Obama: The Dick Lugar factor

Posted: Friday, August 01, 2008 9:13 AM by Mark Murray

Per Obama spokesman Bill Burton, Obama today in Florida “will be introduced by Jeff Blake, a St. Petersburg resident who will talk about his own experiences tackling the challenges that face so many Americans under the Bush economy -- rising gas prices and stagnant wages. Sen. Obama will discuss his plans to provide real relief to families struggling in these tough economic times and the need for further stimulus to jumpstart the economy.”

VIDEO: Sen. Barack Obama held an economic town hall in Springfield, Missouri challenging John McCain to a duel on tax policy. Newsweek's Richard Wolffe talks about who has the better chance of winning the battle over the economy.

Yesterday, "Obama seized on a record oil company profit to argue that rival John McCain offers only tax breaks for Big Oil and 'short-term gimmicks' to consumers struggling with soaring gasoline prices."

In the latest issue of National Journal, Kirk Victor notes how Obama has been able to use GOP Sen. Dick Lugar (R) in his ads. “Turn on a television in a battleground state and chances are that you’ll see an ad featuring … Obama talking about his work with … Lugar to stop the spread of nuclear weapons… Lugar has endorsed Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, but he does not object to being mentioned in the Obama ad, which is airing in 18 states, including Lugar’s own Indiana. ‘I’ve made no attempt to either suggest or censor ads run by Democratic candidates,’ Lugar said at a press conference on U.S.-Pakistan relations on July 15. ‘I’ll simply say that the ad is accurate.’”

More: “That a Republican lawmaker would appear in a Democratic presidential ad is unusual, observed Darrell West of the Brookings Institution. ‘Just being in an ad, even if you have not endorsed the individual, conveys a sense of bipartisanship. So it does indirectly aid Obama, whether Lugar intended that or not,’ he noted.”

If Obama's people are reading.... you're getting killed. OF COURSE McCain is taking the low road. Have they studied politics for the last 40 years? They're taking the low road because it works. Complaing and whining about is not going to get Obama anywhere. Frankly, it makes Obama look like a sissy. He's got to hit McCain and hit him NOW or else Obama will go down in history with Dukakis, Mondale, and McGovern. I wanna see what Obama's learned from Chicago style politics.
Watched on CNN 360 yesteday people in a small town in MS being interviewed. Half still believed Obama was Muslim. Why? Just because they think so or because someone told them so, or because hey there pard'nr his name sure don't sound anglo saxon to me!

Now you see the kind of ignorance and down-right stupidity out there that Obama has to try and deal with.
bush /cheney/rove/mccant and assorterd oil companies are once again laughing at hard working Americans while they deposit OUR $ INTO THEIR BANK ACCOUNTS.
Joe Scarborough on "Morning Joke" needs to take a few lessons from Lugar. At least Lugar didn't says "he's not one of us."Just because he's (R) doesn't mean he should condone John & his surrogates race-baiting.Right is Right & Wrong is Just Flat Out Wrong!
It's too bad that everyone has been distracted by the whole "celebrity" B.S.  Obama has some very interesting things to say about the oil companies and a new energy policy.  Rick Davis has done a great job making sure that the media talks about extremely unimportant issues.

I don't see anything wrong with this. Obama ia about bringing people together on issues concerning America. How else will this country move forward. Enough with trying to divide all Americans.
Exxon makes a profit of 11 billion and it was announced today unemployment rate is up to 5.7%. There were 51,000 jobs cut in July with a total of 463,000 jobs lost so far this year. And we still have people wanting to support the Bush / McCain agendas. How sad.
So the fact that Obama and Lugar have worked together on a matter of National importance means what?  This sort of thing happens all the time.  Are the Obama supporters really that simple minded?
New Indi (Sent Friday, August 01, 2008 9:26 AM)

Well New Indi, some Obama suporters may be simple minded but let's look at the number of simple minded people supporting McCain who still believe that Obama is a Muslim, or that he is friends with terrorists, or that he refuses to say the Pledge of Alliegence, or that Michelle Obama is a gun-toting terrorists, and that Mccain still has all his marbles and is out there running a credible campaign and offering all kinds of detailed plans and proposals. I'll compare the number of simple minded Obama supporters any day with the number of simple minded McCain supporters. In this case, McCain wins by a landslide.

