Obama: That the best you can do?

Posted: Thursday, July 31, 2008 2:31 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Obama condemned the Paris Hilton ad today as the latest of McCain’s “predictable political attacks” and sought to portray his opponent as looking out for profitable big oil contributors instead of the working class.

“Given the magnitude of our challenges when it comes to energy and health care and jobs and our foreign policy, you’d think that we’d be having a serious debate,” Obama told residents of this flood-ravaged town. “But so far, all we’ve been hearing about is Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. I do have to ask my opponent, is that the best you can come up with? Is that really what this election’s about? Is that what is worthy of the American people?”

Hours after Exxon-Mobil announced a record $12 billion quarterly profit, Obama whacked the oil industry. “While big oil is making record profits,” he said, “you’re paying record prices at the pump, and our economy is leaving working people behind.”

Obama defended his opposition to expanded offshore oil drilling, saying it wouldn’t provide “short-term relief or medium-term relief or, in fact, long-term relief.”

“Now, although it won’t save you dollars at the pump, I have to say that it has helped raise campaign dollars,” he added. “Because last month, Senator McCain raised more than a million dollars from -- guess who? -- oil and gas company executives and employees – most of whom, most of these campaign contributions came after he went to Houston to meet with a bunch of oil executives and announce that he was in favor of offshore drilling. That’s not a strategy designed to end our energy crisis, it’s a strategy designed to get politicians through an election.”

Obama also kept up his pitch on economic issues, and again claimed that McCain is resorting to negative attacks instead of offering solutions. He said he did not want to get into a “tit-for-tat,” but noted McCain “has fallen back into the predictable political attacks -- demonstrably false statements.”

Obama concluded the rally with a similar riff about which candidate really was the riskiest choice. Notably, however, he did not allude again to attacks on his name, or the idea that he did not look like other presidents on dollar bills -- a line the McCain camp has suggested is invoking the “race card.”

“All they’re doing is churning out the same stuff they’ve done every four years!” Obama said. “All you do is you, you just replace the name then you say he’s too liberal, he’s soft, and he’s and this he’s that, he’s going to raise your taxes. It’s the same arguments that they’ve made over and over and over again.”

Before the town hall meeting at Coe College, Obama met with some families who had been affected by the flooding here. He promised as president to “be a strong, swift, effective” partner with local governments in the event of future natural disasters.

He also claimed special ties to the city, since it was his first stop as a candidate in 2007.

“The skeptics predicted I wouldn't go very far,” he said. “The cynics dismissed it as a lot of hype, a lot of celebrity, a little too much hope. By the fall, the pundits had all but written us off. You guys remember this. The politics and the attacks haven’t changed much.”

HE'S THE BEST
I'm glad they say Obama is a celebrity.

Wikipedia: A celebrity is a widely-recognized or famous person who commands a high degree of public and media attention. The word stems from the Latin verb "celebrere" but they may not become a celebrity unless public and mass media interest is piqued.

I think McCain is a little upset that his international travels hasn't piqued any interest, because no gives a damn. Jealousy is unbecoming. I'm absolutely thrilled that people are interested in Obama, because then they're willing to listen to what he has to say. I'd rather have a popular president than a widely unpopular one.
Speaking of "best you can do," are tweedle-dee and tweedle-dum (Graham and Lieberman) the best McCain can do for surrogates?    With friends like those...
McCain...here's a bag of rocks.....your on a roll.
SEN. MCCAIN AND BUSH'S "BIG OIL FRIENDS" RELEASED RECORD PROFITS AGAIN TODAY, THUS TRYING TO GET THE AMERICAN PEOPLE TO SUPPORT DRILLING.

THE ECONOMIST HAVE TOLD US REPEATEDLY THAT IT WILL NOT LOWER THE PRICE OF GAS.  DRILLING WON'T EVEN BEGAN FOR 10 YEARS AND THE ECONOMISTS SAY THERE IS NO GAURANTE THAT "BIG OIL" WILL LOWER THE PRICE BUT WILL PROBABLY SELL TO THE OVERSEAS MARKET.

AMERICANS WE MUST LISTEN TO THE ECONOMIST NOT POLITICIANS WHO WILL USE ANYTHING TO GET ELECTED. ONCE ELECTED THEY FEEL NO SHAME IN SAYING NOTHING ABOU THE PROMISE THEY MADE.

ALL THIS POLLING ABOUT GAS PRICES AT THE PUMP RELATIVE TO WHAT WILL LOWER THE PRICE OF GAS AT THE PUMP IS JUST POLITICAL AND WHAT SELLS MEDIA RATINGS.

GOOD JUDGEMENT MEANS MEETING WITH "OUR EXPERTS" IN THE FIELD OF ENERGY AND LETTING THEM PULL TOGETHER A PLAN WITH ALTERNATIVES TO PRESENT TO CONGRESS.

