First thoughts: When race is an issue

From Chuck Todd, Mark Murray, and Domenico Montanaro
*** When race is an issue: Let's get something straight: Anytime race is THE topic du jour in the campaign, it's a bad day for Obama. Period. There are a lot of voters out there who don't want to have their vote judged through the prism of race. (If somehow a swing voter in Ohio, Pennsylvania or Michigan is made to feel that voting against Obama will make them a racist, they'll be resentful.) While today's papers are filled with "who played the race card first?" allegations between the two campaigns, know this fact: The Obama campaign doesn't want the race issue to become an overarching theme of the campaign. How do we know this? Check out the very defensive Obama campaign response to Rick Davis’s sledgehammer against Obama. So as you follow this back-and-forth, it's worth knowing the Obama campaign is going to do their best to downplay race, and the McCain campaign is going to walk a line on the issue. They certainly know if they look like they are injecting it into the campaign, it'll cost them with swing women voters -- but they also know McCain could benefit from a backlash. The thing that galls McCain and many Republicans is what they believe is a double standard. They don't understand how Obama and Dems in general get away with playing the race card to fire up black voters without getting called on it. It's messy politics and catnip for the media, but the cold hard analysis is the cold hard analysis.

VIDEO: As the fallout from the McCain campaign's "Celeb" attack ad continues, the new attack from John McCain is the claim that Barack Obama is repeatedly playing the race card when he points out that McCain wants voters to notice that he doesn't look like past presidents. Newsweek's Howard Fineman discusses.

*** The bear hug: When the McCain folks hit “Send” on that Rick Davis email at 11:46 am ET charging the Obama campaign with playing the race card, what it did was knock Obama’s message of the day -- hitting McCain on Exxon’s quarterly profits -- off the political front burner. (After all, what are we talking about today? Exxon? Or race?) And in a way, it appears that the larger strategy behind the negative ads, Britney and Paris, Landstuhl, etc., is to knock Obama off his message of the day and keep him busy responding to these charges. Compare this week, for instance, with last week, when Obama controlled the message. As the McCain campaign and RNC folks are touting, they've won the week, if you count winning the week as controlling the message (by the way, check out how many views the "Celeb" ad has gotten on YouTube). To use a boxing analogy, McCain is putting Obama into a bear hug -- making it nearly impossible for the Illinois senator to move (in the polls?) or land a punch. But as a big boxing aficionado, McCain also must realize that the fans often don’t take too kindly to boxers who constantly bear hug their opponent. And at some point, the refs break up the bear hugging and the boxing match is forced. But for now, the McCain campaign appears to have a way to knock Obama off message. The only problem for McCain, he's still not on any message of his own, other than "not-Obama." The campaign believes their energy message did break through. Time will tell.

*** The Clinton story will never go away: One interesting development in this race card story is that Howard Wolfson seemed to back up the McCain campaign’s argument for sending out yesterday’s statement. "I think the McCain camp watched our primary on the Democratic side very carefully and they know that any accusation of racial divisiveness can be very, very harmful for a candidate's prospects,” he said. “They heard something that Sen. Obama said and they felt they had to respond quickly to make sure that nobody got the impression that they were engaged in those kind of racial politics.” And when you combine Wolfson’s remarks with the fact that some Clinton supporters are pushing for a platform at the Dem convention stating that Clinton’s candidacy exposed gender bias in the media, it could be an interesting day on the Dem blogs. Just asking: If Obama had lost, would there have been a push in the Dem platform to add a line that claimed the primary results exposed "pervasive racial bias in the media"?

*** Meet Charlie Crist: With McCain (and Obama) in Florida today, our latest veep profile is of the recently engaged Florida Gov. Charlie Crist… His first job out of law school -- after three tries at the Florida bar -- was as general counsel of Minor League Baseball... Nicknamed "Chain Gang Charlie" for sponsoring legislation to bring back shackles to Florida prisons... Swims 20 laps, does 250 crunches, and usually eats just one meal a day... In high school, he was starting quarterback and class president; at Florida State, he was homecoming king and VP of the student body... Crist is largely credited with helping McCain win Florida, but his centrism -- which makes him popular in Florida -- could hurt the Arizona senator among conservatives, if Crist is picked as veep. His stance on abortion is unclear (though he claims to be "pro-life"); he's "fine" with civil unions; opposed NAFTA in a 1998 questionnaire (though he claims to be "for free and fair trade")... And he's only been governor for about a year and a half.

