Things heating up on House floor

From NBC's Mike Viqueira
Ok. The event that was described earlier, where rebellious Republicans were making speeches on the floor after the House had literally turned out the lights and gone home is now potentially turning into something more. It's not the Bastille and it's not Stonewall, but for this place it's getting exciting.

The situation is taking on a life of its own now, as more and more GOP members have put off their travel plans for a few hours to make speeches to staff. Tourists who might usually come into the balconies for a five-minute look at an empty chamber are being treated to some real stemwinders from very unlikely sources.

Rep. Don Manzullo (R-IL), heretofore not known for a fiery oratorical style, just delivered an incendiary address to the assembled GOP staffers sitting in seats normally reserved for members. Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE), a member I don't ever remember hearing say anything at all, followed Manzullo with a patriotic appeal for justice -- which in this case, as he sees it, is defined by a House vote on offshore drilling.

So they're fired up down there. For Capitol Hill, it's quite a spectacle. The next big moment comes at 4:30 pm ET, when the galleries and the entire building are shut down to tourists. Will the members keep their uprising alive? A spokesperson for Speaker Pelosi says they can talk to staffers on the floor all they want. But the tourists have to go at 4:30 pm ET.

And there still are no lights, no cameras, no sound system or PA for them to use.

*** UPDATE *** The daring insurrection on the House floor has come to a quiet end. There was a presser that included a call for the president to exercise his right to call Congress back into session.

In response, Nancy Pelosi spokesman Brendan Daly offers the following quote: "The New Direction Congress led by Democrats has offered real solutions to bring down energy costs, promote renewable fuels and energy efficiency, and promote oil production right here in America. But a majority of Congressional Republicans have voted NO each time. They should go home to their districts and explain their record of obstructing common-sense proposals to address the pain at the pump being felt by American consumers and businesses."

Pelosi has gone way over the deep end with the decision to have a vote on this issue before the recess.  She doesn't want to admit several Dems in the House have constituents who want drilling.

She should do her job and represent the country instead of representing the agenda of her lobbyists.
Rachel Marks, NY (Sent Friday, August 01, 2008 3:16 PM) -At least if Obama were President would be getting an additional $1,000 rebate check in the mail. C A, Tuscaloosa, AL (Sent Friday, August 01, 2008 2:56 PM)

Isn't that fun C A? Getting free money - sure beats working.

Rachel:

You bet. I would love $1,000 in free money. It would help supplement the millions I make at my beer distributorship. It might add to my monthly Vets Disability check I  receive after spending three tours in Nam and two years in the VA for defending you’re a--. I could even send a few bucks to my sons who have been in Iraq and Afghanistan the last four years defending you’re a--. Or I could really waste it and give it to my neighbor who has four kids and just lost his job because his company moved overseas. Then again I just might stick it in the bank. But I would have to do that on Friday as I work 10 hours a day and the banks are not open on Saturday but stay open till 6:00 PM on Friday. My car is kind of crappy though because I have to use all hand controls and it is getting old so I would have to hurry to beat the traffic on Friday. Yeap. I sure like free rides. No contributions to this country. My sons are lazy too. Have no commitment to this country or your safety and freedom at all. Hey Rachel, screw you!
Hey media - Do us all a favor and ignore them the same way they ignored Americans for the past 8 years!  PLEASE!  Too little, too late.
So what does this tell us? The Republicans appear to be interested in solving the problems of the country while the Democrats want to go on vacation.

The question I would like an answer to is this ...

Speaker Pelosi said upon the Democrats obtaining power that her house would be one of the hardest working Congresses (the most days spent on the floor).  Which is in comparison to when the Republicans were in control during the early Bush years, when they worked the least amount of days.

The answer to this argument is if Speaker Pelosi followed through on her word.  The answer is that I don't know, perhaps someone else on this blog does?
So little work was done in congress the last two years, at least some people want to stick around and see if they get one or two things done for the people.
Pelosi seems to think she runs the House. It's the people's House Nancy, not yours. You're just the head janitor at the moment.
Why don't they call in Bush we can have another Terry Shaivo fiasco. How come all of these representatives are from landlocked states?
I sure am glad to see the Republicans working hard for self promotion.

