Democrats label Iraq 'strategic blunder'

From NBC/NJ’s Matthew Berger
CLEVELAND, Ohio --  The Democratic Party will formally call the decision to go to war with Iraq a “strategic blunder” in its 2008 platform, according to a draft debated Saturday. The party also included language on Iraq withdrawal echoed by its presumptive nomine, Barack Obama, as it expressed a desire to “be as careful getting out of Iraq as we were careless getting in.”

The party will also add calls for universal healthcare coverage, while keeping the current employer-centric system.

A drafting committee unveiled the 44-page platform for the national party, encompassing both traditional Democratic values and the plans unveiled by Obama.

The party’s draft differs from four years ago on Iraq, when it said “people of good will disagree about whether America should have gone to war in Iraq.” This time, reflecting a shift in American public opinion, the committee hopes to emphasize that “Iraq was a diversion from the fight against the terrorists who struck us on 9-11” while reiterating complaints about the war’s execution. It also echoes Obama’s calls to remove one to two military brigades each month.

“I think the facts are clear now,” Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, drafting committee chair, said after the hearing. “People of good will could disagree with the facts, but as clear as they are now, the facts are manifest that it was a blunder.”

The language on Iraq is consistent with Obama’s position, and is significant for a party that includes many leaders who initially backed the war in Congress. While some, including former Sen. John Edwards, have called the initial support a mistake, others, like Sen. Hillary Clinton, have said the error was largely in the war’s execution.

Obama Senior Foreign Policy Advisor Susan Rice, who presented that section of the draft, said she had not heard complaints from other committee members, but would not know until the full Platform Committee meets and votes on the platform whether it represented the view of most Democrats.

On healthcare, the draft platform adds a call for universal coverage, offering a public plan while stressing people “should have the option of keeping the coverage they have” or participating in private programs.

“The Democratic Party is absolutely unified in a commitment to covering every single American,” said Karen Kornbluth, Obama’s policy director.

The 2004 platform called for “quality, affordable health care for all Americans,” but stopped short of expanding a public program beyond one designed for children. It instead called for individual and business tax credits for more affordable health care and cutting costs.

On the economy, the draft platform calls for an “immediate energy rebate” for American families struggling with the price of gasoline and a $50 billion stimulus plan for building the economy and preventing job loss.

Throughout the meetings Saturday, committee members stressed proposals and language used by both Obama and Clinton during the primary cycle, a sign that the views of both candidates were being incorporated into the party’s updated mission statement.

The committee’s work came after the party received thousands of reports from small group meetings across the country, and after a day and a half of testimony from party members. Those that testified complained of the rising cost of healthcare and fuel, as well as the declining number of blue-collar jobs throughout the country.

“I hear every day about the struggles that are being faced,” said Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.). “This is a phenomenal start in terms of presenting our party’s values, as we hope to engage in this epic challenge in our next session, with our new president.”

The document also includes a section on gender equity, noting the historic nature of Clinton’s presidential campaign, the first woman to win presidential primaries. But it does not include language, advocated by some Clinton supporters, suggesting a “pervasive gender bias in the media.”

“I haven’t seen that yet, but obviously we’re not done with deliberations,” Napolitano said after the meeting.

There was little to no resistance to anything in the draft, with committee members offering new observations and language but not opposing anything in the document. The only opposition came from a small handful of protesters who yelled against going to war with Iran, but then quickly left the room.

The Drafting Committee will conclude its work Sunday. The draft will be voted on by the full Platform Committee next weekend in Pittsburgh, before being formally adopted by the party at the Denver convention later this month.

Been away for a while and been trying to catch up with the goings on in the campaign.

After reading the comments from the past week, I have been amazed to find that the news has been focused on John McCain’s campaign ads.  Apparently Obama is not qualified to be President because he played the race card; he’s become too famous  like Paris and Brittany, too popular, he’s too skinny,  he’s the second coming of Jesus and Moses, way to arrogant, presumptuous and even changed the Presidential Seal.  This is what the media is covering.  Brokaw spent time talking about it on Meet the Press today. This is what the First Read comments have primarily been about.

