Obama for tapping U.S. oil preserve

Posted: Monday, August 04, 2008 10:22 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli
On a conference call this morning, Obama energy advisers Elgie Holstein and Heather Zichal discussed the plan Obama will discuss today, including supporting the release of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Specifically, the campaign calls it a swapping out of light crude for heavy crude, which they say will be replaced when the market is less volatile.

Asked if this is a reversal, adviser Zichal says: “Sen. Obama has looked at this issue. He recognizes that Americans are suffering, that we have a unique situation with rising gas prices. And this is one occasion where we really need to look at this strategically and he made the decision that we do need to tap the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.”

The other new parts of the plan, per the campaign:

- He’ll announce a goal of putting one million plug-in hybrids on the road by 2015. These are cars capable of getting 150 miles to the gallon. This will be paired with a $7,000 tax credit for the purchase of these vehicles.

- He’ll announce a “major commitment” to helping the auto industry build new factories or renovate existing ones to retool for the production of these new generation vehicles.

*** UPDATE *** As Republicans point out, Obama was against tapping the preserve just earlier this month. “I do not believe that we should use the strategic oil reserves at this point," Obama said July 7. "I have said and, in fact, supported a congressional resolution that said that we should suspend putting more oil into the strategic oil reserve, but the strategic oil reserve, I think, has to be reserved for a genuine emergency. You have a situation, let's say, where there was a major oil facility in Saudi Arabia that was destroyed as a consequence of terrorist acts, and you suddenly had huge amounts of oil taken out of the world market, we wouldn't just be seeing $4-a-gallon oil. We could see a situation where entire sectors of the country had no oil to function at all. And that's what the strategic oil reserve has to be for.” (See video here.)

And, as BHO said, "when the light shines down and you have an epiphany" you'll realize tapping our stratetgic reserve is DUMB and leaves us with a national security risk.
Cindy Lou, TX- you're right!  Adults have conversations that includes compromises.  This is what Sen. Obama has always done (COMPROMISE) in the legislature.
I am continually amazed at how naive the average democrat supporter is regarding how the world really works. The strategic reserve is just that: a "rainy day" supply of oil for our country which like it or not would come to a grinding halt in rather short order without oil. This dependency for petroleum will not end any time soon regardless if John McCain or a "messiah" is elected. As far as "windfall profit taxes" this concept stated by Obama is proof perfect that he is a socialist. If he feels the government has the right to grab a legitimate company's profits then what else does he think the government has the power to do? This is a dangerous concept, one more closely related to communism than our proven system of capitalism. He is a scary guy and the democrats that have swooned over Bush's faults (real and imagined) should take note of Obama's philosophical bent.

Is the any doubt that John McCain is in the pocket of Big Oil?

The Republicans will never stand for this. Its a plan that might actually affect gas prices in the near-term.

The Republicans like to bluster about near-term prices while promoting policies that will lead to long-term increased oil company profits. Besides, anything that actually drops prices now would drop oil company profits now. Definitely not in the GOP's interests.
John, MI, your observations are unfair. A president is not supposed to lay out the engineering details of a plan.

Secondly, you don't seem to know much about hybrids, if you don't realize that they are not 100% electricity. Hybrid is short for hybrid combustion engine. They use electricity most of the time, the rest of the time is gas.

Thirdly, companies like Tesla overcame the lack of infrastructure by giving each car a power station that plugs into your home.

People like you disinform the public. That's why over 70% of people want Offshore drilling even though it does nothing for gas prices.
How can anyone be a proud McCain supporter????? The old man is a total nut job, Yes Cindy Lou in Texas you are right, and T. Boone Pickens is right, we can not drill our way out of this emergency, McNuts will say or do anything at this point. Can't wait for the debates, that ought to drive the old nut job over the edge!!!!!!
OBAMA----->> Sellout.  To be elected, will say and or do anything.  BO, too bad.  Your infectious brand of leadership is now a distant memory.  What other suprises, change of minds do you have for us?

When will we see your campaign commercial implying "vote for me or you are a racist. Because I do not "respect" you and or your daily changing views, does not make me a racist.  I just don't like you and your minions.

As I have said before, I am a minority and I will only vote for OBAMA if I see his face  appear magically on my daily morning tortilla.  Or, if he chan change water into wine.  I sincerely believe that all the poitive press has made BO's head bigger.

BO, you are now just another poitical, effete hack.

I don't give a hoot what you do.  You lost one Hispanic vote, and from what I am hearing you are losing many others.