No wonder the McCain is so aggravated. Senator Obama is one formidable politicain. He's got such an enormous handle on nuance, technology, class, smarts, and yes political saavy that he has left the repubs blinded by the dust in his wake.

It is sweet retribution.
Rather than talk about Paris Hilton and Brittany Spears, Obama is talking about real ISSUES about the economy, issues Mccant has already said he doesn't know much about.  Where are McCain's ads about the ISSUES.  The ISSUE is not Obama's celebrity or Obama's anything, unless it's Obama's views and policies.  But we don't yet know what Mccain has to say about those, because he's too busy going offensively negative. Is Scarborough right for once, that the McCain camp is saying "We can't win, so let's tarnish his image and see if people will vote for us as a vote against Obama"? This desparation stuff is leading to really annoying attack ads that don't address any relevant issues.
Senator Obama is headed in the right direction with these criticisims of mccain.  I would like to see him hit harder on these issues and expose the lying mccain.  We should all be furious at these fake proposals by mccain!
Senator Obama is gaining traction with this arguement.
John McCain has not articulated ONE THING that he will go to help this failing economy. We are HURTING, AND OIL COMPANIES ARE GETTING RICHER.  WHAT A TRADEGY FOR AMERICA!  All McCain does is attack. It is obvious that 26 years of being a senator does not give one the judgment to be President.  It looks like McCain is the empty suit.

Lugar is one of the last of the republicans with real convictions, no wonder he is seen working with the other side.
If you can't be proud of what your party has become you look for others to work with to make our country better.
You have to respect this, a man who puts country first and cartoon politics second, wish there were more like him.
Hey, McCain, doesn't it hurt when a fellow Republican Senator that endorsed you doesn't mind being in an Obama ad?  I would think that it would since it could give the impression that Lugar might support Obama and wouldn't object to his presidency.  What has McCain done about stopping or learning about nuclear proliferation?  Obama has done some of that.
If companies make a profit that demonstrates that the company is being managed properly and efficiently; I get the feeling the the BO supporters want to cap profits of US corporations.  Much of the profit of these large cap companies go back into the economy in the form of dividends etc, and in many cases are owned by employee benefit plans such as 401(k).  If we start to limit profits on US corporations where will you draw the line?
Class Warrior, D.C. (Sent Friday, August 01, 2008 9:45 AM)

Right on, CW.  McCheese can't compete on the issues.   The thought of this idiot getting elected despite not being able to compete on the issues scares me.  Why aren't we smarter than this?

Conservatives don't even like McCheese - so who is his base, exactly?  The LIVs?  Heaven help us.
Sen Obama and all of his supporters might want to look at what a few BiPartisan congressmen are doing.
GEE developing an energy plan that encompasses multiple things including off shore drilling, nuclear, wind, solar, etc. And guess what the oil from
off shore drilling will help pay for the new technologies that we will need in the future. SHAME that Sen Obama could not cross the isle in the senate
and do the same thing.

Yes, VS in Phx: Many of these are in the form of pension funds. If you start messing with those investments, then you hurt the elderly who are already struggling. But, with Obama's idea of redistribution of wealth, it doesn't matter if you take from one to give to another; it's part of his socialist agenda.

______________
Yes, Charlie, and all should write their congresspeople and tell them to cancel/delay their vacation and pass the Energy Independence Bill. How dare they leave Washington when families are suffering.  Acting would at least give people hope.
We don't need politics of the last 40 years....Going negative so early only shows that McCain is in trouble and won't survive the general...
