McCain camp calls Web ad "humor"

Posted: Friday, August 01, 2008 4:10 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy and NBC's Mark Murray
On the candidate's plane en route Panama City, FL McCain senior adviser Nicolle Wallace responded to the campaign's new Web video entitled "The One," in which Obama seemingly is compared to Jesus and Moses.

"It was a communication to our supporters and it was kind of a bookend to a week that we thought was very successful and it was the intention to use a little bit of humor," Wallace said.

Wallace added that the campaign was "proud to use a little bit of humor," reiterating that McCain was the underdog and they are simply trying to remind their supporters not to be discouraged by Obama's large crowds. "As the underdog campaign, sometimes our crowds aren't 200,000 strong and roaring. But that it's just a different approach and style and imagery, and we're holding our own. We're very pleased with the way things are going and where we are."

Citing New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd as an example, Wallace said that it was the media and not the McCain campaign that originally "anointed" Obama "The One."

In fact, First Read found three recent Dowd columns referring to Obama as "The One" -- but the references were attributed to the McCain campaign.

-- "How does he like the McCain camp mocking him as 'The One'?" (New York Times, 7/27/08)

--  "The One, as McCain aides sardonically call Obama, glided through Afghanistan, Iraq and Jordan, girding his messianic loins for the inevitable kvetching he would face in Israel as skeptical Jews 'try to get a better sense of what's in Obama's kishkes.'" (New York Times, 7/23/08)

-- "'I don't know that people in Missouri are going to like seeing tens of thousands of Europeans screaming for The One,' a McCain aide snarked to The Politico." (New York Times, 7/20/08)

*** UPDATE *** Obama spokesman Hari Sevugan reponds to the McCain Web ad: "It’s downright sad that on a day when we learned that 51,000 Americans lost their jobs, a candidate for the presidency is spending all of his time and the powerful platform he has on these sorts of juvenile antics.  Sen. McCain can keep telling everyone how ‘proud’ he is of these political stunts which even his Republican friends and advisors have called ‘childish’, but Barack Obama will continue talking about his plan to jumpstart our economy by giving working families $1,000 of immediate relief."

It's ads like this and all the others that end up electing idiots like GWBush - we can't make the same mistake with McBush.  The issues are too important to elect an inferior candidate like McCain.  Use your brains people.
to 'the democrat soldier': you speak to my worst fears.  now who is the 'risky' one?

meanwhile,
repups are being told to stay home from their own convention.....
I wonder if people in Missouri will like seeing one candidate go all negative, all the time; and being so completely obsessed with his opponent.
"He's Creepy and he's Kooky
Mysterious and Spooky
And altogether Ooky
McCain for Pres-i-dent"
Your pal, Uncle Fester

who says democrats don't get humor!!!
I am an Obama fan! Yet..WOW, McCain needs to overhaul his campaign strategy quickly.  McCain is totally a dumbA$$.  He didn't learn anything from Hillary's losing campaign!  First, you let your minions diss a major contributor's daughter along with the Hollywood set and now you potentially piss off millions of christians!  Can't control the message coming from your campaign, then how the heck your going to run the country?  Plain A$$ Dumb!  Hell...We need GWB again, at least he's smarter!
John McCain would rather trash the Christian faith - then to lose the election.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
I find nothing funny about the state this country is in or the war our brave soldiers are currently fighting.  Is this really who the soldiers want to be their commander in chief?  I remember when everyone was yelling that Obama was making fun of them for saying they were clinging to religion.  Where are they now?  Do they have a sense of humor about this?
I used to respect John McCain, wanted to be able to vote for him for President back in 2000, but GW beat him using dirty tactics.  Looks like John just picked up where GW left off.  Very sad that his campaign has gotten this low.  This country is in a VERY BAD place, we are hurting and all he wants to do is joke.  Why not talk about the economy or jobs or the war, no instead he talks about 'The One', Paris Hilton and Brittney Spears, just sad.
What a great opportunity for Obama!!! McCain just left the door open and Obama should kick it in by saying how offended he is with this ad. He should say something like:

"I don't normally comment personally on John McCain's ads, but this is different. As a Christian, I am offended.  John McCain may think it's ok to mock Chritianity, but I don't and I don't think the American people do, either.  Our faith is something hold too closely to our hearts to be made fun of. John McCain has crossed the line with this ad and should have to answer for it."

