Obama for tapping U.S. oil preserve

Posted: Monday, August 04, 2008 10:22 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli
On a conference call this morning, Obama energy advisers Elgie Holstein and Heather Zichal discussed the plan Obama will discuss today, including supporting the release of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Specifically, the campaign calls it a swapping out of light crude for heavy crude, which they say will be replaced when the market is less volatile.

Asked if this is a reversal, adviser Zichal says: “Sen. Obama has looked at this issue. He recognizes that Americans are suffering, that we have a unique situation with rising gas prices. And this is one occasion where we really need to look at this strategically and he made the decision that we do need to tap the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.”

The other new parts of the plan, per the campaign:

- He’ll announce a goal of putting one million plug-in hybrids on the road by 2015. These are cars capable of getting 150 miles to the gallon. This will be paired with a $7,000 tax credit for the purchase of these vehicles.

- He’ll announce a “major commitment” to helping the auto industry build new factories or renovate existing ones to retool for the production of these new generation vehicles.

*** UPDATE *** As Republicans point out, Obama was against tapping the preserve just earlier this month. “I do not believe that we should use the strategic oil reserves at this point," Obama said July 7. "I have said and, in fact, supported a congressional resolution that said that we should suspend putting more oil into the strategic oil reserve, but the strategic oil reserve, I think, has to be reserved for a genuine emergency. You have a situation, let's say, where there was a major oil facility in Saudi Arabia that was destroyed as a consequence of terrorist acts, and you suddenly had huge amounts of oil taken out of the world market, we wouldn't just be seeing $4-a-gallon oil. We could see a situation where entire sectors of the country had no oil to function at all. And that's what the strategic oil reserve has to be for.” (See video here.)

See how McCain crumbles when asked the kind of tough questions Obama gets:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/04/mccain-takes-long-pause-w_n_116699.html
How does a "plug-in hybrid" that runs on electricity get 150 miles to the gallon when no liquid is applied to the energy source of the motor?  Those numbers always seemed odd to me.  Oh and the fact that the current infastructure for electricity couldn't support plug-in cars.

I like the fact Obama wants to work with the Automakers as I work for them, I just don't think he understands the true problems behind the automakers.
FINALLY!!!  The $7'000 Tax Credit!  THAT I think will do a lot to offset the costs of Hybrids which are on average about 5 to 15 thousand more than their 'normal' counterparts.  THAT is what I need to hear about . . . NOT F@#$% PARIS, BRITNEY and Dead NRA Presidents as Moses!!!!!!!
OBAMA THINKS...

MCCAIN REACTS...

THE DEFINITION OF A FLIP-FLOPPER IS SOMEONE WHO CHANGES THEIR MIND FOR THE PURPOSES OF BEING POPULAR, OR TO PANDER.

WHICH ONE DO YOU THINK IS A FLIP-FLOPPER?
The 'Oil Preserve'? Is that like a Forest Preserve, where we protect endangered oil?

I wouldn't doubt Obama called it that though. The man really needs to have someone give him a dime so he can buy a clue.
We will need that oil for our wars in the middle east!  Iranian terrorists and Iraqs war aren't going to stop.  Baby sissy Obama will never win a war for America.  Vote for Bob Barr because McCain is not going to beat cheater Obama and only Barr can turn America back to real values and win our wars which liberalist babys can not.
Other great ideas from Barack Obama

1.  A healthcare plan that isn't mandatory but allows you to join if you have a pre-existing condition.  Why join when you are healthy and pay premiums (no matter how affordable).  Just wait until you need healthcare and then join with no penalty.  Perhaps they could have instant sign up in the emergency room?

2. A $4000 college tuition credit for 100 hours of community service.  Where else can an unskilled worker get a job that pays $40 per hour?  Why stop at students.  How about a $4000 mortgage credit for community service or a $4000 car payment.  I could cover my groceries for the year by doing 2 hours a weekend at the soup kitchen!

3. Tax every company that produces carbon, accept that they'll raise prices to consumers, and then rebate the consumers the tax that you've just raised.  Don't forget that the government will subtract $15b a year for research into renewable energy sources and the cost of the bureaucracy needed to collect the tax and calculate the rebate.  Also we'll need the government to distribute the grants from the $15b to worthy ideas.  Who gets to choose?  Remember Barack is a strong supporter of corn-based ethanol and that's a winner.  So far it's adding to global warming and driven up food prices.

