McCain: No longer partying like it's 1999

Posted: Monday, August 04, 2008 9:06 AM by Domenico Montanaro

The Washington Post's Kurtz writes a C.W.-changing piece about press access to McCain. The campaign is not offering near the access to McCain as some might have thought. "In the old days, reporters would have had hours to chew over the latest controversy, and plenty of other subjects, with McCain. But for a campaign struggling to regain control of its message, the old days are definitely gone."

Kurtz also says that McCain “is having a bumpier ride with journalists than when he ran for president eight years ago. The popular image of the campaign -- McCain bantering with national journalists in the back of his bus -- has, in reality, all but vanished. The traveling press is now routinely stiffed in favor of five-minute sit-downs with local reporters.”

The AP looks at McCain's first run for office and notes how he used his Vietnam hero status to get elected.

Et tu, Paris? Paris Hilton's mother, Kathy, is not happy with McCain for including her daughter in his political ad. "It is a complete waste of the country's time and attention at the very moment when millions of people are losing their homes and their jobs," Kathy Hilton said in a short article posted on the liberal Huffington Post Web site. "And it is a completely frivolous way to choose the next president of the United States."

This from a woman who contributed, with her husband, $4,600 to McCain.

The New York Post: "Mama rips McC: Leave Paris alone!"

Speaking of celebrity... "If Barack Obama gave new meaning to the term 'political celebrity,' then John McCain helped define it," Politico writes. "He emerged as the most popular Republican in Hollywood following his 2000 presidential primary defeat, winning more screen time than the rest of Congress combined. McCain made cameos in 'Wedding Crashers' and '24,' saw his memoir turned into a popular biopic on A&E, and appeared more than 30 times on late night comedy shows."

McCain defended his "The One" ad, which mocks Obama as akin to Biblical Moses. "Asked about the ad, which was e-mailed to supporters, [McCain] told reporters in Florida, 'We were having some fun with supporters.'"

In the continued negativity, "A new Spanish-language web ad from Republican John McCain needles Democratic rival Barack Obama for ignoring Latin America on his foreign tour. ... 'And the Latinos?' appears on the screen. 'Did he perhaps forget about us?'"

Variety takes a look at McCain's Hollywood support. Check out the list of actors, they have similar personalities. They’re all tough guys, including Jon Voight and "McCain's industry support ranges from such actors as Kelsey Grammer, Tom Selleck, Gary Sinise and Robert Duvall, to execs like MGM's Harry Sloan and producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Clint Eastwood has attended a fund-raiser."

Indeed.  I would love to see what the McCain camp's response is.  How do you defend an ad like that?

Really?  It took this long to figure this out?

Now the question is, will the MSM listen?  Probably not.
You tell him, Kathy Hilton, never ceases to amaze me how McCain continues to piss on his base.  It's not a turf, Dawg!

Nice to see some Republicans think this is as big a waste of energy as the rest of us.
I have to think the McCain of 2000 would be disgusted with the McCain of 2008.
This is why I have decided to vote for Bob Barr, partly.  It is also because McCain is using stupid political ads to beat Obama and it's not going to work and people do not like it.  McCain a real navy hero but he has changed and I think he might be sick and not able to be president.  Bob Barr is a real conservative who is younger and can take over the real values argument the people want to hear.
McCain's problem is that he clutches if it looks like he is actually in the running.  We saw this in 2000 after New Hampshire and before South Carolina. At the time, I wondered where the openness had gone.

He does not seem to have the self confidence to keep going in an environment where a misstep could cost him the presidency.

My take is that this timidity in combination with his seemingly mindless bravado makes a very very dangerous combination in a president, not to mention the confusion.
Happy Birthday Barack and I hope that the pundits, MSNBC, angry negative voters and the like will give you a much needed day of rest from insults harassment and racial smears.

I think you are the greatest. I admire your ability to negotiate and see all sides of the equation.

<Kurtz also says that McCain “is having a bumpier ride with journalists than when he ran for president eight years ago. >

That's because the last time he ran, McCain was the liberal. Now the press has someone that's more liberal then John, so John is tossed under the bus. Polls though show that the people of the country disagree with the presses choice this time around.
The press is being given "limited" access to McFossil because sooner or later they are going to have to quit ingorning his multiple gaffes and start reporting on them. He's being protected from the media because he is experiencing dementia and everyone knows it. The won't be able to protect him during the debates, however.
Johnny boy can't even get the campaign out of second gear, let alone convince anyone that his glorious record in the US Senator seems to be overflowing with seconf=d guessing and rubber stamping for daddy bush...Surge my but...Connie Rice where are you?
Pajama Pundit - to answer your question, McCheese  defends it by saying he is proud of the ad. Of course the rest of us have to completely ignore his pledge earlier in the year to run a respectfull campaign.
McCain defended his "The One" ad, which mocks Obama as akin to Biblical Moses. "Asked about the ad, which was e-mailed to supporters, [McCain] told reporters in Florida, 'We were having some fun with supporters.'"

"Having some fun"?!

The religious right is using it as codeword for "Obama is the Antichrist".

I guess for the new John McCain pandering is fun!
"And the Latinos?"

