McCain calls for 'economic surge'

Posted: Wednesday, August 06, 2008 2:41 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Adam Aigner-Treworgy
JACKSON, Ohio -- For the second day in a row, McCain toured an industrial facility and then made a statement about the need for energy reform. Yesterday, the presumptive GOP nominee visited a nuclear facility in Michigan; today he toured the Merillat cabinet factory here as part of a two-day bus tour of the state.

McCain's message to the employees of Merillat after his tour regarded the need for a plan of action to fix the economy -- something he called "an economic surge."

"What we need today is an economic surge," McCain said. "Our surge has succeeded in Iraq militarily. Now we need an economic surge to keep jobs here at home and create new ones. We need to reduce the tax burden on businesses that choose to make their homes in the United States of America. We need to open new markets to U.S. products and we need to reduce the cost of health care and we need to end the out of control spending in Washington that's putting our debt on the backs of our children. Now's the time for action and when I'm president we are gonna get it done."

Asked afterwards what exactly the senator meant by the phrase "economic surge," campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds said, "More money in family jobs, more money in family budgets, and growing jobs and small businesses."

The “surge” does not necessarily entail new economic policies from the McCain campaign, but seems to be more of a re-branding that allows McCain to link the economy with the surge in Iraq, which he often says has "succeeded."

Today McCain portrayed Obama's economic plan as an example of what not to do in a struggling economy.

"Companies are moving overseas," McCain said. "We're taxing them out of the country. Unfortunately, Sen. Obama's plans would raise taxes on businesses even more. He's promised tax increases on income, tax increases on investment, tax increases on small businesses.  That's exactly the wrong strategy. Raising taxes in a bad economy is about the worst thing you can do, because it will kill even more jobs. What we need are policies that create jobs."

Does McCain realize he is a Republican and they were in charge of all branches for six straight years. What was he doing then. All of his buddies were in place. Why didn't he just ask?
Obama is correct. The way to solve our energy problems is to send out rebate checks.

Obama/08
How about a surge of DECENCY and TRUTH?

Can you handle that John McCain?

Will you reject and denounce Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh, who tell LIES daily on your behalf every day on their radio shows?

America's waiting John. When will you run the campaign your wife Cindy claimed you would?
More lies from McCain, and more "ideas" that have no substance at all.

SURGE SURGE SURGE!  That's all he has.
Lowering taxes in a time when we were fighting 2 wars, and thus driving our deficit through the roof, was the worst thing you could do, Senator McCain.  Paying for the war "off the books" is dishonest to the American people.  It's Enron-style accounting.
Sending tire gauges to every man, women and child in the country could work. But most of the liberals would need detailed diagrams on how to use them, else they would think they are to be used to stir their latte's.
The first policy should be to tax every business that has sent their jobs overseas.
That would move jobs back here if the tax equals the pay that would need to be paid to Americans.
I don't want to hear Americans won't do those jobs. One of the growing industries is American ex-house wives who have opened house cleaning business'
Surge and Nuclear all in the same breath makes me nervous!  I mean, will we start glowing in the dark under McCain's energy policy?
Funny....who do we have to payoff to make sure THIS surge works?
Why is no one talking about Jim Webb anymore as a VP choice?  He would be a fantastic balance and complement to Obama.
Raising taxes, having the government take over health care and the banks and the oil companies, and putting a tire gauge in every pot, are the only ways this country will prosper.
McCain is the man.Vote McCain for a future free from opec influence
Senator Obama has an "economic surge" policy as well.  By increasing taxes he will hasten the collapse of the already shrinking middle class and surge the amount of businesses going overseas and the amount of cheap imports from other countries (thus driving more American businesses under).
He's right about corporate taxes, but "economic surge" with nothing specific to back it up?  I think going negative, racial comments which people will learn were unnecessary, and the Paris rebuttal is going to sink an already lame campaign.  Barring a big event, August will be last month McCain is within single digits of Obama nationally.
Oh Boy! Here we go with the two/three word slogans the Republicans are famous for...why? Because their base is simply too dumb to digest anything more complicated or nuanced.
Surge, surge, surge...

John McCain needs a "surge" to his brain.  Then, maybe, he can figure out that he's running an absolute mockery of a campaign...one that the John McCain from 2000 would not vote for!
An economic surge?  What the hell is that? Expansion of an already bloated government? This promised ran as a conservative but has presided over the biggest government expansion in history.  Giving money to religious groups?  How is that even constitutuonal? And spreading our military so thin it is on the verge of collapse?  Why doesn't McCain address these issues if he is a true conservative.  Forget it.  Bob Barr is the only respite for the true conservative.

Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice...
This is a joke, right? Is that the ony verb the old man knows? SURGE? I thought the economic stimulus checks were to SURGE the economy..

What did you do with all the money Countrywide gave you ?

If you want higher taxes, vote for Obama. If you want poor health care for all, vote for Obama. If you want to not work and recieve government handouts, vote for Obama. If you want terrorists to think we are vulnerable and weak, vote for Obama. If you care what the French think about us, vote for Obama. If you like listening to content free speeches, vote for Obama.

If you don't want any of the above, vote for McCain.
Ha John McCain - I can talk about what we need to do.  Tell me how you plan to do it?

You can't seem to get away from the "surge" word can ya John McCain.

You GOP believe in Psychic phenomena...it you say it long enough - people will believe it.

Will - I want you to say to yourself over and over John McCain this - I am a loser and I will never win the Presidency of the United States of American.

Then you too will be a believer.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
I knew it. McSane only knows 2 things
1. Surge
2. Drill
Surge drill surge drill surge drill surge drill

Old man wrinkly man yelling clouds
HAHAHHAHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA   !!!!!!!

Desperation abounds !!
"Michigan loves incumbents, when they're not Spencer Abraham.
Chris, MI (Sent Wednesday, August 06, 2008 1:12 PM)"

HA!  It would be funnier if it wasn't so true.
Is it me or is this guy retarded. He said ZERO on what he would do. His advisor had to clarify and with that he said ZERO - a Non Answer. Not a billion here and billion there. Not one single specific. The questions is when will the press start asking for details...make him answer. He should know what he is talking about - so ask him friggin questions that require specific answers.
McCain PLEASE stop talking about the surge 'cause:

1. we're STILL in Iraq
2. we're STILL spending billions of dollars a day on a war we never should have embarked on in the first place
3. we're STILL losing our soldiers
4. we're STILL looking for Osama

If you call that success, I'd hate to see what your idea of an economic surge is.

yes, there are comments...just post them!
I guess it's safe to assume that General Patreus has approved of this economic surge?

This is cutting edge Presidential thinking...the surge worked in Iraq so it will automatically work in fixing the US economy.  Are you kidding me?  Is this the extent of what journalism is today?
Because to McCain, "surge" is an all-purpose 'win' word.
I like Obama for his policies and McCain for his comic relief. Thanks for the show, my friend, but you're one pilot that won't get picked up after this fall.
I knew he could not do it a day without saying "Surge"
Yeah John, these same policy's worked very well for us the last 8 year's so let's keep it up.
So do I get some Marines to come with me to the supermarket and see if we can bring about some reconciliation between what I have in my pocket and what the checkout lady is asking for?
a nown a verb and McSurge....Nice Platitude but real solutions please.
We will win the economic war by winning it!!  Bob Dole, Bob Dole!!
Washington has gotten to look like the overstuffed Michelin man. I don't think McCain is the man that could slow the growth of the government and gets its spending in line, but he might have a chance. For sure Obama would never do it though - that man looks at the federal governemnt and wonders why it isn't four times bigger.
This guy is such a moron! How can any one with half a brain fall for his garbage??

If you vote for this 5th from the bottom of his class as he likes to brag (as if that is something to brag about) then you deserve to suffer economically.

This time around lets vote for the smart guy!!!

PS. When is MSNBC going to fire the racists Joe Scarborough and Pat Buchanon. Talk about another couple of morons!
McSurge says:"We're taxing them out of the country."

BS. With no import tariffs they can out source the labor to a $.15 / day child labor country. What this crazy old liar meant to say is: "As long as Americans insist on a living wage we'll drive business overseas."

McLiar.
Tax increases for companies that move those jobs overseas, tax INCENTIVES for those staying here at home.
But riddle me this MSNBC, how is it that statements like these:
"We need to reduce the tax burden on businesses that choose to make their homes in the United States of America. We need to open new markets to U.S. products and we need to reduce the cost of health care and we need to end the out of control spending in Washington"

