Obama camp launches fact check site

Posted: Thursday, July 31, 2008 5:03 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC’s Alex Wall and Katie Mulhall
The Obama campaign is launching a Web site to discredit the McCain campaign’s recent attacks on Obama, it announced in a conference call this afternoon. Campaign Manager David Plouffe said that LowRoadExpress.com, a title taken from a New York Times editorial, will focus specifically on documenting and fact checking these attacks.

The Obama campaign already has a page on its Web site dedicated to debunking attacks from viral e-mails and other sources called, “Fight The Smears.” Plouffe clarified that this new site would be solely used to “correct mistruths” coming directly from the McCain campaign.

VIDEO: A day after Sen. John McCain mocked Sen. Barack Obama's celebrity status in a TV ad, Obama's campaign launched a new web site to rebut attacks and responded with an ad of its own. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

Aides also emphasized that even some Republicans are questioning McCain’s tone and tactics. Susan Eisenhower, president of the Eisenhower Group (and Ike’s granddaughter), added, “These kind of comments and innuendos have no place in a presidential campaign of this importance.”

On the ‘Celeb’ ad, Plouffe slammed the McCain campaign for its negative turn and called McCain’s latest ad “frivolous,” while claiming that he has abandoned issues for rhetoric.

"What he’s offering voters is increasingly harsh character attacks … I think voters did expect different from John McCain,” Plouffe said.  He also suggested McCain’s negative strategy would harm his image among independents.

"The road he’s on right now, he’s going to quickly erode that political capital, which is very hard capital to build up,” Plouffe said. “He seems to sink to new lows everyday."

All you PUMA folks,

I have no respect for any woman who votes against the interests of other women.  If you vote for McCain, you have just b---- slapped every other woman in the country, and for whom? Hillary? the one woman in America who could guarantee a McCain landslide by activating the Republican Base? Are you so juvenile that you cannot see that you are being manipulated by Republican operatives?  Your ignorance is astounding.
Just what "political capital" does John McCain still have?  Given a race on character between him and Britney Spears or Paris Hilton, Spears or Hilton would win hands down: more honest and intelligent.
McOil's campaign is now controled by the Anti-Christ Karl Rove and the Mother of OIl Company's Exxon/Mobil.

According to a press release sent out by Time, this Friday's edition of the magazine will reportedly include a article that describes how Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is deeply involved in an effort to "clean up [President] Bush's foreign policy legacy."

But one newspaper in the Persian Gulf believes the negotiations are tailored for the benefit of John McCain during the fall election season. In a Thursday editorial entitled "Negotiations for the Sake of Rice," the UAE's Al-Khaleej writes that leaders in the United States, Israel and the Palestinian Territories all know that no breakthroughs can be expected in President Bush's last few months in office.

McCain is being supported by terroist organizations

Love the site....
I say let McCain keep making stupid commercials.  The negative publicity it generated against himself only helps Obama, plus it wastes resources and money that could be put towards something that may actually help him....what that could be at this point, I have no idea.
Here's one to start off the lowroadexpress.com site.  In this article in Business Week, a Republican strategist stated that McCain had two ads for Obama's decision to whether or not to visit the troops - the current one he's playing, because he did not visit them, and a stand by ad, if he had visited the wounded troops to attack Obama, saying he used our injured soldiers for political gain.

This article includes many things to add to the lowroadexpress page.  Great article and links to factcheck.org included to show how low McCain has sunk this election season.

On himself. Obama lies like a rug.
My guess is Dwight Eisenhower couldn't win (and wouldn't accept if he could) the nomination of the 2008 Republican Party. No wonder his kin are opting out.
Does Obama ever get dizzy from his constant spinning?
Low Road Express! I LOVE IT! McCain is the biggest jerk we've seen since George Bush......it's types like Bush, McCain, Rove, Cheney.....the REASON why the GOP is in the toilet this year.....WHO can support their ways anymore? Instead of GOP they should change their names to LIV.......Low Information Voters.
A new CNN poll shows that only 24 percent of Americans think things are going well in the country. I just tried to post the following on their blog, but it wasn't going through, so I'm posting it here:

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/07/31/poll-countrys-mood-rivals-historic-low/

Everyone's worried about the economy. People want to bring the soldiers home (or move them somewhere relevant). McCain supporters are frightened that the "liberals" are under their beds at night, threatening to put a black man in power and take their guns and bibles away (or replace them with qu'rans). Obama supporters are worried that unchecked militancy will continue and the country will continue on it's course toward ignorance, paranoia, and implosion. Hillary supporters are worried that they were unfairly robbed. Third parties are worried that the two-party system isn't leaving them a viable option. Independents are afraid they'll make the wrong choice (like they did in the last election)., etc. etc. Why should we be happy????