At this very moment we are involved in 2 wars, our servicemen and women are dying and being maimed, Iran is pursuing its nuclear refining capabilities, the economy is in shambles, jobless rates are climbing, millions of homes in foreclosure, gas is still at $4 a gallon, bankruptcies are climbing and this is what the media is focused on.  This is what the American public is focused on.  Check the polls, the race was a statistical tie according to the 8/1 Gallup National tracking polls.

With no concept of how to correct the problems this country faces, no vision of where the US should be headed, McCain has done the only thing he could do: attack Obama on silly, nonsensical issues.  A total distraction from a discussion on the issues; and the media has bought in to, hook, line and sinker.  McCain releases a frivolous ad and Obama is forced to spend his day answering questions on it.  No discussion on the issues.  No challenge from the press.  No outcry from the American electorate. Complete and utter gibberish day after day.  And the polls are tightening.

McCain has flip-flopped so often that I can honestly say that I am so confused that I do not know where he stands on the issues.  Obama is increasingly changing his positions on the issues.  It seemed that at the end of the primary season we would be able to choose between two candidates with distinctly diverse positions.  Right now, both McCain and Obama have changed position on so many issues that it’s getting really hard to tell them apart.  That’s why the polls are tightening.

The public at large does not care, mainstream media does not care and the country does not seem to care.  This is exactly how Bush became a 2 term President.

This election has become a complete waste of the countries time and attention.  It is a completely frivolous way to choose the next President of the United States.  I am beginning to lose interest.  Let’s hope that this week’s discussion does not center on the size of Obama’s ears.
Now all the party needs to do is put the rightful nominee on top of the ticket...SHE deserves it & CAN WIN~~~
Enough "buyrs remorse" here.
Agree/Disagree I don't care just do something.  The Democrats are getting as bad as Republicans with their "tlking points" and changing their ideas with the shift in the air.

Get us out of Iraq and get us out safe and get them on their feet after we blew over half their country to bits.  I wish we could have Bush hand over some of his oil millions and Cheney too for this mess.
Seems that the Democratic Platform will be a regurgitation of Senator Obama’s positions and traditional Democratic principles and values.  Realize that this is incomplete.  It is an extract from a draft but:

To say the war in Iraq was a strategic mistake is to revisit history.  It’s like saying the surge brought the level of violence down in Iraq.  Both are true but, honestly, who cares.  The question is where do we go from here?  Do we get out in about 16 months or is it going to be dependent on the situation on the ground?

Liked the part about the cash rebate to soften the impact of gas prices but missed the part the Democratic position on off-shore drilling.

Hopefully, the complete, negotiated version will fill in some of the blanks
We should never have gone to Iraq.  Now that we are there, we should get the hell out.
Folks will want to check out this very stark and timely page:

It sets up a clock ticking until someone from the Republican party comes out and takes a moral stand against McCain's recent turn to the low road.  It sets up the issue very clearly.

The "stategic blunder" would have been to have followed NObama's (DIMS) 2006/7 recommendation to pull out by March 08 - instead of the Surge !!!

Finally, re. the original invasion, image Saddam working for the past 5 yrs to enrich 550 Tons of yellowcake uranium...

McCAIN: Judgement to LEAD !!!

After 8 years of childish irrationality and brainless decisionmaking from an administration interested in stealing the country for its party, it is wonderful to see a political document that is mature, intelligent, and remarkably enlightened.
The Democratic Party is a strategic blunder.
Strategic blunder? Like the one where Pelosi wouldn't let the oil drilling bill come to a vote?
Democrats are always at their best with 20/20 hindsight. They're always good at telling us what we should have done for the Iraq war, the Vietnam war (which THEY started), the Civil War. But ask a Democrat what we should do now that will help our futures. They have no clue. They'll let others decide that. Then the Democrats can be critical of those decisions, because of course, they didn't make them.

