McCain says he's 'proud' of new TV ad

RACINE, WI -- McCain was just asked at his town hall here about his controversial TV ad comparing Obama to Britney Spears and Paris Hilton.

"All I can say is that we are proud of that commercial," he answered. "We think Americans need to know that I believe that we should base this campaign on what we can do for Americans here at home and how we can make America safe and prosperous. And that is the theme of our campaign."

*** UPDATE *** NBC's Lauren Appelbaum provides the full exchange:
Woman asking question: "First of all, Sen. McCain, I want to commend you on your service for our country. But earlier this year in April, you made comments about the mudslinging and how it had been affecting the other campaigns and how you didn't want to do that. But recently, especially last week when Obama went to Europe, it seems like there were a lot of campaign ads that you put out that were doing that. And the one yesterday comparing him to Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, I was like, "OK." So it seems like to Americans like me and other people that you may have flip-flopped on what you said earlier. And what is your response to that?"

McCain: "First of all, let me say there are differences, and we are drawing those differences. And I said earlier, I admire his campaign. But what we are talking about here is substance and not style. And what we are talking about is who has an agenda for the future of America."

"Campaigns are tough," he added, "but I'm proud of the campaign that we have run. I'm proud of the issues that we have been trying to address with the American people. And again, I would hope that Sen. Obama would join me so we could discuss this as he said he wanted to quote duel over taxes, I believe yesterday. So, all I can say is that we are proud of that commercial. We think Americans need to know that I believe that we should base this campaign on what we can do for Americans here at home and how we can make America safe and prosperous. And that is the theme of our campaign."

What else do you need to know about the McShame Camp.

...Sen. Joe Lieberman took a different tack, saying the ad simply compares the two candidates in a "creative" way and people should lighten up. "To some extent the appearance of Paris Hilton and Britney Spears -- people complain about it -- they should just relax and enjoy it," he said.

This sounds an awful lot like a quote by Clayton  Williams, who ran for governor of Texas in the 1990. His quote--regarding rape--was: "If it's inevitable, just relax and enjoy it." Disgusting.

Now I read that this same Clayton Williams has raised over $300,000 for John McCain's campaign:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clayton_Williams

So we're supposed to "enjoy" another campaign slamming our candidate for his popularity around the world?  Strange, twisted logic.
"We think Americans need to know that I believe that we should base this campaign on what we can do for Americans here at home and how we can make America safe and prosperous. And that is the theme of our campaign."

So how is attacking Obama telling us what you'll do to make us safe and prosperous? Won't work this time, guys.
He should be. The left never could stand the light of day.
Umm... Has the good senator from the State of Arizona actually seen the ad in question? 'Cause his response leads me to believe he hasn't.

At this point, I don't think it's inappropriate to wonder if McCain even KNOWS what in the heck is going on with his campaign.
I am appalled, but not surprised, that this was the next step in the McCain Camp bag of tricks. It was inevitable and we all knew it, as soon as McCain took on Rove acolytes to run his campaign.

Anyone remember this comment from Cindy McCain?

McCAIN: And what you're going to see is–I believe, we're going to see a great debate, which the American public deserves, more importantly. None of this negative stuff, though. You won't see it come out of our side at all, because…

Curry: None of the negative stuff will come out of your side?

McCAIN: My husband is absolutely opposed to any negative campaigning at all.

Seems like a lifetime ago doesn't it?
old man screams at cloud!
Proud of ad? Yes, this is real presidential material.

Senator McCain, let us know when you want to talk about something really important. Like your voting record in Congress for the last 25 years. IN YOUR OWN WORDS. And please, be specific.
"All I can say is that we are proud of that commercial," he answered. "We think Americans need to know that I believe that we should base this campaign on what we can do for Americans here at home and how we can make America safe and prosperous. And that is the theme of our campaign."

Then start doing so and quit these BS ads!
The only problem J. Mac is that your commercial tells us nothing about what you think we should do at home to make us safe and prosperous.  Let's see . . . one candidate spends week tackling the details of our economic crisis and the other spends week talking about Britney Spears.  Hmmmm who should I take seriously?  Who is acting like they could be the next president of the U.S.?
"We think Americans need to know that I believe that we should base..."

Good lord what a bunch of nonsense.

I doubt he's even seen the ad.

Obama '08
And so how does the ad address being safe and prosperous?
Did he see his own commercial?  It wasn't about what he would do for America.
What would John McCain 2000 think of John McCain 2008?
McCain is proud of that tabloid-like ad?  He has truly sacrificed his principles--if he had any to begin with.

Just another nail in the coffin of his political campaign!
"We think Americans need to know that I believe that we should base this campaign on what we can do for Americans here at home and how we can make America safe and prosperous. And that is the theme of our campaign."

