McCain vs. Obama: The energy debate

Posted: Tuesday, August 05, 2008 9:17 AM by Mark Murray
Filed Under:

The Washington Post covers Obama’s speech on energy yesterday, in which he called for opening up the nation’s strategic reserves to lower the price of gasoline -- “the second time in less than a week that he has modified a position on energy issues.” More: “The proposal, along with Obama's comments last week that he would consider expanding offshore drilling as part of a comprehensive energy bill, illustrated how both candidates are trying to find quick fixes to $4-a-gallon gas and other rising energy costs. McCain had also opposed additional offshore drilling until reversing his position in June, and he has called for a suspension of the federal gas tax.”

“But their proposals reflect a problem both candidates face: There are few ways to dramatically reduce gas prices, even as voters demand solutions.”

The New York Times: “The proposals Mr. Obama offered Monday represented an effort to return the campaign’s focus to bread-and-butter issues after he found himself repeatedly on the defensive last week against a newly aggressive McCain campaign. ‘We should sell 70 million barrels of oil from our Strategic Petroleum Reserve for less expensive crude, which in the past has lowered gas prices within two weeks,’ Mr. Obama said. ‘Over the next five years, we should also lease more of the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska for oil and gas production, and we should also tap more of our substantial natural gas reserves and work with the Canadian government to finally build the Alaska natural gas pipeline, delivering clean natural gas.’”

Yet: “At the heart of Mr. Obama’s proposals is a focus on fostering alternative energy development by investing $150 billion in emerging technologies and renewable fuels. Seeking to put a million fuel-efficient hybrid plug-in automobiles on the road, he said that he would offer a $7,000 tax credit to buyers, the overall cost of which he did not specify. In addition, Mr. Obama said his goal was to have 10 percent of the country’s energy needs met by renewable resources by the end of his first term, more than double the current figure.”

The Houston Chronicle: “John McCain received prolonged applause from the oil executives who gathered June 17 in Houston to hear the Republican presidential candidate's speech on energy policy. Now it appears that McCain received something else: Lots of campaign contributions.”

“John McCain's contributions from energy industry interests happened to spike right around his Houston speech (and a fundraising tour of Texas). Is it a coincidence, the result of aggressive Texas outreach -- or is it a show of gratitude? Let us know what you think.”

The Wall Street Journal did a whole story on the GOP’s tire gauge gag.

Time fact-checks the tire gauge issue and finds Obama is right. "The RNC is trying to make the tire gauge a symbol of unseriousness, as if only the fatuous believed we could reduce our dependence on foreign oil without doing the bidding of Big Oil. But the tire gauge is really a symbol of a very serious piece of good news: we can use significantly less energy without significantly changing our lifestyle. The energy guru Amory Lovins has shown that investment in "nega-watts" — reduced electricity use through efficiency improvements — is much more cost-effective than investment in new megawatts, and the same is clearly true of nega-barrels. It might not fit the worldviews of right-wingers who deny the existence of global warming and insist that reducing emissions would destroy our economy, or of left-wing Earth-firsters who insist that maintaining our creature comforts would destroy the world, but there's a lot of simple things we can do on the demand side before we start rushing to ratchet up supply."

Obama is the 'If It Feels Good, Do It' candidate. One week he's for something, the next week he's against it. If you don't like his policy stance today, wait a day or two, he'll change. The man is an arrogant light-weight.
Did anyone notice that McCain's web ad on Obama's energy plan is backed by Jackson Browne's Running on Empty? I know Browne is a strong democrat, any way to find out if he approved the use (or maybe his label owns the rights?) I sure hope he didn't and will ask them to remove it!!
obama definitely won the energy debate after that speech.  whats McCain's plan...Gas tax holliday, drilling, not inflating tires...come on.

I think taking money away from profitable companies, and giving it away to people that don't deserve it is a great economic policy. What could go wrong with that?
Obama should produce ads quoting T. Boone Pickens' praise for his energy policies.

McCain, I suppose, will continue to lie about Obama's plan, but what can you do? He's low-road John; former American hero and current negative hack of a lying politician.

I don't know about the rest of you -- but I MUCH PREFER a debate on substantive issues.  Keep the campaign tactics out of the gutter.

Putting a million hybrids on the road is a great idea. Conservatives know though there will need to be a lot more electricity producing power plants to charge all those batteries. Liberals on the other hand think that kind of power comes from a plug on the wall.
McCain and the RNC are morons.  Obama is right and should win in November, despite Bill Clinton's still ongoing negative campaign against him.
Obama did NOT change his position on off-shore drilling. He was against it before, and he is STILL against it now. He simply said that he would consider it as part of a bipartisan proposal if that were the only way to break a stalemate and get something done.

That does NOT mean he is 'endorsing' or 'supporting' it in anyway.
Here's the energy debate in a nutshell yesterday...

Obama - Tells you you need to take responsibility for cutting back on your energy use by keeping your tires properly inflated.  (The Dept of Energy and NASCAR agree that you should do this to increase gas mileage.)