*** Poking Big Labor: The front page of today’s Wall Street Journal is a shot across Big Labor's bow. The news that Wal-Mart is overtly warning its employees that an election of a Democratic president could result in unwanted unionization of the big chain (and perhaps other businesses) is going to make the labor movement both excited and nervous all at the same time. Make no mistake: Big business is VERY nervous that a 60-seat Senate, coupled with a 250-member Dem House and a Dem president, will mean labor laws will be eased to the point that unionization will become easier again. It's a recurring worry we've been hearing from business, and the one thing that's keeping them from trying to have it both ways with the Democrats. Wal-Mart's decision -- which obviously wasn't meant to be shared in the media -- will serve as a spark to get Big Labor even more fired up. The irony to all this is that the guy at the top of the ticket who may benefit from this enormous financial push by labor was the third choice out of three in the Dem primary. Both Clinton and Edwards had more initial labor support in the primaries than Obama.

VIDEO: Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, pleads not guilty to seven felony charges. NBC's Pete Williams has the details.

*** Talk about an October surprise: So is the embattled Ted Stevens actively working against his party? The senator, up for re-election in November, has successfully pushed for an expedited trial in October. Does Stevens realize how much attention his trial will get in the Alaska papers? Sure, he may be found not guilty, and that's apparently the gamble. But wow -- this is about the last thing the GOP needs. A guilty verdict in October would be devastating, not just to Stevens but also to the entire party. Ask Mitch McConnell if he wants a Stevens guilty verdict used in his surprisingly tough race in Kentucky? Ditto Elizabeth Dole in North Carolina…

*** This doesn’t really help the GOP, either: Endangered Sen. Gordon Smith (R) or Oregon is up with another TV ad, praising Democrats -- this one notes his bipartisan efforts with John Kerry and Barack Obama. An earlier ad of his mentioned Obama. Is this the final sign that Oregon won’t be in play for McCain come November?

*** On the trail: Both candidates are in the Sunshine State. McCain gives the keynote address at National Urban League conference in Orlando; later he’s in Panama City, where he holds his first media avail in eight days, hits a fundraiser, and then stops by a “Country First” concert with John Rich. Meanwhile, Obama holds another economic security town hall in St. Petersburg and then attends an organizing meeting in Orlando.

Morning Joe: I loved your program this morning. No I didn’t agree with everything you had to say. But the conversation you and Mika and Tiki and David S and David G and Chuck Todd and Andrea had was really fascinating. That’s all we can ask for. Different points of view. Great show.

You have the potential to have a huge audience.

To John McCain Campaign:

Is Karl Rove responsible or not for what happened to Senator McCain in 2000? Is Karl Rove working or not for the McCain campaign? If he is, what does that say about you? Without mentioning details, there is a history of the GOP playing the race card. Affirmative action is one of the greatest tools they have used. Why isn’t Senator Obama going to win any of the states in the south? We all know why.

Pat Buchanan more or less repeats day after day that the white working class in PA and Ohio and W. Virginia are not going to vote for Senator Obama because of all the so-called stories they have heard. Is that fair? Does anyone in your camp stand up against it? Do you watch Sean Hannity on Fox? I see McCain surrogates on there all the time. Does anyone in the McCain camp speak out about the lies that are coming out of there? No. Which is why we have to.

Do you listen to conservative talk radio? Senator Obama has to defend himself. He’s getting it from all sides in the media. The race card has been going on for months and months. And it isn’t Senator Obama who is using it. He’s bringing out into the open what tactics are being used against him. And you believe this comparable to Senator Obama using the race card?

The McCain Campaign ad is saying that Senator Obama is just a "celebrity" akin to Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. Well, most of us look at Senator Obama simply as a breath of fresh air after what we’ve been through the last 8 years. The whole world does. That’s what those crowds in Berlin were saying.

Senator Obama graduated from Columbia University and Harvard Law School. He was President of the Harvard Law Review. He practiced law as a Civil Rights Attorney and taught Constitutional Law at the University of Chicago Law School. He was elected to the Senate. He is a UNITED STATES SENATOR.

