McCain vs. Obama: Going nuclear

Posted: Wednesday, August 06, 2008 9:19 AM by Domenico Montanaro

The Washington Post and Boston Globe chronicle yesterday's back-and-forth over energy and nuclear policy.

USA Today examines both candidates' nuclear plans.

McCain has said Obama has said "no" to nuclear energy. But as the Boston Globe points out, "Obama has described nuclear power as 'not optimal' and labeled himself 'not a nuclear energy proponent.' But he has said he would not rule out more nuclear power 'only so far as it is clean and safe.'"

The Los Angeles Times covers Obama's pushback at the McCain campaign over the tire gauge attack -- and it notes he seemed have some life in pushing back. "Often cool on the stump, Obama struck a combative note when he told the 2,700 people who came to see him here that McCain had unfairly characterized his position. Ridiculing him over tire gauges, Obama said, is shallow campaigning -- on the order of McCain's much-publicized TV ad likening Obama to celebrities Britney Spears and Paris Hilton."

The New York Daily News’ headline: "McCain goes nuclear; Obama boils over." "Obama hit back at John McCain like never before Tuesday, accusing him of shamefully trying to divide America to conquer the election."

NBC’s Andrea Mitchell reports that Obama supporters in 24 states will talk to voters at gas stations this week and distribute copies of Obama’s energy plan. In addition, the Obama campaign announced that it will run this ad on a network of TV screens that are affixed atop gas pumps throughout Florida.

Politico: “The Democratic National Committee on Wednesday is launching an ‘Exxon McCain ’08’ campaign, complete with a gas-pump logo and garish red buttons, bumper stickers and yard signs.”

On McCain's new ad, the AP writes, "McCain's assertion that 'we're worse off than we were four years ago' differs from his answer in January when he was asked during a debate if the country is better off now than it was eight years ago. His response then: 'I think you could argue that Americans overall are better off because we have had a pretty good prosperous time with low unemployment and low inflation. And, a lot of good things have happened, a lot of jobs have been created." He added: "Things are tough right now,' and cited the housing crisis, a weak economy and a volatile stock market. He made a similar comment during a media interview in April."

We need not worry about Obama. He'll get rolled on the nuclear issue, just like he got rolled on the drilling issue, the visiting the troops issue (which, apparently, he forgot to do while he was there - too many cameras I guess). Obama is popular because he's popular, just like Paris and Britney. His positions on what is imporant to the country though are not even close to where the American people are.

It's too bad that McCain doesn't tell voters the truth.

Now let's see if I understand this correctly.

The GOP evidently have taken it upon themselves to define Senator Obama before he defines himself. At least that's what I keep hearing.
What exactly does that mean?
Are we to assume that Senator Obama is unable to do that himself?

According to them, we the people "don't know him" yet. Even with the internets, with the books Senator Obama has written, his ads, his interviews and all the campaigning he does? What is he, an empty suit or something? Is that what the GOP really believes?

hmmmm.

In case the right wingers haven't noticed, Senator Obama did quite well in the primaries and has raised a great deal of money. And unless it's my imagination, and despite what I hear over and over and over, I'm under the impression from what I have seen with my own eyes, that Senator Obama is quite capable to reach out to thousands upon thousands of people where ever he goes. I just don't see where he needs help from the GOP in defining him. People DO seem to know him and because of that, they seem to like him just fine. When we listen to him, we see immediately that hes a very smart man. And we happen to think hes on to something.

I hate to break it to the republican party, but Senator Obama is not the one who needs defining. Actually it's the GOP, who seem to have destroyed everything they have touched along the way, starting with the Nixon years. And since you guys dont seem to want to take the time to define your candidate for the President of the United States, Senator McCain, it is up to us to do it for you. And were not going to stop.

And sorry, but most of us just don't feel the need to depend on Buchanan or McCain or Romney or Limbaugh or Hannity or O'Reilly or Kristol or Krauthammer or Barnes or anyone in the GOP for that matter to educate us. We go elsewhere. That's because we like the truth.

Poor GOP - those guys are still taking their marching orders from President Reagan - don't speak ill of another republican (until the election is over).

Republicans can't govern -
I believe the first time I heard these 3 words it was from John Dean. The same John Dean we have all come to know and respect from watching him on Countdown w/Keith Olbermann. Another American citizen who is making a difference. Who is telling us the truth.
His  book - Broken Government-How Republican Rule Destroyed the Legislative, Executive and Judicial Branches is a must read.

