Republican mocks 'Beijing George'

From NBC's Mike Viqueira
The following was written by a Republican leader in the U.S. House after it was announced that President Bush, the leader of his party, would not be calling Congress back into session to deal with energy policy.

As chairman of the policy committee, Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI) is the No. 5-ranking Republican in the House. In unfavorably comparing George Bush to Harry Truman, here is, in part, what he wrote in a memo to fellow Republicans (bold added):

"Today, in his final term, the wildly unpopular President George W. Bush boarded Air Force One bound for the Beijing Olympics and a meeting with his chum Hu Jintao, the dapper ruler of a nuclear armed, communist dictatorship. Yet before jetting off, the President's spokesman Tony Fratto bid "Beijing George's" best wishes to the Democrats' "Drill Nothing" 110th Congress: 'We don't have plans to call Congress into session -- it won't make a difference if Democratic leaders are unwilling to bring up a bill for an up-down vote.'"

He also writes, "[P]erhaps our Compassionate Conservative-in-Chief will bring our absent Democrat Congress some "Made in (communist) China" souvenir
t-shirts: 'Bush went to Beijing and all I got was this lousy five week, paid vacation.'"

McCotters full note is here:

Bush Throws Them under the Bone-Dry Bus on Way to Beijing Games

Facing momentous domestic problems and mounting disapproval ratings, two modern Presidents have differently dealt with "Do Nothing" Congresses.

Facing an "impossible" re-election, on July 26, 1948, the wildly unpopular and doggedly anti-communist President Harry S. Truman accepted his Democratic nomination and boldly confronted the GOP's "Do Nothing"
80th Congress:

"My duty as President requires that I use every means within my power to get the laws the people need on matters of such importance and urgency.
I am therefore calling this Congress back into session July 26th."

"Give 'em Hell Harry" got re-elected; and the "Do Nothing" 80th Congress got booted.

Today, in his final term, the wildly unpopular President George W. Bush boarded Air Force One bound for the Beijing Olympics and a meeting with his chum Hu Jintao, the dapper ruler of a nuclear armed, communist dictatorship.  Yet before jetting off, the President's spokesman Tony Fratto bid "Beijing George's" best wishes to the Democrats' "Drill Nothing" 110th Congress:

"We don't have plans to call Congress into session - it won't make a difference if Democratic leaders are unwilling to bring up a bill for an up-down vote."

Regardless, we will continue our "Speak-In" on the adjourned House floor to protest Speaker Pelosi's refusal to vote on lowering gas prices and furthering American energy security and independence.

On his part, perhaps our Compassionate Conservative-in-Chief will bring our absent Democrat Congress some "Made in (communist) China" souvenir
t-shirts:

"Bush went to Beijing and all I got was this lousy five week, paid vacation."

Bon Voyage, Mr. Bush!

House Republicans will fight on for America!

Bush has the power to bring congress back, but so does Pelosi. Nancy should stand up like man and do the right thing for all of America.
Who is McCotter? Never heard of him. He must come from a safe district. Better watch what he says it will haunt him his next election.
"The Bush Administration estimates that expanded offshore drilling could increase oil production by 200,000 bbl. per day by 2030. We use about 20 million bbl. per day, so that would meet about 1% of our demand two decades from now."

This is all a stunt. Republicons know it won't do anything for the American people to drill.  All they do is take a position on something that sounds good, but they know won't work, and they know the Democrats won't agree with (because it won't work) so that they can scream and yell.

They don't give a damn about the American public.  They just want to keep their cushy jobs and keep pocketting all the money being illegally fed to them by the corporations.
Sorry...all I heard was "WhaaaWhaaaaWhaaa"
How come republicans aren't holding a sit in for pumping up tires. It will do more than offshore drilling.

Wow they are even hating their own man Beijing George. The Repukes are in meltdown mode.
Impeach him then.  If you want to match words with action.
Wow.  That's pretty incredible.  And pretty ballsy.

http://thepajamapundit.com/
And what about the previous (Republican) Congress, which invited comparison to that much-maligned 80th Congress in 2006?

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/story?id=1955256&page=1
So, even oilmen GW Bush and Dick Cheney don't think expanded drilling is worth the 24/7 attention it's getting from Gingrich and Co.
Stern words and a wag of the finger from the Rubber Stamp Republicans in congress who aided and abetted  "Beijing Bush".
YOU brung him to the Dance!
YOU take him home!
A manly man like Bush doesn't want to get anywhere near a dark room full of congressional republicans.

