Obama: race card charge 'ridiculous'

Posted: Friday, August 01, 2008 6:23 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray, Lauren Appelbaum, and NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy
In an NPR interview, Obama was asked about the McCain campaign's charge that he played the race card. "This notion that somehow I was playing the race card is ridiculous," he answered. "What I said in front of a 98% conservative rural white audience in Missouri is nothing that I haven't said before."

"I don't come out of central casting when it comes to what presidential candidates typically look like," he continued. "It doesn't just have to do with race. It has to do with my name. It has to do with my biography and my background. It has to do with our message of change."

Obama added, "In no ways do I think the McCain campaign has targeted race issues. Although I will say the way they have amplified this is has been troublesome. And the eagerness in which they've done it, they think they can exploit this politically. In fact, what I have said -- and there's no doubt about this -- is that they want me to appear risky to the American people. And I don't think that there is any doubt that people are still trying to figure out what's this young guy doing here running for president."

"Our job is to make sure that the changes we're promoting is the changes that have to be made. If we don't make them, in fact, that's the riskier course."

In his press avail in Panama City, FL, McCain also commented on the issue. "I think his comments were clearly, were clearly the race card because of what he said. Everybody can read his remarks and in fact his campaign retracted those remarks so I think it’s very clear and I was very disappointed. I was very disappointed at his comments. So his campaign retracted those remarks so let’s move on."

But the Obama campaign didn't necessarily retract those remarks. The McCain camp cites a Politico article, which noted that "Obama's campaign quickly put out a statement Thursday retracting the candidate's suggestion that McCain had improperly used race." But here's the Obama statement, and it doesn't seem to retract what he said in Missouri on Wednesday: "This is a race about big challenges -- a slumping economy, a broken foreign policy, and an energy crisis for everyone but the oil companies. Barack Obama in no way believes that the McCain campaign is using race as an issue, but he does believe they're using the same old low-road politics to distract voters from the real issues in this campaign, and those are the issues he'll continue to talk about."

McLiar is at it again -

What happened to John McCain? I used to actually respect this guy. No resemblence to the McCain of 2000. He's just making crap up now on a daily basis -

Somebody needs to press him on it - Since Mr. Russert is sadly unavailable - I hope somebody steps up - Seriously - a lie a day from these goons.
I find this hilarious -- no actually sad. We are such an uneducated electorate.

John McCain and campaign has us, and the media, like putty in his hands. All McCain was waiting for was an "in" to use this because he knows the American people just love this sort of sensationalism. Who cares about the real problems facing us? That is not what gets a person elected. Race, "swift boating", etc, are what gets people elected. And McCain knows it. And he is playing us for fools brilliantly.

Obama is right. He wasn't playing the race card. He was playing the truth card. He is different period! But McCain, knowing how easily we are influenced by hot button topics, pounced on it. And it worked.

51,000 people lose their jobs in July and this is what the focus is. Sad, indeed!
McBush need to go back to high school.

I wish the Rep. Party had someone better than McBush, His brain is expired
That grumpy, cranky, jallopy, hoopty old and arcane MacCain, is too risky to be made a president. The guy's is becoming senile and angry every single day. Oh Mighty America, is that the best we got? The whole intelligent world out there has been laughing at us when we elected that bumbling Bush. And now we are going for some rickety angry old man who does nothing but count his millions every night
You bet. I would love $1,000 in free money. It would help supplement the millions I make at my beer distributorship. It might add to my monthly Vets Disability check I  receive after spending three tours in Nam and two years in the VA for defending you’re a--. I could even send a few bucks to my sons who have been in Iraq and Afghanistan the last four years defending you’re a--. Or I could really waste it and give it to my neighbor who has four kids and just lost his job because his company moved overseas. Then again I just might stick it in the bank. But I would have to do that on Friday as I work 10 hours a day and the banks are not open on Saturday but stay open till 6:00 PM on Friday. My car is kind of crappy though because I have to use all hand controls and it is getting old so I would have to hurry to beat the traffic on Friday. Yeap. I sure like free rides. No contributions to this country. My sons are lazy too. Have no commitment to this country or your safety and freedom at all. Hey Rachel, screw you!

