Veep Watch PM

Posted: Monday, August 04, 2008 6:24 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From Matthew Berger and Carrie Dann
THE SHORT LIST:
The perfect storm of a long trip to Indiana and the pre-Olympics timing further fuels the veep speculation around Sen. Evan Bayh. A Huffington Post blogger lays out the hints that would point to a decision Wednesday, but later updates to say that Democrats in his universe say they haven't seen any indication that the announcement will come this week.

The first question Rep. Eric Cantor got on a McCain campaign conference call about energy was about his veep aspirations and reports he’s been vetted. Cantor refused to take the bait.

Rep. Chet Edwards says thanks for asking, but please stop asking: “I am deeply grateful to Speaker Pelosi for her gracious comments about me and my work in Congress on behalf of veterans and military families,” he said in a statement. “Senator Obama has earned the right to manage his own vice presidential selection process, and out of respect to him, any questions about the process should be directed to the Obama campaign.”

ON THE RECORD: In case you were wondering, Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter confirms that he's not on Obama's short list.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said again to Fox News’ Neal Cavuto today that he doesn't have any indication he’s on a short list. But he casually pointed out that he COULD be, and just doesn't even know it. “I don't expect it. I never have,” he said of veep speculation. “And, frankly, I think if they want to look at me, they could do it in a lot of other ways. I've pretty well been out there on the public stage now for a while having been a candidate. So it probably wouldn't even be necessary.”

WHAT THEY’RE DOING: Bayh joined Obama in signing a letter to the Pentagon, urging increased medical funding for care of Iraq war veterans who have suffered traumatic brain injuries. Sens. Hillary Clinton and Joe Lieberman signed the letter as well, but Bayh’s is on top.

Clinton is wined and dined tonight at a reception with NYC mayor Mike Bloomberg

Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius will be the featured speaker on Wednesday at a major Democratic fundraiser for Obama in Leelanau County, Mich. (Why Michigan? The local paper notes that she has ties to the area, where "her family has kept a summer home for decades.")

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal declares state of emergencies in several coastal parishes ahead of Tropical Storm Edouard.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty speaks to Farmfest 2008, an agricultural trade show, on Tuesday in Morgan, Minn.

CHATTERING CLASS: Jeffrey Goldberg notes that Cantor misspoke and said Obama had called Israel a “constant sore” -- Obama made the comments about the Middle East conflict -- and never apologized.

The New Republic's Eve Fairbanks assesses that Sebelius is " just more impressive" than Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine

JUST FOR FUN: You too can own a “Mitt for Veep” poster. The signs touting former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for vice president have been seen in Washington, prompting at least one person to think a decision had been made. Turns out its just clever merchandising.

Sebelius. nuff said.
Bayh's the Democratic version of Ambien.
I love to watch those pundits on TV debate about who is and isn't good for the job of VP.  however, sometimes i find myself wondering whether they remember the real reason there is a VP: to take the place of the President if anything were to happen.  i don't care if the VP is charismatic; i just want someone who will do a good job of being president if anything were to happen.
to clarify a somewhat confusing report--

Jeffrey Goldberg said "Eric Cantor, the Virginia congressman,... is now being talked about as a possible vice presidential pick for John McCain, and this news reminded me that Cantor has never retracted a particularly stupid attack launched against Barack Obama a couple of months ago. Obama referred to the Middle East conflict as a "constant sore." The Republican House leader, John Boehner, and Cantor, one of his deputies, willfully misreading Obama's comment, and, trying to scare Jewish voters away from Obama, accused him of calling Israel itself a "sore." This, of course, is complete nonsense, and I let Boehner's office, and Cantor's office, know that it was complete nonsense. So far, though, no sign of a retraction. Cantor, who is said to be brighter than Boehner, should know better than to launch such foolish, unethical and refutable attacks."

--- will lie for political power; sound like McCain VP material to me.
Huckabee could never be McCain's VP; he has an ethical problem -- he has ethics.
Is McCain still wearing $500 shoes while calling Obama elitist?
Bill Richardson is head and shoulder above all the people being vetted for the VP spot.He has by far the best resume of any candidate.
whomever sen. obama chooses, we have confidence based on his outstanding judgement to date that he will choose the appropriate person.
Hope this gets posted

A belated (very) Happy Birthday to Senator Obama - and wishes for many, many more!

This is too good to past up...
McCain: I'll Come Back To Senate For Oil

On Monday, John McCain lambasted Congress for adjourning without passing an energy bill, saying he'd be willing to "come off the campaign trail" and return to Washington if Democratic leadership would simply "come off of vacation" and go to work on off-shore drilling.