BTW Does renewable energy exclude building a wind farm in Nantucket Sound because we don't want to ruin the view for Ted (Kennedy) and John (Kerry).

4. Deploy more troops to one of the most xenophobic countries in the world with no exit strategy, to fight terrorists who are actually in a neighboring country which is an ally.  However, he reserves the right to unilaterally attack the terrorist bases in the other country and  will accept the collateral damage that these attacks may incur. Do the names Vietnam and Laos mean anything?

5. To combat high energy prices he will impose a windfall tax on the oil companies and distribute a rebate check to everyone / every tax payer / car owners / truck owners.  Why stop there?  There is worldwide inflation in every commodity which is being passed on to the consumer so why not tax gold mines, steel producers, chemical companies etc.

6. Raise taxes to save Social Security.  This is a shell game.  There is no lockbox.  Currently more taxes are paid in than benefits are paid out.  The difference is used to buy government treasuries which in other words means it is used as current expenditure by the goverment of the day (Republican or Democrat).  Any increase would just be used by the current goverment to fund current year appropriations.  When the time comes that benefits exceed income the government (of the future) must pay the cost of the treasuries from current income i.e. taxpayers (of the future).  Either, the surplus must be stored in something other than treasuries e.g. stocks, bonds etc or benefits have to be cut; raise the retirement age so that the number of contributors can support the number of retirees.
Sure. Great idea. That will reduce gas prices by, oh, maybe a penny.

And Obama called it a "Preserve"???
Obama 08!!! The man is a leader.
He’ll [Obama] announce a “major commitment” to helping the auto industry build new factories or renovate existing ones to retool for the production of these new generation vehicles.

Let me guess. Rebate checks.
And, Mr obama, what if we have a cataclysmic disaster in the meantime? And, how will be replace it if you're going to impose tax burdens on the oil industry such that they won't produce? I favor drilling for more, but I'm not in favor of taking the oil that would have to sustain us in major disaster. Panderer!
That is immediate relief!

Obama 2008
the oil companies need to be taxed out of existence, take that money and spend it on alternative energy sources, it will be a painful transition but finding more oil only helps the oil companies, they need cut out of the loop, the oil companies intend to sell oil,
they have proven that they don't intend to invest in alternative energy, tax the &$@# out of them and give the money to someone who will.
I think what is being loss in all the charges of "flip flopping" by the main stream media is the fact that in order to GOVERN, one has to compromise.

It is of no use to the American people to have ideological purists throwing temper tantrums in the White House and Congress. It leads to the type of gridlock we have today.

Senator Obama is taking steps to build the "new working majority" he spoke often about in the Deomocratic primary, that can effectively govern, not just tell their base what they want to hear.

Senator Obama is saying that we can drill offshore, but that is not the answer. That's not a flip flop, that's common sense. Let's quit kicking the can down the road and make a REAL INVESTMENT in the future for once.
You wonder why many conservatives comentator and pundits die of Cancer...

kk, Boston

I dunno. Maybe ted would know?
He is NOW.  Obama does whatever the politics dictate. Sorry Pelosi, Obama bailed out on you.  He saw the way the winds were blowing and decided to change his position.  Better late than never, I guess.

Vote McCain to stop Obama and Socialism & New World Order.

WOW
will he be announcing his plan for the gas tax holiday soon?
how much do plug-in hybrids cost to purchase?

while offshore drilling MAY bring temporary relief, it is not a long term solution. America needs to get off their depedency on oil and start using alternative energy sources.
Now that's what I'm talking about.  GM just needs to bite the bullet, retool the factory and make all hybrids, lower the price, make it easy for Americans to get one and beat out all the other competition.  They just need to bite the bullet!
All states care about US auto factories...I'm sure if you take a nationwide poll...most folks would love to see this US industry retool and begin to thrive, which it hasn't for 20 years (there are auto plants all over the country)
That’s funny as soon as he saw Michigan is in play he has an announcement to help the Auto Industry????
Where have you been Berry? Where did all this concern come from????
NOT BUYING IT
The McCain camp is going to try and paint Senator Obama as another President Carter. And just like Ronald Reagan, Senator McCain doesn't have a whole lot of things to say about anything.

Ronald Reagan may have made people "feel good", however, in the end he really just looked out for the rich. There's plenty of documentation to back that up.

