is the biggest wind bag on TV right now. He's nothing more than a surrogate for the McCain camp. He is always cutting down Obama and doesn't care if it's true or not. He is one of the big reasons that I'm not watching MSNBC. I'm really tired of their racist coverage.

The McCain campaign is without integrity and honor and to think I used to think that McCain was a good man. Boy was I wrong! He might be even dumber and more evil than Bush!

Joe Scarborough only liked Obama when he didn't think he had a chance and once it looked like that he actually might win - he has been unbelievable in attacking him. That is why I think he is racist - he doesn't mind giving compliments if a black man doesn't have a chance to win but if he could actually win there is no way he will let that happen. And talk about arrogance - Joe Scarborough is the epitomy of arrogance.

Great Political Stuff:

http://www.artwearactivist.com
The McCain rep has no idea what she is talking about. Just like the overseas trip barack is baiting the McCain people about the debates. Just wait Obama will wipe the floor with McCain. He will not get away with those talking points against Obama. Just wait and see !!
This was from Joe Scarborough's show.

Well this whole interview was a joke then - just like JOE.

Who cares what goes on - on that "fox" impersonator continuation show?

Wallace is just as delusional as her boss - John McCain.

Notice how the GOP's always ask a question and then talk over you so you can't answer it.

They are the scum of the earth.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA

----------------

That's what I like about the Obama supporters. They give intelligent and well reasoned responses to the issues, are tolerant of disagreeing view points, and they are civil in their discussions.
Since this didn't make the cutoff on the other topic:

Let me get this straight - if a muscial artist that Senator Obama likes - say ohhhh, Ludacris, says or does something inappropriate, Senator Obama is responsible.

But if a political party, like say oh, the Republican party, of which John McCain has been a MEMBER for over 20 YEARS and has supported in all of their misguided economic and foreign policy positions:

ignores the constitution,
runs the Justice Department like the mafia, illegally spies on American citizens,
lies about the reasons for going to war,
runs up over a 400 TRIILLION dollar deficit,
vetos children's health insurance,
tortures prisoners,
pardons criminals,
and makes the United States of America the laughing stock of the free world

John McCain should then get a pass?

Dear "It's Pretty Simple":

The reason why we watch Moring Joe when we can't stand him is so that we can REFUTE all of the LIES he spreads each morning. You got a problem with that?

Are you Joe?

As a wise woman once said - "If you can't take the heat - WHINE ABOUT IT!" :)

Ludacris is indeed the perfect word for this election.
Actually, McCain is ruining his (false) image
This campaign is showing that he's not a 'straight talker'
He's not running a 'respectful' campaign

It diminished John McCain
It leaves him open to questioning....

Why all the lobbyists in your campign, John ?
Why the silly stunts like a 'gas tax holiday' ?
Why are you changing your positions,
off shore oil drilling ?
a time table for leaving Iraq ?
re-inforcing forces in Afghanistan ?
Bush's unfair tax cuts ?
Taxes are on the table ?

the jilted ex-wife ?
The Keating 5 ?
the Martin Luther King Votes ?
the "Rape Joke" ?
the "maybe this is how we kill-em" 'joke' ?
roughing up aged Strom Thurmond ?

Do you speak for the McCain campaign, John ?
You seem to lack focus

Why should America elect you President ?

What are you core principles ?

I watched this and it reminded me of the old Abbott and Costello "Whose On First" skit.                Advantage: Gibbs.
This Nicolle Wallace is the same woman who lied to the public repeatedly in the service of Bush.  Do a Google search on any of McCain's close cohorts and you will find a swamp of slime.  McCain has steadily recruited all of the Bush/Rove acolytes and from his recent campaigning we can see that the so-called "Maverick" is no more.  There is a risky choice and that choice is Sen. McCain.  Look at his atrocious campaign.  This is what his cabinet and a McCain Administration would look like.  A lot like Bush and even more disorganized and incompetent.  Americans deserve better but we will get what we deserve if people are scared into voting for the inferior candidate again.  There are no penalties for McCain's constant lies and gimmicks because the he and the corporate media are on the same team.  If you take a step back, there is not one area where Sen. McCain excels over Sen. Obama.  Just being old doesn't make one an expert.  Has anyone wondered how it took until the middle of 2008 for Sen. McCain to even feign an interest in learning about computers or the internet?  For his close to 30 years in Washington don't you think that he should have learned one thing about the economy?  People behave like the McCain camp when they're losing.  He's only going to get nastier in the coming weeks.  We've had a President with no intellectual curiosity and average to below-average intelligence and it doesn't work.  Let's get someone in there who can do the job this time.  Obama '08

and yes we will turn FL blue this year!
This was from Joe Scarborough's show.

