Obama: That the best you can do?

Posted: Thursday, July 31, 2008 2:31 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Obama condemned the Paris Hilton ad today as the latest of McCain’s “predictable political attacks” and sought to portray his opponent as looking out for profitable big oil contributors instead of the working class.

“Given the magnitude of our challenges when it comes to energy and health care and jobs and our foreign policy, you’d think that we’d be having a serious debate,” Obama told residents of this flood-ravaged town. “But so far, all we’ve been hearing about is Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. I do have to ask my opponent, is that the best you can come up with? Is that really what this election’s about? Is that what is worthy of the American people?”

Hours after Exxon-Mobil announced a record $12 billion quarterly profit, Obama whacked the oil industry. “While big oil is making record profits,” he said, “you’re paying record prices at the pump, and our economy is leaving working people behind.”

Obama defended his opposition to expanded offshore oil drilling, saying it wouldn’t provide “short-term relief or medium-term relief or, in fact, long-term relief.”

“Now, although it won’t save you dollars at the pump, I have to say that it has helped raise campaign dollars,” he added. “Because last month, Senator McCain raised more than a million dollars from -- guess who? -- oil and gas company executives and employees – most of whom, most of these campaign contributions came after he went to Houston to meet with a bunch of oil executives and announce that he was in favor of offshore drilling. That’s not a strategy designed to end our energy crisis, it’s a strategy designed to get politicians through an election.”

Obama also kept up his pitch on economic issues, and again claimed that McCain is resorting to negative attacks instead of offering solutions. He said he did not want to get into a “tit-for-tat,” but noted McCain “has fallen back into the predictable political attacks -- demonstrably false statements.”

Obama concluded the rally with a similar riff about which candidate really was the riskiest choice. Notably, however, he did not allude again to attacks on his name, or the idea that he did not look like other presidents on dollar bills -- a line the McCain camp has suggested is invoking the “race card.”

“All they’re doing is churning out the same stuff they’ve done every four years!” Obama said. “All you do is you, you just replace the name then you say he’s too liberal, he’s soft, and he’s and this he’s that, he’s going to raise your taxes. It’s the same arguments that they’ve made over and over and over again.”

Before the town hall meeting at Coe College, Obama met with some families who had been affected by the flooding here. He promised as president to “be a strong, swift, effective” partner with local governments in the event of future natural disasters.

He also claimed special ties to the city, since it was his first stop as a candidate in 2007.

“The skeptics predicted I wouldn't go very far,” he said. “The cynics dismissed it as a lot of hype, a lot of celebrity, a little too much hope. By the fall, the pundits had all but written us off. You guys remember this. The politics and the attacks haven’t changed much.”

I cannot wait for the first debate...

I just have this picture in my head of obama's hand on McCains head while ol' yeller is swinging away not landing a single punch.

Hard to run a foot race when you don't have a leg to stand on McCain.  Come on November!!
Let's see...McCain spent a couple of weeks bragging about the "surge". This week he hopes to distract his gaffes, lies, and distortions by bringing Spears and Hilton into his town hall mumbo/jumbo rather than discussing  what Americans are very concerned about. It is obvious to me that his disorganized, illogical, and immature retoric is nothing more than a futile smokescreen that appeals only to those wishful thinkers who also believe that Dubya is doing a great job as president.

The GOP must be embarrassed and humiliated that this is the best they could come up with during the primaries.
What's all this whining about "arrogant"? "Arrogant" was great when it was el presidente Jorge telling the world what was what, bring it on, etc. The right wing loved that arrogance - they cheered for it.

Is our electorates learning?
I agree that opening up more land for drilling will not impact current gas prices. The trouble with the Obama rehotric is he is offering no short term solutions and he is using the oil comapnies as a punching bag. We need to consider all options available to cut current and future energy cost.
Obama sounds fired up!

He needs to give specific solutions for solving our economic, housing, food and energy problems. Before he talks about the economy he should ask the audience, "Are you better off today then you were four years ago?"  "Are you better off today then you were eight years ago?"

He needs to make McCain look like a Bush clone. He seems to have lost that message.

He needs to take off that tie and suit and roll up his sleeves. There is a time to look presidential and there is a time to look like you and me.

Mr. High and Mighty (and self-righteous too).  I truly feel sad of Obama. It makes me wonder what will happen to him and his career if McCain wins the election this coming November.

Big generational problem here.

Most people over 60 don't give a rat's tail about the "hipness quotient."

But there are others who walk among us...

This ad just put miles between anyone under 40 and McCain... not hip.  Derivative.  So 2005.

So Gramps and Gram in Albion, IL go to church Sunday and decry "this colored boy and all his movie star friends" while millions of Americans with both feet in the 21st century just chortle (smirk?).

BTW, there is some truth to the ad albeit a little time-warped:  Obama is hip.  Call it cocky, presumptuous, audacious, too confident, whatever.

Millions of new voters get it.

BTW again, he has also some decent moves in a young man's game and looks hot netting a 3 pointer.

Lest I forget, he is the brightest guy to run for POTUS since Woodrow Wilson and about as much a straight arrow in spite of being tres...hip.

Look out Gramps and Gram... here comes the 21st Century Express!  Love it or leave it.

It was a good gig here today.  Not so much rock concert as pleasant family picnic.  Wide array of attendees, pretty understated yet enthusiastic mood.

You'd have to pay people to come see McCain.
The American government must look at the mess we are in and clean up our financial picture first before we can committ to anything else. Washingtonites should also stop squandering taxpayers money. Everbody should tell the truth that offshore drilling cannot happen immediately.  To say that it can be done immediately underestimates the intelligence of the American people. It may facilitate big oil campaign contributions, but it is a lie. The highest priority should be to immedaitely help the American people to acquire jobs, healthcare, homes, and bring our soldiers home to take care of their families; and pay them! They should never have been separated from them in the first place. If Mr. McCain is such a hero of the Vietnam war, then do something to help those soldiers that are also today suffering from many post-war disorders.  I know because my brother still has problems. Finally, I am still wondering why Mr.McCain turned down an offer to speak to the minority press (Native Americans, Asians, African American, etc.), while Obama accepted, and right after his trip from Europe.
Put Iowa, Indiana, and North Carolina in the Obama column.  I've personally watched Barack campaign. There is none better. He can stay positive and still sting like a bee.  Obama's ground troops are polite courteous, efficient and will add 3 percentage points to each of the swing states.
Electing Bush was the first big mistake we made as a nation. Now, putting Obama in office will be a big blunder --- and we still have time to avert it, that is, if we want to but most of us are so impressionable of his showmanship that we care less of the consequences, right?

Sanders (Sent Thursday, July 31, 2008 2:54 PM)
------------------------------------------------

So you are telling us to fix the Bush mistake, by electing someone who acts/votes just like Bush 98% of the time?

Dude what are you smoking?
It's really sad that McCain had to start this up already, I'm not looking forward to hearing this nonsense for the next three months.  The saddest thing is many people believe it though, and that "taking the high road" didn't get Kerry anything at all.

Also, I am sick of McCain supporters accusing democrats of being caught up in Obama's "show." Perhaps it is YOU who has been caught up in the smoke and mirrors for the past 8 years.  We are much more informed than those who believe your candidates outright lies --->factcheck.org<--- go check that out.