3 months & counting.
So here's Obama playing, or at least trying to play, both sides of the fense again. McCain is for drilling. Okay we Americans get that position. McCain is for nukes. Okay, we as Americans get that position. Obama is against drilling, before he's a little bit for it, then, we'll he's not so sure. Okay we as Americans are really not sure what he's stance is on drilling. Obama is against nukes, then he's a little bit for him, but maybe not. Okay, we as Americans are not sure about his stance on the nukes.

This is why Obama is dropping like a rock in the polls. The American people are starting to see what he stands for, or at best don't know where he stands. This is not a leader. This is not a man that is comfortable with his positions. This is why Barack goes back to the Senate in November.
Another stark contrast between the Obama and McCain campaigns...

In response to the bogus "Paris Hilton For President" ad, both the Obama and McCain campaigns issued press releases.

The Obama Campaign - "Whatever."

The McCain Campaign - "It sounds like Paris Hilton supports John McCain's 'all of the above' approach to America's energy crisis - including both alternatives and drilling.  In reality, Paris Hilton may have a more substantive energy policy than Barack Obama."

Does the McCain campaign not undertand...IT WAS A JOKE!!!
These moments with Barack are just like the ones we had with Kerry in the last election. Kerry was for the war, before he was against it. Barack is against the drilling, before he's for it. Barack is against nuclear plants, until he was for it.

This is exactly why the Democrats don't win the Presidency very often.
McCain doesn't have a clue.  Since January 1, 2008 we have lost 500,000 jobs in this country, plenty of small businesses have closed down because no one is patronizing their business, gas is going through the roof and demand is going down (no one is driving because of the prices) and people are losing their homes.

This geezer is so out of touch it's ridiculous if he thinks that we are "better off now" than we were 8 yrs. ago.  A lot of damage has been done in 8 yrs. and it's high time that we start cleaning up this mess created by his president and their cronies in both the house AND the senate.

People talk about this Congress being a "do nothing congress" or a lame duck.  Well whenever they put something up and it gets vetoed exactly how much work can get done.  The Dems took over in 2006 but they STILL don't have enough votes to override a veto unless they get Republicans to agree with them.  How often did that happen?  They, the Republicans, had to beg Bush to sign the freaking housing bill!  So if I were in congress I would take offense to those that think that they are a do nothing congress because that idiot with the pen in the Oval Office is the reason that they can't do anything.

If McCain gets elected, and let's all get on bended knee and pray that he doesn't, we are going to be in a world of even bigger hurt than we are now.  He is going to continue to dig the rabbit hole that Bush has thrown us into and there would be no end in sight.

Oddly, I watched Paris Hilton's response to McCain's ad and someone made her sound down right smart with her "hybrid of both" and it make sense.  Nuclear is NOT the way to go because most people don't want them in their back yards and exactly where are we going to put the waste from these 45 plants that McCain wants built?  No one seems to be addressing THAT aspect of these 45 nuclear power plants.  We all know that he doesn't, however, want that waste in Arizona.

Please give me a break why don't ya.
Pat - Couldn't agree with you more.
Best line from Obama's push back on McCain campaign re tire pressure "they take pride in being ignorant" -great response done with humor!
I thought Barack Obama was the candidate for a Green America. How can he flip to supporting drilling and nuclear plants if he's the Green candidate? Very disappointing.
I think Obama should ask McCain for a hundred million of those gag tire gauges, so that every voter can have his or her own symbol of McCain ignorance.

I don't know if I've ever seen this level of incompetence from a presidential team. Not only do they lie about their opponent's proposal, but they do it in a way that still makes for a better "plan" than their own.

As we've seen from numerous analyses, properly inflated tires would save us more gasoline than offshore drilling can produce. Is it Obama's "plan?" No. But its still better than what McCain proposes.
Obama still leads McCain in significant polls and leads in the potential electoral college number.

McC's constant complaining and negatives attacks will play out with voters, if they have not already and O's lead has gone back up.

Once the debates start McC will drop like a rock and will once again have to resort to despicable attack ads . . . that's all he's got.
Still wondering...what do you do with nuclear waste?
Nuclear energy bodes well for the Nevada vote..
Waste is still the issue with nuclear and "L.I.F.E. Technologies" may solve this dilemma...
The spent fuel will have to be reused until
life time catalyst measures are doable...
Obama knows this but I'm sure McCain does not have a clue.
[[I think Obama should ask McCain for a hundred million of those gag tire gauges, so that every voter can have his or her own symbol of McCain ignorance. ]]

The problem is that liberals won't know how to use them. They'll end up sticking them up their noses, or other places. The Democrats in Florida will attempt to use them to vote. It would just be a big mess.
Still wondering...what do you do with nuclear waste?
sotiredofignorance

Ask Barack. Now that he supports nuclear power, he should have an answer for you.
I detect a double standard here. Why is there only a link to Obama's ad rather than it being uploaded to the site like McCain's ads?