McCain - Attends the bike rally in Sturgis and holds a rally where, instead of applauding, they sit on their motorcycles with engines idling and rev the engines in approval while wasting gasoline.
McCain is running a "limp" campaign. That just provided a visual that NO ONE needs this early in the morning.....OMG!
McCain, Bush, Big Oil...one happy family.

Apparently McCain has never heard of the word "conservation".

If he had his way the country would take at least 10 years to get any benefits from drill, drill, drill, drill, and more drilling, and the construction of nuclear plants.

Conservation can make an impact NOW!!!! We can better insulate our homes, get programmable thermostats, lower thermostats, turn off lights, hybrid cars are happening NOW, we can lower our driving speed, and yes, yes, yes, use those tire gauges to inflate your tires to the proper level.

Conservation is an important step we ALL can do to make a difference rather than allow the oil industry to continue to make record profits.
Gotta love the way the right uses their buzz words (arrogant, presumtive, flip flop, blah blah blah) over and over--maybe so they'll believe it. There is no one more arrogant than those pricks in the oval office and in that secret location, W and Dick!
Be it known by McCain that Obama can't do anything right, so is the reason Johnny boy has lost his marbles...Who in the hell is he to chastise or point the finger at anyone..?

I really admire Obama's ability to analyze and rethink his positions based on the needs of us Americans.

He is so thoughtful and intelligent and sends a powerful message that he and we are in control of where we are going as a nation.

It is good to see that we as individuals can do our part. It makes you feel more empowered and not so helpless as we have felt within the last 8 years.

Having McCain as president will bring that feeling of hopelessness back again. That cannot happen.

OBAMA 08
‘We should sell 70 million barrels of oil from our Strategic Petroleum Reserve for less expensive crude, which in the past has lowered gas prices within two weeks,’ Mr. Obama said.
_________
There are 700 million barrels of oil in the SPR, so this would be 10% reduction.

70 million barrels at $120 a barrel = $8.4 Billion.

$8.4 Billion would be enough to kick start the wind, solar, biomass, and geothermal initiatives and enough to get GM & Ford retooled, rehiring, and moving forward on building new hybrids/electric cars.

Don't forget to wish Obama a belated happy birthday if you didn't yesterday: https://donate.barackobama.com/page/contribute/pf?outreach_page_id=45154
How can anyone expect real leadership out of this?

Those that live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones...
You democrats might as well have voted for Hillary, since Barack has conveniently "adjusted" his positions on issues to match what her positions were.  Good luck with your candidate who has 143 days experience as a Senator before dumping that job to be a candidate.
...get programmable thermostats...
Tom Kaye (Sent Tuesday, August 05, 2008 9:41 AM)

I did that last month, partly cause my old one was too hard to adjust. Wow, what a difference.  My electric use has dropped significantly by having a more accurate thermostat and being able to pre-set the temperature when I'm not home or when I'm sleeping.

It will definately be nice this winter when I can leave the furnance on low during the night and have it kick on 20 mins before I wake up so it's not freezing cold when I take a shower.  No need to run it all night long.
Bill Clinton legacy still lives on in hearts and minds of liars..
A true champion of deceit and bull..
I'm glad the Obama's don't need that rotten apple..
It's too bad Hillary loses by guilt of association..
Hillary should have dumped him years ago..but she loves to suffer...real deep family issues that's not good for the country...
When is Obama going to visit one of the Millions of acres that the oil companies have leases on that does not have them drilling for oil?  This would be a great picture and reminder of the oil companies wanting tax breaks and ability to drill but not wanting to drill as their oil comes easier and cheaper from foreign investments and buying on the market.
If McCain campaign is "limp" maybe he does need viagra.  Now he just needs to find the anser to why he supports medical coverage for that and not birth control pills.

So you're saying the American people don't deserve help paying for gas?  And how exactly do you think Big Oil got those record profits?  They got them from my--and your--pockets.
Obama always get on board on an issue after the train has left the station.  He says and does whatever he thinks will win the election.  $1,000 back from windfall profits of the oil companies.  I don't think so.  I guess Obama's little socialist soul thinks he is a modern day Robin Hood.

Obama is a threat to American and he can peddle his New World Order and Socialism somewhere else.

So, what your saying is that if a company has 'record profits' that their profits should be taxed and given away? That's quite an economic model. You from the former ussr by chance? Or just an Obama supporter?
You guys make some of the least thoughtful arguments I have ever seen on here. Please in the future get your supportive articles from credible sources and don’t talk of the campaigns as if they were two catty high school girls fighting over homecoming queen.  Can you please start to the movement to think for yourself and with some logic about the issues and their best solutions?  This is the race for our next president can we be more serious about this and not about debating like this is a show on E or MTV.

Thanks America
Everything is funny to the GOP/McCain Campaign, have they become the party of jokers? I just heard that the GOP/McCain Campaign were going to give out tire gauges.  They think it is funny!  I want to know were I can get one.  I need a tire gauge.  I want to do everything I can to conservative energy.  If you know where they are giving them out, let me know.  Maybe you need one, too? Does the GOP/McCain Campaign  want to keep us laughing without finding any solutions that work? Are they the class clowns?  When I want political humor, I watch the Daily Show.
