Obama camp on small businesses

Posted: Monday, August 04, 2008 2:54 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Alex Wall
Fresh off Obama’s speech on energy earlier today, his campaign wasted no time in attacking McCain on his small business plan. Rep. Nydia Velazquez (D-NY), chairwoman of the House Small Business Committee, and Obama campaign Director of Economic Policy Jason Furman called McCain’s small business plan a “laundry list of benefits for corporate America,” in a conference call this afternoon.

Furman blasted McCain’s corporate tax proposal, which he said calls for $4 billion in tax breaks to oil companies (including $1.6 billion to ExxonMobil), while citing “McCain’s lack of tax breaks for small businesses.”

Velazquez added that most small-business owners wouldn’t benefit from McCain’s tax plan, arguing that the group makes up only 4% of the taxpayers in the top income bracket. She contrasted the two candidates by touting Obama’s support for targeted investments into small business, while criticizing McCain for his lack of support for small business legislation.

“Sen. McCain is supporting the same tax policies that have been supported by President Bush,” Velazquez said.

On Obama’s tax proposals: Furman called Obama’s plan an “overall business agenda” and pointed to two “key” small business tax credits in Obama’s plan: (1) a health care tax credit, and (2) an exemption from the capital gains tax. When asked to define a cutoff for how small a business had to be to qualify for the health care credit, Furman said, “It would be more than 10 employees” yet wouldn’t give an exact number before working with the Treasury.

“The key thing is to lower the cost of health care for small businesses,” Furman said.

Capt. Smash, Salt Lake City, Utah, in answer to your question, McBush will sell the average American voter the same old politics of the past...His only purpose as a Republican mouth peace and puppeteer is to continue Bush's great legacy to America the record level of $490 billion while the media look the other way!
Barack Obama - is absolutely marvelous, if anyone wants a President in every since of the word you have to know Barack Obama is it..

If we want to bring dignity back to American oval office then you have to know Barack Obama will do this.

IF we want to have our constitution honored the way it was meant to be by our fore fathers  then we know Barack Obama will do it..

Having said that we must not allow John McCain to become President, we will fight the GOP to the bitter end.

Evil has plagued our country for the past 8 years - it's time to live in harmony.

But, I do have a question for John McCain - How is it you were in the senate for 26 years - you brag and use your POW status as a point to be qualified for CIC.

You have Fox News and other national station working on your behalf - you also have Karl Rove (at least his surrogates) working on your behalf, the oil companies are giving you millions of dollars - and yet you consider yourself the underdog - against someone you claim has no experience and is not CIC material.

INTERESTING??? Care to explain, or will you do another ad  to avoid what we already know.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
Did i hear people watching fox news or faux news? Faux news is only meant to brain watch average Americans. Please stop watching faux propaganda channel and watch real channel like MSNBC - precisely Keith Olberman and Dan Abraham. The rest of the pundits are lame - especially Joe Scarborough and David Gregory

I sure hope they cancell David Gregory show because it is so lame. The only sensible person on that show is Eugene Robinson, Rachael Maddow and Mike Smarconish
GA, Edgewood, KY...

You Obama supporters really need to get off the kool-aid and start to think logically.
-----------------------------------------------------

yeah, like you did when you voted this administration into office?  Logical... was it logically stupid on your part to vote the way you did in 2000 and 2004?

there was an article in the paper a few days ago about MR. T BOONE PICKINS AND THE ENORMOUS PROFITS HE AND HIS COLLEAGUES WILL MAKE IF HE GETS HIS PLAN THROUGH.

THEY WILL REAP BILLIONS IF NOT TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS AND THE PLAN IS NOT GEARED TO HELP ANY ONE BUT THE RICH AGAIN.  AS ONE BLOGGER SAID, BE CAREFUL AND STAY ABREAST OF THE PIT FALLS.

WE THOUGHT IT WAS AGAIN ABOUT BIG OIL, BUT WE SAID MAYBE NOT, UNTIL THE PAPER GAVE THE PLAN AND TOLD HOW MR. PICKENS HIS BIG OIL FOLK WILL REAP THE USUAL BILLIONS IF NOT TRILLION OF DOLLARS.

WE NEED THE ACTUAL EXPERTS, ENERGY, ECONOMIST, THOSE WHO HAVE NO ""FINANCIAL INTEREST" AND WHO CAN PROVIDE A PLAN WITH ALTERNATIVES THAT'S NOT PREPARED WITH MOTIVES FOR ANYONE TO GET RICH OFF THE PUBLIC ONCE AGAIN.
Irvin in Houston,

I'm afraid I don't believe Obama's tax plan is the real reason you're voting for McFossil.
Hey Curious; "how curious are you??"

Both facts were reported this past week, sourced to (I know you guessed it...) You very own Federal Government!!

GWB's energy team says keeping tires properly inflated can save as much as 12 cents per gallon. (Right Now)

Drilling (Everywhere) gives us about 6 cents per gallon in about 10 to 12 years.

Now go back and also fully understand Barack's statement; it was 'tongue in cheek', simply pointing out that the pennies saved from both proposals, even taken together, does not even get us out of the woods!!

(It is totally coincidence that the Fed Gas Tax is about 18 cents per gallon)...

Stop grasping at straws and open your eyes to see the truth Barack Obama is presenting to you. We are in serious trouble, and "gimmicks" ain't gonna get it!! We either start doing all we can as Americans RIGHT NOW: "WHILE" planning for the future; or we suffer the consequences!