President Carter was a smart man, who tried very hard to connect with us on the energy problems we were facing. And he was right.

But for some reason in a political campaign, being right doesn't matter. Having a good education isn't what's important with the Republican Party.

They look down on that. Case in point: Ronald Reagan wanted to do away with the Dept. of Education.

John McCain is not going to solve any of our problems. Senator Obama will. That's why he's running.

To bring a decent & fair democracy back to this country. He's not arrogant. He's not "elitist". He's just a very smart man who worked very very hard to get where he is today. And he's still working hard to win over our support in November.

And you know what? Our president should be smarter than the rest of us. So don't buy into what the GOP is trying to do. It's all they have. It's all they ever had.

They can't govern. At all. But they can smear.

Watch closely how the MSM will focusely solely on the windfall profits tax part of Sen. Obama's energy plan. We'll hear very little, if anything, about the tax credits for hybrids and the plan to boost job growth in the auto industry. Mark it down - all we'll hear about are those taxes on profits. Over and over again... And McCain's plan was again? Oh, yeah - drilling.
Barack is again focusing on what needs to be done to help American workers, and reduce dependence on oil. It's time for McCain to do another SMEAR AND FEAR attack on Obama.  That's how it's been playing for the last few weeks. Independent voters will see who who has a plan for America. Nothing, nothing positive is coming from the McCain camp.

HAHA.I posted this earlier but it did not get posted. I thought I'd repost because it has already begun....

Today the Repubs are going back to the floor to discuss offshore drilling even though the August recess has begun. Over the weekend they screamed and yelled while the lights were off and invited tourists to the floor to chant U.S.A with them in the dark.
Mark my words. There tactics today will get full media attention. Why you ask? Because the oil companies invest major ad money in all of the major and minor news organizations. cbs, abc, nbc, fox, cnn and the list goes on and on.
Why americans cant see through this drilling gimmick is depressing. Why there is no mention of the millions of acres in this country that the oil companies already own and have not used is also depressing. I have not heard one news report about the fact that the oil companies already have this land but cannot use it because they cannot afford the equipment to get it out of the ground and even if they did, they don't have the refining capacity to make any use of it. No talking head reading reports from economists and energy experts that offshore drilling will at best reduce prices by 2 cents in 10 years. No news about how the US has not repaired drills and refineries damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Repairing those facilities alone would have a greater impact at the pump than a full offshore drilling plan.
We just cant win against against a political machine fueled with record oil profits and it is sad. They have the media. They have the White House. They have all of us in our pocket and unless someone in the MSM grows a set and starts reporting the facts we are all doomed to 4 more years of this garbage.
PS. I really love how Obama is up against big oil and there right wing friends. A nearly impossible bunch of people to beat. So he trys to broker a deal where he would sign off on there stupid offshore gimmick if the bill included some things on his energy plan. Now he's a flip flopper. So I guess in this day and age if a politician trys to solve a problem by compromise and giving folks from both sides of the aisle something to take from it that person is a flip-flopper. Well I say that person is a good politician.
Finnaly someone with an idea that doesn't make the oil companies richer and us poorer. Barak has been saying all along that we need imediate solutions. So the republics trot out a plan that can't conceivably help us for ten years and tell the American public that if they just think hard enough the phycology of the money market will change the oil futures. Then they do a little back room deals with their cronnies on wall street and in the towers of the oil companies and whalah!!!! the price per barrel drops a few dollars and man that phycology really works , doesn't it?
What do us latte' drinking birinstock wearing bla bla bla bla bla,s think they are doing suggesting we invest in our infrastructure and get people back to work. Or build massive wind farms and put people back to work. Or put solar arrays on as many houses and builings as the market will bear and put people back to work. Or build hydrogen fueled cars and put people back to work. Or build elctri cars and put people back to work. Mandate that all these things be done by American companies and start shiping out instead of in and put people back to work!
we need a candidate like Obama who will look at things realistically and try to help Americans with their problems. We don't need a candidate like McCain who looks out for big business interests instead of the little guy and who is willing to sell his soul to win an election.
Yeah and in 5 - 7 years when most working people still can't afford a new hybrid and Iran shuts down the straights we won't have our own oil to fall back on still. How is this going to help me today? It won't!!!
This gas crises really needs to be investigated exactly the way it is being looked at by the Obama campaign.

