McCain vs. Obama: Here we go again…

Posted: Monday, August 04, 2008 9:16 AM by Domenico Montanaro

Under the headline “Here we go again,” Newsweek wonders what happened to the new type of campaigning a McCain-Obama match-up promised. "It's clear McCain's handlers are determined now to keep him ‘on message’ and not allow much spontaneity to creep into his performances. They can't persuade him to give up town halls, but last week he was noticeably kept away from the national press corps, whom he once called his ‘base.’ Although McCain requested that a couch be put on his campaign plane so he could sit around with reporters as he did on his Straight Talk Express bus during the primaries, the couch has lately been occupied only by overflow staff. McCain looked cranky most of last week, as if he could sense the potential harm he was doing to his reputation as a high-road politician.”

“Modern political campaigns, aided and abetted by the press, exert a powerful downward force. The Democratic handlers are no more high-minded. If anything, they have been rattled by Republican attacks in years past and are now determined to show their toughness. In 2004, as John Kerry was getting ‘Swift-Boated,’ depressed Democrats would recite a meme attributed to Bill Clinton's war room: ‘If you're not hitting, you're getting hit.’”

Here’s an interesting poll of low-income workers in today's Washington Post, conducted in conjunction with the Kaiser Foundation and Harvard. Obama has a 2-1 lead among these folks. “Obama's advantage is attributable largely to overwhelming support from two traditional Democratic constituencies: African Americans and Hispanics. But even among white workers -- a group of voters that has been targeted by both parties as a key to victory in November -- Obama leads McCain by 10 percentage points, 47 percent to 37 percent, and has the advantage as the more empathetic candidate."

More: "The new poll included interviews with 1,350 randomly selected workers 18 to 64 years old who put in at least 30 hours a week but earned $27,000 or less last year. As a group, they are somewhat less likely to be Republicans than all adults under age 65 and are also less likely to be registered to vote. As many call themselves conservatives as liberal, and nearly four in 10 said their views on most political matters are ‘moderate.’

“The group, which accounts for nearly a quarter of U.S. adults, gives the Democrat the nod both as the more empathetic candidate and as the one who more closely shares their values. And while many express no opinion about who would do more to improve the economy or health care -- or the voters' finances -- Obama has the clear edge among those who picked a favorite on these core issues."

EDUCATION: McCain has an op-ed in the New York Daily News today on education. "Campaigning at town halls across America, I am often asked about my plans to reform our public schools. And the answer begins with two points on which most everyone agrees: Every public school child deserves a first-rate education. And too many of our schools are producing second-rate results. Beyond that, the education debate divides quickly into two camps. Some say all that's needed is more taxpayer money, along with more prekindergarten and after-school programs. Others believe that the basic structure of the education system is flawed, and that fundamental reform is needed. You can put me squarely on the side of major reform.”

“These days, the cause of education reform crosses all boundaries of party, race and financial means. In New York, Mayor Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Joel Klein have taken up the cause of reform, as have many others, including the Rev. Al Sharpton. These men are strong supporters of the Education Equality Project, a group dedicated to finally changing the status quo in our education system. This group of leaders is no longer willing to accept a public school system in which many students never even graduate or learn the basics of math, science and English. As Chancellor Klein puts it, ‘In large urban areas the culture of public education is broken. If you don't fix this culture, then you are not going to be able to make the kind of changes that are needed."

ENERGY: Look who's supporting some additional oil drilling? Obama. "In the latest sign of a shift on a key issue, Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama said on Saturday he would support an expansion of offshore drilling as part of a broader bipartisan energy bill. Critics are branding this a flip-flop, but Sen. Obama is citing it as an example of a central tenet of his candidacy: a willingness to bridge divisions to address long-festering problems."

By the way, it appears McCain will now also support the compromise legislation

T. Boone Pickens and Gore are not quite ready to join up together, but they are close. Meanwhile, Ted Turner and Pickens are ready to work together... Go figure.

*******************************************************

I've been wondering the exact same thing.  PARTICULARLY as it pertains to the McCain campaign.

http://thepajamapundit.com/
Your headline suggests that Obama is part of the "here we go again." McCain drew first blood, so to speak. McCain (with the MSM's help) dragged the race into the gutter after Obama's triumphant international tour. Will the MSM call McCain on his hypocrisy?

I'm waiting.