Democrats are nothing but phony liars.
It's about time...
This is case where daddy bush made baby bush do the dirty work...
Let's put an end to the saying, "shoot first and let God sort them out"...
Guilt and shame be can our chance to mend and heal...
never to go to war again without absolute confirmation and without proper judgment...
"War does not make one great...", said Yoda...
so far so good. I like the platform of the democratic party. I hope they include education though. Thus far, I am pleased. Go Dems and Obama.
"The party also included language on Iraq withdrawal echoed by its presumptive nomine, Barack Obama, as it expressed a desire to 'be as careful getting out of Iraq as we were careless getting in.'"

Actually, the platform is echoing the presumptive candidate, not the other way around,. sloppy writing, sloppy thinking.
To transpose Talleyrand, "It was worse than a blunder, it was a crime".
Finaly, a little back bone, call the war what it is a big  blunder, not to mentioned the 4000 plus lives that were lost for what, for what. Every time i hear John McCain talk about the surge my blood runs cold in side. My own son serve three tours in that un call for blunder of a war and i am not a happy camper from the stories he told me about the suffering the Iraq invasion has done to both the infrastructure and the untold dead iraqui's. Yet John McCain harp and continue to harp about the surge, John what about the 40,000 injuried service men and woman and the 500,000 thousands dead civilian in iraq. What war did we win John and if so at what cost. All of these criminals that push this war through should be tried for treason and send to jail for life. This Country does not need another war monger in the white house never, never again, and that my friend exclude John Mccain.
The argument that the US invade Iraq was not only misguided, unsubstantiable, but unconscionable and illegal. To some of us it was obvious from about June, 2002 that the administration was absolutely set on going to war. It was also obvious that doing so would destroy the positive feelings / support for the US which much of the world had after 9/11. It was also a certainty to me that undertaking this totally wrong act (pre-emptive war) would inflame millions around the globe and especially in the Mideast and create new and renewed animosity toward the US. Then, both the Republicans and Democrats acting as responsible representatives for the American citizenry acted as cowering sheep and with the most self-serving of motives....voted for war. Yes, ALL of our congress persons voting for the action must be held accountable/responsible for the blunder. They should every one be held accountable, and perhaps lose their positions. And certainly, any congress person still for this imperialistic agenda should be turned away from public office. Yes, it is necessary to now withdraw with care, but withdraw from Iraq we must, with no plans of maintaining bases inside of Iraq. Some UN supported force may be kept in near proximity, but any unilateral US presence would be a mistake, and assure continued hatred for our country by those in "US occupied territories".  The voting public must VOTE OUT those who bring ruination upon our society by endless/irresponsible war.
I guess Obama is going to loose this election. His campaign doesn't make it a big issue about Iraq  and Afghanistan where bush is adapting obama's policies and its a big thing.
FR:  The Democratic Party will formally call the decision to go to war with Iraq a “strategic blunder” in its 2008 platform

This the same Democratic party that voted in the majority for the war?
What do YOU know obama???? - You will NOT debate on any issue - because you Can't!  You can not answer a direct question - you must have a prepared speech delivered from the teleprompter - that you can do.
Just listen to him try to talk - stamers, looking for the politically correct answer - the President of the USA is NOT a Stage Show - you will not have a Script in the White House - you are NOT qualified.
THE DEMO'S GET OUT THE BIG RED POINTER AND THEN FOLLOW UP WITH SHALLOW RESOLVE! The medical moved is just painting another face on the same failed system,

But in reality and after the fact ""which everyone knows is this blunder is on going/ Its like past failed Presidents the corruption in congress, the derailed congress, the useless Washington self serving papers hangers, And the list is shows we are and have been mislead for the past thirty years.

So today we again see the same hollow leadership and tomorrow we will be lied to again. No you have less now because your Washington self serving paper hanger has driven this nation to its knees!!!!!!  The answer was always , ! RAISE THE TAXES AND DON'T LOOK BACK!!
Hey First Read??  Why are you not reporting that Obama dropped 9 points in the Gallup Polls this week?  Letting your bias show again.  People have wised up to him and see him the flip flopper and phony that he really is.
Call it what it was and is. A "war" based on lies and deception by the Republican President. Aided and abetted by congressmen and senators too lazy to check all the facts before voting yes and too stupid to question our brain dead President.
It was a pre-meditated Assassination! Period. Are you proud? It is the law that killing off leaders you don't like is ILLEGAL! It is murder in the first. So GWB calls it a "war" to skirt the law. It was never a war. It is a budget breaking invasion.