See, John McCain's problem is that he's allowing aides to segment people by demographics. The truth is, McCain's views on immigration are more in line with the Democratic Party than the Republicans. And that's been a major sticking point. I'm not entirely certain that it's politically wise for McCain to court Latinos when many Republicans still haven't forgiven him for being an immigration moderate.
Limited access is because the people running his campaign do the thinking now. They don't want him thinking for himself. He might speak the truth by accident. What happened to McCain?
It's pretty obvious to me why he has distanced himself from the press...The greater the distance between McOld and the press, the less chance of the press reporting a gaffe or bad joke.  McCain has lost control of his own campaign, giving it to Bush handlers. Now McCain has to support the SMEARS and FEARS approach.
I hope that folks will see McCain as he is NOW and not as he WAS!! He is not a maverick—just confused and inconsistent.

It seems that folks are having a rough time getting around that concept. And he is also much older now.

I also think that he is doing the country a huge disservice even to run for president. He is obviously lacking in memory, come-back and judgement. He is not one of the peppy and with it 72 year olds.

Well Mrs. Hilton -- tell your daughter to get a REAL job, stop making a spectacle of herself, and maybe do something valuable for the human race and maybe people will stop making fun of her.  If you think the McCain camp are the only ones who think of your daughter this way, you're sadly mistaken.  I believe it's your daughter who is a "waste of the country's time and attention at the very moment when millions of people are losing their homes and their jobs." Oh, and by the way "that's hot."
McCains handlers are afraid to let him be around the press. They know that he is an old fool. And if left alone with the press more people will be made aware of his lack of knowledge on most subjects.
    * CAN'T WAIT FOR THE DEBATES *
After the debates when McCain is exposed to the country for his total lack of knowledge , then what will his handelers do ?
As a mother, I applaud Kathy Hilton's rebuke of the ad featuring her daughter and Brittany Spears.  I am not a fan of either of the young women but they were innocently it seems put in this ad because they are well known.
Did the McCain camp get their permission or have they even been asked that by the media.  Seems to me they should.
NOBODY is reporting it, but the one time McCain was in front of the press in Florida on Friday, he had one of his SENIOR moments. He also claimed to have "fought for the recognition of Martin Luther King day in his state." He NEVER fought for it, in fact he voted AGAINST it 3 times! He only voted for it after NFL pulled the Super Bowl from Phoenix! Another LIE - Obama NEVER retracted his comments. McCain knows he's getting away with lying, so he's going to keep on doing it!

John McCain is absolutely pathetic. Like George W. Bush, McCain is playing the American people for fools. Rather than focus on the critical issues before us all, McCain is engaging in silly political attacks; perhaps the silliest attacks of any presidential campaign.
McCain debate what???? A bumpier ride than a roller coaster???? Having a little fun with the bible and his supporters???? Playing the Latinos on immigration???? Drill...drilll....drilll...reduce gas prices??? Paris should sue for character defamation..hahahah

Our next President John McLie????

Now who's joking????  The extreme right.
When Obama starting limiting press access, he was VILIFIED by the MSM. I particularly remember how angry Andrea Mitchell was when journalists were not allowed access to Obama in the Middle East. Here was a reporter visibly angry onscreen about the military video and photo ops.

McCain has now also limited press availability. Yet, it's merely reported. I will be anxious to see if he is also tarred and feathered in the media for refusing as much access to the press like Obama was.
BRING ON THE DEBATES!I can hardly wait to see the stark differences between the two of them...side by side. One a well educated, compassionate, literate man (what a refreshing change after so long with a bumbling idiot)and a man that can't remember what he said 5 minutes ago, that should keep his "humor" to himself. His humor isn't funny considering he thinks it's funny to joke about raping women. It's offensive.I live in the state of AZ, and that man hasn't done ONE thing for this state. It's embarrassing. Not the same McCain of old. (Sorry, humor)Voted with Bush something like 98% of the time. That's a maverick?? Wake up, America!Time for a change...Do your own research and think for yourselves, we're not sheepole following along mindlessly.McCain is the same old thing in different clothes. Thank you, Sen. Obama...for being the right person at the right time. Happy Birthday.
Then again, why should the press have or even want access to John McCain? Its not like he speaks for the campaign.
Having some fun"?!

The religious right is using it as codeword for "Obama is the Antichrist".

I guess for the new John McCain pandering is fun!

Pete, what religious right? Where? When?  Please give us specifics so we can check it out.
McCain defended his "The One" ad, which mocks Obama as akin to Biblical Moses. "Asked about the ad, which was e-mailed to supporters, [McCain] told reporters in Florida, 'We were having some fun with supporters.'"

Isn't that nice Senator McCain making "fun" at someone's else expense...Won't he make a good President???? Can you keep your promise Senator McCain? That you would not go negative or that no way you would raise taxes?  This is true politics.
Uh, Karen......
and the issues facing us this election cycle are again, WHAT?
Mr. MaGoo will not sit and chit-chat with the press because he has told so many lies, his old brain can't remember what they all are. Besides his obvious obsession with Paris and the Hollywood creampuff crowd is an indication he is wolfing down the Viagra and Cindy is just a bit dated. He is craving a young tenderoni. Human nature is predictable.
"After the debates when McCain is exposed to the country for his total lack of knowledge , then what will his handelers do ?"-  Ron, phila pa.

They will do what they did when Shrub ran last time on zero credibility- Kick up the RPMs on the fear machine.
