Obama, Bayh talk starlets, energy

Posted: Wednesday, August 06, 2008 2:31 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
ELKHART, Ind. -- It was another day of Paris, Britney and energy this morning, as Obama gave a point-by-point rebuttal to a new ad from his rival, and he and a top surrogate quipped about the celebutantes, during a town hall in this red state the Democrat hopes to turn blue.

McCain began running a television ad yesterday that referred to him as the "original maverick." The ad said Washington was “broken,” the country was “worse off” now than four years ago and that the Arizona senator would reform Wall Street and battle Big Oil.

Obama joked that it had taken McCain 26 years in Washington to figure out that the system was broken and argued that contradicted McCain's earlier assertions that America had made "great progress economically" over the past eight years. He said McCain had boasted about voting with George Bush 90% of the time, which showed he was no maverick.

"I know that Sen. McCain likes to call himself a maverick -- and the fact is there have been times where in the past he did show some independence," he told a crowd of about 1,600 at Concord High School here in a city known as the RV capital of America. "But the price he paid for his party's nomination has been to reverse himself on position after position, and now he embraces the failed Bush policies of the last eight years, politics that helped break Washington in the first place -- and that doesn't meet my definition of a maverick. You can't be a maverick when politically it's working for you and then not a maverick when it doesn't work for you and you're seeking your parties' nomination."

Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN), whose name has been mentioned on a short list of possible running mates, introduced Obama. Bayh praised Obama for making frequent visits to the Hoosier State -- he cited 42 trips -- asked the crowd to tune out "political nonsense" like commercials that feature Paris Hilton and Britney Spears and called the Illinois senator a true uniter.

"Our current president ran for the nation's highest office, promising us that he would be a uniter not a divider. Well, it didn't quite work out that way now did it? It's about time we had a president who not only said it but meant it and Barack Obama will," Bayh said to applause.

In his brief, energy-centered opening remarks Obama once again called for an "all hands on deck approach" to confronting the nation's energy challenges, but differentiated his plan from McCain's -- which the Arizona senator has called an "all of the above" approach to energy issues. Obama argued McCain's proposals focused too much on drilling and read like an early Christmas list for oil and gas lobbyists.

The presumptive Democratic nominee listed Iraq's $79 billion budget surplus as another example of what he said was wrong with America's current energy policy and with Bush's policies in general.

"At a time when were spending $10 billion a month in Iraq they've got almost $80 billion that's not being invested in services for suffering Iraqis or reconstruction," he said. "Some of this money is sitting in American banks in New York on Wall Street collecting interest while you the taxpayer are paying for reconstruction efforts in Iraq. That's why we've got to bring about fundamental change."

Obama appeared to want to keep the starlet storyline alive to try to portray his rivals as silly. He concluded by asking the audience to ask their friends and neighbors the simple question of whether they were better off now than they were four years ago.

"Do they think that the economy is working right now? Do they think our foreign policy is working right now? If they do, then they should work their heart out for John McCain, because his policies are not different from what George Bush has been offering," he began. "But if you think that we need fundamental change. If you think that we can create a brighter future and we can have a more serious politics than we have right now -- one that focuses on solving our problems instead of on Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, then I need you to vote for me."

The tire gauge debate continues.

At one point during the roughly 1 hour, 20-minute event, Obama noted that McCain had come around to his point of view -- during a telephone town hall meeting with Pennsylvania voters last night -- that proper tire pressure was one way to reduce gas consumption, after several days during which the Republican's campaign had mocked the Illinois senator for making such a suggestion. He sparked laughter when he said that "in the coming days it's going to be interesting to watch this debate between John McCain and John McCain."

The McCain campaign sent around a response to the remarks about tire pressure.

"Barack Obama's continued assertion that Americans simply inflating their car tires is equivalent to additional offshore oil drilling is wrong, and underscores his lack of understanding of this issue," wrote spokesman Tucker Bounds. "True energy independence requires John McCain's 'all of the above' approach which includes alternative energy, additional offshore oil drilling, and safe nuclear power."

The e-mail included a longer quote from the telephone town hall that showed that while McCain had noted that the American Automobile Association strongly recommends keeping tires properly inflated, he did not think that "that that's a way to become energy independent."

It's worth noting that Obama's original statement on the issue was in response to a question from a town hall attendee about what they could do as an individual to help tackle the energy crisis.

I'd almost feel sorry for McCain, if he hadn't supported  Bush's torture annd domestic spying programs. It's hard to feel sorry for such a hypocrite.
At the risk of repeating myself, McCain is no Maverick; he's more like a gelding.  To coin Paris (okay, scary; but still funny) "See you b$8ches @ the debates!"

jqa ma (Sent Wednesday, August 06, 2008 12:44 PM) I find your comment offensive.  If she would stand up like a man, she’d be declaring war on a sovereign nation that hadn’t provoked us.  I’m not a huge fan of Pelosi; but Testicles don’t give you better judgment.  This is a political stunt.  When adults respond to tantrums, the children learn to throw more tantrums.  There was absolutely plenty of time during the regular session to address the concerns of the nation.  Republicans have been blocking like a virgin on prom night.  Quit acting like because she is a woman, she isn’t doing her job and explain for me why all these men have suddenly got ‘religion’ and want to do the right thing?  While I love the smell of hypocrisy in the morning – not so much in the afternoon!
No one will ever call Obama a "Maverick". Hardcore Marxist is more like it. No compromise is this Obama loser. None at all.
If he doesn't announce Bayh...and spends this much time in Indiana seems to me that would not be a good sign for Bayh.
I just really feel sorry and baffles for the MCBush Befuffled Campaign. What people need to understand is that there is nothin bad in having a smart man run for president and smart, John McBush is not!
If he doesn't announce Bayh...and spends this much time in Indiana seems to me that would not be a good sign for Bayh.  If he was picking Bayh why would he need to spend this kind of time there.
Here's my question on the celebrity status issue:

Haven't we always elevated our President -- some more than others -- to celebrity status?  Why would we want a President we couldn't elevate to celebrity status?

