First thoughts: Obama builds map lead

From Chuck Todd, Mark Murray, and Domenico Montanaro
*** Obama builds on map lead: Obama has expanded his lead over McCain in NBC’s latest electoral map. Obama now has 217 electoral votes in his column versus 189 for McCain, building on his 210-189 edge from last month. There are 132 votes in the toss-up category. Here are the changes from last month, all of them moving in Obama’s direction: 1) Iowa moves from toss-up to Lean Obama, continuing this trend of the Illinois senator over-performing in the "region" of Illinois; 2) New Jersey moves from Lean Obama to Likely Obama; and 3) Oregon moves from Lean Obama to Likely Obama. In another year, both of those states would not have moved so early, but it's pretty clear the GOP and McCain will not be seriously contesting either one.

Likely Obama: CA, CT, DE, DC, HI, IL, ME, MD, MA, NJ, NY, OR, RI, VT, WA (190 electoral votes)
Lean Obama: IA, MN, WI (27 votes)
Toss-up: CO, FL, MI, MO, NV, NM, NH, OH, PA, VA (132 votes)
Lean McCain: AK, GA, IN, MT, NC, ND, SD (53 votes)
Likely McCain: AL, AZ, AR, ID, KS, KY, LA, MS, NE, OK, SC, TN, TX, UT, WV, WY (136 votes)

*** Not all toss-ups are equal: If this were October 26 instead of August 6, we probably wouldn’t have this many toss-ups states on our map. Florida, Missouri, and Nevada would move into the Lean McCain column, while Michigan, New Mexico, and Pennsylvania would move into Obama’s. That would give Obama a 260-232 electoral lead over McCain, and it would leave us with four pure toss-ups: Colorado, New Hampshire, Ohio, and Virginia. And under that scenario, McCain would need to win ALL THREE of Colorado, Ohio, and Virginia to win or break a 269-269 tie, which would probably favor Obama.

*** Leaning towers of toss-ups: As for which of the "lean" states could end up in the toss-up category, keep an eye on Wisconsin, Indiana, and North Carolina. The RNC believes all is not lost yet in Wisconsin, and that at some point there will be some snapback and the state will get close again -- possibly after the GOP convention finishes up in neighboring Minnesota. As for the other two, ask yourself this question: If the Dem primary hadn't put Indiana and North Carolina on the map as primary states, would Obama be as competitive? This is a case where the drawn out primary might have helped Obama, even as their campaign still mutters about the lost time. Of the two, GOP strategists we've talked to believe North Carolina will move into the toss-up category before Indiana, but all that could change with a stroke of the VP pen.

*** A big veep day: With 19 days until the Dem convention and 26 days until the GOP one, today is a very big day for veep watchers. Obama stumps with Evan Bayh in Elkhart, IN; Michelle Obama attends a fundraiser with Tim Kaine in Norfolk, VA (after she visits with military families there); Tim Pawlenty already spoke at GOPAC’s State and Local Summit in Arlington, VA and later addresses the National Press Club; and Kathleen Sebelius speaks at an Obama fundraiser in Leelanau County, MI. Whew. With the Obamas just days away from their last vacation before the election, one wonders if the most significant meeting between an Obama and a VP candidate is taking place in Virginia and not Indiana. Just suggestin'… As for Pawlenty, many in McCain Land continue to marvel at how good the Minnesota governor has become as a campaign surrogate. Both Romney and Pawlenty have really shown some campaign chops.

*** What was Bill thinking? While Bayh campaigns with Obama today, we found out yesterday that Hillary Clinton will stump for him in Nevada on Friday and in Florida in two weeks. Of course, this news comes after husband Bill gave Obama a very tepid endorsement on whether the Illinois senator is qualified to be president. “You could argue that no one’s ever ready to be president,” he told ABC. (Somehow, we don’t remember him saying that about his wife during the Democratic primary season.) What was Bill Clinton thinking here? No doubt he’s still bitter about his wife losing the Dem primary battle, but for someone with his political skills, he should have been able to hit a homerun with that question about Obama. As many a Clinton watcher knows, Bill's very aware of the implications of every sentence he utters. He can't use the "I was taken out of context" excuse on this one. A couple of thoughts here: One, Bill’s answer won’t help Hillary if Obama loses and the Clintons make another run at the White House in 2012, because the Clintons have to be seen as being fully aboard the Obama Train. And because of this, look for Hillary to be effusive in her praise of Obama in Nevada -- in fact, she may now feel she has to go over the top. Two, would Bill have said what he said if Hillary was actually being vetted for VP? The idea of Bill campaigning throughout the fall was already seen as something of a potential headache to some in Obama Land, merging the two operations seems to get even more complicated by the hour or by the Bill Clinton soundbite. In fact, can the Obama campaign trust having Bill on the stump for him at all in the fall?