This is a big issue—one that needs a lot of thought. It really requires a long range strategy. A short one is giving money relief of some kind as a credit on taxes or rebates. Which should work for now.

I think they are on the right track.

For 8 years the government has been very rigid on these issues. Finally we will have a president that is really thinking of us and not just playing politics.

Off-shore drilling alone will not make a difference. It will take years and there is not even any equipment available to do it.

McCain knows nothing. Obama knows what he is doing. He will govern as he should.

Have a great birthday Barack and continue to think of working alternatives for us Americans.
That would make a nice compromise

Partial off shore drilling in exchange for:

tapping the Strategic Oil Reserve
Re-instating tax credits for alternative energy, solar, wind, etc
Raising CAFE fuel economy standards

If the Republicans want to pas energy elgislation and open up some new off shore fields....

Obama/Biden '08
Real reform, Real Change
BHO - He’ll announce a goal of putting one million plug-in hybrids on the road by 2015. These are cars capable of getting 150 miles to the gallon. This will be paired with a $7,000 tax credit for the purchase of these vehicles.

And in other news, Barack Obama announced that everyone should be happy, and he'll provide a $5000 tax credit to make sure that happens.
This is a genuine emergency!!! Americans are waking up to how democrats are screwing us into the ground so they can make more slaves. DRILL OR DIE DEMOCRATS!!! Talk to the freaks in their own language.
The release of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is no gimmick and does not pander to the voters.

This is no "psychological plan". This plan will have an immediate impact on the price of gas.  An increase in supply should result in a decrease in price.

Sure beats McCain's gas tax holiday.
How does a "plug-in hybrid" that runs on electricity get 150 miles to the gallon when no liquid is applied to the energy source of the motor?  Those numbers always seemed odd to me.

John MI

------------------

Numbers don't matter John. What matters is that Obama gives something for his supporters to parrot for the day.
'...As a native of the south, I can tell you, when you see this Charlton Heston ad, 'The One,' that's code for, 'he's uppity, he ought to stay in his place.'...'

From Huff Post:

'...Sam Steinstein@huffingtonpost.com

Gergen: McCain Using Code Words To Attack Obama As "Uppity"

On Sunday, longtime Washington hand David Gergen took umbrage with John McCain's recent attack ads, charging that the Senator was using coded messaging to paint Barack Obama as "outside the mainstream" and "uppity."

"There has been a very intentional effort to paint him as somebody outside the mainstream, other, 'he's not one of us,'" said Gergen, who has worked with White Houses, both Republican and Democrat, from Nixon to Clinton. "I think the McCain campaign has been scrupulous about not directly saying it, but it's the subtext of this campaign. Everybody knows that. There are certain kinds of signals. As a native of the south, I can tell you, when you see this Charlton Heston ad, 'The One,' that's code for, 'he's uppity, he ought to stay in his place.' Everybody gets that who is from a southern background. We all understand that. When McCain comes out and starts talking about affirmative action, 'I'm against quotas,' we get what that's about."

At the same time Gergen was calling out the Arizona Republican on ABC's This Week, Mike Murphy, McCain's campaign manager during the 2000 Republican primary, was describing the Senator's recent spot comparing Obama to Britney Spears and Paris Hilton as "clumsy, juvenile, and a mistake."

"I think it was a dumb ad," said Murphy, during an appearance on Meet The Press. "Not because it asked the question, 'is Barack Obama ready for the job?' That's a very legitimate criticism, and I think Barack Obama made it a little bit worse by his stumbling response later. The problem is that McCain -- McCain's strategy has to hinge, in my view, on one thing: how does a Republican survive in October and November a huge anti-Republican vote? Luckily for the party, McCain is a different kind of Republican. So everything in the campaign ought to build toward that case. And when if you get off into the small juvenile stuff about Britney Spears, I think you distract from that."...'

So much for Marerick McCain
McCain is diminishing himself
He's adopted the Rove style campaign tactics of lie and smear

Bye, bye John

Talk about Economic policy, Obama
Be SPECIFIC
That's what people want to know about

Answer his attacks with surrogates

You stick to the economic message
Mark in Seattle, you're right on point! Yes, it is very disappointing when the misinformed voter relies on the msm for all of their information, because the msm is bought out by big businesses (oil companies) also.