"The Congress, doing nothing, decided to go on a five-week recess,'' said McCain. "Congress should come back into session... and I'm willing to come off the campaign trail."

If he follows through on his threat -- and it seems incredibly unlikely -- it would mean that the promise of more oil did what equal pay for women, greater veterans benefits, and a bevy of environmental and energy issues have not: mainly, persuade McCain to actually return to the Senate. Indeed, by this point in time, the nation's capital is likely foreign land for the presumptive Republican nominee. In all, McCain has missed 63.3% of votes in the 100th Congress: 399 votes all together.

Here are a few of the most notable issues that, unlike off shore drilling, couldn't persuade the Senator into legislative action:

-Medicare Reimbursement Cuts, 7/9/08

-The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, 7/9/08

-The New GI Bill, 6/28/08

-A $44 Billion Stimulus Package (McCain was in D.C. at the time) 2/7/08

-Equal Pay Legislation, 2/23/08

-All 15 Key Environmental Votes, according to the League of Conservation Voters

Please, anybody BUT Governor Mitt Romney!  That man is a prodigious flip-flopper.

He has flip-flopped on a virtual smorgasbord of issues, including, but not limited to: abortion, gay rights (ENDA), a marriage amendment, and several gun rights (the Brady Bill and a federal assaults weapon ban.) He consistently paints himself as a second Reagan, yet he once said "I'm not trying to return to Reagan-Bush." He is a liberal with a Republican face-lift. The man is an opportunist.

Take a look one of his OLD campaign ads paid for by the Log Cabin Republicans:

http://njmccain.blogspot.com/2007/10/romney-im-not-trying-to-return-to.html

A few of his many flip-flops:

ABORTION

From the Left:

Romney ran against Senator Edward M. Kennedy in 1994. During a debate, Romney declared: "I believe that abortion should be safe and legal in this country. I have since the time that my mom took that position when she ran in 1970 as a US Senate candidate. I believe that since Roe v. Wade has been the law for 20 years we should sustain and support it."
- Boston Globe, March 2, 2006

"I respect and will protect a woman's right to choose."
-2002 Questionnaire for the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL)
Boston Globe, July 3, 2005

From the Right:

"I am pro-life. I believe that abortion is the wrong choice except in cases of incest, rape, and to save the life of the mother. I wish the people of America agreed, and that the laws of our nation could reflect that view. But while the nation remains so divided over abortion, I believe that the states, through the democratic process, should determine their own abortion laws and not have them dictated by judicial mandate."
- Boston Globe, Op-Ed, July 26, 2005

More from the Right:

"Every decision I have made as Governor in a very liberal state has been on the side of favoring life." – Governor Romney

- Robert Behre, "Romney Gets S.C. Support," Charleston Post-Courier, January 30, 2007

GAY RIGHTS

From the Left:

"All citizens deserve equal rights, regardless of their sexual orientation. While he does not support gay marriage, Mitt Romney believes domestic partnership status should be recognized in a way that includes the potential for health benefits and rights of survivorship."
- Romney's 2002 campaign website

"Mitt and Kerry Wish You a Great Pride Weekend! All citizens deserve equal rights, regardless of their sexual preference"
- A flier handed out at "Gay Pride" by the Romney/Healey Campaign

"We have discussed a number of important issues such as the Federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which I have agreed to co-sponsor, and if possible broaden to include housing and credit, and a bill to create a federal panel to find ways to reduce gay and lesbian youth suicide, which I also support. One issue I want to clarify concerns [grammar in context] President Clinton's "don't ask, don't tell, don't pursue" military policy. I believe that the Clinton compromise was a step in the right direction. I am also convinced that it is the first of a number of steps that will ultimately lead to gays and lesbians being able to serve openly and honestly in our nation's military. That goal will only be reached when preventing discrimination against gays and lesbians is a mainstream concern, which is a goal we share…"
- Governor Romney letter to Log Cabin Republicans, October 6, 1994  Read the letter

From the Right:

Lopez: "And what about the 1994 letter to the Log Cabin Republicans where you indicated you would support the Federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) and seemed open to changing the "don't ask, don't tell" policy in the military? Are those your positions today?

Gov. Romney: "No. I don't see the need for new or special legislation. My experience over the past several years as governor has convinced me that ENDA would be an overly broad law that would open a litigation floodgate and unfairly penalize employers at the hands of activist judges...As for military policy and the 'don't ask, don't tell' policy, I trust the counsel of those in uniform who have set these policies over a dozen years ago. I agree with President Bush's decision to maintain this policy and I would do the same."
- Interview with National Review, December 14, 2006  Read the interview

MARRIAGE AMENDMENT

From the Left:

In 2002, before the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court declared same-sex marriage protected by the Constitution, Romney denounced as "too extreme" the effort by pro-family groups to enact a preemptive state Marriage Protection Amendment prohibiting homosexual marriage, civil unions and same-sex public employee benefits.
- Boston Phoenix, May 14-20, 2004

From the Right:

MSNBC's Joe Scarborough: "Do you support a national constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage?"