I gotta give kudos to Obama's volunteers. It's great that they're handing out Obama's energy plan at gas stations; that's a great way to reach people directly and cut through the distraction of the MSM's "analysis" on the issue.
Unfortunately, most Americans (especially political pundits) are dumb when it comes to big and complex issues like energy independence.

While McCain is touting the one of the main stables of his energy policy, nuclear power, he doesn't explain how going more nuclear will help the average American taxpayer.  All the Nuclear power produced is used to generate electricity, which accounts for 20% of America's electricity generation.  Oil accounts for ~2% of the electricity produced.  How does more nuclear power help average Americans paying for high price of gasoline and diesel at the pump?
Bomber in free fall!Bomber thinks that we the people are "better off because we have had good prosperous times"WHAT!I guess when the wife pulls down 500,000 dollars a month every month is a good month for the McBombers. How out of touch can a guy get?The elitist like the McBombers don't have to worry about money like the regular people that work every day and are still struggling. Now the repuks want to mock Obama on the tire gauge,tune-up,things that the regular person can do, to do there part.Part of a plan that we all will have to make a effort. While" Big McCain OIL dosn't want us to save fuel, thats why they ponyed up 1.1 million for the Bomber.I have some other ideas that Obama has not spoke on.Lower the speed limit by five miles an hour across the board,65down to sixty,55 down to 50,not only save gas, but saves lifes.Change furnace filters monthly, drive with the windows up,even with the air on you get better mileage, wax your car so it slips thur the air better, plus your ride will look better. There is alot we can do our selfs.
Typical GOP talking points...

Joe Doors, JPL, Fran C. - Do you fail to grasp how much John McCain himself has altered course since he ran in 2000?

He was against offshore drilling but now he feels he has to be for it.

He was against the Bush tax cuts but now he feels he has to make them permanent.

He was against torture but now he feels waterboarding is okay.

Barack Obama is telling a truth that apparently the GOP doesn't want any part of...we can't just drill our way out of the mess we're in.

Nuclear power?  Everybody wants it but not in their backyard and what happens to the waste?

Obama then tells you you're actually going to have to conserve and what do you do?  You laugh him down.  Are you kidding me?  You're Republicans...I thought you were the party of personal responsibility and not wanting the government to do everything for you!

But, whatever...as I've always said, you're the GOP and you're not ones for letting details stand in the way of anything.
As usual, McBush is lying about Obama's position on Nuclear power.  What I find interesting is that McCain once vowed that nuclear waste would NEVER be stored in Arizona. Maybe it can be stored near one of his other many houses. Or maybe not, because, though senile, McCain still realizes that nuclear power creates toxic waste that will last thousands of years and blight whatever spot it is dumped in. So, John-boy says, lets go nuclear---as long as you don't store that waste in MY backyear(s, given the number of houses Cindy Lou Who lets him live in). So, McCain is willing to ruin SOMEBODY'S back yard for this easy election-year fix...as long as it isn't HIS.
drill drill drill mccain wants to build 45 nuclear plants. sure. go ahead. build them all in serona, arizona!. be my guest! moron!
McCain keeps saying that "Obama is against storage of Nuclear waste"  I am begging the media to please get me an answer and find out just what the hell does that mean?  Does it mean that even though Cheney & Bush promised not to stuff nuclear waste into the mountains they're doing it anyway?  And please ask the "straight talker" what he intends to do with the tons of waste his brand new (the hell with safety regulations) nuclear plants will produce.
John McCain proposes building 45 new nuclear plants? Where?! Some should ask him where he plans on building them, Colorado? New Mexico? Nevada? ARIZONA?!! I will support John McCain, if he guarantees that one nuclear power plant will be in close proximity to D.C.

There is a Mccain video from a press avail from 4-12-08 where Mccain was asked what could done right now to lower energy cost? Mccain response:Turn off your lights 5 minutes earlier and stop driving that exrta block. So much for mocking Obama plan.
McCain sd Obama was Dr. No.  Should change name to Dr. Only If.  drilling:  only if limited   nuclear:  only if safe and clean   coal:  only if carbon capped.  How stupid does he think we are?  Using "only if" means "no". You have to be able to perform the tasks before you can limit them.
"Still wondering...what do you do with nuclear waste? "

What a great question, anybody got an answer? Media? McCain campaign? Joe Scarborough?

P.S. Great post, Pat,Boston,MA!
I have been paying attention to Obama and mccain this whole election and I have never heard Obama say he didn't want nuclear power.  In a debate he said that we would have to consider nuclear power and I remember hillary clinton ridiculing him for it.  so I think this is an irrelevant issue.