And you come up with Britney Spears and Paris Hilton to compare him to?

Do yourselves a favor and go and speak with an attorney and ask just how difficult it is to become President of the Harvard Law Review. It’s very very difficult.

When are you going to start talking about issues facing this country. Or are you too afraid you'll lose the election if you do. Why is this? We all know why.

Because Senator Obama has been correct on many issues, including Iraq. Even the Bush Administration agrees with him. Have you seen all the negotiations going on? Isn’t that was Senator Obama has been saying all along? He’s been right on many key issues.

Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. Unbelievable. And we expect more of the same. It's what the GOP is  known for. We're ready.

Wal-Mart: “Be aware if a democrat is elected. They’ll bring back unions”.  This is the Republican Party as we know it. No class.

Note that they put Obama's face on the $100 bill. Who's crazy here?
...that voting against Obama will make them a racist, they'll be resentful...

I've said this at least a hundred times on this site:  if you are voting AGAINST someone, it's probably racism (or ageism or a NEGATIVE).  We should be voting FOR something.  Anything less seems uncivilized!

Me personally?  I'm voting for Change and I'm voting FOR Obama!
Race is an issue, and look who's bringing it up all the time, Reverend Wright, Father Pfleger, Ludicris, and Obama. And they are always putting down people that don't look like them, except for Pfleger, he puts down people that do look like him. Obama is running a racist campaign. He has to do something though, he certainly can't chew up much time talking about his experience and accomplishments.
Obama is getting killed. When McCain goes negative (and OF COURSE he was going to go negative... study Republicanism for the last 40 years, it works) whining about and talking about "the low-road", being a sissy about it, talking you're way around it.... that's not going to cut it.

Obama needs to hit McCain hard, now. All this whining and crying about the low-road tactics will secure Obama's place next to Mondale, Dukakis, and McGovern.

Show us what you learned from Chicago style politics, Obama. We have enough spineless Democrats who are afraid of a little dirt.
Of course that would be your analysis Mark. Because according to First Read really everything that happens between the campaigns is bad for Obama...lack of journalistic integrity.
You media people are being played by the McCain campaign like a violin.  Not only are you giving McCain a complete pass on the lies -- no better word for it -- in his last three ads, but you've bought this race-card crap hook, line and sinker.  Obama said the same thing, only he actually included the statement, "Oh, and did I mention he's black?" in June.  Not a peep out of McCain.  Take your rose-colored glasses off: McCain is a phony who never was the "maverick McCain of 2000," you guys keep talking about.  He's ambitious, intemperate and unscrupulous.
But as a big boxing aficionado, McCain also must realize that the fans often don’t take too kindly to boxers who constantly bear hug their opponent. And at some point, the refs break up the bear hugging and the boxing match is forced.
********************************************************

Great analogy guys.  And so very true.  I know that I'm sick of the bear hug already -- and it's only been a week.

Republican won that round for accusing Obama for playing the race card; however, McCain has exposed himself on the issue of Race. Should he use any coded language in the near future, he will be found guilty.

For example, any dog whistle from McCain camp will tarnish his image for life because he levy a charge that Republican cannot live up to. We've already seen a comment from Rove and Co calling him arrogant - which can be interpreted as “uppity” or you don't belong here. The phrase, “bottom of the deck”, is another racial code linking Obama to OJ Simpson. Bottom of the deck is a slavery code and the MSM has already fallen for it by not questioning the use of that phrase. Blacks were shipped to this country from Africa and they were put at the “bottom of the deck” with chain on their hands and leg. Don’t tell me this phrase doesn’t have a racial overtone to it.

We've seen an example of McCain surrogate saying "We don't need another Tiger Wood." These kinds of comment have racial overtone to it. The question before the MSM is simple: would you do your job when you see this kind of comment flying around from McCain's surrogates? The whole American will be watching to see what kinds of person we are as a nation.