OBAMA/BIDEN, 2008!
Obama's proposals will cost a great deal of money, but not nearly as much as the $14 million an hour we are spending in Iraq!
John, MI (Sent Monday, August 04, 2008 10:48 AM)

A Hybrid by definition uses both a gasoline engine and an electric motor to provide power and in-motion battery recharging. The plug in simply insures that the battery is fully charged when parked overnight which substantially increases gas mileage.
Of course, Obama never discusses where he's going to get the electricity to charge up these cars. Electric power is projected to increase by 30% in the next 7 years. With everyone plugging in their cars, that will probably be more like a 100% increase.

Obama must know that electricity doesn't grow on trees.
. We'll hear very little, if anything, about the tax credits for hybrids
-------------
Bruce, what about the people who can't afford to buy a different car?  What's BO going to do for them? Re: plug in cars, I've heard several experts say that the current electricity infrastructure won't be able to support all the vehicles being plugged in.  And, before we can have plug in cars, we have to have the battery.  Of course, people scoffed at McCain for offering a "reward" for the person who could produce it.  So, nothing new from BO; he's just following McCain.
Obama LISTENED to the voters (which presidents are elected to do), and he LISTENED to a bipartisan committee that examined this issue. I guess after eight years of the Bush/McCain "my way or the highway" philosophy, the MSM and the Republicans no longer know what listening means?
We Women should not make a stink at the convention.

Think about it!!!

Hill said that she had 8,000,000 cracks in the ceiling. NOT!  Don't discount the millions that voted her because of RUSH and his plan to have her win so the REPs. could rally against her, or the other million that were not comfortable with having a multi-racial president, or the million that voted for her because they USED TO LIKE BILL, or the million that voted for her because of name recognition only.

Hillary ran a flawed campaign and is still in debt for running when it was clear she lost.  However Mr. Obama has managed to stay out of debt and above the frey the entire time.  She lost fair and square.

If the Hill supporters want to vote for McInSane OUT OF SPITE: be careful what you wish for, you just may get it... and if you are a woman or have daughters - may the LORD have mercy on your BAD DECISION THAT WILL HAUNT US FOR DECADES.

I'd like to be critical of what Obama says. But I find if I don't like what he's saying to day, just wait a little while for him to flip to the otherside.

Obama is killing his supporters. Most times they are defending Barack's position one day only to find out he had changed his position the previous day.
What are you doubters on here heard from McCain??!!

Obama is the only one offering SOME practical, workable solution; he's analyzing, adapting his proposals so that they WORK to cope with the changing market and conditions!!!  THAT IS CALLED SOLUTION & PROBLEM SOLVING!!  THAT IS CALLED GOVERNING!!  But you wonks in the Media will call it another Flip-Flop!

Wow How much did you guys really admire Tim Russert??  Or were those crocodile tears you shed(especially you Brokaw!!)!?

Because Tim would have you guys whipped into shape instead of all this tabloid, sensationalist CRAP!!!!
we need a candidate like Obama who will look at things realistically and try to help Americans with their problems
--------------------------------------------------
By hurling money at them, thereby encouraging them to look to the government for answers to their problems.   That's the kind of President this country needs!
his message is almost as scary as the posts here from his followers.  This will do absolutely NOTHING for our long term needs.

And the hybrid dream is nothing but corporate welfare.  What else could you call tax incentives to the consumer because the product can't be built cost effectively and only sold with this federally funded discount?
FTH-MO: '...And in other news, Barack Obama announced that everyone should be happy, and he'll provide a $5000 tax credit to make sure that happens...'

While McCain would provide a Billion dollar tax credit to Oil companies to make sure they're Happy !!

Take a nap John, you've had a long morning and you're getting cranky

That’s funny as soon as he saw Michigan is in play he has an announcement to help the Auto Industry????

And isn't it WONDERFUL that BHO now wants FL and MI seated at the convention when he fought and fought against their votes counting?  User.
Can someone tell me why this story hasn't made the news yet? It looks like the McCain camp intro the face on a US bill first. Now how is race baiting?
http://www.jedreport.com/2008/08/setting-the-rec.html
McCain's energy plan calls for offshore drilling in addition to researching alternative forms of energy.
I would not think that most Americans want to put our country at risk by releasing our oil reserves.

Kudos to the republicans today, calling for a vote on the energy bill, while pelosi is busy hawking her new book.