All this hype is Media driven, and in reality we again have kept the same looser in office for the next four long years, faces and parties change, but the looser is always there! America has not had a true liked leader in forty years. And just maybe it will never have one who has common sense. Our nation loved FDR, because he was a born leader and gave America a direction and path! and look around to what we have built!
Our leadership now has taken this nation to its knees, The Demos are a socialist party, They stand as like Russia, Socialized medical, Food stamps and welfare, fraud and corruption, endless taxes. They have given America a path " straight to depression. We seen how 9/11 completely broke our security, common market, social life, and our military power. All the great military power and nine radical scum bags brought this nation to its knees!

Thus what the DNC is giving we already have plenty of failure. Election promises of hollow and shallow babbling, pandering and leaving a nation undivided! What else can the DNC destroy thiS ELECTION?
Gee, Those sound like specific positions and goal oriented "planks" to me.  The Obama campaign recent sought input from it's grass roots on the platform.

So, the positions sound both reasonable and in step the mainstream re items like "Careful Withdrawal" from Iraq, some type of universal health care, and an acknowledgment of HRC contribution to this historic election cycle. As an added bonus these positions are  actally  both consistent with Barack's stated positions and the sentiments of most Americans.

Q:And the problem with the DEM's this cycle is?

A:A figment os the 24 hr news cycle and the blogosphere, (both left and right)

I rarely agree with anything McCain says but on Friday in the context of the Britney-Paris add, he suggested that we all "relax and have fun". Well we cannot relax unless the media and the campaigns do likewise.

Sports fans, this the Olympic start week! Some climate change lessons will be there for all to see with the terrible pollution in Bejing. Time to relax sip some cold tea and watch the show.

We are less than 1/2 through the process with the Conventions traditionally being the 1/2 point, at least figuratively as first we nominate and then we   elect, eh.

Time for all parties to focus on the process and issue positions, not on who won today's cycle or who is ahead in the current polls (which David Guergen tend to under represent Barack's support).

Meanwhile bloggers, watch the Olympic games, go to the beach, stay cool. The dog days are here but the Change Is Gonna Come!
Iraq was no strategic blunder,Iraq was a war crime, but only weak nations are charged with war crimes,4127 dead americans and tens of thousands in worse condition than if they were dead plus who knows how many Iraqies dead.

Those Iraq people that have had their farthers and brothers killed by Americans right in front of them for no reason at all, those kids that have hidden under the sink and watched their sisters and mothers raped and killed to cover up the crime will never forget that and will be looking for revenge for generations to come,we will never be safe again and all the politicians can say is that it was a stragetic blunder, what ignorance.

Not surprising that the Democrats label all the hard work of our government and our military as a "strategic blunder”. I guess seeking out and destroying terrorists that would cowardly attack our civilians, out citizens, our families would be considered a "strategic blunder" by our just as cowardly Democratic party. Certainly there is a time to talk and negotiate with people that don't agree with you, that dislike you, that hate you. But that time is past when they attack the innocent people of this country and slaughter them like dogs. But now going after the people that both did that, and would do that, is termed a "strategic blunder” by the lowly esteemed Democratic party, many of who voted correctly to fight these maggots years ago. The hard left extremist radicals are now firmly in control of the once fine Democratic party. May it rest in peace.
See Democrats, this is where you deservedly get the Unpatriotic label. This is where you get the Flip-Flopper label (because you too voted for the war). And you certainly have the presidental candidate that represents those qualities. May God bless you, because you're not going to be around much longer because you do not represent the interests of the good people of this country.
The only reason Obama voted against the war is because he is anti military=lie the new book will show you he also believes in communism=why he has terrosist friends and hate preachers.
John McCain went on Letterman before the IRAQ war and claimed he had a SOURCE who said the ANTHRAX attack was by the IRAQI''s! Yes, indeed,  WMDs from the IRAQI''s.
We learned this week the anthrax was actually made and distributed from a US fort in Maryland. WHO IS THE WHITE HOUSE SOURCE? That person committed treason. McCain is sheilding a person who committed treason. Would that be your president, your vice president? WHO IS BEING SHEILDED BY McCAIN? WHAT IS THE TRAITOR's NAME?  False propaganda for the purpose of leading the US into war is a crime.
Brillant - We  can now call for the Nobel prize to these smart people. This was a blunder in 2003. It is a blunber in 2008 and wiil be a blunder in 2100. So what? Cannot change history and live in the rear view mirror. This election is not about what wrong was done in 2003 & by whom, but must be about tomorrow and how we go forward from here.
I don't we this party thinking about tomorrow and wants to gain power on history.
The Democrats are wrong.  Iraq was not just a "strategic blunder" but a moral disgrace.
In my humble opinion, the most strategic blunder the American public has made is the act of electing a democratic majority in both houses of Congress.  Whether it was right or wrong to go to war in Iraq is a moot point at this time.  What matters most to me is not how quickly we get out, but since we are already there and we have invested so much, we should make every effort to leave a "winner."

