Obama focuses on energy, raps McCain

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli
LANSING, MI -- Seeking to refocus the campaign on proposals and not pop stars, Obama discussed additional plans on energy that he says would bring jobs back to this state and wean the nation off its oil addiction, something McCain would only worsen.

Obama actually began his remarks by agreeing with his Republican opponent, whom he quoted as saying that the dependence on foreign oil “was caused by the failure of politicians in Washington to think long term.” But he quickly added that McCain has been part of Washington for most of the last three decades, and “did little to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.”

“When Sen. McCain talks about the failure of politicians in Washington to do anything about our energy crisis, it’s important to remember that he’s been a part of that failure,” he said. “And now, after years of inaction, and in the face of public frustration over rising gas prices, the only energy proposal he’s really promoting is more offshore drilling -- a position he recently adopted that has become the centerpiece of his plan, and one that will not make a real dent in current gas prices.”

Obama, who last week himself said he might consider offshore drilling, reiterated today that he doesn’t think it is a “particularly meaningful short-term or long-term solution.” But he said he’s “willing to consider it if it’s necessary to actually pass a comprehensive plan.” Obama also called it “a political answer of the sort Washington has given us” for years, and referred several times to former oil man T. Boone Pickens.

“We can’t simply pretend, as Sen, McCain does, that we can drill our way out of this problem,” Obama said. “T. Boone Pickens is right. We need a much bolder and much bigger set of solutions.”

Obama’s proposals, he said, might sound “like pie in the sky,” but claimed that if adopted, could lead to enough renewable energy “to replace all the oil we import from the Middle East” in 10 years.

“So there is a real choice in this election,” he said. “Sen. McCain would not take the steps or achieve the goals that I outlined today... Like George Bush and Dick Cheney before him, he sees more drilling as the answer to all of our energy problems. And like George Bush and Dick Cheney, he’s found a receptive audience in the very same oil companies that have blocked our progress for so long.”

Referring to oil interests have donated to McCain's campaign, Obama said: “Make no mistake -- the oil companies have placed their bet on Sen. McCain. And if he wins, they will continue to cash in while our families and our economy suffer and our future is put in jeopardy.”

Obama was greeted here with a standing ovation, and, as has been the case for the last few days, a chorus of, “Happy Birthday” from the audience.

I am sure the main stream media will pick up this sensible speech and lead off the nightly news with the contents. Oh, wait, I think a whole lot of people are carrying around tire gauges. Now THAT'S NEWS!
What group was Obama speaking in front of, anybody know?
Who's writing this stuff for Nobama? Pelosi?
It's nice to see our next prez knows how to LISTEN and compromise with others to come up with the best solution on the many peoblems being left by GWB.

Obama / Biden  08
Obama's New Energy for American speech is a must read!  It is a call to arms.  It ushers in the green industrial revolution of the 21st Century. Once again, we can become a producing nation, rather than merely a nation of consumers.  Obama has meshed national security, energy, and jobs into one comprehensive plan to move the nation.   Obama delineated   very serious policies, not sound bites, for addressing the long-term and short-term issues that are having such a dramatic effect on people who are working and trying to make ends meet.  Obama offers our nation  new ideas and enthusiastic leadership to solve the massive issues that faced our nation.
Senator Obama is correct.  Mccain has been in Washington all these years and so he claims 'experience'.  However, mccain has no credibility to go with that 'experience'.

One of the Republicans own has left the titanic and only the Low Information Voters remain on deck.  As evidenced by the rhetoric being shared today by so many McCainiacs.  (My new term for dyed in the wool Repubs who will follow right on over the edge).

T. Boone Pickens = incredible wealth = Can't Drill Our Way Out of this = Alternative solutions.

Our oil reserve will be a joke and obsolete in 10 years; but it makes me laugh at the "defend it at all costs" approach by Repubs.  I liken it to the drawer full of Chuck E. Cheese coins in my son's drawer.  He's 14 and a half and if I mentioned taking him to Chuck E. Cheese to 'spend' them, he would be mortified.  Mostly because he held them long past their useful life.

I say we drain the oil supply as quickly as possible; because until it is gone, about half of the electorate can't even FATHOM alternatives, they just want to be sitting on the stock pile.  I don't believe for a minute that 'he who holds the oil holds the power'; but apparently the right wing seems convinced.  From my vantage point, 'he who holds the politicians, holds the power'.  That's been oil and the repubs for 8 long years.  I want out of this desert.  Sooner rather than later would be great for me.
IT WILL BE SO REFRESHING TO HAVE A PRESIDENT IN THE WHITE HOUSE WHO CAN SPELL "WHITE HOUSE" AMONG OTHER BASIC WORDS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE.