"...I think the McCain camp watched our primary on the Democratic side very carefully and they know that any accusation of racial divisiveness can be very, very harmful for a candidate's prospects,” he said. “They heard something that Sen. Obama said and they felt they had to respond quickly to make sure that nobody got the impression that they were engaged in those kind of racial politics.”
---------------------------------------------
Ya' lost me here, Wolfson.  I would say he wasn't paying any attention.  Where was his indignant outrage back in June.  Plus, Obama never stated it was the McCain as the "They will say....".  It is the 527's, North Carolina RNC, whoever the jackass was in TX that printed those buttons; come on.  This feigned indignation is bs and we all know it.
Why is it that Senator Obama is held responsible for anything anyone he has ever known does or says, and he is expected to "reject and denounce" things, but John McCain's associates are free to say whatever they want and John McCain is allowed to say that HE is not repsonsible?

There are ENTIRE NEWS ORGANIZATIONS smearing Barack Obama 24 Hours a day, seven Days a week - has John McCain rejected and denounced any of them? Has the media asked him to?

John McCain said he had nothing to do with the Swift Boat attacks, but this year he trots out one of the Swift Boaters who he is FRIENDS WITH to attack Barack Obama - why is that okay?

Why is John McCain allowed to pretend he is innocent when he is the one calling the shots? Why is he not held responsible for the actions of his associates in the same way that Barack Obama is?

P.S. Remember Phil Gramm? He works for Senator McCain to this day. But he doesn't speak for John McCain, even though they have been friends for 20 years, are in the same political party, and he authored most of John McCain's economic policies.

P.S.S. Sean Hannity and all the other right wing talk show host tell outright LIES over the air everyday, but I haven't heard John McCain "distance" himself from any of them - so he can reap the benefits and then play innocent and claim somebody is playing the race card against HIM?

Whatever.
(If somehow a swing voter in Ohio, Pennsylvania or Michigan is made to feel that voting against Obama will make them a racist, they'll be resentful.)
This is exactly what I have been tring to say and couldnt articulate.
as a independent I do not want to feel as if Obama supportes see me as raciest because i dont agree with them, and a lot of you here love to throw that around.
Again, i am getting sick and tired of Clintons. We've seen through their strategy for 2012. For Howard Wolfson to make that kind of comment on Fox News, propaganda station, it makes me cringe.

Clinton is a looser and will do anything to bring Obama down. How can they be pushing for an agenda on gender bias in the convention. Why can't they accept the fact that she loss due to her inept campaign?
With that kind of description of Gov. Christ, I can say that my fine tuned Gay-dar went off the scale.  Good luck McCain should you pick him!
On the trail: Both candidates are in the Sunshine State. I heard on POTUS that Obama was to speak around 10:00a EST at the same venue and McCain was to be on around 11:00a?  Not sure which is right,...I will stream from CNN at 9:00a CST - to cover my bases.
"The thing that galls McCain and many Republicans is what they believe is a double standard. They don't understand how Obama and Dems in general get away with playing the race card to fire up black voters without getting called on it. "
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
That's a big bold statement to make without examples, no? Pleases explain HOW the Democratic party plays up the race card to "fire up black voters".

The Democratic Party gets the lion share of black votes already, so there is really no need to fire them up. This sounds like some conventional wisdom that is actually a bunch of bunk.

Another attempt to distract from the simple fact that the McCain camapaign is trying to muddy the water so the focus won't be on what a WEAK candidate John McCain is. He has lied, he had flip flopped, and now he's desperate.

Period.
of course its not good what race is brought up.  thats why the mccain campaign brought up race and instead played the race card themselves...seems like they are playing the southern strategy and unfortunately I think the american people for the most part are going to buy into it.

Did anyone see the article on the Huffington Post that asked if Obama is too skinny to be President? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? It said that because majority of Americans are overweight or obese that they would not perceive that he's like them. I'll say this again, ARE YOU KIDDING ME? This is the STUPIDEST thing that has come out so far. The Media is really losing their minds at the prospect of Obama becoming President, really, WTF is next?
Despite my overall feelings towards today's unions, I don't feel sorry for Walmart at all.  Maybe this will wake them up and force them to start treating their people like real humans.
ONE WORD: DEBATE

We'll see who has the judgment to lead...
Why is the press not reporting that McCain is a crook. MSM are all in the tank for McLame.