I fought in Vietnam.  I was proud to serve my country when it called.  I believed then and I believe now that I was indebted to my country for all of the blessings, freedoms and opportunities it bestowed upon me just simply because of the place of my birth.

It was clear to me what we were fighting for: to prevent the spread of communism into South Vietnam.  But thanks to the unappreciative cowardly protestors and the shameless politicians who catered to this dastardly group, American troops were pulled out before the job was done.  And what was the result?  How long was it before the Communists overran South Vietnam?

Please take with a grain of salt what the news media feeds you about how the Iraqi people feel about American "occupation."  I remember watching TV when I returned from overseas and it seemed the news media tried to portray American soldiers as criminals and unwelcome trespassers.

I can share the truth of how the Vietnamese people felt about us by relating to you an experience I had near a city called Ben Hoa.  We were in a convoy, dressed in battle gear passing through the outskirts of town.  When the townspeople spotted us, they came running enthusiastically to the side of the road and cheered and waved heartily.  I will never forget the feeling of pride they gave me and the looks of gratitude on their faces will always be etched in my memory.

Do you think I ever saw any incident like this reported by the media?  Nope, not newsworthy.  They were too intent on promoting the argument for early withdrawal and the truth did not fit their case.

So, when I read the Democrats are hell-bent on withdrawing regardless of whether the time is right, I can't help but draw a parallel to our failure to finish the job in Vietnam.  I have lost my respect for some whom I thought were good, intelligent people.

And it is very sad.
Finally some sanity around health care!

http://laststopmidwest.blogspot.com
Oyez, oyez, here come the judge.  So, what else is new?  This was the biggest blunder in the h/o the U.S.  The lying perpetrators of this criminal act should be duly punished.
Obama '08
So the Democratic Party platform will include a plank for universal health care while their Presidential nominee has a plan that leaves out tens of millions of Americans.  This is so ridiculous.
Well it will fit right in with this...Only if it gets some media coverage

McCain Mocked Idea of Obama on U.S. Currency...in JUNE
Andrew Sullivan, Chris Bodenner, and Eli Sanders all note that the McCain campaign's strategy on race is to (a) play the race card and then (b) accuse Obama of having played the race card.

The issue here, of course, is that John McCain claimed great umbrage at Barack Obama's lighthearted comment that Bush and McCain would emphasize that "he doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills."

But if John McCain thinks that comment was playing the race card, then why did he play it first? ONE MONTH AGO -- in late June -- a McCain ad superimposed Obama's visage on a one hundred dollar bill as part of an effort to mock his supposed 'presumptuousness.'

McCain attack ad, released June 27, 2008:

Side note: As you can see, the video's still image is of Obama on currency. Note that the image doesn't occur until about three-quarters of the way through the video. The way YouTube works, the default image occurs at the midpoint. In other words, McCain's campaign affirmatively choose this image.)

So let's just be clear: John McCain is injecting race into this the campaign, and he's doing so to serve his own political ambitions. As Chuck Todd says: "Anytime race is THE topic du jour in the campaign, it's a bad day for Obama. Period." And Josh Marshall adds, it's McCain's "only chance."