I guess I just don't understand people. That must be it. How, on earth, can McCain be GAINING on Obama in the polls? WHAT are people thinking? WHAT does McCain have to offer the country? Don't people see him as the old, out of touch, nothing to offer fool the rest of us do? I don't get it.
Then, for those of you bloggers who complain EVERYDAY about MSNBC news coverage......again, I have to ask......WHY DO YOU WATCH? If you find them offensive, NOT fair and balanced, then WHY waste your time? I agree, Joe is sophomorpic, opinionated, crude, rude to Mika (who sets woman BACK 100 years by putting up with this moron) and Pat Buchannen is a racist, David Gregory just likes to hear himself talk and Chris Matthews should always be alone since he interrupts every guest he's ever had on! So why not turn them off? I did months ago and I've got to say I'm not nearly as angry as I use to be about them. I get angry, however, when I think that most people who "think" they are getting news and BELIEVE the garbage the networks are spewing forth are the ones who will probably sway the upcoming election and might even elect John McCain even though he'd be toxic to the country. Afterall, these are the same idiots that elected Bush TWICE and think Regean was a great President. By the way, WHERE are all the people that elected Bush now? Why aren't they here saying how wonderful he is and how wonderful McCain would be to follow in his footsteps??
Seems to me they are just like Hillary supporters.....GONE, now that she needs their money to pay off her campaign debt! Support her by sending a few bucks, would ya? Suppose to be 18 million of you out there. I don't know. It makes me sad to think that there are more low information voters out there than there are people to actually give a damn and the low information voters seem to out number the rest of us (case in point...Bush x 2). I guess I just don't understand people.
McCain's campaign = trash

All they do is argue, fight, LIE, smear, run negative attack ads and flip-flop on every issue.

Obama '08
What this all boils down to is that McSame dared Obama to go to the Mideast and Obama did just that, and the McSame camp hasn't stopped whinning since.  They are right McSame doesn't have any real issue so trying slinging mud at the new guy on the block.
The McCain campaign is truly in disarray. How do we expect him to run the country? They are lost and becoming childish and desperate. So sad.
Harrier, that's a little strong.
But, I've stopped watching Morning Joe because the biasness against one candidate is just too much to bear.  I mean, we get Rush, then Hannity through the afternoon.  Do I have to start the morning listening to the same stuff?

Having said that, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are the celebrities.  In fact, it might have worked had Senator McCain used them, or at least her, since they just were in France having a baby.

Bottom line though, the more you see of McCain's ads, the more lies you see and the less he's going to be able to back away from them.

In a way, I think Senator Obama's team is smart to push back on the town halls.  Because at some point, a compilation of all the lies that McCain is telling will be put out and he'll then have to defend all of those as opposed to trying to get his message out (whatever that is, for I still don't know what he stands for.  I only know that he is against Obama.)
Joe S. is awesome, he is needed to balance Mika.

I would think all you Joe haters would find Tucker's frequent remarks about Obama as the Messiah and a replica of Bush 2000 to be far more offensive than anything Joe says.

What is wrong with a little balance...a show that is positive Obama all the time would get boring and lack real credibility. Moreover, if you hate him, just change the channel!

john mccain = smilin bob from the enzyte commercials!
I turned on the TV the other morning and was listening from another room. I though I had accidentally turned on Faux News, but when I went to look, it was Morning Joe.

Joe sure is quick to start to spew GOP talking points when the election starts to get close.

Good thing McCain and his sycophantic talk show hosts like Scarborough are so strikingly incoherent this election cycle.
Like the latest trip overseas, McCain will rue the day he pushed for a "town hall" meeting with Obama.
I find the latest allegation from the McCain camp ridiculous...the media will let this election by without discussing the real core issues before our generation... http://www.enewsreference.wordpress.com
Please-if anyone is to believe that Obama agreed to any joint town halls, they really are drinking the kool aid.  One of Obama's favorite lines (along with 'he's not the person I knew') is 'I'm happy to have that debate with John McCain.'  I've heard him say it numerous times on at least 3 different subjects.  But he really ISN'T happy to have that debate, because every time the challenge is offered he runs from it.
What an obnoxious prick that Wallace chick was.  However, I will say that Gibbs did look quite pansy-like in comparison.