McCain handlers had to be worried about the daily gaffes. Having such a limited and undisciplined candidate, I can fully understand why he's on a short leash now.

And a week into it, its working. We haven't seen a gaffe from McCain for days. We've seen some stupid, low road, demeaning stuff of the type that should never enter a presidential campaign - part of the continuing slide toward demeaning the office as well as the opponent - but we haven't seen a gaffe.
I don't understand McCain's explination or logic around the celebrity ad. People are energetic, hopeful and excited about Obama's campaign. What does that  have to do with his ability to govern. If McCain is envious that Obama has more magazine covers, than McCain should contact AARP. They be glad to have McCain on the cover. Geez, McCain stick to the issues and stop the school in the play ground fiasco.
Happy Birthday Barack. You are 47 years old today!

I hope that the pundits, MSNBC, angry negative voters and the like will give you a much needed day of rest from insults, harassment and racial smears.

I think you are the greatest. I admire your ability to negotiate and see all sides of the equation. In time your nuanced way of solving our problems will be understood by us Americans. For the last 8 years ideas have been shoved down our throats in such a way that we have forgotten how to think at all.

That will change. Change is here.

OBAMA,08

why would anyone making less than 250k a year vote for mccain? it just doesn't make any sense
Thank you MSNBC, CNN and FOX news networks for Obamas decrease in the "polls". Thanks a lot for contributing to McSurges canstant lies. I hope all of you can sleep at night knowing you have helped contribute to his campaign of lies. McSurge and camp has lied about everything under the sun and have run a terrible campaign, thus far. So, Thank you very much MSM.

_____________

Wow, what a shoddy piece of "journalism" there.

He doesn't support offshore drilling.  He said he'd accept a proposal with some limited drilling *IF* if was necessary to get major initiatives going for renewable and green energy.  He said he'd accept it only in if it was necessary to break a road block in getting a significant overall package passed.  He still doesn't agree with it, but is willing to compromise to get stuff done.

MK,MO (Sent Monday, August 04, 2008 9:34 AM)

They don't pay enough attention to know better.  The GOP has "feel good" and "sounds good" policies.  They drape themselves in patriotism and the American flag.  Ever notice Fox News is nothing but red, white, and blue in all their backgrounds, sets, etc?

I used to be a Republican.  I grew up in a republican household.  I never followed politics at all but the occasional news cast.  This year when I started paying attention... I realized that the GOP were nothing but con artists and disingenuous liars.  I've now changed registration to Democrat.
Actually it's here they (the GOP) go again. The Obama campaign's responses are still issue based.

Q:So how is McCain going to deal with the issues?
A:More of the same COYOTP (Cut Out Your Old Tired Politics)
"Here WE go again"??

You got a mouse in your collective pockets, FirstRead? Who's this "we" to which you are refering??

The only irrelevant, stupid, negative, LYING campaigning *I* saw last week came from the "Low Road" express.

Trying to paint both campaigns as taking low blows is a lame attempt at 'balance'. Sometimes, the shoe fits.
Mia - think of it this way. With McCain now looking competitive in the polls, it will force the media to pay a little more attention to him.

Clearly he's not the guy we and the media thought he was. I doubt he will stand up the scrutiny.

We may actually see a cycle in which the frontrunner gets all the attention, people don't like what they see, and then the other guy takes the lead. If so, the key will be not being the leader in mid October. Its kind of like the game in which kids do the hand over hand thing up the baseball bat.
Obama leads amoung the most important statistical groups yet we keep hearing about the anti-Obama spin in these wildly inaccurate polls. Enough of the McCain media..treat both candidates equally.
I simply cannot believe that Americans are even thinking of voting another Republican president in!  Don't they realize this country CANNOT survive another republican?  Are people so stupid they don't realize McCain is mainly for the wealthy and the oil companies?  Are they happy with the way Bush handled things?  I am still in shock Bush got in ONCE let alone twice!!!  This is so depressing, I don't even know if I can watch anymore.  I am sooo sick of the news and the way they simply harp on Obama and McCain gets off scott free.  If Obama had made a tape making fun of religion and calling McCain THE ONE, can you imagine what you all would be saying?  I really don't think anyone would say it's funny!  No, he would have been making fun of people who believe in God, etc.  How come no one in the press is calling McCain on his straight talk express and his no negative campaigning?  Where are all the democratic supporters?  Why aren't they speaking out?  What about the Clintons?  Where have they disappeared to?  ONce again, people will vote AGAINST their own best interests!  It simply amazes me and discourages me.  I can only hope the youth of this country actually get out and vote!   They will be the first to go to Iran after he bomb bombs Iran!
Ted and T. , where's Jane F and John V and Robert Red...in the background buying back to the future of America...
Let's Change America not re-invent it

Obama'08
Obama does NOT support offshore oil drilling!!!!