It just seems the press should ask McCain these basic questions
A newspaper in Chicago, the Sun Times, ran an article examining the 'Nanny State' level of the major US cities. Chicago, Barack Obama's home town, was #1. How Chicago beat out San Francisco is unknown, but it shows the type of leader Obama would be, if he were to ever lead anything that is.
"...Our current president ran for the nation's highest office, promising us that he would be a uniter not a divider..."
Our current president doesn't understand basic math concepts, that's why his division is all over the place.  One more chink in the 's-m-a-r-t' armour.

"in the coming days it's going to be interesting to watch this debate between John McCain and John McCain."
This is some funny material - - - on par with Laura Bush at the Correspondent's Dinner 3 years or so ago.
before all you Obamatots run out and OVER-inflate your tires, know that doing so can be very dangerous and negatively impacts gas mileage.  Over-inflation leads to blow-outs and hydroplaning.
I agree.  Starting in 2004 (when he embraced George Bush), my respect for John McCain has been spiraling downward.  I keep thinking he can't go any lower and then he makes another meanspirited, pandering move.

I'm a military spouse of 17 years.  I see how military families are struggling and know that the same holds true for many nonmilitary families as well.

I know I am concerned about education, the environment, reducing our dependency on oil, etc..  It's going to take a lot to reverse the poor decisions of the Bush Administration.  We should be talking about that fact and the real issues not comparing Barack Obama to Brittany Spears and Paris Hilton.  That type of talk just makes John McCain look like an angry, old man.

Bottom line is that it is up to all Americans not to fall for that type of attack ad.  We keep saying that we don't like dirty politics and then we vote for the politicians that employs those tactics.  Time for Change !!  Vote for Barack Obama !!
he did not think that "that that's a way to become energy independent." And nobody said it was,...
But it is something each of us can do to 'help', per the question he was asked.
We have children and we want them to inherit a planet in the best shape possible. We do tune up our vehicles regularly, including tire pressure checks. We recycle. We use compact fluorescent bulbs. We turn off our vampires when not in use--in short, we do our part while waiting for an older generation in Washington to wake up and realize the planet doesn't die when they do.

I have no use for an old guy who thinks he's cute when he offers up his wife to a raunchy meat contest. I'd like the First Lady and the President to inspire and provide more than Miss Buffalo Chip and cheap shots for my kids' futures.
"He sparked laughter when he said that 'in the coming days it's going to be interesting to watch this debate between John McCain and John McCain.'"

Love that line. I hope Obama says things like this during the debates; it will surely bring on McCain's nasty temper.

I think Obama has struck on a good ad strategy--ask if people are better off now than they were four years ago. That's the central question.

(P.S. Does the MSM immediately call someone from the McCain camp to tattle-tale on what Obama said? It's amazing that McCain and his camp are able to produce statements before news of Obama events hits FR.)
Obama is such a hypocrite.  He accuses McCain of flipflopping when Obama himself has changed policies so many times people are dizzy!
I can't wait to see if Senator Obama will release an ad showing Senator McCain and President Bush hugging each other. Or another one where Senator McCain and President Bush on the day when  people in Lousiania had no food or water due to hurricane Katrina the two of them were celebrating Senator McCain's birthday eating a slice of birthday cake. The dynamic duo. Or better yet dumb and dumber.
Wouldn't it be nice the candidates just stated their own positions on topics instead of bad-mouthing the position of their opponents?

It will never happen...

Whomever Obama selects as his running mate better be squeaky clean..
PS:  This garbage about the tire pressure gauge is just childish.  Again don't fall for these type of negative tactics.

Tire pressure results to efficient fuel usage of the vehicle and definitely is not a solution to achieve oil independence... so why the big fuss Barak? It truly shows the Obama is TOTALLY IGNORANT of the issue which is a simple case that show that he is not ready to lead. He needs more 'flying hours' in the Senate to be viable as a candidate. Too bad HRC lost the nomination...

Bayh: ""Our current president ran for the nation's highest office, promising us that he would be a uniter not a divider."

Name one time that Obama has ever been a uniter. One bill. One compromise. One time when he strayed from the hard core leftist agenda that has been his entire political career. The answer is none, zero, nothing.
I'm not sure if the McCain camp has heard of this relatively new thing call 'Math.' If off shore would add about 1% to our consumption in 4 years (if the current levels stay the same) and filling our tires would save us 3% in one year, then yes, by simply keeping your car maintained WOULD save more than any and all off shore drilling. It's not that hard.

It's becoming rather apparent who's looking out for who here: McCain = more drilling, more money for Big Oil. Obama = an independent, 'take charge' of your personal consumption, more money for you.
OBAMA IS RIGHT ON EVERY POINT IT'S ABOUT TIME HE DEFINES MCCAIN CALLING  A SPARE A SPARE . I HOPE MCCAIN CAN TAKE AS WELL AS GIVE.THIS GUY HAS A BAD TEMPER AND WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH MCCAIN HAVING HIS WIFE WHO IS IN HER 50's THE JOKE AT A BIKER CONCERT HAS THAT BEEN OBAMA DOING THAT SAME THING MY GOD TRUST ME IT WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN A JOKE NO ONE WOULD BE LAUGHING . THIS GUY SHOW NO CLASS.OH MORNING JOE OBAMA IS UP IN ALL THE POLLS LAUGH THAT OFF.HA!HA!