ONLY IN AMERICA DO SHEEPEOPLE WANT A PRESIDENT THAT IS DUMBER THAN THEM...TO REPRESENT THEM IN THE WHITE HOUSE! lol
Great! Obama should keep up with the economy and paint McCain as nothing more than another Republican that is in bed with the oil companies. Take away the offshore drilling issue - which such a useless thing to do anyway.

Hopefully, MSNBC can find some objectivity this week and report accurrately on these two candidates. McCain doesn't have ANY new ideas, he is only engaged in character assination and with the help of MSNBC has been somewhat successful.

Hopefully the people will see thru this by November and make the only reasonable choice. VOTE FOR THE SMART ONE - OBAMA!!!

I'm still not watching MSNBC until they get rid of the two racists Joe Scarborough and Pat Buchanon!

I think many people disagree with you Senator Obama. Starting additional drilling today will do much to stop the speculators from driving up the price of gas. But your party won't allow a vote in Congress on the bill. Who is standing in the way now Senator? And all because you are so connected at the hip with the radical environmentalists movement in this country.
Not Rich Yet (Sent Monday, August 04, 2008 10:08 AM)  Your optimism is so sweet.  But realistically, if you aren’t there, yet – your likelihood is pretty slim.  They guard that membership with a pretty well oiled machine.  As long as you keep bending over, I guess anything’s possible.
Stick to the issues Obama!  I am so happy to hear that you actually have a postive message geared towards Americans and not a negative campaign like John McCain.  I can't believe how low he and other Republicans will go...and that Americans really consider voting for JM.

Obama '08...the only choice for me

Looks like Obama is focused on actually trying to do something about gas prices, rather than playing to a political base.  Who's the maverick now?

Go Barack - it's your Birthday!
To my knowledge, Barack Obama has not proposed one thing that will increase the production of energy for the country. Not one! The country, and the world for that matter, are using more energy, not less. How many nuclear power plants has Obama propsed? Zero. How many new or expanded refineries has he proposed? Zero. Now he says he's for drilling, I guess before he was against drilling. It's hard to tell with him, he seems to change his mind sixteen times a day on the issue.
Want more pain ~ Vote for mccain

I love your screen name.  They need to make that a campaign slogan!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Who cares where the oil comes from? Its all sold to the world market at world market prices! Even if we produced 100% of our own oil we would still be paying the world market price, which we have almost no control over from the supply side as long as the nation of Saudi Arabia exists.
The only solution to oil prices is to come up with competitive alternatives!
I saw the speech. It was a great speech—full of information and good points—the kind of speech a thinking and intelligent person would give.

And it seemed doable, I really feel that we Americans are strong and powerful.

I just came back from vacation and saw folks already dealing with the gas crises. I saw many Priuses, folks walking, riding bikes to the store and mall. All looking determined and ready to adjust. Folks are learning to top off their tanks to get better mileage, etc.

As usual Barack is right. I hope that you the media will not engage in helping McShame and his hate machine to do further damage. You guys are not helping the situation. We ALL benefit when Barack is President. Barack is trying to run a decent campaign—please let him!!

I am glad Senator McCain is solving the nation's energy problems by offering supporters a tire gauge for donations.  He is such a leader.... Does the media not critique McCain's policy solutions because he has none?
BY THE WAY, WHAT HAS MCCAIN DONE FOR THE ECONOMY IN 30 YEARS IN WASHINGTON?

ANOTHER QUESTION...ISN'T THE ONLY MEASURE OF ONES MANAGEMENT SKILLS IS HOW THEY RUN THEIR CAMPAIGN?

IF SO, HOW ON GOD'S EARTH ARE WE TO THINK OF MCCAIN'S LEADERSHIP STYLE?

HASN'T HIS CAMPAIGN BEEN ERRATIC AS HE HAS BEEN?
Obama is on to something here. Agree with some of McCain's comments about our dependence on oil and the need to shake ourselves of this addiction but then come back and ask what McCain has tried to do about it over the last 30 years as a member of the Senate. Why all of a sudden does McCain call this a crises and thinks he has the answwers when he has had none for the last 30 years. Hitting hard on those donations to the Mccain campaign by big oil is another way of getting the voter's attention.

Anna Molly : good day to you. When I see your name pop up on here it gives me a smile. And yes, you can speak for me. I have no problem with that.

And welcome back Ira.
Oil money is big money and it would be on any republican, not just McCain.  Senator Obama is the candidate that will represent those Americans who make less than $100,000 annually for the next 4 or 8 years, not just during the campaign season.  And frankly McCain's mind is gone.  McDementia has got a blinking problem big time and as anyone will tell you...you blink more when you lie.
He is greeted with applause because the man MAKES SENSE!!!!  Not due to Celebrity 'fawning'!!!!