He NEVER said that he does. What he said was that he might be willing to compromise on the issue if there were some overwhelming bipartisan support for it. Being willing to compromise on an issue is NOT the same as "supporting" that issue. And for you to report this as some sort of change in policy reflects either your incompetence or dishonesty as journalists.
Let see if Morning Jealousy plays Senator Obama Ad has much as they have promoted McCain’s Ad

I seriously doubt if it get the same amount of coverage.
why would anyone making less than 250k a year vote for mccain? it just doesn't make any sense

MK,MO (Sent Monday, August 04, 2008 9:34 AM)

Because some people aspire to make that much money, and don't want to be punished and demonized for it once they get there.
NOBODY is reporting it, but the one time McCain was in front of the press in Florida on Friday, he had one of his SENIOR moments. He also claimed to have "fought for the recognition of Martin Luther King day in his state." He NEVER fought for it, in fact he voted AGAINST it 3 times! He only voted for it after NFL pulled the Super Bowl from Phoenix! Another LIE - Obama NEVER retracted his comments. McCain knows he's getting away with lying, so he's going to keep on doing it MSM needs to wake up and report the truth!

You're "here we go again title is absurd". Are you that biased or just too stupid to see who has backed away from his pledge to run a serious, substantive campaign.
On another note, McCain on education is an oxymoron. Forget about improving schools, lets follow McCain's example and just lower standards and ignore academic failure. Isn't it amazing that the dunce is attempting to paint the Ivy league scholar, Harvard Law Review President and Constitutional Law professor as an airhead. It reminds me of Bush who was a draft dodger at best and AWOL at worst who successfully painted the Senator Kerry, the war hero as a coward.
America won't be fooled twice.
McCain will be successful at maintaining a divided country by using this negative approach.  Theoretical McCain quote:  "I would rather win an election than create a united country".
Not Rich Yet, the bottom line is that if you make more you should pay more.  It's the only fair application of a tax bracket.  Now I have never agreed with an escalated scale like we have now, but a flat percentage that everyone has to pay would ensure fairness in the tax paying landscape. That being said, there is no way a guy making 2 or 3 million a year should be paying the same dollar amount as someone who makes 25k or less.  They may as well not be paying taxes at all.
I don't know why McCain thinks town hall meetings are his greatest venue. He's had some pretty unflattering experiences at them.  I just saw a video over the weekend of him completely  blanking out after being asked a relatively simple 2 part question. Quite the senior moment.

Also, the New Yorker article on the MSNBC home page is a must read. It makes 2 great points that I completely agree with. Alot of idiots out there think increased domestic drilling is going to solve high gas prices and it won't. And whatever standards and ethics McCain had in the truth department are completely gone.
To Mia in Miami.......These people can sleep at night and that's the scary thing about it......and they say they believe in GOD.........WOW
Geez, BL, Cinti- I never noticed the red, white, and blue motif in the backgrounds at FOX, but you're right!
(I have noticed, for some time now, the presence of a little cleavage on most of the "news" sets, though).
The McCain campaign appears to be negative, mean, disrespectful, divisive and cynical.  How can McCain be a president for ALL of America, when people of color (African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians and Middle Easterners) are for the most part supporting Barack Obama?  Obama is garnering 99% of the African-American vote and I believe the Hispanics are backing Obama around 75%.  I do not believe there "is something wrong" with African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians or Middle Easteners.  I believe there is something wrong with McCain, Bush and the Republican Party.  Obama has people of all ethnicities supporting his campaign.  Obama is a unifer and respects all American citizens.  McCain seems to be disrespectful, divisive and condescending to people of color.
What does it say about a candidate if he has to be controlled, handled, and kept away from the press corp?  If he were to be elected, who would be pulling his strings, and really running the presidency?

Seems like Obama is the one in charge of HIS campaign.
Dear American Citizens and the Press

As a concerned citizen, I consider it is my duty to bring following message to you all.