*** Shiny metal object time: With so many problems at home and abroad (the poor economy, high gas prices, war in Iraq, escalating violence in Afghanistan), we’re loathe to spend another day talking about Paris Hilton, but here we go. While her new Web video takes direct shots at McCain and his age, it seems to only help the Arizona senator. Why? Because it keeps the memory of McCain’s initial shot at Obama alive. That's why the McCain campaign seems to be relishing the video release by Hilton more than Team Obama. By the way, speaking of shiny metal objects, it was interesting to see Obama dump the "coolness" or "aloofness' for a day in his pushback on the tire gauge gag. Obviously, the hits have gotten a bit under Obama's skin, but there are probably some Obama supporters who are glad to see he had some fight in him.

*** Downballot round up: It May Be August, but yesterday was a fairly significant day at the polls. In Georgia, the DSCC got the long-shot candidate it wanted in Jim Martin, who beat Vernon Jones in yesterday’s Senate run-off for the right to face Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R)… In Missouri, Rep. Kenny Hulshof (R) beat Sarah Steelman in the GOP gubernatorial primary, and he will battle Jay Nixon (D) in the fall. This might be the single most competitive GOV race in the country and the fact that it's taking place in a key toss-up state only adds to its importance… And in Michigan, Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick (D) -- whose son Kwame Kilpatrick has been plagued by scandal -- narrowly won her primary.

*** On the trail: McCain begins his day in Huntington, WV (where he stops by football practice at Marshall University) and later tours a company in Jackson, OH and hits a fundraiser in Dublin, OH. Obama holds a morning town hall in Elkhart, IN before departing for Minneapolis.

Countdown to Dem convention: 19 days
Countdown to GOP convention: 26 days
Countdown to Election Day 2008: 90 days
Countdown to Inauguration Day 2009: 167 days

What?  No discussion of the Paris Hilton retaliation ad?  I'm shocked!

http://thepajamapundit.com/
Try to spin that, Joe S. Though I don't watch his show anymore and from the comments on this blog about how talks trash about Obama, I still can't stand the man. This is why they kicked his a$$ out of politics. hahahaha @ JOE!
A slightly devil's advocate position for Evan Bayh as Veep (since he's not so popular in the blogosphere).  Check it out:

Maybe John "who wants to see my wife naked?" McCain should consider Paris or Britney as a running mate?

The Hiltons were big contributors of McCain's, and I hear Britney is a registered Republican.

Either might do better than Cindy McCain, should the candidate of ignorance want to also offer the running mate up for topless contests.
Best line of the campaign thus far:

"It's like these guys take pride in being ignorant."
The case is easily made that Bush and his administrative and legislative cronies intended to deceive the American public into believing Iraq had weapons of mass destruction to accommodate his criminal invasion of Iraq is easily made. When the highly professional UN weapons inspectors began to reveal that Iraq had no such WMD, the Bush reaction was to rush the invasion so that the weapons inspectors would not have time to complete their work and confirm what Bush already had ample reason to believe.
Iraq will remain an albatross for both Bush and McCain.
McCain is no maverick but symbol of Washington corruption.

Now this may go against my grain; but I found the Paris Hilton bit very funny.  I don't see how it helps him since she calls him wrinkled and old.

Happy to see our Jay Nixon got over 85% of the Dem primary vote and it is really exciting to be in a state that matters, for a change.  My husband and I were both excited that our state might actually be Blue!  It would be so awesome to live in a blue state for a change!  Yippee!
Donna, you were missed over the past couple of days, glad to see you got a post in.  We need your input!