41 words and not a single one was surge!!

Congratulations.
McCain said Obama is playing the race card!

McWar plays the Depends Card!

Plays the Albino Chipmunk Card!

Plays the Face Cancer Card!

Plays the AARP Card!

Plays the Irainan Kill Them All Card!

Plays the Old White Men Use to Own Black People Card!
What a surprise.....really really....I didn't think so!

"Straight Doper Express"
Yes, and that ad gets right to the heart of what John McCain said. Oh, wait a minute, where was the part of the ad about making America safe and prosperous?

Not only is McCain sinking into Rove-ville. He's bad at it.
McCain's theme is about the Iraq war for heavens sake...He has no idea how to work to help the American people...a few months ago he said he had no experience with the economic policies of our nation - and he thinks HE would be a great leader??? Give me a break! I can say more, especially about the idiotic ad...but what good would it do...
I cannot believe the "Straight Talk Express" has stooped to these levels of nasty attack.  Here we go again with "Swiftboating" the Democratic candidate.  Why can't Republicans talk about their own solutions to America's problems without slamming the other candidate with lying and ridiculing ads?  I hope that Americans are SICK of this kind of campaigning and CHANGE this!!!
Has he seen the new ad?  Because, if he has, what he apparently thinks that what we should do for Americans at home is to go negative and attack everyone else? Makes no sense.
McCain graduated 894th out of 899 at Annapolis.

GIBBS on Morning Joe: "You know the last time I saw Britney Spears on stage with a politician, the guy looked a lot like John McCain, because that's who it was. It was John McCain."

"We desperately need a president who's smarter than the average American. And we desperately need a media willing to report the truth about candidates without trying to spin the story against them in a way that badly distorts reality". (John K Wilson – Huffington Post)
Obama graduated from law school, and then became a street organizer. Next he won a seat in the Illinois senate and voted 'present' on over 100 bills (nice judgement...uh...no comment). Then lost a bid to serve in the house, then became the junior US senator from the State of Illinois in the United States Senate.

Two years later, after passing 1 bill, he said "Hey, maybe I should be president."

It's easy to have good judgement when you never actually vote on anything.

No experience.
No solutions, only speeches.
No love of country.
No higher taxes.
No keeping his word.
No new kind of leader.

NOBAMA!
I can't stand the fact that McCain seems convinced it's ok to be so two-faced, and that the American public won't look right trough him.
He criticizes Obama for touring other countries during the campaign season when HE was the one who toured other countries first. He's probably already forgotten his trip to Canada, Colombia AND Mexico.

If you want to fight, fight clean. Your tactics are only tarnishing your already battered image, Senator.
Yes I can comment about the ad....McCain is the EMPTY Suit!
WOW.  Its amazing that he is not embarrassed to have his name on such foolishness.  Guess I'll be embarrassed for him.
He's proud of that comercial??!! That statement alone lets me know he has no honor or dignity, and most certainly not qualified to be POTUS. The old fool is truly mentally ill.
What a shame!  McCain says he is PROUD of this ad? So this is where he wants to lead America?  into the ditch? into the mud? marching behind Rove? so sad.

McGrouch hasn't seen the football since the kickoff.  What a wonderful nation we shall have with Obama in the WH, and Congress full of DEMs; even 60+ DEM senators.
The ad is stupid and quite unstable for a veteran image. McCain appears to be someone's broken down grandfather sneaking upstairs to get a drink while no-one is paying attention.
That sounds nice but I'm still waiting to hear substantive details from Senator McCain on how to "make us safe and prosperous" that passes the smell test. So far his policies seem eerily similar to what we've heard from Bush for the past 7 years and I'm certainly not feeling safer and I'm definitely not more prosperous.
McCain is deaf and oblivious as well as grouchy and green with envy!
Wait, what?  Nice laundry list of qualities -- of course, none of those things were present in the advert.   This is depressing.  He used to be an okay guy, too.
What?!?!?!?  This guy is losing it!
I can't believe he said that!  He's PROUD of it?  And he thinks Americans should know that he believes he should base this campaign on what he can do for Americans here at home and make America safe and prosperous?  And that's his theme?  What the heck did that commercial have to do with ANY of the above?!?  Why aren't reporters following up their questions?  I would have like to hear his answer to that.  Where, in that stupid commercial, was anything stated as to how John McCain can supposedly fix things!  Give me a break!   P.S. Where are the good reporters?
So he is "proud" of baseless attacks and his flip flop on promising to run a civil campaign about issues?

This guy is loopy!

Congratulations McCain, you just inspired me to donate to MoveOn despite the fact that I am currently between jobs and am very strapped for cash right now.