WHAT DO YOU STAND FOR MCINSANE!!????

NOW IS NOT THE TIME FOR YOUR . . . 'HUMOR'!!!

We have people DYING in Iraq, people LOSING THEIR HOMES and in some cases committing SUICIDE, joblessness added 51000 more members to those ranks, 500000 unemployment claims in a week, gas prices and food prices SKY HIGH . . .!!!

And all your camp can say is . . . LET'S have a little FUN!!!!???!!

IT'S NOT FUN OUT THERE YOU IDIOT!!!!
I am still waiting for someone to tell us what it is exactly that makes John McCain so much more qualified to POTUS than Sen. Obama...Just because he spent those years as a POW does not make him qualified. Remember, while he was a pow he was not getting any experience that would help him become the most important political in the world at this time. Sen. Obama is not an empty suit as a lot of people refer to him, but a well educated person that appears to have a handle on what we need as a nation.
"As Republicans point out, Obama was against tapping the [strategic petroleum] preserve just earlier this month."  (previous thread)

I must have missed something along the way.  I always thought republicans, and McCain in particular, were FOR candidates adjusting their positions based on "conditions on the ground."

When did that change?

Flip Floppers
“When Sen. McCain talks about the failure of politicians in Washington to do anything about our energy crisis, it’s important to remember that he’s been a part of that failure,” ....

Hey, wait a minute.....aren't both Obama AND McCain senators in Washington?  Can't blame one without blaming the other.  Unless you're Barack Obama.
Clara, Kansas City:

T. Boone Pickens is 100% for drilling.  You need to familiarize yourself with his whole plan, not just the commercial where he says "We can't drill ourselves out of this."

He says we need all domestic resources exploited to reduce dependency on foreign sources.  He supports drilling offshore, he supports drilling in ANWR, he supports a role for nuclear power.  He supports using abundant natural gas (requires drilling)resources and environmentally acceptable uses of vast coal reserves.  He supports use of the vast central U.S. wind corridor.

T. Boone Pickens also wants to make money.  He'll own a lot of windmills.  He is market oriented and sees an opportunity combined with a desire to use our own energy resources.

Senator Susan Collins of Maine would be happy to corroborate this.  He said it to her in a recent senate hearing.  Saw it on C-Span.  Not that hard to find.

Both candidates should embrace Pickens' plan.  But all of it, not just a sound bite that appeals to Clara from Kansas City.
Obama is spot on! Neither Hillary or McCain with their combined years of "public service" ever did anything to reform health care or America's dependence on foreign oil, until it served their purpose to do, namely running for President of the United States.  Hillary was given credit for child health care in the Primaries, but it was Ted Kennedy who led the charge on that one and deserves the credit for it, Hillary was too arrogant to work with anyone. As for the McCain ad, "the one", the only thing I saw was that McCain better fit the biblical mold for his own commercial (he's as old as time).
Obama needs to pick Biden as his VP. Obama can talk about the issues while Biden takes care of the trash coming from McCain and the GOP. Being that Obama tends to be mild and very composed I think Biden would be a very good contrast on the ticket.
I am still waiting for someone to tell us what it is exactly that makes John McCain so much more qualified to POTUS than Sen. Obama...Just because he spent those years as a POW does not make him qualified. Every issue and policy discussion that Obama gives he must debunk the McCain maverick myth, emphasize McCain = Bush and prove that McCain is old school not change.
They can’t govern.  At all.  But they can smear.  (Pat, Boston, MA – previous thread)

Pat – Great post, but for heaven’s sake, don’t leave out FEAR.

When that’s the hand you’ve got, that’s the hand you play.

For FEAR/SMEAR, vote McCain/Whoever 08

For REAL change, for a change, vote Obama/Richardson 08/12
Good ideas.  Thank you Mr. President (to be) !

I just love it how the liberals compliment and support each other around here. It's like a little self help encounter group for them. It's like they are asking each other 'We're right about this, right? Please say yes!"
Julie Corry, Elm Grove Villiage, GA (Sent Monday, August 04, 2008 1:26 PM)

Julie:

New drilling will not drop gas prices. Most oil companies will tell you that a majority of the areas inspected for oil in the gulf have turned up dry. Not worth their time drilling. Additional oil does little good unless you also build new refineries that will cost millions and that will be funded through high gas prices at the pump. Current refineries are functioning at full capacity.