Ira and Mark - where are you guys?
McCain is done. There's really nothing he can do to beat Obama.
It's really sad when a GOP candidate has to offer his wife to a girly contest to get votes from a bunch of hedonists...
that'll get those swing Hillary voters...
Paul, I agree with you and managed to get a post in yesterday on it.  My all time favorite line.  And so True!
FR: "While her new Web video takes direct shots at McCain and his age, it seems to only help the Arizona senator. Why? Because it keeps the memory of McCain’s initial shot at Obama alive."

You're putting way too much thought into this. McCain is just happy he's getting attention from a young blonde.

I'm sure McCain is among all those who love to watch O'Reilly - not for the intelligent conversation but rather for the continual looping of young blonde videos, broken up only by the occassional brunette - like Janet Jackson's boob shot at the Super Bowl.
How the hell is PA a "toss up" state??? Obama has been ahead by between 7-12 points there for months.
"Michelle Obama attends a fundraiser with Tim Kaine in Norfolk, VA (after she visits with military families there) "

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
It is sad that that small parenthetical statement sent a shiver down my spine. So many bad memories of the McCain/Bush tag team on Senator Obama about the military hospital visit in Germany.

That entire incident has to go down as one of the more shameful campaign moments in American history. And yet, the media let it fester for days before even bothering to mention that it wasn't true.

I have come to expect so little of the media and politicians, but I must say, even cynical me was SHOCKED by the cold and calculted nature of this attack.

It didn't make me mad so much as sad - for America and for the soldiers.

We all deserve so much better.
Considering that Obama is so vague about his ideas and he continues to flip flop with almost passionate glee, one has to wonder why John McCain is not Obama's mophead.  BHO is just another tax and spend liberal and if he does get elected president and starts to do things he said he would not do, one would have to laugh at his supporters and tell them "It's all your fault".

And paul Miller,Maybe John McCain does stretch the truth a mite, but he is a more capable president then BHO will ever be.  I don't need my taxes going up anymore then they are now, so I'll vote for McCain, thank you very much.
Come on first read, I don't see anything wrong with what Bill said, he also stated that "Obama would win".  Bill was obviously stating that he was not ready either do to all the pressures and problems one encounters with becomeing POTUS.

Here you go again! Stop causing trouble Mark, Todd and Dominico.
Excellent breakdown on the electoral map. What to watch and when to watch it. Great stuff.
Does anyone REALLY think that Bill didn't know what he was saying when he made his comments to ABC?

You can call Bill a lot of things - however, dumb is not one of them.  He knows exactly what he is saying.  Which is why he should stop talking.

OK - Hill didn't make it through the Primary, but this whole 2012 strategy is a longshot at best.  Yeah, let's throw the country down the toliet so we can try to regain power in the next election.

Brilliant - NOT
Bitter Candidates only make bitter Americans! In my computer class, a student made a remark that his "white" grandmother wanted him to registar to vote , so he could make sure bitter McCain gets in office, because she does not want to see a Black man run america!  This old mentality will only ensure that racism stays alive!
I thought the Paris Hilton ad was funny.  It is a real stretch to say it helped McCain.

I wonder when the media is going to go after McCain for the vulgar comment about his wife in SD?  When will you stop tiptoeing around McCain's sexism?

There is no excuse for what he said.

As for Scarborough?  Never watch him.
So the race comes down to OH, PA and FL. What a surprise.

18K is not a "middle class" donation!

But I will pass along another 2K to Obama before this is all over!!
Everyone knows Obama extended his lead except " Cotton Top " McCain. A big veep-day isn't going to help Cotton Top or any of Bill Clinton's inclined angles or fused polls.
Of course big donors (also known as lobbyists) support Barack Obama. What'd you think, all the aging hippies sending in their penny bottles we're making that big of cash splash? BHO is bought and paid for many times over by big corporations, big oil, and big environment. He'd be like a puppet on a string in the oval office.
Best line of the campaign thus far:

"It's like these guys take pride in being ignorant."