FOLKS IT TOOK US 30 YEARS TO GET INTO THIS MESS 25 OF WHICH SEN. MCCAIN SAT IN CONGRESS AND NOW HAS THE NERVE TO DISPLAY AN AD "BLAMING SEN. OBAMA FOR THE PRICES AT THE PUMP AND THE ENERGY CRISIS.  SIMPLY LYING AT HIS BEST.  IT'S DISGRACEFUL AND DISHONEST.

CERTAINLY THAT'S ALL SEN. MCCAIN HAS BECAUSE HE CERTAINLY HAS NO SUBSTANCE, POLICIES OR PLANS TO DISCUSS WITH THE AMERICAN PEOPLE DURING THIS RECESSION ABOUT HOW WE CAN GET OUT OF IT.

THAT POSITION ALONE USING US AS IF WE ARE IGNORANT AND HAVE NO BRAINS IS UNACCEPTABLE
Isn't John McCain married to Paris Hilton?
No wonder he's glad viagra covered by insurance.
Wow, McCrypt is proud of the Britney ad.   The next journalist who says anything about the "straight talk express" instead of calling this what this is (the "sell-out express") should have his or her credentials revoked.
Whatever else you might think about him, Obama's right about the "offshore oil" hoopla -- its all just a ploy, humans!

You can almost hear the collective 'DoH!' from the McCain campaign.

Isn't John McCain married to Paris Hilton?
No wonder he's glad viagra covered by insurance.
He should remind folks that these presidents were younger than he will be.

They seemed to do pretty well and we know a couple of the were confident (oh, yeah, the press calls it arrogant) and I bet so were the others.  I think they were pretty smart, too.  McCain, not so much.
At last! The press refused to pick up on that $1 million big oil bought McCain's flip on Offshore drilling for. Yet here we sit talking about Paris Hilton. What happened to this country?
Obama in 08  I love you.

Bravo! Thank You Senator Obama!
Yes, that is the best McSurge and camp can come up with and these foolish media people let him get away with it because they are afraid that the GOP will cut their salaries. McSurge is an old fool.

Not this time McSurge, not this time.
how in the world can the same guy say that the new yorker cover was in bad taste but his ad compairing obama to britteny and paris was ok!!! this guy in unbelievable!!!!
Beautiful! Brilliant! Go Obama!
"Is that the best you can do?" is a sweet response!

McCain just got served. Actually Mac just served himself by saying he's proud of that ad.
“Because last month, Senator McCain raised more than a million dollars from -- guess who? -- oil and gas company executives and employees – most of whom, most of these campaign contributions came after he went to Houston to meet with a bunch of oil executives and announce that he was in favor of offshore drilling. That's EXACTLY why the Republicons are pushing this issue so hard.  What amazes me is the average joes that buy into this line of bull and parrot it across the blogs.  Hell, even T. Boone Pickens (Republican that funded the Swiftboaters), one of the richest oil men in the US said drilling won't work.  But the brainwashed little minions of the Republicons continue to repeat the RNC's talking points over and over.
Obama is on the right track, just take the high road and focus on issues. Let McIIIrd rant and rave about everything but the issues.
Let's hope the American public is focusing now, the election less than one hundred days out.

That was so funny!  I love it when he talks like that!

Senator Obama has a great sense of humor and is respectful in his comments.
Wham! Wham! Wham! I bet McCain is hiding under his desk right now. Old-man-yells-at-cloud gets his mouth washed with soap and is put away wet!

Oh, Mr Obama, THANK YOU so much for telling us today how you're going to save the world from the energy crisis:  You're going to give everybody their own tire guage and FREE tuneups and that will solve the whole problem.  THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK YOU.

BTW, Obama, you better not push it too much about McCain's donors.  Do you want to start revealing who all your big donors are?  I'm sure some would find that list quite revealing about who and what you really are.
Again Obama hides behind his race like he did with Clinton. Obama Bin Lying.. people are fed up with your race card antics
That's right Barack Obama - keep telling U.S. the truth about John McCain's motives.

John McCain’s for big oil companies sand corporations and will do nothing to change George Bush’s policy or clean his messes.

OMG - Barack is going to smash this old fart.

It's going to be so much fun - watching John McCain dwindle to the piece of dirt he is.

John McCain won't be worth 1 once of oil; now that Barack Obama is countering his BS and non-sense.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
Way to counter Barack...
Sorry sponge head echo mouth but for all you bitching about McCain not offering any solutions I see none in your words either.
Nice! Great deflect on McCain's negative ads. I feel like Obama is saying all the right things here. He is pretty much turning those ads against McCain, which is great.

I still wish the two would finally do a debate. I bet Obama would do really well in them. I am a little nervous that Obama hasn't done debate since he debated Clinton and the moderates went after him on a lot of issues. He shouldn't be nervous here. I feel like McCain would do horribly in a debate, with all his gaffes...
Obama knows how to eat McCains lunch....
Sit back and watch those comments resonate..Like:
"All I can say is that we are proud of that commercial," he answered. "We think Americans need to know that I believe that we should base this campaign on what we can do for Americans here at home and how we can make America safe and prosperous. And that is the theme of our campaign.", said John McCain....
What about the troops in Afganistan and Iraq and Germany and Korea and Europe and around the world...They don't count?
There seems to be this disconnect between U.S. here at home citizens and military and non-military aboard!!!!
How can that be the next POTUS thinking?
I resent that he has to engage in this muck. I hate having to hear him squabble with the neo cons over their stupid campaign tactics. Yes stupid! If they were imaginative, and smart, they would not have to go to the same old, coffee stained, and yellowed pages of Nixon's play book.

