First thoughts: Obama builds map lead

*** Obama builds on map lead: Obama has expanded his lead over McCain in NBC’s latest electoral map. Obama now has 217 electoral votes in his column versus 189 for McCain, building on his 210-189 edge from last month. There are 132 votes in the toss-up category. Here are the changes from last month, all of them moving in Obama’s direction: 1) Iowa moves from toss-up to Lean Obama, continuing this trend of the Illinois senator over-performing in the "region" of Illinois; 2) New Jersey moves from Lean Obama to Likely Obama; and 3) Oregon moves from Lean Obama to Likely Obama. In another year, both of those states would not have moved so early, but it's pretty clear the GOP and McCain will not be seriously contesting either one.

Likely Obama: CA, CT, DE, DC, HI, IL, ME, MD, MA, NJ, NY, OR, RI, VT, WA (190 electoral votes)
Lean Obama: IA, MN, WI (27 votes)
Toss-up: CO, FL, MI, MO, NV, NM, NH, OH, PA, VA (132 votes)
Lean McCain: AK, GA, IN, MT, NC, ND, SD (53 votes)
Likely McCain: AL, AZ, AR, ID, KS, KY, LA, MS, NE, OK, SC, TN, TX, UT, WV, WY (136 votes)

*** Not all toss-ups are equal: If this were October 26 instead of August 6, we probably wouldn’t have this many toss-ups states on our map. Florida, Missouri, and Nevada would move into the Lean McCain column, while Michigan, New Mexico, and Pennsylvania would move into Obama’s. That would give Obama a 260-232 electoral lead over McCain, and it would leave us with four pure toss-ups: Colorado, New Hampshire, Ohio, and Virginia. And under that scenario, McCain would need to win ALL THREE of Colorado, Ohio, and Virginia to win or break a 269-269 tie, which would probably favor Obama.

*** Leaning towers of toss-ups: As for which of the "lean" states could end up in the toss-up category, keep an eye on Wisconsin, Indiana, and North Carolina. The RNC believes all is not lost yet in Wisconsin, and that at some point there will be some snapback and the state will get close again -- possibly after the GOP convention finishes up in neighboring Minnesota. As for the other two, ask yourself this question: If the Dem primary hadn't put Indiana and North Carolina on the map as primary states, would Obama be as competitive? This is a case where the drawn out primary might have helped Obama, even as their campaign still mutters about the lost time. Of the two, GOP strategists we've talked to believe North Carolina will move into the toss-up category before Indiana, but all that could change with a stroke of the VP pen.

*** A big veep day: With 19 days until the Dem convention and 26 days until the GOP one, today is a very big day for veep watchers. Obama stumps with Evan Bayh in Elkhart, IN; Michelle Obama attends a fundraiser with Tim Kaine in Norfolk, VA (after she visits with military families there); Tim Pawlenty already spoke at GOPAC’s State and Local Summit in Arlington, VA and later addresses the National Press Club; and Kathleen Sebelius speaks at an Obama fundraiser in Leelanau County, MI. Whew. With the Obamas just days away from their last vacation before the election, one wonders if the most significant meeting between an Obama and a VP candidate is taking place in Virginia and not Indiana. Just suggestin'… As for Pawlenty, many in McCain Land continue to marvel at how good the Minnesota governor has become as a campaign surrogate. Both Romney and Pawlenty have really shown some campaign chops.

*** What was Bill thinking? While Bayh campaigns with Obama today, we found out yesterday that Hillary Clinton will stump for him in Nevada on Friday and in Florida in two weeks. Of course, this news comes after husband Bill gave Obama a very tepid endorsement on whether the Illinois senator is qualified to be president. “You could argue that no one’s ever ready to be president,” he told ABC. (Somehow, we don’t remember him saying that about his wife during the Democratic primary season.) What was Bill Clinton thinking here? No doubt he’s still bitter about his wife losing the Dem primary battle, but for someone with his political skills, he should have been able to hit a homerun with that question about Obama. As many a Clinton watcher knows, Bill's very aware of the implications of every sentence he utters. He can't use the "I was taken out of context" excuse on this one. A couple of thoughts here: One, Bill’s answer won’t help Hillary if Obama loses and the Clintons make another run at the White House in 2012, because the Clintons have to be seen as being fully aboard the Obama Train. And because of this, look for Hillary to be effusive in her praise of Obama in Nevada -- in fact, she may now feel she has to go over the top. Two, would Bill have said what he said if Hillary was actually being vetted for VP? The idea of Bill campaigning throughout the fall was already seen as something of a potential headache to some in Obama Land, merging the two operations seems to get even more complicated by the hour or by the Bill Clinton soundbite. In fact, can the Obama campaign trust having Bill on the stump for him at all in the fall?