Paul Miller, Woodbridge, VA

So who's ignorant on the oil drilling and nuclear issue?
The paris hilton video is hilarious...if mccain thinks he will win any serious votes doing video combat with paris hilton he is going to get creamed this fall
Actually, it may not be a bad thing for Obama that Bill Clinton continues to reveal himself as such a crybaby---in the same way that Jesse 'Old Politics' Jackson's under the breath complaints helped.  Basically, it reassures us that Obama is his own man; in fact, I think that's the thing about him which is most attractive as a candidate and American leader---a guy who has, at once, 'made it' with the help of many, many others (and acknowledges it), yet is beholden to no one.  Let's get him put to work in a very hard job.
First read is so biased it's appalling!!
There is just NO way that the Paris Hilton ad helps McCain. Regular people put the credible media voices who have slammed McCain, John McCain's Mother, Paris' Mother and his friends who have shaken tehir head with disbelief at his silly tactics in these ads with Paris' clear disdain of REALLY old, white hair, shriveled up McCain asking "Is he ready to lead?"

First read is just another spinmeister machine.
Shame on you!! Good thing that you can't spin the electoral votes math or you would spin that to.
Change your name to First spin....not first read.
Obama is going to pull away in the gallup poll and other polls and then someone will make the case that we should only be looking at likely voters.
Jokers!!!
My I propose my alternative opinion on the Paris effect. I've noticed that the purple/light blue states continue to trend towards Obama. Maybe that is the effect of McCain eroding his reputation with the center-left independants and Reagan Democrats. Every time McCain pulls stunts his own message gets drowned out by Obama's response and it gives the impression he isn't being serious about his campaign. I was concerned about national polling..but if the states continue to trend to Obama..my thinking is the national polling will follow.
Chuck Todd:  It appears that you want the MSNBC viewer to believe the election is closer than it really is. Let's begin with with PA.  PA Obama leads 49-42, up by seven.  That is beyond the error of measurement and has had Obama leading in PA for months. Now MI.  Obama leads 46-42 granted closer but beyond error of measurement and steady for months.
National has Obama up by 6 and Gallup has Obama up by 4.  Abramowitz takes the Gallup daily tracking poll since June 5th, creates a ten day average and has Obama up by 3-4 points. The daily variance is "statistical noise".

Real Clear Politics has Obama with 322 and McCain with 216, Electoral Vote has Obama up with 316 and McCain with 209, Pollser has Obama up with 284 to McCains 147.  As of 8/5/08 Zogby has Obama with 273 with McCain 146 (too close to call 119)

So why would you keep Mi and Pa in the undecided column? If you put Mi and Pa in the Obama column, you could still change it of the polling numbers change. I do not want to believe it is to create a false sense of closeness when Obama is steadly pulling ahead.  What is nice about this election is that the more informed voters can seek out many of the sources you use and come to a different and (perhaps more accurate) conclusion.
I'm glad to see that Obama's strategy of expanding the electoral map is working. It's nice to read some good news about his campaign given the MSM's love affair with old man McCain.

Bill Clinton's comments actually point to one of the reasons Obama may not put Hillary on the ticket--sometimes the things he says are not helpful. I wonder how Hillary really feels about her husband, knowing that his "tepid" remarks about Obama mean she'll have to be more "effusive" in her campaigning? Talk about an albatross around her neck.
It's a sad day for democrats when President Clinton can't swallow his pride and do what's right for the party and the country.
I disagree with your Paris assessment. Yes, it keeps the original McCain ad in the news but in a bad way. This is no longer about Obama/Paris; It's now McCain/Paris. McCain has tied himself more to Paris Hilton than Obama. He is supposed to be the grown-up in this campaign and now he looks undignified, unstatesman-like and ridiculous. And besides, it's never good to be called that "old wrinkly, white-haired guy" or compared to the Crypt Keeper.
Can John McCain explain the maxed out contributions he is getting from unregistered voters and people with very little interest in politics?

http://strategy08.wordpress.com/2008/08/06/mccain-bundler-raises-questionable-contributions-from-mechanic-unregistered-voters/
Gregory Peek, Birmingham, Alabama (Sent Wednesday, August 06, 2008 9:32 AM)