Can't really blame him for that.
Dear Thad, So your're going to fight on for America. How about those of us that live here in your district? You have not done a damn thing for us back here in Michigan. Get your a++ back here and do something to help us out. GEEEEEEESSSSS.
My question for the House Republicans that are complaining is: what did you do?  I would like to know what these whining Republicans did to advance any kind of bill regarding energy policy from the time George W(oman) Bush took office.  For the first 6 years, the House was controlled by the Republicans, and they did nothing to advance other ways that the country could get energy from (solar, nuclear fission and fusion, wind, etc).  There were these huge appropriations that didn't do anything to advance America to be energy independant.  What is another 5 weeks given the past 8 year?
The Republican party is in complete meltdown mode. And people want to keep them in power by electing McCain?! This is a stunt by the GOP to save their hides by any measure in the fall.
Since drilling is only a "psychological help"(Mccain) to the American people right now and doesn't actually solve the problem it seems that the Republicans are blowing hot air and making a lot out of nothing.
Good Job Republicans.  You sucked for 8 years and you are still sucking now.  A majority is coming to politics but it won't be the Republican majority.  We have had enough of their stupid skewed platform.  Us old Republicans being forced to vote for Democrats will do so with giddy excitement come November.
I guess these guys figured they might get a little more notice if they start attacking the president.

Well, not sure that will work. The line to attack the president is pretty long. So... keep sitting there in the dark. Maybe on a slow news day the press will get to you.

Or, here's another idea. Instead of attacking the president, maybe they should attack Paris Hilton? You know, join McCain in his "Obsessed With Celebrity" tour. Then maybe the press will notice.
What a bunch of classless ignorant idiots.

Why didn't they speak up against GWB years ago? When it counted?

Which by the way is exactly why they're going to lose in November.
Do these idiots think we'll be fooled into forgetting they backed the Bush policies all these years, and are now throwing him under the bus to try to save their own backsides?  After decades of doing nothing, and a proposed "solution" that may take another decade or more to bear fruit, what difference does a lousy 5 weeks make?
Wow, I don't agree with offshore drilling but it almost seems like these guys WANT to get reelected. Could it be the republicans are finding a way to get around their horrible brand name; beat offshore drilling to death and throw Bush under the bus?
"...lowering gas prices..." How in hell are they going to lower gas prices with this election-year gimmick of drilling in pristine U.S. spots, when the oil they have 1.)probably can't be refined, because Big Oil has not seen fit to cut into their obscene profits to build refineries for all this oil and 2.) Even with refineries, it'll be years til we see this Black Gold at our local EXXON stations---probably STILL  overpriced---alll that trouble getting it out of the ground, you know...
So, Pelosi is NOT standing in the way of "lowering gas prices" unless ou live in RepublicanFantasyLand, where the Easter Bunny delivers half-billion dollar golden parachutes to retiring EXXON CEOs.
Seperation of powers, and all that. Congress, run by the Democrats for the last two years, has the power to get something done, and improve on their 9% approval rating. Just need to have a vote. If it passes, great. If fails, they tried. Nancy won't even let them vote. Now that's arrogant.
Wow, the Republican Party is simply falling apart at the seems. Congressional Republicans lambasting their Republican president. I guess we can forget about party unity In November.
Even the BIG RAT has deserted the sinking ship.
So the GOPs in congress decide to throw "Bejing George" under the bus and continue to pretend that their drilling position is real. We know the truth is in a comprehensive plan like Barack's with drilling only an appeasment to the GOP.

The problem with their strategy is that we have seen it all before. No real plans for broad and effective action. MORE OF THE SAME junk.

Not this time, folks!
Obama-Biden '08
to include the person(s) in question as it pertains to the argument at hand, what a bunch of PUNKS! from the repugnican who wrote it to all the repugnicans and their geriatric candidate johnny straight out of ancient rome mccaesar. however compared to his ideas mccrusty is practically an adolescent. given everything thing we know mcdawning could infact forget who he is by days end. should cause everyone great concern rather than obama being (half) black. it's time to send those punk repugnicans packing with their lying #&$*@!
How could he pass up a free tour of China. Even tricky dick took the tour on the publics dime. Wonder if Georges shoes are made in China. If so they will be sure to wear out before anyone will fill them. Even McCain should not be willing to walk in those shoes.
This all seems pretty worth it for 1% of our demand.  These guys are a joke.
Onceagain folks count the number of McCain stories. Who's Zooming Who?
The poor little Republicans aren't getting their way.  After seven years of doing anything they wanted, they now see what it's like from the other side of the aisle.  Long time coming...
McCotter is a Republican in the same way Ron Paul is a Republican, sort of the Libertarian-leaning, John Birch-loving persuasion, so this type of language and criticism of Bush is not out of character. It is fun to watch, though.

And oh yes, his seat is safe. Hell, even Cheeks-Kilpatrick managed to squeak through her primary yesterday, thanks to a split vote among two other qualified candidates. Michigan loves incumbents, when they're not Spencer Abraham.
That's a great t-shirt idea.
If their own president won't call them back , why should the future president Obama?