Is John McCain a Crook?
http://www.slate.com/id/1004633
McWhorter of the Manhattan Institute: "Of course, Obama and his people have to condemn the rap, because it does say some vulgar things," he said. "If you're running for president, you're supposed to be an upstanding individual."
--------------
Yes, we do have those expectations. Why does Obama brag he has Ludacris on his Ipod?  He says he "wishes" his daughters could listen to it. Yet, on the stump, he talked about his younger daughter listening to Snoop and "Hit it while it's hot".  That song is not young child material either.  But, we should not be surprised he lets his children listen to that since he took them to a hate-filled, racist church for all those years. Obama wants it both ways. To the larger audience, he discredits rap. But, in private, he does something completely different.  Fraud.
Obama doesn't look like prior presidents. He doesn't look like he'll ever be the current president either.
The race issue is out there because of McCain -- because he NEEDS it to be.  You in the media just carry the water.  The constant narrative regarding Obama -- "Who is he?" "He needs to prove he is like us..."  The fact that he is constantly accused of appearing different and that difference is framed in a negative light proves the very point that Obama was trying to make.  I hope the media gets Mr. 894 as the president. The dumbing down of Americans is, I fear, beyond repair.  The lack of discussion on issues is sad and largely the media's fault. Hire new journalists.
John McCain is a Senile old man.

Some of you actually want this senior citizen to run our country ?????
I wouldn't want him to drive a car.

Like a great prophet has said, we're going to paint the White House black. Get ready American, there's going to be a few changes around here shortly.
You know I am really becoming convinced that this country is to far in the toilet including the media to elect a black man as President. I think Obama should tell the GOP, the media, the PUMA's and the "good ole boys" to go f*k* themselves, and then continue writing books and enjoy his family.
"Anytime race is THE topic du jour in the campaign, it's a bad day for Obama." And this is EXACTLY why McCain is making race an issue. This proves McCain will do ANYTHING to win. His tactics have become so disgusting. Obama is warning people what Republicans will do to win. He has used this speech before. If you're on the internet or you watch Fox, YOU KNOW THIS IS HAPPENING.

Hearing about Wolfson on Fox, we now know why Hillary lost. This guy has no idea what he is talking about. Does Hillary have any control over him?

We need to BOYCOTT WALMART!

McCain graduated 894th out of 899 at Annapolis.

“We desperately need a president who's smarter than the average American. And we desperately need a media willing to report the truth about candidates without trying to spin the story against them in a way that badly distorts reality.” (John K Wilson – Huffington Post)

"If somehow a swing voter in Ohio, Pennsylvania or Michigan is made to feel that voting against Obama will make them a racist, they'll be resentful."
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Yet ANOTHER distraction. This election is not about who is racist and who isn't. It really doesn't matter.

America's economy, military, education, and health care are SPIRALING OUT OF CONTROL. We don't have the LUXURY of getting off in ANOTHER ditch with the McCain campaign debating things that are IRRELEVANT.

Whether you are a racist or not, you still need healthcare, you still need a job, and you still need a house. No amount of DISTRACTION is going to change that FACT!

John McCain has NO PLAN to change ANYTHING, he is just going to keep doing the same thing and expecting different results. That's called INSANITY.

P.S. Claire McCaskill ROCKED IT OUT on Morning Joe today! The thing she said that stuck with me was "John McCain is focused on Barack Obama and Barack Obama is focused on America."

Exactly.
No, the Obama campaign should just stand politely by the side while McCain and his thugs use every synonym they can find for "uppity Negro"-- arrogant, presumptuous, audacious, effete, elite, etc. etc. etc.

And when the MSM picks up the meme, everyone should pretend it doesn't mean what it really means.

And when someone finally calls the thugs on it, we should all say, "How dare you bring up that ugly race thing! Who do you think you are? You with the 'double standard'"!!