New drilling although perhaps forstalling an eventual lack of oil due to competition wit hChina and limited supplies world-wide, etc. is a temporary fix. But as to any immeidate relief or as a long term solution it is a political gimmick. Instead of listening to politicans do some research. The only viable solution is some sacrafice (although it will hurt) from the Amercian people and an immediate and serious change to discover viable alternate sources of energy.
The Republicans are mocking Obama idea of checking your tires. This simple thing would save this country from importing 815,000 barrels of foreign oil.Do the Republicans think this is a joking matter?
I believe McCain has become irrelevant, but no matter; Obama is far and away the best presidential candidate we have had since JFK.  He can be compared to Kennedy and, yes, even Abe Lincoln. Obama has very similar political experience to these two young presidents, and he has comparable intellect, judgement, and charisma.  It is fortunate, indeed, that he has come at this crucial moment in our history; his abilities are desperately needed.
Mr. McCain,
What have you done in 25 years to avert the energy crisis  30 years in the making?
You made a speech a month ago!
Ready for Change
OBAMA 08
Hey Julie, before you start repeating the Republican talking points, why don't you do a little "digging" first.  The Repubs have been in office for over 7 years - why didn't they raise this point of drilling before now??  The oil companies have leases for hundreds of thousands of acres they can drill on - why haven't they drilled? Don't you see, this was the only way they could say something "negative" about the Dems.  Because they new that some people like you would just listen to them and not use their own brains and ask questions - like the ones above.
Get with the program and get smart.  It took the  repubs 7 years to get us into this mess - and you and them expect the dems to get us out instantly!!
Obama has stated he does not care about high gas prices, just at the speed of the rising of prices.  This was a nother speech that he offers no solutions and no new ideas, just blame big oil.

He is no different then Nancy Pelosi (the WORST house speaker in American history).  Nancy would rather be out talking about her book nobody is reading then dealing with critical issues.  This shows Pelosi and the do nothing congress could care less about single mothers, who have to choose between milk for their children and gasoline so they can get to their jobs.

Obama Voter (Sent Monday, August 04, 2008 1:26 PM)

Obama voter—I read you. Those two make me sick. Such arrogance, nastiness and unprofessional anger. And both of them really have nothing to show for themselves. Go figure!

I still watch MSNBC a little, but when they are on I turn off the station.

By the way:

The Democrat most likely to succeed Ted Stevens in Alaska is 100% in favor of developing and drilling in ANWR.

Found that on his website.
Don't forget to wish Obama a happy 47th Birthday!

https://donate.barackobama.com/page/contribute/pf?outreach_page_id=45154
I checked other news sites to see what group Obama was speaking in front of, but they all just called it "a crowd" in Lansing, Mich. So "a crowd" gave Obama a standing ovation and, I believe, "a crowd" will elect him Presdient in November. Meanwhile, McCain tries to riducle Obama by handing out tire gauges to the press. (?) Since when is educating drivers about raising their MPG's by properly inflating tires a bad idea? And why are McCain's handlers picking on the Press? Seems like alot of their jokes are aimed at the poor saps in the traveling press corps. McCain: Leave these reporters alone!
ANWR & the off-shore sites ARE our RESERVES for the FUTURE. People want to poke them now without thinking about future generations needing plastics ect. make with oil for medical & other uses. Previous blog has people addimately protecting the current underground reserves by DRILLING our largest reserves. Nice forethought, hope your grandkids can forgive you....
So Clara:

Either you are for dismantling and paralyzing our entire Army, Navy and Air Force or you're OK with them going 100% nuclear or back to sail boats.

I'm also thinking that earth moving machines (highway construction etc.) probably won't be running on electric or wind power anytime soon.  I think it takes great big diesel powered trucks to haul those massive wind turbines to their locations.  Will you make an exception for that?

Or do you just wish to take away the benefits of oil related products from all the little people?
If you think increased domestic production will lower, your price at the pump, check out Alberta, Can.,the largest supplier of U.S. oil.  The price at the pump in Calgary was $1.25 to $1.30 per liter last week when I was there. That equates to $5.30 per gallon!! Higher than we pay.  Bottom line is that off shore drilling may help the bottom line of the oil companies, but why would anyone think that they would all of a sudden to an about face and lower the price to the consumer..It won't happen...reducing our use of oil is the only sure way to reduce our price.....
I think many people disagree with you Senator Obama. Starting additional drilling today will do much to stop the speculators from driving up the price of gas. But your party won't allow a vote in Congress on the bill. Who is standing in the way now Senator? Many people Do disagree with Obama - but not most, and those who do are not right.  You whine about not having a vote in congress about offshore drilling, which by the way won't put a dent in our gas prices for a long time, if ever.  Why didn't your (R) senators and reps vote on this at any other time in the past 7.5 years, including when they had the majority?  Because they didn't care - it wasn't a political hotbutton then.  They were all too busy counting up the profits in their portfolios and their contributions from big oil...