C A, Please quit whining. You're scaring the children.
It's not ridiculus Obama. It's true. It's been all about race since you started your campaign. Ludacris (appropriately named) is right, you do intend to paint the Whie House black.
Why is Barack Obama always way behind the eightball when it comes to responding to issues.  He should have said this exact statement earlier, cut off the McCain campaign.  Else, I merely am hearing about it now, and he did say this earlier.
51000 people lose their jobs, and Nancy Pelsoi goes on vacation. How can Barack give out his rebate checks if Nancy is in Berkly?
I used to be all for Mccain; supported him, defended him, but I cannot defend this. In the last month and especially this last week, I have become a Obama supporter. I can't take the garbage NEmore. Enoughs Enough. Sorry my Republican bros.

LOL @ Fester!!! ;)
I love it that people are talking about Obama's following as a "cult". Here's a little hint:

YOU HAVE TO HAVE A FOLLOWING TO BE A LEADER/PRESIDENT!

As for being a "cult," I fail to see it. I'm not drinking kool-aid, I understand the implications, but I just flat out don't see it. If I want to stand behind my candidate and feel like his positions are the right ones to have, it doesn't mean I'm following him off a cliff. I'm using my reasoned judgment. There is nothing wrong with that.

Oh, one last thing: I'd rather have my thirst for change band me together with like-minded individuals than my thirst for hate, which is EXACTLY what's happening on the other side of the fence.

PUMAs, NotFallingInLine, McCain's commercials, J Merle, whoever... you're all haters, plain and simple. At least by supporting Obama, I'm a part of something that means more than a lynch mob.
The only time race comes up is when Obama, his campaign or his disciples bring it up.

It's not about race, but I don't look like the usual presidents on currency.

It's not about race, but I look different than those other American presidents who have stood at the Brandenburg Gate.

It's not about race, but because of my race I'm a shock to some peoples' system.

It's not about race, but I got 90% of the black vote in primaries when two white candidates would have split them 50-50.

It's not about race, except if the Republicans bring it up.

It's not about race, but this country will be so much better when we show the world we can elect a brown president.

It's not about race, except when I mention my white grandmother and my white Kansas roots.

It's not about race when I use my race to defend myself against the opposing campaign's "risky" label.

Geraldine Ferraro was right.

I was waiting for this, the tipping point.

This election will be a complete landslide. There are not enough Wal-Mart shoppers to stop it.

See ya John-
While in Florida, did Barack mentioned his latest solution to the energy problem and gas prices?  You know, the one where we all have to work together as a team and make sure our tires are properly inflated? Wonderful man that Barack, always seems to be on the cutting edge.
Its funny that when kids say things about other kids we teach them to act like adults and say they are just kids but when adults act like kids we call it politics!!!!
Does that scare you Maggie? Maybe then you'll know how a black person feels.
Ridiculous or not, it's what you've chosen to focus on instead of substantive issues. If only we had media to evaluate the performance of the media in this campaign.
Seeing Obama is in Flordia, did he notice there are  not as many tourists there as usual? That's because people can't afford gas to get here Obama!! Maybe he should get Pelosi on his cell phone and ask her to get back to Washington to vote on that drilling bill!!
If Barack Obama was white, he'd be Bernie Sanders of Vermont, only far less experienced.

Please Someone STOP this madness, this is the most disappointing week we have had in Politics, as a week that saw one company ALONE make over 11 billion dollars a week where 51,000 people lost jobs this past month, but hey lets let the Cranky Ol guy get his point across that he knows nothing about whats going on in this country and can only throw out terribly disturbing ad's one after another and then saying how PROUD he is of these ads and talks condescending to anyone that questions his motive's.  November can't come soon enough to get this over with.  Sorry McCain you ARE a Disappointment to the McCain of 2000.  So sad.  PLEASE STOP THIS MADDNESS.  We Americans can NOT let this happen again (negative ad's) NOT THIS YEAR, NOT THIS TIME.  We are way smarter than this divisive politics.
This whole kerfuffle is based on implausible logic:  that the race card will inform people that Obama is black and/or remind them that they are
racist.    Common sense rejects both possibilities, and there is no other motivation for the race card -- if it is a race card  -- that your humble servant can think of.