Governor Romney: "Boy, I sure do. You know, that's a topic that's really, I think, very important to the country because marriage is not just about adults. Marriage is about the development and nurturing of kids, and in my view, the development of a child is enhanced by having a mom and dad. And so, I think it's very important that we have a national standard because marriage is a status. You get married in one place and then you move to another, you're still married at least in the eyes of the community and the children and the benefits may not follow you, but ultimately we're going to have one standard of marriage in this country and that standard ought to be one man and one woman."
- MSNBC's "Morning Joe" September 17, 2007

GUN RIGHTS

From the Left:

"He [Romney] is a supporter of the federal assault weapons ban."
- Romney 2002 campaign website

More from the Left:

In his 1994 US Senate run, Romney backed two gun-control measures strongly opposed by the National Rifle Association and other gun-rights groups: the Brady Bill, which imposed a five-day waiting period on gun sales, and a ban on certain assault weapons.

"That's not going to make me the hero of the NRA," Romney told the Boston Herald in 1994.

At another campaign stop that year, he told reporters: "I don't line up with the NRA."
- Boston Globe, January 14, 2007  Read the article

From the Right:

"Americans should have the right to own and possess firearms as guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution," said Governor Romney. "I'm proud to be among the many decent, law-abiding men and women who safely use firearms."
- Governor Romney, News Release, January 12, 2007
I just wonder if the vetting process is meant to throw everybody off track.  I think both  choices will be big suprises!
Why is there no discussion of Kathleen Sebelius as VP. She was on the "short list" but correspondents only talk about Bayh, Biden, or Kaine. My question is this, do any of these guys bring more votes than Kathleen Sebelius? People are also saying he can't pick her because of upsetting Hillary supporters. Can someone give me an approx. number on that? Peace out
Harball rehashed this VeepStakes thing again today. They still are really certain McSame is picking Mitt wRongly. In as much as I can see, he may very well be the only true choice McSame has. My reasoning is simple, Mitt wRongly is probably the only one of the final contenders who would willing sign on to the nasty, dishonestly-run, vitriolic, substance-free, slime fest that IS the McCain campaign. So in this case 2 wrongs DO mean they're right...for each other any way.
Eve Fairbanks is right -- Sebelius is WAAAY more impressive than Kaine. I'm not really sure that matters, though. I still think Obama's going to pick a boring policy wonk. Or, if he really wants to mess with McCain for trying to make him pick first, he could pick Hillary the day before the Olympic Opening Ceremonies. That'd be fun... though I'm not entirely certain Hillary is the best person for the job. She, like Obama, would've made a fine nominee; but I have a very hard time seeing her playing second-fiddle. She'll better serve New York and the country in the Senate.

I'd like to think that Obama's going to put in Joe Biden or Brian Schweitzer, but I think the one who's really getting serious consideration is Jack Reed. That could open the door for Biden as Secretary of State and Chuck Hagel as Secretary of Defense. Or Biden could be the veep nominee, with Hagel as Sec. of State and Reed Sec. of Defense. Really, he can't lose with any combination of those three.
The most clever move the McCain campaign can make is to add Governor Huckabee to the team as vp. In case you hadn't noticed, Governor Huckabee continues to gain support, even while the media gives him no respect!! In June survey usa election polls showed he helped McCain's ticket better than Romney, Pawlenty or Lieberman. These were taken in 8-10 swing states even MA!! 2 months go by with NO vp speculation showered on Huckabee by the media and, lo and behold, the Rasmussen polls show Huckabee has GAINED ground and now helps McCain a full 8 pts!!  Pawlenty +1 and Romney actually a minus 6!!!  I am so sick of media trying to paint Huck as a one dimensional candidate when he has a HUGE broadbase support group as varied as the population itself! The more we see of Huckabee, the better we like him!  He brings character, integrity , fresh ideas and over a decade of experience to the table and as Republican stategists said of him several mths. ago (when they gave him media) there is NO ONE who can EXCITE the base, like Mike Huckabee...... Will the McCain camp pull off the biggest political koo of this election and knock the pundits off their game like Super Tuesday???? Only time will tell......
Is this the man you want with his finger on the trigger? He throws out a comment that leaks "intell" and he was flat wrong. McCain is an idoit, America here is you chance to make a difference:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlAUj4s6sT0

McCain not the leader I want. Unfortunately there is a reference to his wife, my objection is tot McCain ONLY: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXU6s7iSXzs&NR=1

Ultimate McCain:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEtZlR3zp4c

Obama is not the perfect POTUS candidate, however is hands above over McCain

Cantor and "constant sore."  I see he's passing his audition with flying colors.  What McCain wants is another attack job who'll throw up more unsubstantiated claims and ridiculous smears.