I would like to see the town halls, but neither side has a right to say "meet me here! Now!".  Just like the debates, it must be mutually agreed upon.  Obama's "duel" comment was kind of dumb.

(I cringe even writing this because the trolls will take these words and twist them around, but it is what I think.)

The entire McCain campaign reminds me of schoolyard bullies.  I didn't like them then, and I sure as hell hate them now.  This "I know you are but what am I?" campaigning needs to stop.
McCain is so envious and now even believes that if Obama was to campaign with him, he could psychologically revive his camapaign...why should Obama volunteer his magnetic personality for McCain?

All McCain wants is to at least share the spotlight with Obama...hoping that people may turn his way.  He knows he is attracting smaller crowds and now he wants Obama to bail him out...why?  Can't he stand on his own?

The only way we will defeat McCain and his Repubs is to turn out and vote, recruit new vvoters who have open minds...so do not forget to go that extra mile and turn out the vote.  Let's shame the politics of shame and division.

Rachel Maddow was fantastic...she took on the mighty Buchanan and shamed him for his racist politics.  She took him toe to toe...go Rachel.
Insanity--Doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result--Albert Einstein. I'm not going insane, so I stopped watching Joe, and Pat and Tucker.
John McCain was shot down in Viet Nam by a SAM (surface to air Missile)  This time he is shooting himself down by engaging in a negative campaign. If he "stays the course" he will not recover. Bush could go negative (twice) but not this time.  Just another way McCain is like Bush. This election will be a referendum on McCain/Bush, not Obama
And it went on to the end with Scarborough suggesting they call each other and make up.

**********************   - First Read

I did myself some good, and did not tune into 'Joe' this morning. I am proud of Mika for her attempt to moderate fairly, unlike Scarborough who is out of his mind with party humiliation, and personal jealousy.

Joe's insincere suggestion to 'make up', when he is one of the major players in instigating the ill will, is just like Jerry Springer's feigned 'moralizing' at the end of each show. (No I don't watch Springer. When regulary visiting a loved one in the hospital, it was on in their room).

I am a strong Obama supporter; however, Mr. Gibbs has to improve his sparing skills.  He got caught off guard when he talked about "The Town Hall Letter".  He did not know the details when pressed by Joe. It seems to me, that the Obama folks are never fully prepared to defend the difficult questions; which are completely predictable.  I am affraid that Obama is in cruise control until the convention while McSame beats him about the head and face.  Let's get in the game folks; the election is not a done deal!

FR - instead of blocking people with actually viewpoints to share, how about blocking those who are using your site for free commercial space!  I'm not interested in your blogs, Obama stuff, or crummy poll sites.
Yea Harrier in Waco, I couldn't agree more, when Joe isn't on there, I enjoy the show MUCH more....get rid of the pompus ass!
I missed it so I can't comment on this segment.

However, I'd like to say that I always liked Joe Scarborough and Mika. But I truly believe that if Senator Obama loses this election, it will be because of the Reverend Wright controversy.

Senator Obama is not some empty suit. Anyone who listens to him can see that. Yet he's been treated horribly by people who never had to fight for a thing.  It's one thing for the McCain campaign to go after him - it's quite another for the commentators to assume Senator Obama is another Reverend Wright.

Journalism used to be about integrity and honesty.

Now it's about ratings.

If Joe Scarborough can fight Newt Gingrich, then there's hope. But I'm not so sure. He has Pat Buchanan on; the same Pat Buchanan who worked for a president who wanted to blow up the Brookings Institute.

