Wallace vs. Gibbs

Posted: Thursday, July 31, 2008 11:32 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
On MSNBC's Morning Joe, McCain spokeswoman Nicolle Wallace and Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs passive (and not so passive) aggressively sparred this morning over the "Celeb" ad.

After Wallace defended the campaign calling Obama "fussy" and talked about celebrity, the food fight began:

VIDEO: McCain strategist Nicolle Wallace and Obama adviser Robert Gibbs discuss the newest McCain ad, which labels Obama "The biggest celebrity in the world."

GIBBS: You know the last time I saw Britney Spears on stage with a politician, the guy looked a lot like John McCain, because that's who it was. It was John McCain. ... We'll let them take the low road; it's a place they feel very comfortable in.

On why Obama isn't doing any town halls with McCain, Gibbs insisted Obama camp did offer to do town halls (two as far as we know. McCain's campaign asked for 10. So far, they have done zero together.)

GIBBS: ...We did; we offered... Maybe Nicolle can figure out...

WALLACE [smiling]: We would love that Robert; we would just love that.

GIBBS [laughing]: Well, then you know, maybe you should have Rick dig up the letter we sent, saying we would be glad to do this. ["Rick" is Rick Davis, McCain's campaign manager.] I mean, this is silly. I think this ad is silly. And I think what we have here is very serious times...

Joe Scarborough raised if Gibbs' statement meant that Obama would agree to 10 town hall meetings and sent a letter saying so.

GIBBS: No, we didn't...

WALLACE: Let's nail him down, Joe. We would love this. Yesterday Barack Obama challenged John McCain to a duel and I hope that was code word for the town hall. We don't consider them duels, but we'd love to stand shoulder to shoulder [Gibbs smirking] and talk about these issues. We, as soon as Sen. Obama...

GIBBS: Joe, we're going to talk to voters...

WALLACE [both talking over each other]: ...won the nomination. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt [smiling].

MIKA: Go ahead, Robert.

GIBBS [to Wallace]: No, no go ahead, please. You're the celebrity. Go ahead [laughs].

WALLACE: No, look [smiling]. Oh, God, you know. Listen, you talk about the low road [Gibbs smiling widely]. If we wanted to take the low road, we'd have to ask you to pull over. The first negative attack ad in this campaign came from your campaign [Gibbs in full, rolling laughter, shaking head]. And I think that, when you walk around, talking about knife fights, and challenging the Republican nominee to a duel, you are insulting the American voters, who have serious problems. You talk about serious problems; we have policies and plans to solve serious problems. And the American people want to be inspired -- and not just by words, but by deeds. And I think that's where this real gap is showing up on your side.

Later, when Gibbs was pressed on the town halls first by Wallace and then Scarborough, Wallace said, "Sorry, I'm so excited" as Scarborough asked the question. Gibbs said he couldn't remember how many town halls were offered in the letter, and then blamed the McCain campaign for it not happening.

WALLACE: This is the audacity of spin; this is too much [laughing].

Scarborough then asked Wallace if McCain and the campaign stands by his charge that Obama would rather lose a war to win a campaign. (That's at about 7:50.)

WALLACE: Our position is that he placed a higher premium on doing what needs to be done to win an election than having the judgment necessary to win a war.

And it went on to the end with Scarborough suggesting they call each other and make up.

No one who has any intelligence watches "Morning Joe".  I do realize that FR references that show to try to get the numbers up, but really, one can only take so much sophomoric ranting.

We MAY return to MSNBC morning programming when you get adults to anchor that show.  Until then, it is Don Imus, or saddling up my horse.  She is smarter than "Morning Joe".
More of nothing from the MCsurge people, seems like everyone is having a lot of fun except the american people.
Entertaining-no
loss of respect for the media and the MCSurge campaign-undoutedly
I watched the video, and Joe S. is just pitiful. He lets McCain's gal give her full answers, but steamrolls Robert Gibbs. It's a nasty, biased pattern, and I think it's shameful. Good for Robert injecting his points WHEN he was ALLOWED to speak. Toss Joe S. to FOX and be done with it.

McCain's campaign is a joke, and they ARE taking the low road--sorry, sister, but the only ones who would have to "move over" to let you pass on that low road would be the Republican snakes already there ahead of you.

My mom always advised me to be careful what you pray for, because you just might get it. If little Miss Smart Arse wants McCain & Obama to be seen together in town halls or debates...whichever format...and she will, soon...she will rue the day.

Obama will lay a verbal smackdown on McCain like he's never seen, and the image of the two side by side is a winning argument (for Obama) in and of itself.

BRING IT ON!

Obama '08/'12
The key to both of these lies is that the media takes the word of John McCain as the truth every time. Pathetic.

Yo Nashville think about who's pockets will be affected by the Change that is coming. O'Reilly that dirt bag that he is admitted that fact. It's funny how the media has been used in the divisive politics of the right wing  attack and propaganda machines. The helped W win and they helped them lie us into Iraq. Right now there are not that many reporters that I expect the truth from any more. Their are a few Keith Olberman and Rachel Maddow. I even like Dan Abrams even though even he is opinion driven at times.
I agree with the Anti-Joe/Mika comments. I'm a diehard MSNBC fan but quit watching in the morning because I was sure I was watching a mean version of Fox and Friends (the dumb version).  I just turn the weather channel on now. Willy was pretty cools but not worth waiting through Mika's redundant comments and Joe's whiney supperiority.  Made me angry and I don't like to start the day that way so I stopped.
Ah the dangers of cut and paste - my apologies for the garbled ending of that last post - I guess I'm "ludacris" too! :)
Something is better than nothing. McCain should have accepted Obama's offer of two-three (?) town halls, even though the offer was less town halls than McCain wanted.

Actually, this gives us a clue as to the kind of president McCain would be--all or nothing. No compromise. My way or the highway.

That's not the kind of president I want.
Repeat of 2004...the GOP has a track record to hide, and no solid ideas about how to change or improve the Bush disaster, so they launch the personal attacks in full barrage.. little surprised that McCain would buy into this..thought he had a little integrity, but I guess not.  Obama, stay on the high road, as you have been doing.  If a white man exhibited your "arrogance", it would be called confidence....surely good AMericans will finally reject this form of personal attacks, and recognize a "class act" when they see one.
I can't handle Joe "Squints" Scarborough anymore. I TRIED to try to watch it this morning, but I would rather watch babies being delivered on Discovery Health Channel. He's been an egomaniac ever since he got a morning show. Scarborough country wasn't so bad, but this show is BAD