I'm sick of this:  Offshore Drilling is a complete BS scam.  It's big oil's last hail mary to try to fool the voters to vote Republican again.  All they want is land.  They have 80 million acres of perfectly good land with oil and gas underneath that they can, and don't want to drill.

As for Bayh, best choice for Obama.  If he holds PA and MI, which he likely will, all he needs is one of six--CO, VA, OH, FL, MO, or IN--and he clinches it.  Bayh is a popular senator, and he was a phenomenal governor.  And, he probably wants to be President in eight years.  The only negative is losing that senate seat.
This is getting to be just like a game of whack-a-mole -- possible candidates stick their heads up and the media hits them with mallets.  The only one NOT to get whacked is it.

I do believe this is as fair and objective a method for choosing the VP as anything else I've seen so far.  And probably just as likely to produce a good result.  Sheesh.

Glenn Thrush over at Politico had this bit of news to share!
***"Hillary Clinton will campaign for Barack Obama this Friday in Nevada and hit the Miami area on Aug. 21 for a fundraiser and rally as part of a pre-convention unity swing, according to people close to Clinton. "She's flying solo," said a source familiar with the events, although there's "a chance" Obama could join her in Nevada. "***

This weeks Buzz....Hillary-Veepstakes...  that "chance" Obama could join her in Nevada, I think will have people chatting all week!!.
McCain Has the Same problem as Obama, There is not one out there that can fill the requirements as VP! Congress is derailed and a failure, so who would want one of those clowns as a VP?
Obama/Bayh announced tomorrow
Cantor's misspeak falls right in line with the rest of the republican's campaign to lie, cheat, and steal if needed this year.

I see why they may be looking at him so much, it seems that he too do not have a moral compass.  That's what loosing your bearing  means.  It has nothing to do with age just your willingness to stray off to say and do anything that my make you look good to those that are not paying attention.
Obama latest poll #'s on "white working class voters" 57%-37%. hahaha...chew on that Joe S. you bitter old fool.

Obama/Biden
Let's all just relax. When the VPs are picked they will be picked. All this VP Watch is frankly getting quite boring. The American people will cast their vote depdning on who they want for President. VP candidates will have little impact on the outcome of this race. And the VP selections will not necessarily help the Presidential candidate carry the State they are from. In closing I'll say I hope McCain picks Romney. The guy is an idiot. He is practicallly begging to be VP. Romney will help Obama more then McCain.
What did Bayh have for breakfast? There could be an important clue there...

Last night I was talking with someone who didn't understand the tire inflation thing wasn't part of Obama's energy plan. And this person watches the news quite a bit. This really struck home. How would she know? The news programs she watches never explained that.

Obama did suggest to someone that she inflate her tires properly and keep her engine tuned. This was in response to a question she had about what she could do to save gas.

McCain of course picked up on this, resulting in the childish gag with the tire gauges. But the media rarely explained the background, even in the simplest terms, which are that McCain lied when he said this was Obama's energy plan. (How could the media explain when its so focused on where every possible vice presidential choice is every minute of the day?)

McCain looked straight in the cameras, and lied to the media and the viewing audience. And no one cares. Why? Because he got shot down and was held as a POW during the Vietnam War. Well, he may have been a POW back then, and that's fine. He should be honored what he went through, back then. But now he's a sophomoric liar... which sounds a lot like the president we currently have.
OMG,
where is the media watch on the outright LIES of mccain??? he just said make no mistake obama will raise taxes on people making 32,000 a year or more. the old man confused his plan with obama's. this was an outright lie, obama says taxes go up for people making 250,000 or more a year. that's just raising the taxable cap on social secutity tax INCOME.

mccain = LIAR

1.1 million from big oil so far john. let's talk about that.

let's talk about how the swnate rebuked you for extremely poor judgement with the KEATING 5 SCANDAL.

THIS TIME COUNTRY BEFORE PARTY.
Mitt for VP...are you stupid..?

Throw the Catholic and Southern vote
under the bus..Hannity like Chuck Norris have the insight of a wet paper bag..
I all for mccain picking mike huckabee I think this would help Obama win.