*** Shiny metal object time: With so many problems at home and abroad (the poor economy, high gas prices, war in Iraq, escalating violence in Afghanistan), we’re loathe to spend another day talking about Paris Hilton, but here we go. While her new Web video takes direct shots at McCain and his age, it seems to only help the Arizona senator. Why? Because it keeps the memory of McCain’s initial shot at Obama alive. That's why the McCain campaign seems to be relishing the video release by Hilton more than Team Obama. By the way, speaking of shiny metal objects, it was interesting to see Obama dump the "coolness" or "aloofness' for a day in his pushback on the tire gauge gag. Obviously, the hits have gotten a bit under Obama's skin, but there are probably some Obama supporters who are glad to see he had some fight in him.

*** Downballot round up: It May Be August, but yesterday was a fairly significant day at the polls. In Georgia, the DSCC got the long-shot candidate it wanted in Jim Martin, who beat Vernon Jones in yesterday’s Senate run-off for the right to face Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R)… In Missouri, Rep. Kenny Hulshof (R) beat Sarah Steelman in the GOP gubernatorial primary, and he will battle Jay Nixon (D) in the fall. This might be the single most competitive GOV race in the country and the fact that it's taking place in a key toss-up state only adds to its importance… And in Michigan, Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick (D) -- whose son Kwame Kilpatrick has been plagued by scandal -- narrowly won her primary.

*** On the trail: McCain begins his day in Huntington, WV (where he stops by football practice at Marshall University) and later tours a company in Jackson, OH and hits a fundraiser in Dublin, OH. Obama holds a morning town hall in Elkhart, IN before departing for Minneapolis.

In the warped mind of the hardened Washington political reporter, every turn of events, no matter how bad, is in fact good for John "the Maverick" McCain.

John McCain down in the polls?
-The media says "Why isn't Obama up by more?"

John McCain releases an ad filled with lies?
-The media says "But the production value was excellent, and if we keep playing it, many people will never figure out it's not true".

John McCain stumbles his way through a grocery store in a suit?
- The media says "He is connecting with the average
"working class" (white) voter."

John McCain surrounds himself with lobbyists and smear dealing political hacks?
-The media says "Poor John McCain. He wants to run a clean campaign, but the people he hired who work for him won't let him."

John McCain says he can balance the budget in is first term with more tax cuts and unending war?
-The media says "Barack Obama might not be able to pay for his plans either. So there."

I could go on and on. EVERYTHING is good for John McCain, because the media said so.

So pathetic, it's funny! :)

Wow, I love how the Paris ad which makes McCain look like a moron, is somehow helpful...TO MCCAIN!

You guys are seriously in the running for biggest collection of self-congratulatory stooges in the history of western civilization.  The ad makes McCain look like a complete child for dragging Paris Hilton into a presidential election, and you geniuses think that's good for him.

The state of "journalism" in this country is an abomination.
I used to be a big Bill Clinton fan/defender/apologist, not anymore...these days, its like the guy has lost it completely!  Hillary is full strong campaigning for Obama; her endorsement was nothing short of 100%, knowing it is more important to do so for party unity, and for the sake of country, or else, we end up with 4 years of McInsane.  I suspect that given this total disconnect between Hillary's actions [actively campaigning on her own for Obama] vs. Bill's current statements, these two really don't see or talk to each other much if at all these days!

Hillary, dump the bum already!

And as for you Bill, you need to get yourself to a doctor...I think you're having an arterial flow problem to the head Bernice!
Seeing the Obama response to the McCain camp about the pressure gauge reminds me of what I noticed during the primaries; Obama is like Roger Federer on the Tennis court - turns defense into devastating instant offense. It's a work of art!

The McCain camp must have not been taking notes at the time. I can't wait for the debates!
McCain's verabge..
I'm not showing you my VP until you show me yours..

He's nasty..offering his wife to a bunch of wide eyed bikers...Did he get a contact high while at Sturgis?
I disagree...the Paris video hurts McCain, as it plays the age/generational card (and then some), which only highlights the huge age/generation gap between him and Obama.  While Obama would have not played this card directly, the contrast drawn in the video could not have been made clearer to the average voter.

So, the age cat is out of the bag in a big way now, and McCain won't be able to put it back in.
thank God Obama is leading inthe electoral votes;  winning the popular vote just does't do it,  we you have dishonst repub friends or relatives like `Bush' in High Electoral States like Florida.  Al Gore won the popular vote, but crimminal goings on in Florida put the `Bush' in the White House.  I've always said anything in the white house is better than another repub.
As for Bill, his comments show he still wants something form Obama that he hasn't been promised yet.
Finally it starts, True LEADERSHIP will be restored in the white house in no time
Obama and Democrats need to get as down and dirty as the Gop because that's how they win. Obviously, they can not brag about the sorry state of affairs for the last 8 years. It's simple lump McCain with Bush and dust off the old (no pun intended) he was against off shore drilling and tax cuts when he was a so called maverick and now he's just a panderer. Say anything to get elected and keep your base happy as it also applies to Obama-Run to the center.
Yes, Paul in Woodbridge, Va.  Sen Obama is correct, they are ignorant.