Yeah, that's what we should do. Then we won't have to deal with that ugly race thing.  Right.
Why does the MSM let trivial issues become the talking point of the day? McCain is playing them like a fiddle. "Gee our opponent is talking about real issues facing Americans, but I bet the media would love a race baiting story" and guess what? The media takes it hook line and sinker.
Adam in NY, I couldn't agree more.   I thought Obama went into the prevent defense in the primaries.   As we all know, the only thing the prevent defense prevents is winning.   It almost cost him.   I don't understand why Obama and his team don't get it but here's the fact:  the swing component of the electorate right now is male voters, many of them white and many of them who think Obama is a sissy compared to McCrypt.   There's only one way to change that:  hit back, hit back hard, and when the other person swings, hit back even harder.    Nice guys finish last and if Obama doesn't show some mettle, he's going to throw away an election.
Sen Gordon Smith should just change parties and be a Democrat.  Makes life easier for him.
Beth you nailed it!  I'm sorry Pat from Boston but I have to respectfully disagree with you about Morning Joe.  Everyday, Mika is made to feel guilty because she <gasp> she likes Sen Obama while Joe continues to give backhanded compliments to the Obama campaign.  To paraphrase "it's a dirty trick, or race baiting but I think its smart".  I watched all 3 hrs this morning, and as it was going off, I expected to see "I'm John McCain, and I approved this program".  Every analysis on the show is viewed thru the prism of "how it hurts Obama, how Obama has a serious problem".  Pat Buchanan comes on their dialy and screams "who is Barack Obama, and is he one of us" what the hell does that mean?
A good analysis FR. I would think that if Obama wanted to counter these negative McCain attacks with his own hard ball attacks, then the issue of McCain's apparent senility could be brought up. This could be done fairly easily with all the gaffes that McCain has made in his public statements.
WHO is keeping race front and center? The GOP for sure; but it's the MEDIA that keeps it going....just like the Rev Wright issue. When you have Exxon making RECORD profits of 1.68 BILLION dollars of OUR money and you chose to start this morning with the "race card", it is pathetic journalism.....actually it's not even journalism.....it's promoting the GOP hate filled campaign....just like you did four years ago. I certainly hope America doesn't fall for it again.
First and formost I am sick of the MEDIA interjecting race into this thing. With the break down of who voted for who. With the repeated questions about race being why voters voted for someone.Nobody was complaining when the blacks stood behind Bill Clinton with 94% of our vote. But becuase we have a candidate that we like,trust and believe in. We are fired up just because he is black.I will admit some are just because but speaking for myself that was not my reason as a matter of fact I was looking elsewhere til I heard him speak, then I read about him . I agree with him and that is not because he is black. The biggest race issue in America is that everybody wants to put people in catgories. It is time that we stop worrying about what color people are and start seeing people as people. The Media is what hyped up the blue color thing and the thing in SC. I wish people would pay close attention to the candidates because in my eyes they are both men. Just one stands for things I believe that America is capable of and the other is a reminder of what America was.Both men love this country ,both men want to lead it. I have my choice made not by the Media, unfortunately some people wont take the time to read about the candidates. Will look at a couple of news cycles and will let the Media make a choice for them and that is sad.Others will see silly campaign comercials and believe the silly stuff they see or want to believe. No I blame the media for the whole race issue beginning with the reporting of how the vote breaks down by race. A practice that needs to stop.
HAHAHAHAHA  The fact that ANYONE would think that Charlie Crist would help McCant carry Florida is just HILARIOUS!

The people of Florida are SO tired of Charlie, and sick of being deceived by him. He has accomplished nothing but Amendment #1, which basically has destroyed him. Along, with his flip-flopping on off-shore drilling on our beaches.
What a true, yet disgusting commentary, on the state of American "journalism."    EVERYONE is chasing Fox News and the National Enquirer.   It is nauseating to think that "professional" journalists will give McCain a "win" for the week because he ripped chapter and verse from the darkest spider-stained pages of the Rovian campaign manual.   Utterly disgusting.
Obama needs to grow a pair, and start flinging the dirt at McCain!

Tell the country:

-that he was accepted to the Naval Academy under its Legacy rules [father and grandfather both graduated from it];

-that he graduated in the bottom 5 of his class of over 500;

-that he was called a reckless hot shot which was proven right when he got himself shot down over Vietname;

-that he survived 5 years in a Vietnam POW camp not because of some heroism, but because he told his captors whatever they wanted to hear;

-that he left his first wife after coming back to be with his second wife, with whom he was having an extra marital affair while wife 1 was sick;

-that he was associated with the Keating 5 S&L scandal that caused many Americans to lose millions of dollars;

-that he called his trophy milllionair heiress wife a "see you next tuesday" during an interview;

-that he has voted 98% of the time with the Bush administration making him anything but a maverick or independent;

-that he was against off shore drilling until he was enticed to flip by the oil industry that gave him over $1 million to his campaign;

-that he was against the Bush tax cuts until he was for them because he's now running for president;

-that he was against a Fed. Amendment to the US Const. banning same sex marriage until he now has to pander to evangelicals so now he's for the amendment;

-that he doesn't think women should earn the same amount of money as men doing the same exact job because he voted agaisnt equal pay for equal work;

-that he voted against the expanded GI bill for returning soilders;

...I can go on and on.