Gregory it goes so deep that they past down their talking points for this war amongst the conservative churchs as well. I still remember that sunday that I got up and walked out of my church for the day when my pastor was reading an Email talking about those Iraqi devils and that Bush was a man of god lead to blah blah blah and that those tree huggers wont like what we are doing. You lmow the typical repuke spewl. They planned this thing so well and used test runs on the conservative churchs with email like that one. I stood up and said that day to a group of angry church goers that we are being fed a lie and that no WMD's would be found. Gee I guess just may be I could see through the BS and was not blinded by rage. The crooks took advantage of Americas pain . Damn this adminstration to hell for that and their little Old buddy because he sold his soul to the Devil and you see it coming out as he tries to win at all cost .
Given McCain's occasional epileptic fits (e.g. Sturgis) and his Senior Moments (Sunni/Shiite and many others) and his horrendous campaign staff, I'm guess Obama will win. 'Nuff said.
As for Paris's ad, it was unexpectedly smart and funny.  I think the beginning, comparing McOld to famous "ancient of days" characters in pop culture with the pronouncement (true) that McCain is the oldest man to run for President, plus her referring to him as "the wrinkled old guy with the white hair" was not much in McCain's favor.  It scared me that her suggestion of an energy policy made more sense than EITHER of the candidates. Paris Hilton, political strategist...who woulda thunk it?
Nobody should be surprise about Obama's lead. He needs to WIN for the sake of AMERICA AND THE WORLD AT LARGE. Look there are serious problems in America and to think that McCain with all these years couldn't come up any VISION for america is extremely sad. Here is a guy whose achievement in life is been POW. Now, just pause a little and ask yourself why is he attacking OBAMA personally INSTEAD of telling the American people what he will do. Americans are too smart to be deceive again just like 2000 and 2004 elections. It will not happen again for the third term. This is not about man's color. Let see how civilised Americans are, will they choose more of the same or will they choose change not base on a man's skill color but ideals. I am white American and will tell you this, I will choose change even with risk which means OBAMA will get my VOTE.
I think Obama's actually at his best when he's on the attack. It's so unexpected, but it's great when he calls McCain out on his tripe. I agree the "It's like these guys take pride in being ignorant." has been the line of the campaign so far. THAT should a headline.

I also think his town hall speech July 31 in Cedar Rapids, IA was a great response to the Paris Hilton/Britney Spears ad. I am disappointed, however, that Brokaw chose to play the race card as his response on MTP this week instead of his real response. I really miss Russert.
Chuck,
Why is it that Joe can run loops everyday of Barak bowling but no mention of McCain disrespecting his wife? That's downright discrimination towards Obama. He has to run the "highest road" and McCain can run "any old road" and they both can be running for president.
I can't believe that any married man that respects his wife and mother of his children would "offer her up" to a "skeezer" beauty contest.
It's official...it's now "Morning Vomit".
talk about mccain bein out of it--he stammers to a group of bikers in sturgis first about gas prices then about bringing congress back. here is a group of folks who spend more for their bikes than a lot of cars, think nothing of spending 10k in chrome and accessories and another 10 k in paint jobs and ride machines that get milage figures high enough to make hybrid owners cry and could care less about congress on vacation. if the recess is all the democrate's fault where are the rest of the republicans who have split from washington. mccain should join the handful who stayed in washington for like them he is in the dark
You guys are incredible. Read this sentence from your column:

*** Shiny metal object time: With so many problems at home and abroad (the poor economy, high gas prices, war in Iraq, escalating violence in Afghanistan), we’re loathe to spend another day talking about Paris Hilton, but here we go.

So, these problems didn't exist when McCain launched this ad, which was followed by the Traditional Media talking about it non-stop? Really?! How was the ad worthy of attention then but not worthy of attention now?

The only thing that changed is that Hilton's devastating response points out how old McCain in. So the grand old man of politics has found himself in a debate with a real celebrity, and now you guys don't want to talk about it because we have so many problems.

This is why people hate journalists. You are bending over backwards to prop up McCain. But don't worry, your time is ending. The video has over 600,000 views. If you had any sense you'd have a link to it on this page so you could drive page views and revenue.
Actually, I think it will be fair to put Paris Hilton up against John McCain on a weekly basis. They can be debating who has the most fortune, wears the most expensive shoes, has featured in the most movies, etc.

Meanshile Barack Obama can continue to talk about issues that matter to us.
Nothing about Paris after NBC ran with McCains ad for 3 straight nights?!

You rather mention Carly Fiorino who has 0% chance of being VP, (especially after recent polling shows women would take it as pandering).