If Obama says this, he puts McCain at odds with his own already-shaky Evangical base, he reminds those in doubt that he is not Muslim and he further links himself to "American" values that swing state voters seem to find so important.
Why does no one in the press seem to know that "We are the ones that we have been waiting for" comes from the last line of a prophecy/prayer from the elders of the Hopi tribe?  The first time I heard it used was by Maria Shriver in her endorsement of Obama in California -- though of course I knew of it long before she used it.

First Presidential debate between Senators McCain and Obama.

McCain: Time and again you have conducted yourself here and abroad as if you were something outside of ordinary or above the norm. That sounds pretty elitist to me Senator Obama.

Obama: Senator you have continuously over the course of your campaign worked to define me to the American people that I am an elitist. Well I ask you this Senator McCain... Is it elitist of me to want to provide a direction for this country away from the quagmire of the Bush Administration? Is it elitist of me to care about the American's who haven't had a voice to be heard because their righteous screams for economic relief have fallen on deaf ears? Is it elitist of me to want to listen to the people around me with ideas, plans and dreams of methods that could be used to help ween our nation off of foreign oil and fossil fuels? Is it elitist of me to want every American from every walk of life to have options and opportunities to make the most of themselves and their loved ones lives?

If that's being an elitist Senator McCain, then I will have to acknowledge right her on national television right now that you have succeeded in defining me as an elitist.
Go back to the Cheese Aisle, Mole Face.
I think the last laugh will be on McCain and his flailing campaign.  I live in VA - have voted Republican every year since Carter.  I called the RNC and the McCain campaign today and told them to take me off their mailing list and that I wouldn't be voting Republican this year based on these disgusting antics.  I don't like to be treated as if I'm stupid and their sense of humor is beyond the pale.  They'll reap what they're sowing in November.  Good riddance!
For something to be labeled as "humor", doesn't it have to be funny?  This is as funny as when McShame made the gorilla rape joke and called his wife a c**t.
Mccain and his bunch of douchebags are about as funny as a wet fart.
McCain senior adviser Nicolle Wallace said "McCain was the underdog and they are simply trying to remind their supporters not to be discouraged by Obama's large crowds."

Oh I understand now. Jesus and Moses had large crowds too and they didn't succeed so McCain's supporters shouldn't be discouraged. Is that what you meant? I'd hate to hear an explanation from one of McCain's junior advisors.
McCain needs to go home and retire.  He is nasty.  I thought better of him before this and am sick of MSNBC covering this instead of talking about the issues.
As a Christian, simply mocking Christ is very offensive.

Note to McCain, this is not the way to win over the religous-right.
Does Senator McCain's campaign not realize that these negative ads say more about them than Senator Obama?

Lay down with pigs, wake up in mud.  Wonder how many people will buy the slop Senator McCain's campaign is selling or how hilarious Evangelical Christians think this ad is?

It says a lot about the Republican party that these ads are the best the party can do against Obama.

Barack is right. McSmallMan has nothing good to say about himself, he's allowed America to see his true colors and man are they ugly. So instead of McBash talking about his policies and ideas for the future of America, he bashes Barack-- day after day.

I get it; this is really what the American people want. They want someone that doesn't focus on their needs, their struggles, their economic pressures, their concerns, yes, we want more bashing.

McCain, this has truly been a disgraceful week for you ‘my friend’ or should I say McLowBlows.
McCain and his handlers are disgusting. This was meant for his supporters - really? Then why did it run on You Tube instead of the McCain website? Someone should tell McCain to lay off the humor - it always falls flat. My kids use the same tactic - they say something wrong, realize it, and then try to back track by saying they were just trying to be funny, or kidding. Time to grow up and give us your positions on the issues, McCain. We already know how you feel about Obama!
