Pickens compliments Obama energy plan

Posted: Monday, August 04, 2008 6:06 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Mark Hudspeth and Domenico Montanaro
After Obama mentioned T. Boone Pickens several times in his energy speech today, Pickens -- not kidding -- had praise for the presumptive Democratic nominee.

“I’m strongly encouraged by Senator Obama’s speech on America’s energy future. Foreign oil is killing our economy and putting our nation at risk," wrote Pickens, a billionaire oil man, who proposes ending America's dependence on oil by promoting renewable enegies like wind power and natural gas. Pickens was one of the principal financiers of the Swift Boat ads against John Kerry. “When I started this campaign my goal was to make this the biggest issue in the coming election and the top priority to be addressed in the first hundred days of the next administration.  This issue is clearly moving up in the priority of political debate; Senator Obama’s statement is an indication that is what is indeed happening. I will continue to push this as a priority for the rest of the year.”

Earlier, in Obama's speech, the Illinois senator said, “We can’t simply pretend, as Sen, McCain does, that we can drill our way out of this problem,” Obama said. “T. Boone Pickens is right. We need a much bolder and much bigger set of solutions.”

You have to applaud Pickens. He's got money, but he cares about the country. I don't know how smart pushing natural gas is when we could just skip a step and focus on renewable energy/fuels instead. But he definitely has something with wind.

It's strange that he didn't just push his agenda thru the republican machine. He knows they are beholden to big oil.
That is what we need republicans supporting him.
Seriously, this ridiculous show off in congress speaking to themselves as if the country was falling apart if we do not drill.
Where were they when we needed to begin using solar energy and wind energy 20 years ago?
Ok. Mr. Pickens is on board. Where are you Sen. McCain?  I dont hear you, all I see you do is blast Sen. Obama. But I dont "hear" you. Does that mean that I am out of touch? Whatever, sir.
THAT'S RIGHT NO MORE SWIFT BOAT, TIME FOR CHANGE TIME FOR A CANDIDATE THAT ACTUALLY CHECKS THE FACTS, DOES NOT POLL FOR A QUESTION FOR WHICH WE NOR HE HAS THE EXPERTISE TO MAKE DECISIONS.

IT'S IRRESPONSIBLE FOR THE MEDIA OR JOHN MCCAIN AND THE REPUBLICANS TO POLL ABOUT WHETHER DRILLING IS GOOD FOR AMERICA

ITS THE EXPERTS JOB TO MAKE SUCH DETERMINATIONS, CRAFT A PLAN WITH ALTERNATIVES AND PRESENT THE PLAN TO CONGRESS AND THE AMERICAN PEOPLE

POLLING HAS NOT PLACE ON SUCH A KEY ISSUES THAT AFFECTS OUR CHILDREN'S LIVES.  AMERICANS MUST STOP FALLING FOR POLLING QUESTIONS THAT REQUIRE EXPERTISE FROM SOMEONE IN THE AREA BEING POLLED.

AMERICANS NEED AS SEN. OBAMA HAS DONE CHECK WITH THE EXPERTS IN ENERGY AND ECONOMISTS AND THEN PROPOSE A PLAN SUCH AS SEN. OBAMA HAS TO FIX THIS PROBLEM OVER THE LONG TERM.

GOOD FOR T. BONE PICKINS SHOWS HE'S SERIOUS ABOUT HELPING AMERICA GET OUT OF THIS MESS CAUSED BY THE REPUBLICANS WHO STILL REFUSE TO WORK  WITH BI-PARTISNSHIP TO SOLVE THE ISSUE
Obviously Pickens (like unAmerican Warren Buffet) is a closet Socialist.

We NEVER see him wearing a flag lapel pin, and what church has HE been attending for the past 20 years?

Another "empty suit" this lib Pickens is...and we've NEVER heard him actually deny that he's a Muslim, have we?
It looks like Obama camp is not responding aggressively enough ...We understand to be a change candidate ...may not play the same old politics (or ads) ...but in order to move on from change candidate to actually get to WH to make changes in the country -there is a need to be aggressive - coz that could be the way ...in this election it will need to be done.

(1) Lets go from a 4 day response cycle to 24 hr cycle
(2) Lets use language that is resonating with the folks
(3) Lets have a theme a week - where every gaffe and policy issue is tied to this theme ...and ads made to reflect 1, 2 and 3
Interesting. I was wondering when Pickens name would start popping up on the campaign trail. As someone not incredibly familiar with the 'Pickens Plan', I do have respect for someone who is making a bold statement about energy independence. I am a bit confused however about the how Pickens Plan views in role of Natural Gas in our energy future. Is that a good thing? To be considering natural gas as a major source of energy in our future?
There is one part of Obama's energy plan that is downright frightening.  The act of increasing taxes on oil company profits and redistributing the money to others.

This is unbelievable to me.  Corporations and business' exist for only one reason ... to make money.  That is the purpose of capitalism.

That is as well the same reason most Americans (er, excuse me ... "some" Americans) work: to make money to pay bills and buy 'stuff.'

So, companies and individuals make money by working.  Then along comes Obama and he wants to penalize someone for being successful.  He thinks if he calls the fruit of their labors some ugly name like "windfall profits" that it will appear that the companies' earnings were ill-gotten instead of legitimately earned.

The U.S. government is already taxing American companies at a higher rate than other foreign countries.  Example: One reason Anheuser Busch sold out to a company based in a foreign land was because the taxes are lower than in the U.S.A.

But the scariest part of this scenario is what industry is next?  Who next will Obama decide has earned too much money and needs to give it away to people who have not worked as hard?

How long will it be before American based companies see the light and start moving their operations out of America to escape the socialist desires of Mr. Obama?

Please Obama, whoa, hold-up, stop for a minute and get a brain.