Too bad they were unwilling to pass legislation that would help all Americans.

Republicans this year have set a record for most filibusters in the Senate, and now the House Republicans have blocked relief on energy legislation, just because the Democrats wouldn't give away our oil resources to the oil companies who are already refusing to drill in the leased areas they have.  Pathetic.    At least those Republicans can deliver results for Exxon.
The Democrats better do something about this.  Seriously.  We can laugh at this all we want - but I don't think the rest of this country is laughing.  This is going to score points big time with a lot of people - and Democrats are going to take the hit.

And frankly, I think Sen Obama's campaign is in trouble.  I hate to say that because I support him and volunteer for him.  But he shouldn't be losing this much ground to McCain.  He really shouldn't.  But I have a bad feeling about where all this is going.  The Democrats can't take this election for granted - and so many of them are right now.

I am going to encourage as many people as I can to work as hard as they can (and donate) for Sen Obama.  This is serious!  Pls, all of you who want real change - get off your behinds - and work for it!  We need everybody!

McCain - Not now, not ever!

It's not like the Republicans had much to run on this year, but leave it to the Democrats to just hand them a huge issue to take advantage of.
Way to go congressmen.  Nancy Pelosi needs to go.  She is in ineffective speaker.  Her main goal is to knock heads with Bush.  I hope the senate and the house will elect new leadership in January.  Reid has been a little better than Pelosi but not good enough to retain the majority leader.  They need some new blood up there and I hope they get it.

Congress the time to drill is now.  The sooner the better.  What the heck are you waiting for?????
Sure Nancy, lock the good citizens of the country out so they can't see the spectacle of the House you lead actually trying to get something done. Pelosi would have been a big hit with the russian Politburo.
I wonder what McCain has to say about this? Probably just something about Obama.

Never saw one man so fixated on another. Its really rather unnatural.
C-Span better have their butts in there getting this.
"Work, work, work.  Work, work, work."

I couldn't think of any comment. The whole thing is too idiotic for words on so many levels.
These idiot Republicans are the same ones who have caused most of the problems they are performing their histrionics over.
On a day that our economy lost more than 50000 jobs, It is shameful that a presidential campaign can be poking humour as a campaign strategy rather than address real issues that concerns us in this country.

Shame, Shame on you McCain.

On a day that our economy lost more than 50000 jobs, it is shameful that the Congress go on vaction without addressing the major problem facing the country.

Shame, shame on you Nancy Pelosi.
Muffled screams of desperation in the dark. They just dread going home to their constituents waiting to kick 'em to the curb as fast as they can.

Showboaters. No. Here's the stupid dog, and pony show some Obama hater keeps boringly posting about. A real repub Congressional carnival.
please tell these idiots that we are refining at 98%. any excess drilling will go to india or china none for the U.S. but the speculators and oil companies would profit even more. this is just a political tool being used by some reeal tools.

why not ask why mccain received 1.1 million in campaign cash after he espoused off shore drilling. if you want lower gas prices, build more refineries that would lower the pump price. thirty years ago, this would not have happened because the oil companies though wanting to make a profit still put America first. now as long as they make their buck they do not care who they sell to. they have no honor any more. they consider themselves global.
" ...as more and more GOP members have put off their travel plans for a few hours ..."
--I suppose that's the difference between show-boating and fighting for a cause.  They should all be fired.
They should get use to the wilderness that is where they will be governing from next year.
So a couple of newbies and some gophers are causing a ruckus?

Wish they would've picked a better topic than lining the pockets of rich oil companies...

Hey how bout you all tackle that 10 trillion dollar deficit?  Now wouldn't that be nice.
I've noticed that Obama haters never give reasons why McCain is a better choice. They just post insults full of sarcasm, salt, and snot. They're usually too exhausted to fight on past noon. We run most of them of the board by then.