I love the smell of deperation in the morning.

Next republicans will condemn St. Ronald Reagan for terminating Jimmy Carter's energy programs that would have avoided this whole mess.

WHO CARES. And McShame has the nerve to say get congress to work. The most Absent Senator ever.
Has missed 42 straight votes in senate

JERK
What are these republican idiots talking about? Beijing George is there guy, they wanted him to be the President, what did they expect, what do they want now? It's a little late in the season to be trying to clean up the republican name at this point. The republican's are seeing what the rest of America already knows, the republican's can't be trusted to continue to run our Country! One last thing, why are these so called, politicians, people we've never heard of before? Are they lackey's sent out to do republican damage control for McCain? Maybe they're getting some of McCain's big oil money to make asses of themselves.
This whole stunt is laughable.  Why all of a sudden after 7.5 years of Bush rule and rising oil prices are the Repubs doing this?  They had plenty of time and opportunity when they were in power, but they did nothing because there was nothing to gain politically - only monetarily in their portfolios and campaign coffers.  This is all just a political gimmick to try to make the Dems look irresponsible and hide the 7.5 years of irresponsible Republican rule.

Fool us once, shame on you.  Fool us twice - no, not gonna happen.

Can't we all just get along ??

McCotter sounds like a Democrat.  Bush is right.  If they were in session, Pelosi would be preening and obstructing and not allowing a vote.

It's better she is on recess to promote her book, currently #1402 on the Amazon rankings.  She'll get less attention that way and the congressional approval ratings could climb from 9% to 10%.
The words spoken from the dunce in chief himself "Offshore drilling will not bring immediate relief, but might change the mindset"  So what on God's green earth will offshore drilling do then?  I can speculate add more money to the oilmen and their dripping pockets that's all.
Gary Schear, Bozeman Montana:  I enjoyed your comments. The President nobody wants...
Question for you:  Will Barack carry Montana.  I really believe Barack will carry Indiana (but it will be close).
'ANIMALS IN THE WILD' like wild animals in the wild they have turn on their own eating them a live. What did you expect after allmost eight years of doing nothing to tackle our energy problems low and behold the repubs have suddenly found their voice lobbying for the intrest of the American people. What could have cause this emphatic sense of urgency, a new lease on life, oh no, must be, oh i get it, this has to be the belated response to what one of their leaders who call the GOP brand dog food. No not realy, here it is a sudden flash of light must have dawn on them  its better to stay in washington and pretend to care and letting their voices be heard in the dark in the house, instead of going home to face their employers the American people with a score card that read Bush rubber stamp attendants and keeper of the status coe.Partners of big oil and the lobbist of  Kay street.Dont feel sorry for them, lets kick all of them out of Dodge.
THE ONLY "RAISON D'ETAT" FOR BRINGING CONGRESS BACK TO SESSION WOULD BE TO BEGIN IMPEACHMENT HEARING FOR CRIMMINAL ACTIVITIES OF THE CURRENT EXECUTIVE BRANCH.
How sad!!  This jerk only gets a "lousy five week, paid vacation." My husband doesn't get a paid vacation. When he doesn't work, he doesn't get paid. Perhaps if Congress was only paid when they worked....they would work a little more.
Bush has the power to bring congress back, but so does Pelosi. Nancy should stand up like man and do the right thing for all of America.

She already has.
I thought it was Riyad George but we can go with Bejing George too...

I wonder why no ever asks the republicans why they didn't take care of our energy problems when they were in charge of everything including a cowered congress and justice system?
Wow.  I'm not the biggest fan of China either, but that sounds like the man has going totally unhinged.

This is all for show, of course.  There are enough people with some amount of sense over in the Senate to put a stop to this nonsense.
GOP SCAM SCAM SCAM..... Americans are not falling for it, not this time. We will not see a drop of oil by Nov. 4th. So what your point? Silly Season...hahahah
One question to McCotter. Did you vote for Bush either time? If so sit down and shut up.
Sorry Rethugs...too late to throw Bush under the bus now to save your #$sses.  Your going down!

Obam '08 and '12
Has nobody else picked up on the obvious?  Republicans know they're in desperate straights and the White House decided to give this issue to the House members so that they can run AGAINST Bush this fall.    The good news is it's come to that; even the White House knows it's screwed.  The bad news is that there are often enough gullible Americans out there that with 3 months of the Republicans running against Bush, by November, those Americans will be saying, "see,  this guy/gal is not so bad after all, even though he/she is a Republican."   The first 11 posts on this board seem to have been played--no offense to you guys but this group is often much more perceptive.