ANSWER: We should be happy because optimism (in moderation) is better than tearing each other apart. And remember (even though I'm not too religious), King Solomon's Ring holds a lot of merit: "This, too, shall pass". It's a phase. We'll get through it.
Will the new web site be as accurate and honest as Obama's main campaign website? I.e., not at all.
That's another "fact check" site from the Obama campaign. Either the candidate has some serious credibility issues, or else McCain and the GOP are getting very nasty...

http://www.political-buzz.com/
NBC helping Barack with the web page design?
You guys are smart!!! Keep it up.  But give stronger counterpunches to John McCane
I love this idea, you guys who run the Obama campaign are great.  If I did not know what month it is I'd swear we were in the last week of the GE cycle.

It is fun to watch all these GOP stalwarts in a lather, sing the 'company' tune.

As I watch "Hardball" hosted by Mike Barnicle and doing a great job, (don't hurry back Chris), Bob Schrum had a great zinger, John McCain has turned into a "grouch without a vision".  Amen to that.

I admire Sen Obama, how he can respond to these attacks smiling and unruffled. His audiences enjoy the push back.    GO GET 'EM!
FR: "Susan Eisenhower, president of the Eisenhower Group (and Ike’s granddaughter), added, “These kind of comments and innuendos have no place in a presidential campaign of this importance".

Suzy obvioulsly doesn't surf this site.
For the most part, I will say that the Bush Administration never affected me that much. It was mainly due to me keeping my head down and focusing on surviving everyday. I know some of my countrymen really saw horrible times during this past 8 years. I was able to travel to other countries and the respect that used to be accorded to Americans has almost disappeared. I am sure you hear of all the endless protests that are planned when Bush travels to other countries. I know some of you here benefited tremendously from the policies and practices of the Bush term and it is always natural to want more, thus the reason you advocate for McCain to win the Presidency. One thing you have to understand is that these benefits have come at the expenses of the majority of our fellow citizens. It will become a dangerous territory if we keep this selfishness up. It will be equally as dangerous if we allow our elected officials to trample on our collective intelligence and promote a survival of the fittest arena. Utilizing social institutions as personal wealth vehicles will only decay our society. For those of you that adamantly oppose Obama for President, I hope that it is because you have made so much progress with Bush that you feel it must continue for YOU and not for everyone else. That I can understand. Because if it is anything else such as bigotry, clueless, misunderstanding of the world, dissent, loyalty to a decaying ideals, then you may need to really pay attention as this coming election is way more than you can handle. It is a good thing that the world is showing enthusiasm for Obama which will only be favorable to our foreign policy when we need it. Yes, sometimes politics dictates that you bash the other guy, but please re-evaluate your politics and see if it truly has a place in this moment in our history. I don’t want to preach, I just felt it is time we start using that American pride that got us the respect we had in the 20th century. Good luck in your thoughts.
One man saying he played the race card is another man saying...
"Hi, I'm Barack Obama....look at me...."

What's the race card in that?

Fools rush in but seem to get stuck in the corner...
John are you sorry?

“He seems to sink to new lows everyday."

No, it's actually due to his old age. You actually begin to shrink the older you become, and by the like of McStrange, his brain has been deteriorating as well.
Good idea. A fact check website. One needs a guard dog against the lie machine. I got to hand it to the Obama camp, they are watchful and full of ideas on how to combat these kind of issues.

McCain really have no ace left on deck. He can't debate on issues, he can't offer anything new and is too close for comfort with the current admin. Hilary back in the primaries could at least go toe to toe with Barrack on issues. Although she's truly mis managed her campaign.

For John unfortunately, there appears to be no option than negative attacks and hope that people would still buy it. It is looking very desparate.

Classic Obama!!

Presented with a 'problem' (McCain's Campaign can't seem to distinguish between fact and fiction;), Develop and Implement a RAPID SOLUTION!!

Is it me. or does it seem that Obama's team is getting faster at responding to this type of smear campaign??!

GOBAMA -- '08
Looks like Obama has a little more royality on his side. First the good Senators from Massachusetts, now the little Eisenhower kid. What colored ropes will Barack be wearing at his coronation later next month?
Obama hypes on celebrity. McCain's right in pointing it out. McCain had a good ad. Obama is a celebrity, not a leader. Obama's never accomplished anything except win the Dem. nomination on the strength of the black vote.