Don't illicit the same call for "details" or "specifics" that you do for Barack?  MSNBC, I am thoroughly disappointed with your commentators, the pundits and so-called journalists you have been using lately in your broadcasts.  Not only because they are obviously holding Barack to a different standard than mccain, and quite blatantly coloring mccain statements with praise while coloring Barack's statments with innuendo and doubt thereby pushing mccain's themes (see how I do that, small m for mccain, big B for Barack...subtle, like what you're doing).  But because your coverage is stupid, your pundits are parrots and bring nothing new to the discussion.  I didn't watch MSNBC News Live ever until the primaries.  And ever since the primaries ended (even though you had your hillary bias going on too), I have noticed that your tendencies now are sensationalistic with no seeming desire for or even attempt at an enlightened discussion.  Americans deserve more.  My company just laid off half of our staff...many more unemployed here in southern california.  Many more homes about to go up on the chopping block and still paying $4+/gal for gas.  Please remember your duty as a "free press".  You are part of what protects all of our freedoms.  Imagine if our troops took that responsibility as lightly as you all do.  Just imagine that.  Take a look at some of our dearly departed Tim Russert's greatest interviews and get serious please, for the Nation's sake.  Asking good questions make for good television people.  Just ask those of us who still get sick to our stomachs on Sunday b/c we know the question WE want and need asked will not be asked by you blankety blanks.

Sincerely,
Losing all respect for your network.
"Companies are moving overseas," McCain said. "We're taxing them out of the country. Unfortunately, Sen. Obama's plans would raise taxes on businesses even more. Raising taxes in a bad economy is about the worst thing you can do, because it will kill even more jobs. What we need are policies that create jobs."

Thank you, Mr McCain, for telling the truth.  How we grow our economy when we penalize business?
Raising taxes ARE NOT what drove many companies to move operations overseas. There were quite a few tax BREAKS put forth by the Bush administration that rewarded companies for going overseas. Others saw the cheap labor pool and their bottom lines and decided American jobs could be lost for the sake of heir profits. Once again, John Sydney McCain III demonstrates that he truly DOES NOT understand economics while continuing to attack Obama with one lie after another.
Well, McSurge is at it again.

We'll need a surge to save us from all the surges.  I can feel the blood in my veins surging right now.

McSurge is probably feeling surging somewhere else...but we'll save that topic for another day (EW!)

I think we should start a list of words/terms that we never want to hear again after this election.  Such as:

*vetted
*surge
*card (race card, gender card, etc.)
*dead heat
*swing state
*toss-up

I know there are more...feel free to add to list!

ahh, now he's back on message.  McSurge, where've you been?
Didn't Sen McCain get a campaign donation surge from Oil company execs?
Oh look...McCain is coining catch phrases now.  This is the campaign surge - toss out a bunch of buzz words and promises that fit in a sound bite, but with absolutely no explination or even expanding on the issues.  McCain, you are done.  You are nothing.  Go home and let the rest of us get on with fixing the country.
This from the man whose party gave tax breaks to companies who moved overseas.  Perhaps if the Republican party didn't make it so attractive for companies to move, and if they would vote for a comprehensive health care plan (health care can cost companies as much as their product)they could better compete at home and in the world markets.
REPUBLICAN PLAY ON WORDS, NOW EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THEM THAT COMES ON TV WILL BE TALKING ABOUT AN "ECONOMIC SURGE"

WHY ON EARTH WOULD ANYONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WANT TO USE THE WAR TO FIX UP OUR ECONOMIC DEBUCLE?

JUST THE THOUGHT OF THE WORD SURG BRINGS TO MIND THE THOUSANDS OF SOLDIERS WHO HAVE LOST THEIR LIVES, THE SUFFERING FAMILIES OF THESE SOLDIERS, MOTHERS, SONS, DAUGHTERS, AUNTS, UNCLES

DON'T FORGET THE IRAQ PEOPLE WHO NO ONE WILL GIVE US THE TOTAL NUMBER OF LIVES LOST BUT WE KNOW IT IN THE HUNDRES OF THOUSANDS

WHOEVER IS RUNNING MCCAIN'S CAMPAIGN AND HE HAVE SERIOUS ISSUES, THESE JOKES, WAR REMINDERS, POKING FUN AN INVADING PEOPLE'S PRIVACY WITHOUT THEIR PERMISSION (PARIS/BRITTNEY) IS NO JOKING MATTER
When I read this, I remembered an old Hudson & Landry routine where this old fart coughs, and thsn says "I shouldn't be smoking.  AM I??"
When I read this story, I thought "I shouldn't be drinking so much" then, "AM I?" kicked in.  WTF is this guy talking about????
A tax is defined as a financial burden on a society. If McCain wishes to lower taxes he should support our leaving Iraq, the tab according to noble prize winning economist Joseph Steiglitz is 3 trillion dollars.