"We the citizens of the United States of America have the ultimate responsibility to elect the " Right Candidate" to lead our nation, out of our huge present and future internal and external challenges as well as opportunities. This is to prevent depression and isolation in-spite of being the only superpower in the world morally, democratically, economically, and militarily.

We need to consider the "critical qualities and characteristics" of  our presumptive presidential nominees at the time we vote.

In my personal and professional opinion the critical considerations are as under:

1. Calm, cool, and collected " temper " [ Presidential Temperament ].
2. Sound and sustained "Judgment and Caliber".
3. "Thought-fullness and togetherness" of purpose and positions.
4. Minimum "ex-poser and exploitation" around "Washington and Washington insiders".
5. Renewed " Vigor and Vision " for our Greatgrand Nation.
6. Foreign policy based on " American Values, Virtuous, Vastness".

Stay informed, stay involved, and stay engaged. Do not allow some partisan media, pundits, pollsters, and perpetual political opinion makers effect your vote in the wrong direction.

Don't be effected and duped by "Psychological Terrorism" that is directed at common American people without their full consent and awareness.

Long live U.S.A and its diverse but democratic people.

PS: McCains temper and senior moments and looseness is the problem. We can not him to be our next president.
Another MSM myth is finally debunked. Obama cannot connect with white working class voters. Based on this poll, Obama is killing McCain by 10 points.

So much for integrity in journalism...this country is toast if they keep these talking heads that knows nothing.
You wonder why many conservatives comentator and pundits die of Cancer...
I wish, any time they speak, each candidate would have a PolitFact "Truth-O-Meter" in front of them.  It would be wonderful to hear a loud buzzer go off whenever a lie is told.

On Oil drilling - The gang of ten (5 repubs, 5 dems) senators worked for weeks together to come up with an energy plan, that covers all aspects of energy needs, and supplies.
I see it as a very good plan that covers now, and the future.
Because it is bipartsan and good, is why Obama supports it. It contains every thing we need now to start becoming independant of foriegn oil, and create our own sources.
Owl

If McCain wants to have “fun” using negative ads, at least he should be fair to Britney Spears. She earned fame and millions using her God given talents. She did not marry into money as McCain did. Let his rich second wife take care of him in the style he “earned” and probably deserves, but we need someone serious to look after our national interests.

Morning Joe would be a better and a more balanced news program if Joe were not around. What is it with this guy? He thinks he has all the answers because his political past.
Shake It Up

The reason McCain went blank was because he was asked what HE had done for blacks.  Since he hasn't supported black issues, he had no answer.

We Women should not make a stink at the convention.

Think about it!!!

Hill said that she had 8,000,000 cracks in the ceiling. NOT!  Don't discount the millions that voted her because of RUSH and his plan to have her win so the REPs. could rally against her, or the other million that were not comfortable with having a multi-racial president, or the million that voted for her because they USED TO LIKE BILL, or the million that voted for her because of name recognition only.

Hillary ran a flawed campaign and is still in debt for running when it was clear she lost.  However Mr. Obama has managed to stay out of debt and above the frey the entire time.  She lost fair and square.

If the Hill supporters want to vote for McInSane OUT OF SPITE: be careful what you wish for, you just may get it... and if you are a woman or have daughters - may the LORD have mercy on your BAD DECISION THAT WILL HAUNT US FOR DECADES.

What's this "we" stuff?  Obama hasn't gone negative - he's disputed positions on the issues, but mcCain is the one gone childishly negative.  I guess that's all McCain has left, he can't debate the issues so he has to go dirty.  I've stopped listening to mccain - too much like a flashback to GWBush - they go dirty and we end up electing a total incompetent.  Let's hope it doesn't happen again this time - our country can't withstand a john mccain presidency.  If he runs the white house like he's run his horrible campaign, heaven help us all.
"T. Boone Pickens and Gore are not quite ready to join up together, but they are close. Meanwhile, Ted Turner and Pickens are ready to work together... Go figure."

I figure that a lot of people are finally waking up and are getting scared. In a few years when we are past the point of no return there will be unity.
"Trying to paint both campaigns as taking low blows is a lame attempt at 'balance'"

shels in austin

I couldn't agree more.  What form of journalism engages in such 'unbiased' bias?
Terry - why would the media want access to McCain? Its not like he speaks for the campaign.