MSNBC needs to git rid of the likes of Tucker Carlson , Morning Joe and Fat Cat Pat. Pat with his statements about Obama needing to know his place and telling that young black female reporter to shut up during the primaries is showing his true colors. Actually Morning Joe is bad but not as bad as the other two clowns. Tucker Carlson is a very arrogant prick , he reminds me of one of Andrew McCarthy's bad acting jobs of the 80's. Plus the fact that he is involved with that anti-Obama video trash piece.
I know everybody wants to see those townhall meetings. However, think about it...the longer Obama waits 1) the more past statements McCain will have to try to remember 2)the less energy he will have and 3)the more "pissed off" he will be. McCain...time is NOT  on your side.
Why don't you list all of the times JS interrupted Gibbs? It was pathetic! I will never watch any of you guys again- and MSNBC can thank Joe and whiny Mika for that!
Why are any of these people paid to do this? I can no longer watch this type of reporting. Two so call experts or representives debating with commentator escalating the nonsensical debate. What a waste of time and energy.
Joe is a wannabe anyway. He did nothing as a congressman in his few years there and now acts like he has any clue what the hell he is talking about. Now he has this pathetic show with no valuable information to come from it but tabloid journalism. Truly pathetic.
Joe Scarbrough is revolting.  I enjoy the show much more when he's not there.  He's too pompus for his own good, get rid of him.
i switch to espn whenever buchanan or scarborough is on any show on msnbc.
have had more than enough of those two.
i know i might miss someone else say something i'd be interested in, but, hey...i like sports too.
I've had Morning Joe off my radar for at least 8 months now...never watch it because I got sick of the blowhard and egomaniac Joe S. talking over the guest and Mika. Joe and Pat Buchanan bring nothing but the same old partisan attitudes that helped to usher in the "Worst President in American History". We deserve sooooo much better than the Scarborough's and Buchanan's of the world. I remember Joe being a senator during the 90's and he certainly towed the party line then, just like he's doing now. Sad.
Isn't it time for these children on both sides to start acting like adults and addressing the issues?  My lord, if my grandchildren acted this childish I could understand it and would simply send them outside for a "time out".
Yes, I've turned off Mornning Joe as well.  It's devolved into a sort of Today Show for obnoxious frat boys (with the token ditsy sorority sister Mika there to occasionally inject her two cents, only to be patted on the head becuase its cute when she gets uppity)
I'll just watch the real Today Show - I could use some new recipes.
Why town halls? Why won't McCain agree to 10 stand up debates with various news media persoanlities asking questions. Why, because Mccain looks like a chump in such debates and would have a hard time with the questions. Most likely leading to him losing his temper.

If the Mccain camp thinks Mccain does better in town hall style meetings they are fooling themselves. While Mccain would try and crack those stupid jokes he so often loses the audience on Obama would answer the audiences questions.

Go for it Obama. Meet McCain in his stupid town hall meetings. You'll rip him apart. Just be siure that the McCain camp does not overload the audience with right wing neo-cons which is what they wanted to do when first challenging Obama to town hall style meetings. The McCain camp wanted control of when, where and who would attend. No wonder Obama has been hesitant.

It's time to put aside surrogates like Gibbs for Obama, name Biden his VP running mate and let Biden go head to head with some of these McCain surrogates. He would eat their lunch, as well as Scarboroughs.
"WALLACE: Let's nail him down, Joe."

Does this concern you? I mean, that a campaign advocate expects the host to help her pile on the opposition?
The Gay Ole Party is grasping at straws as they try to convince voter's that McCain is the one to lead us forward.Thier whole strategy was based on Hillary being the nominee, when that did'nt materilize, they were left starting over from Nothing.I think it was Schidmt who was sent(by karl rove) to Arkansas to hoard up evidence on Hillary for over a year. Now that Barack is the Presumptive Nominee, Panic has set in.

Barack is a very Intelligent man with good Morals, who has taken the Political discussion to a level Not seen before in Presidential Politic's.

Now for all of you who still call voter's in WV,KY, etc, low info voter's, you've no idea what you're talking about. We live a different kinda life as compared to City life, but we still are able to get all the cable news we can absorb.Being a Barack supporter from the very beginning, i've been witness to alota outraegous comment's. Standing my ground in rural Kentucky is'nt very hard either. We've all been highly disappointed in GWB around here, however, they're are Very Deep rooted biases against the African American society(not myself)that will take longer to overcome than it should.Even tho folk's don't like Mccain or whatever it is that he supposedly stand's for, he's a person thier comfortable with. I try & will continue to try & help Barack from my little neck of the wood's & i hope that voter's see the Stark differences between the two Nominee's.

If you're life is better off than it was before GWB, then by all mean's Vote for Mccain.

If your fed up with $4 gallon gas, $4 gallon Milk, same as with All grocery item's that you & i havta have(outraegously High), Vote for Barack Obama.

I am & I know i've personally changed a few minds around here in Rural Kentucky(nearest neighbor is a half a mile away).

Delusional Thinking By Common Sense American's Is Over!!!!
The media is really in the trash. All they do is rerun campaign ads by the candidates and then talk about it. And they call this journalism. The truth is its tabloid journalism and you get the same from reading the “National Enquirer’.  It really is sad to see how far American Journalism has fallen.