THOMAS (Sent Friday, August 01, 2008 4:34 PM)

Agreed. But I think most of those Repukes are off the boards by noon because they have jobs.
Hey Republicans, Once you start talking about oil speculators and how drilling for more oil won't produce oil we can use for at least 3 years, maybe the public will want to listen to you. Stop trying to act like your really trying to help us. We're not dumb. You've had 7 years to help energy prices and the only thying you have to show is high oil prices and oil companies making record profits. Exxon made $1500/second for Christ sakes. What the hell do we want to give them more oil to profit from for??
It is a gimmick like the ads John mccain pulled this week

all gimmicks

The republicans don't want to leave UNTI THE OIL COMPANIES GET THEIR WAY...LOL

stomp your feet as you say that.
So why doesn't Pelosi let them vote? Isn't that what they are there for?
That's right, of all the things to get excited about - the GOP'ers are fighting to keep Big Oil happy. That is all the lifting the ban on off shore drilling would do. What patriots.
I can't believe Pelosi won't allow them lights, microphones and cameras. Is this her idea of the Fairness Doctrine? What about free speech? This is the people's House. Not her's!
Would it kill Pelosi if they held a vote on the drilling issue? I guess it would, at least politically. Then the Dems would be on the record opposing lower gas prices. Can't have that, so good move Nancy!
How dare the Democrat do-nothing congress adjourn. How dare they. For all the Bush-bashers who post here ... are those who walked out and gave up on us your answer to the future of American politics?

You voted for them in 2006 with the SAME vigor you are voting for Obama, and look what you got. Their approval rating makes Bush's administration look halfway respectable.  They have done nothing, and they obviously will DO nothing. Are these your polticial heroes? Who turn out the lights and abandon their peers and their country on the brink of economic disaster to nap in their care-free estates made of money? The majority of posters here are as disgusting as their Congressmen are to suggest that Republicans are the only problem with politics in this country.

This is what we got in 2006 ... they've even passed four funding bills to keep the war going for Pete's sake. All we've had since they took office is a falling dollar, a deeper housing crisis, and higher gas prices. They fulfilled NONE of the promises they showered us with. Is this what we can expect from Obama, too?
The peoples house indeed. Democrats calling Republicans morons. Reporters being kicked out. Police throwing people out. Turning cameras and microphones off.

So much for the Peoples House, Free Speech, Freedom of the Press.

And the Democrats have the nerve to say the Republicans are taking our rights away.

Obama/Biden '08

What's next - Tear gassing the Republicans? Let them have their say for heavens sake!
The visitors to the House, before they were thrown out by the police, were cheering the Republicans.

The Democrats better hope there isn't video tape of what's going on here. This has all the makings of being like the '68 convention in Chicago.  Soon enough Pelosi will be sending the German Shepards in.
Fired up and ready to go!! So go home - you guys had years to work on this - what happened? Another case of why we hate Washington.
Mark...PLEASE do your JOB and tell us, the all-unknowing public, why this has happened in the first place.  This would be much appreciated.  Instead of glamorizing these moron's do some reporting on the background of this subject
From the politico:

Rep Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) just pretended to be a Democrat. He stood on the other side  of the chamber and listed all of the GOP bills that the Dems killed.

He then said, "I am a Democrat, and here is my energy plan" and he held up a picture of an old VW Bug with a sail attached to it. He paraded around the House floor with the sign while the crowd cheered.

Good fore Rep Nunes!! Good for all of them!!
As an evangelical christian I am asking myself - did Jesus lead? eventhough he was mocked during his time??

Yes he did!!!

Did Moses lead  - the  answer is yes!!!

So if McCain is drawing an analogy of Barack with Jesus and Moses it tells me what to do. And I will vote for the leader.

Race - if Obama had said currancy versus bills then McCain would not have been able to attack Obama as we have had a gold dollar coin with Sacagawea on it.
This is an important problem that needs to be dealt with. Why are the Democrats running out of town before dealing with it? The Republicans just want a vote on the bill, let them have it!