The media, especially MSNBC, is still swooning over Obama because Obama is new and black. The "media lovefest" is getting old.

Question: Why are almost all of the bloggers on this site soooo pro-Obama? I can't figure it out.

McCain 08/12!!-former Hillary supporter
Well....how about Senator Obama's not-so-subtle innuendos that whoever doesn't like him or won't vote for him is a racist? When he says things like "McCain (or Senator Clinton) is trying to scare you about me, because I don't look like the other presidents, I look different," blah, blah, blah -- HE is the one saying that we won't vote for him just because he's black!  It can't possibly be because we don't like him/his politics, we don't trust him, know him, etc.

No Senator Obama, you're the one who "is offering voters increasingly harsh character attacks” and a presenting a "negative strategy that will harm your image."  You're the one who "will quickly erode your political capital, and "sink to new lows everyday."

Said day for issue oriented politics.  If the Republicans only message is do not elect the African American man becasue he is scary then this country is in worse shape than I thought.  We need to move away from race and religion as defining our politics.  We are in the worse shape financially then we have been in decades. We are no longer viewed as the moral leader in the world.  All I see reported on is the negagative ads of McCain.  Today Exxon reported a quarterly profit of $11 billion. I can not vote for a party that stands with big oil, the lobbyists and the continued support of a war in Iraq that even the Iraqis say we need to set a time to leave. John McCain your judgment your leadership is now in question. STOP THIS NEGATTIVE CAMPAIGNING not because it does not work but because it is taking this country down the continual path of hate politics. It seems you want to win an election at the sake of losing you moral compass.
Finally!! Now we'll get some unbiased truth!
LowRoadExpress.com, a title taken from a New York Times editorial, will focus specifically on documenting and fact checking these attacks.
************************ -First Read

How does it feel to be mocked Senator McCain? Not by our candidate, but by your base,'The New York Times'?

LowRoadExpress...now that's funny! That'll get 'em going over there at team McCain. It serves them right.

Matthew, and Nashville,

Thank you for the encouragement. There are more articulate, passionate, and funny posters I should love to mention here. Let me just say, keep up the good work, those of you fighting for the truth.

Marty Holloman's post brought a new insight I had not considered. There are many other devoted fans of First Read who don't post, but glean hope for 'change' because we are calling for it with ours, in trying to dispel the falsehoods of the past 8 years, as well as, those of the McCain campaign.

It was a sobering, but blessed thought. So keep up the good work. Come November, the cheetos are on 'Joe'!

Isn't this what Keith Olbermann's show is for?
"The road he’s on right now, he’s going to quickly erode that political capital, which is very hard capital to build up,” Plouffe said. “He seems to sink to new lows everyday."

He is David. You guys are just starting to take notice of this? Which reminds me, I don't understand why people keep on bringing up how McTemper pledged to run a clean campaign. You can't run a clean campaign when running against someone like Senator Obama, who has a very good chance at winning over the White House. Just like Clinton, McClown's best chance at TRYING to win the presidency is by sinking to new lows. Clinton did it during the Democratic primaries, and we all saw what happened to her. Though some of her imbecilic former supporters still believe that she was robbed. Well, it didn't work for Clinton, so what makes McGeezer think it's gonna work for him? Just like I've said before, the only way this old fool will win the presidency is if more fraud goes down.

From before..

The trouble with the Obama rehotric is he is offering no short term solutions and he is using the oil comapnies as a punching bag. We need to consider all options available to cut current and future energy cost.
TEC-spring-TX (
****

That is because, quite honestly, there is no short term solution or relief.  This is a problem that has been brewing for over 30 years.  We all saw it...we all knew it was coming.  We just stuck our collective heads in the sand and hoped the next guy will fix it.  Well, time has come.  There is no easy fix...there is no fast bandaid.  The US is addicted to Oil and unless there is a very fundemental change in the way we think, it will only get worse.

Incidentally...Exxon just had their best quarter profits EVER...
Obama trying to put CNN and MSNBC out of business? And why do they call it 'Larry King Live' when he isn't?
Ain't that the truth?
I guess McCain never anticipated that Obama is so internet savvy and that he can go toe to toe in so many ways...Go Obama.

We need to fight this McCain smears...please remember to talk to your friends and relatives to point out the lies that are being peddled by McCain.  That is our best defense.
I have a feeling, what negative ads from the McCoo-Coo camp will do is energize the democrats to turn out and vote for Obama.