Question, why is Obama being such a wuss, and not taking him on with all this stuff!

Obama, grow a pair already!  Or else, I will denounce my party membership and go Independent!
Are you not playing into exactly what TIM RUSSETT tried to warn us about .... discussing Paris Hilton, the race issue, etc ... and avoiding all the bigger issues like energy, unemployment, etc.

John McLame has supported all bills benefiting Walmart. Low wages for struggle Americans, no health insurance, NAFTA, CAFTA etc.

  I read in the Wall Street Journal this morning that 8% of all white voters claim race is their most important issue in voting this year.  Among black voters, 20% of them claim race is THEIR most important issue.  That means one in five voters is voting for Obama only because he is black.
  So, there are plenty of racists out there voting against Obama only because of his race, and this is terribly wrong.  But if one in five people is voting for him only because he's black, that's wrong as well.
As Michelle Bernard on Hardball it was brilliant of Obama to run his own anti- Willie Horton ad. After all the accusations of the Clinton campaign, I can see where it’s better to get those same old dirty emotions out of the way.  Also, the message wasn't just for you, old man. There are other haters.
Since Duel Personality, possibly undiagnosed, early Alzheimer’s candidate really has no apparent knowledge of how to run his campaign. He has to rely on pages from that fat slim ball Karl Rove’s playbill.
If Obama were to attack this forgetful, old man as having memory lapses then it would be the low road.   Obama has not attacked McCain’s absent-mindedness.  That would  be the worst ageism and a really low down road.
Obama has enough class to realize how simple that would be.

Btw; PuMA one group has given up; now it's your turn.
adam/Brooklyn New York City - I must say - I have been on this blog for months, and you sir are the biggest idiot yet.

Your non-sense, with no substance and plenty of falsehood, can be entertaining.

Have you ever thought about being a clown or a comedian?

Anyway back to grown folk talk.

Pat, Boston - that was very well said and I couldn't agree more.  Thanks - you almost always give great views, ideas and information.

I appreciate reading it.

Obama injected race into the campaign while giving his harangue in Germany and he continued that theme yesterday. His campaign believes by bringing race into the picture they immunize Obama from all criticism, e.g. (his racist religous mentor, terrorist associations, etc.). However Todd is right in that whites will resent the inference that to vote aginst Obama is a racist stance. There are racists that will vote against Obama but the overwhelming majority of whites, asians and other americans that vote against Obama will do so because of his politics. He's a lefty and the majority of americans are center-right.I would gladly vote for Colin Powell, Michael Steele or Conny Rice over Hilliary, Gore, Biden et al because I like their politics. I believe most black americans are voting for Obama because they identify with his politics but unfortunately there are many black americans who would just as easily vote for a stuffed Uncle Ben doll if he was identified as a Democrat.Isn't that racism?
Nashville fan
How about Howard Dean the DNC chair stating that the only way a person of color would be at a republican meeting would be as part of the wait staff???
Not trying to fire up black voter there no not him...
Seems to me another kool aid drinking democrat.
 Yeah, agree with you, anytime we talk about race, it is surely going to affect Obama. But Obama cannot be playing the race card because he already has the black vote so play race card for what? Infact, I expect Obama to drop in polls soon but that will help him. He fights better when he is behind. Even then, it was Mccain that was tactifully trying to play the race card and that was his way of starting everything. Nobody thought Obama was playing the race card . It was Jake Tapper of ABC that started insinuating that Obama was playing the race card. And when we started to complain, he spammed our e-mails. Its a SHAME. Obama may have lost this week but I tell you it has helped him because it also slowed down the negative attacks and may have eclipsed Mccains original intentions. Now all eyes will be on Mccain, any mistake because they will surely play that Race card will help to only insulate Obama better. His response then will be 'I told you'.