Adam asked:

Donna, just out of curiosity, What type of law did you study? (and yes I am honestly curious, no hidden agenda)
Adam, St. Louis (Sent Thursday, July 31, 2008 1:43 PM)
********

Adam,

Please accept my apology. You are correct. We should not support assumptions about one another.

Thank you for the gentle inquiry. I would prefer our discourses be kinder. I have let my emotions get the better of me, at times as I follow this election. I hope to do better.

As I shared with you before, like you, I have no Bachelor of Science degree, which would precede the study of Law. The aforementioned Institutions invite me with a focus toward  matters Social, Cultural, and Religious. Just for the record, nobody could be more amazed about it than me, as a 100%, died in the wool, non-academic. Surely G-D has power over all things.

Peace Everybody
Electing Bush was the first big mistake we made as a nation. Now, putting Obama in office will be a big blunder --- and we still have time to avert it, that is, if we want to but most of us are so impressionable of his showmanship that we care less of the consequences, right?
McCain is so out of touch with the average American!

Then again, what would you expect from someone who spends more on gardeners, maids, cooks and drivers ($260,000+ per year) then 99% of American even make? Yet he calls Senator Obama 'elite'!  This from a guy that wears $500 shoes - and whose wife wears $2,000 outfits.

McCain is the joke of this election!

I'm glad they say Obama is a celebrity.

McCain just Diced Americans...How does he get away with that?
...you forgot one thing Barak, you're too arrogant that your ears are starting to swell and stand out causing a lot of drag when you walk.
We have all been so dumbed down the last 7+ years, I hope it"s not too late.  We see Paris H. and BritanyS. and we think  "Oh,no what stupid thing have they done now?"  Then we see it's just McCain doing dumb things.  And he's PROUD?  Go figure
Nice. Finally some demonstrably strong retorts from Barack to this white noise.
McCain thinks he can resort to Alice in Wonderland tactics. But as long as someone --anyone-- keeps reminding voters how they've been hoodwinked in the past, maybe...just maybe, the same won't happen again.
All you PUMA folks,

I have no respect for any woman who votes against the interests of other women.  If you vote for McCain, you have just b---- slapped every other woman in the country, and for whom? Hillary? the one woman in America who could guarantee a McCain landslide by activating the Republican Base? Are you so juvenile that you cannot see that you are being manipulated by Republican operatives?  Your ignorance is astounding.
Obama with a left upper cut, a right jab, a right hook to McCain's mid-section....

Obama has FINALLY thrown off the gloves.

Let it get bloody.
Maybe I'm callous, but when old white rich guys whine about black people playing the race card I couldn't care less.

Seriously, the whole world power structure is designed around your precious egos and bank accounts. Spare me your indignance and get the hell to work on something important--like the economy, or health care, or trade, or terror, or the war, or education, or housing, or infrastructure.
I say we let Yukos oil and BP make some offers for leases, instead of giving them away.

Note to John: Go easy on the war when advertising on MTV - they're smart enough to know they're the ones who'll get drafted.
*stands and applauds*

I admire Senator Obama's brave attempt to keep the McCain campaign and the media focused on the issues, especially since the issues this year are very serious indeed.

This is not time for the usual foolishness we are subjected to - people are dying and being evicted. The time for games is past.
Pride will pass the litmus test...
but we've learned nothing by bickering...don't go to his level Barack...Say Bye Bye to that stalker...
Distractions are Johnny's problems...

------------------------------------------------

Sounds familiar...back in 2004 Kerry was dubbed to be the "most liberal senator".  Had Clinton won the nomination, she magically would have earned that title.

Whatever.
That's right Obama, stay on message, yes, folks, that is the best McCain can do,,he has nothing else to offer except controversy..just like Bush..enough with the soap opera!  McCain...dismissed by Obama.
Question, what does McDunce bring to the table?  If you listen to the man himself, he does not even know due the the ever changing position he has.

Question, does Obama bring to the table?  If you listen to the man himself, a chance to work together to try to fix this hatred accross the isle, a chance to bring the country back to somewhat of the middle ground to get work down to fix this economy and our ever growing deficit.  A chance to re-establish America as the beacon of hope and world leadership in the free world.

Don't listen to the minions

If you want more of the same in the dunce in chief's policies, then by all means vote for McDunce.

If you want to help change the direction this country has taken and try to restore the good name of this country, then by all means vote for Obama.

Listen to the 2 men themsleves not the minions who are just blabbering idiots.

Be a well informed, well rounded voting citizen.