Strange choices dudes.
Best line of the campaign thus far:

"It's like these guys take pride in being ignorant."

==========

The best line will be when Obama calls McCain, and through his sobs says he concedes.
Your "opinions" are way off base:

"it was interesting to see Obama dump the "coolness" or "aloofness' for a day" Obama was very "cool" yesterday! I was there in Berea and he was having FUN. He looked way cool to me! I especially liked his comment:  "It's like these guys take pride in being ignorant." He hit the nail on the head!

"While her new Web video takes direct shots at McCain and his age, it seems to only help the Arizona senator." This is TOTALLY ridiculous. It really puts McCain down and puts him in his place for making such an idiotic ad. In his speeches, Obama reminds people of the ad by saying how McCain would rather make immature ads than deal with the real issues. It reminds people that McCain will go to ANY lengths to win. (lying, misleading, etc.)

I find it hard to beleive that you would put Wisconsin in the toss-up column.  As a "cheesehead" who lives in a very republican part of the state I can tell you that McCain stands about as much of a chance of winning here as Ted Thompson (Packer GM) has of winning "Man of the Year" in the state after what he pulled on Brett Favre.
Obama asks Americans to properly inflate their tires to help save gas. Simple, to the point, easy to understand, something all who own vehicles can do, an immediate savings. And he gets mocked for it by McCain. An Obama Presidency will be one where the administration does what it can to serve the interests of its people. But it will also be an administration that will ask the American people for help where they can take steps to benefit the good of all. Some call Obama an elitist yet he appears humble enough to me to understand that he (as President) will need the help of the American people to make inroads into some of the issues facing us today. He is not JFK, but he certainly has the same vision and understanding of what it takes to move a country forward - A caring administration that leads and a nation of people who asks what they can do for their country.
If those yet undecided about a candidate will consider the small things Obama has spoken about and that he has exhibited and not just the major policy issues they would know we need him as our next President. Not because he is perfect or that he will not make some errors along the way. They all do. They are all human. But because of the fact that he asks people to inflate their tires, he asks a heckler to lead a crowd in the pledge of allegiance, he responds to the race card issue by seeking greater understanding between the races, he supports the death penalty if someone harms one of our kids, he softens his personal position on issues when he sees it is a direction the American people want to go, he tells Pakistan we will come and get Bin Laden if they do not because Bin Laden is responsible for 911, he states violence in Baghdad has decreased because of the surge yet still is bothered by the initial invasion because of the loss of thousands of American lives, he stands firm on the opponent’s summer gas tax proposal because he knows it will not benefit Americans as being promised, he does want all American to have health care, he does support a woman's right to chose, he opposes torture, he handles hecklers with calm and respect, he exhibits deep love for his wife and children (they are at his side, not walking behind him), etc. etc.
The fact is that Obama has his flaws as we all do. But Obama has shown and does show his human side and that there is a sensitivity and empathy for people lying within his soul. People share reasons they do not like or prefer Obama and if based on a disagreement with Obama's policy proposals that is fine. But one cannot accept those who argue he has no proposals or the he is elitist or a celebrity. Those are surface reasons and held by those it is best to hold one’s breadth arguing with.  What this country needs is someone as Obama who is made up of those things mentioned in this post. I’m sure McCain is a fairly decent man but we have had enough rigidity and a view of the world that is constantly suspicious and on-guard to last us a life time. Let’s put Obama in office. Let him grow and le the American people grow with him. There will be a special bond that develops between the American people and Obama, even with those who may not yet want to throw him their full support. They won’t be disappointed in what lies underneath that politician’s exterior.
I know the "tire flap" is getting old by now, but you all do realize properly inflated tirres lead to fewer blow-outs, leading to greater safety on our highways, right?  And, tires wear longer when properly inflated.  Does the manufacture of new tires use oil?  Why, yes, it does.
Wonder how many posters will make fun of those two
points today while pridefully showing their ignorance?

Speaking of energy issues- suppose we DO start drilling today.  Let's say we get a million barrels a day.  This would cause speculator-related activity to immediately bring prices down, right?  Oh, but wait- wouldn't OPEC just cut production in an equal ammount to keep the world market supply right where they like it?  Just a thought.  HOpe it doesn't sound too ignorant on my part.