Anyone who feels the need to vote for an old, senile bat who represents more of the same is a complete idiot.
It's no wonder that the mainstream media and CNN/Fox are having problems covering this campaign. By repeating the slime and smear, you are encouraging the campaigns to produce more of it.....Reporters have an obligation to speak the truth to power, in this case, the massive ad budgets of the campaigns. McCain is lying. You should report this as lying from the opening monologue of every newscast. It should have a major impact on how  the character of the candidate is portrayed. I don't want anyone who lies this casually as my President.
Mc Cain does not seem to remember his record, or his positions from last week. You should report this. I don't want another memory-challenged President.
By continuing to report this serious campaing an "Entertainment this evening" you do a serious disservice to our democracy. Look in the mirror, MSM----but then, I bet this doesn't get printed, doesn't meet your standards for ...what? What standards?
McCain is sick. Always for war - against birth control and equal pay for women. Full of lies, full of anger-- a twisted little man who is just like Bush.

God help us all.
Campaign 2000/campaign 2008 seem to mirror one another.  Bush McCain,McCainBush, the same animal, the same tactics, the same policies. McBush, just say NO!
Maybe this will help a bit ...but I think a response AD like the one recently put out by Obama with a good mix of response to a negative and toe with substance on issues and close it again with reference to the negative AD.
McCain and his campaign should be a wake-up call to any young Republicans out there. After Bush and non-elected Karl Rove worked together to lie to the American people, with drug dealer-user Rush Limbaugh contributing lies for the last 10 years +, with the likes of Cheney and Bush leading us into political isolation, and now, McCain and his inability to focus on clear issues and clear direction for the country, all young Republican need to think seriously about reclaiming the party, tossing out the old guard, seriously looking at what the party of Lincoln offered, realize that the party must reform. The present guard has not the vision needed for the future of the country or its place in the world. Young Republicans, come to the aid of your party and clean house!
The Obama campaign are not responding to all these lies swiftly, this is a national campaign where smear tactics works.  It's not every body that can read in between the lines so you guys must be aggressive and return fire with fire. If Obama want to play Mr nice then he can as well go and become a true monk
Boo hoo!

Quit whining BO!!
Well, mr Plouffe, since the media can only fawn and faunt over Obama, somebody has to call him out on some things. He's a fake, fraud and a flipflopper. He makes racial comments and nobody calls him on it...til now.  He flaunts around like he's already President having already told his transition team to begin working on transition plans and talking about how he will remodel the White House.  While he's talking about remodeling, many people are losing their house and he won't talk about how he will assist them. He hasn't gone to the Senate to work on emergency legislation to assist them. But, he sure had time to jet around talking policy with world leaders when he really had no authority to do so. And, he won't answer questions from REAL people. He's shielded from the press. So, McCain has no choice but to "call him out" since the media is so star-struck they refuse to do it.
Another way to fight these ads is to respond to them in person, and with ads, and to go on the attack. The Obama campaign has been very slow to do this.  They should be pointing out that McCain didn't support the Webb GI Bill, has reversed his position on taxes, immigration, torture, Guantanamo, climate change, etc etc.
You know I was always told "Where there's smoke, there's fire."  Obviously, McCain is hitting too close to home on some of this and people are listening. Just like at the polls this week.
this is good. its a shame that in america where you have a presidental race that was suppose to be above the shamefull low grade attacks. this web site will make sure that the 527s will not be able to just put shit out there for the low information voter to just read and believe. i must say we should not need this, this is a waste of money and time. the kind of attacks that the mccain camp is putting out there is how GWB got elected twice and as we see if this kind of site had been there, Al Gore and maybe Jonh Kerry would have been president. we would not be in the war in iraq, we would not have record deficets, and every else that has goan bad in the last almost 8 years. but the republican have cheapened this whole process. i wish a candidate could talk about the issues, what kind of direction they want for the country, not we have ads with britteny spears as paris hilton.
Susan Eisenhower, the grand daughter of a great republican president and comander in WWII is saying this has no please in this race. my hope is that john mccain will stop, my hope is that obama will not sink to his level.
Check out what the NYT times is saying today (reported on Politico)

http://theboard.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/07/31/say-what-john-mccain-barack-obama-and-the-race-card/

Me thinks the media is finally willing to take McCain to task...
McCain would respond with his own Web site, but he's still trying to figure out what a "google" is.
Mccain camp ran on the low road when they claimed Obama was the cadidate of Hamas.Meaning look out Obama is a muslim. They ran the Harold Ford like ad against Obama. When they got out on it they thought they would turn the tables and cry race first.Rove would be so proud!