John McCain understands this is the only way he can win, and that's why he's playing this card, from allegations of reverse racism to transparent attempts to make Barack Obama seem "foreign."

Right Off The McCain You Tube Page!

What a shame. The Democratic party, once the party of the common man/woman, once the party of the people that made up the spine of this country, once the party of bravery with a work to get it done attitude, has been reduced to this pathetic bunch of whiny and complaining people. I'm embarrassed for the party. I feel for the people that believe that right is right, and know that sometimes they have to fight for what is right. Those people are being cheated by the likes of Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, and of course, Barack H, Obama. It is these Democrats that will give up our rights for "Peace in our time". I'm no longer embarrassed to be a Democrat. I quit the party last week, and this article provided by First Read tells me I did the right thing.
Hello! I see a lot of people who want to be critical on any compromise the dems bring forth.I must ask you people, do you think gridlock and stubborness gets us anywhere? The reason so many of us where moved by Senator Obamas 2004 DNC speech was pure spirit of "both sides" we were yearning to come together as we did after 9/11. His speech told a tale of coming together from all walks in order to RISE UP FROM A PLACE THAT HAS HELD US STAGNANT FOR TOO MANY YEARS! We need to see both sides, and compromise in order to get these dire issues settled. For those yelping and howling at Barack for adjusting his views. This is not new, and or wrong. It is again, why we felt his speech was so speaking to the heart of the American soul. When gridlock fails what is the answer? Compromise!!!
Save the oil for applications that in the future sun and wind cannot do... just a futuristic thought?
dear god: please let msnbc post this :o)
You see the problem with the McCain campaign is they make Judgement calls based on nothing, oh ok, something or another (that better). I've heard all day that Obama's moving to the center...
Well I ask You where exactly are we on Jobs, The Economy, Money, Our Investments, College Funding, and Energy?
It does not seem to me we are center, right or left...
How about straight down..and what voting block is there...
So when a candidate sits down with economy specialists, and come back with a PLAN that will benefit the country...instead of a gimic or just something TO SAY...why is that WRONG or the BIG "FLIP FLOP"....
LET ME TELL YOU WHY IT'S WRONG...IT'S NEVER BEEN DONE!
So it becomes, Since I didn't think of if FIRST...IT'S "UPPITY", "PRESUMPTUOUS"
Think about it everyone goes into a campaign with the statis quo, Lower taxes, Fix the deficit, Better Education ect,ect but have you ever seen a Politican sit down and get the FACTS FIRST, AND RE-FINDED THIER POSTION DURING, I REPEAT DURING.. A CAMPAIGN....NO!
And people ask why he change his mine on off shore drilling, for all the reason above. Do you want to wait for election day before you get some type of relief, or start putting the Oil companies on notice. I believe that was the purpose of the economy meeting.
But for most candidates IT'S THE STATIS QUO TO THE END!
No change, no maybe, just straight ahead... Take nothing else or changes INTO CONSIDERATION..Just WE WILL FIX IT WHEN WE GET THERE...RIGHT AFTER WE SHOW PEOPLE THAT FACTS ARE A LIE...OR A LIE IS FACTS.
And you wonder why this election will be in the record books. No matter who wins
Things are being done differently in a way never seen before. That's why the polls can't keep up how do you poll CHANGE.
If you think I just talking take a look at Where this comment is and why and to whom, and to whom it will not reach...And I say why not fifty states.
Invading Iraq was one of the most bone-headed foreign policy debacles in history by people who supposedly had "experience" and "strong resumes".  I still can't get over the fact that the American people re-elected this bunch of bozos after the truth came out that there were no weapons of mass destruction.  The fact that this year's election is at all close astounds me.  McCain would just compound the mistake we made 4 years ago.  Please don't think McCain is going to lower the price of gas.  He's just going to put more land and more money into the pockets of big oil.  I'm sure big pharma will do pretty well, too, but not your health care.  And don't think he's going to bail us out of the mortgage mess.  His advisor, Phil Gramm, helped to create it, and says the bad economy is all in our heads.
Can we label Bush as a total blunder?
They should also add there: McBush&Bush - are leaders of this OCCUPATION.