He is too much of a gentleman to add, bigoted liars and racist too.     They are all that,  but most of all they are hypocrites.
McCain is owned by Paris Hilton of all people and it is a plus for McCain?? That's just about the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Apparently McCain can do no wrong...offer his wife up in a "beauty contest" in Sturgis...say Nuclear Power is safe at the site of a partial meltdown...mock Obama for making a valid point about tire pressure then say that the point is valid. Ridiculous
John McCain has an excellent chance of winning and, I am not surprised the poll is starting to show McCain ahead.  Many of the Hillary Clinton supporters do not like Barack Obama and they are voting against Obama by voting for John McCain.  There are too many inconsistencies in Obama's biography, his background in Chicago politics, and the church he attended 20 years along with some of the people he associated with that do not set well with many Americans (democrats and republicans). Obama has a record of voting present much of the time which shows he didn't do a good job as a senator, so why elect him to a higher office?

I think the Middle East and European tour may have hurt Obama more than it helped him.  It proved again how much Obama advertises himself and how the American media follows him around trying to shove him down the throats of American voters. It all looked so staged and phony.  It was obvious Obama loved making a grand attention-getting speech to a huge crowd in Germany, but on "Meet the Press" he said he thinks there have been enough debates.  Obama doesn't want to debate John McCain or answer impromptu questions.  This might show how inexperienced he really is.  Obama would much rather perform to a huge crowd and give a prepared speech using a teleprompter so he can be a "rock star".  I think Obama is "The Great Pretender" and I will definitely vote against Obama even though I am a life-long democrat.
We don't want a woman picked by Obama for VP! We want Hillary!!
But I will pass along another 2K to Obama before this is all over!!

GA GUY (Sent Wednesday, August 06, 2008 9:43 AM)

Thanks GAY GUY. Much appreciated.
In response to Yve's mention that the Hilton ad doesn't help McCain.

While I sometimes share your frustration with First Read, it really is the best of the major networks. The point is that the Hilton ad does three things that helps McCain:

1. Continues the Obama as a celebrity comparison.
2. Puts Paris, whom, let's face it, 90% of middle America can't stand against John McCain, which automatically makes him look like the 'good guy'.
3. She puts up an energy plan eerily similar to what Obama has proposed, giving McCain ammo.

Honestly, I wish Paris would just go away, especially given the media's odd fascination with her and the exposure this retarded spot is getting. It certainly does not help Obama.
Knowing that Barack has had the MSM guessing for the Entire election cycle to date,it's possible that one of them may possibly have the VP pick correct. Then again, because some of the MSM wait on the news to come to them instead of vice-versa, it's also possible, the MSM is'nt even in the parking lot, much less the ballpark.

A Landslide is in the making folk's. Poll after poll has Barack leading nationally anywhere between 2-7%.The electoral map is a Reminder to all about the Democrat's 50 state strategy from 2006. Look's like Howard Dean is gonna have the last laugh.

Some Top Democrat's wondered a few month's ago if Barack could throw a Punch? My guess is that has been answered with the "Ignorant" line, along with a few other lines that fly over the Carrot Top Republican's head's.The debates will show the Wisdom, Judgement, & wit among other thing's, that have given us the reason to support Barack from the Get-Go.

John Mccain can't remember his position's on an Hourly basis(maybe even less than that)& it will show tremendously thru the debates.By then, the Undecided's will see Mccain offer's Nada to everyday American's & is only there, because "he was a POW".

Let the Games begin!!

Delusional Thinking By Common Sense American's Is Over!!
McSame and his Karl Rove hack men are running a campaign of dishonesty, hate and racism...Do they really think we Americans are stupid?

First the McBush campaign ridiculed Sen. Obama for saying that Americans should learn other languages…then, they ridicule Sen. Obama for asking Americans to help conserve energy by keeping their tires properly inflated…YES the Republican Party and McSly are truly ignorant!

My daughters speak 3 languages; I speak two and understand 3.  We’re an average American white family and we feel privileged to have the ability to speak to Germans, Norwegians and Frenchmen in their own language.  We also know that keeping our tires properly inflated and out cars properly serviced saves us about 3% at the pump.

Hello America, Sen. Obama’s energy plan will not only create new jobs that can’t be outsourced, it will make America energy independent, and it will help the American family cope with high energy prices now…drilling isn’t the answer.

Do your homework America, read each candidates profile, listen to the news, get involved and I know you’ll find that McDeceit isn’t the right person for the most important job in America.  McBush will give us 4 more years of the same, and America simply cannot afford that!

Obama 08-12

I think what Paul Miller said sums up the whole difference between Dems and the GOP.  Republicans have Hiltons and Britney in their camp.  I mean, if GW Bush wasn't enough to display the lack of intelligence in the GOP, that info right there just sinks the ship.
I'm voting for Obama.  You can too.
It isn't about race.  I'm a White Male.  I really like his message.  I also think we need a change.
I don't think Obama is running to be the first Black President of the United States.  I think he is honestly running to be our leader.  A leader!!! Something we haven't had in a long time.
