Pawlenty praises and criticizes Obama

Posted: Wednesday, August 06, 2008 4:25 PM by Mark Murray
Filed Under:

From NBC/NJ’s Matthew Berger and NBC’s Kelly O'Donnell and Alex Wall WASHINGTON, DC -- When Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty was asked at the National Press Club what qualities are most important for a vice presidential prospect, he was brief -- “discretion,” he said.

Pawlenty -- at the top of most short lists for McCain’s vice president -- held a bit of an audition here in the DC area today, speaking both before a Republican leadership summit and the Washington press corps at the National Press Club. Pawlenty used the opportunity to make the case for expanding the Republican Party to welcome so-called “Sam’s Club Republicans,” essentially those of the middle, working class.

“People deserve and expect a more effective government at a better price,” he said.

But Pawlenty may have made the most lasting impression by a remark he gave in the morning in front of GOPAC's leadership summit, suggesting it was the message of McCain’s opponent that may resonate the best with voters.

“Say what you will about Barack Obama, and I say a lot of negative things about him,” Pawlenty said. “We need leaders, and John McCain is positive as well. People gravitate when you’ve got something positive to say.”

The comments were surprising for some who might be tasked as the campaign’s “attack dog” if chosen as McCain’s running mate. It also came on the heels of a series of negative ads by McCain.

Asked about the comments later, Pawlenty said some negative campaigning is inevitable and unavoidable. “His oratory is one of we’re going to do big, tackle big national issues,” Pawlenty said. “If you look at his record, there’s not one issue of major national concern that he has led the effort on.” Pawlenty also criticized Obama’s lack of experience, saying “it is simply a matter of fact that less than four years ago he was a state legislator.”

McCain advisers cautioned to not "read too much into" Pawlenty's warm praise of Obama. They described Pawlenty as "one of our strongest supporters" and that he plays an important role on Sunday shows and interviews.

Advisers add that Pawlenty has "not been shy" about criticizing Obama, and they point to his leading role on a McCain conference call in which Pawlenty welcomed Obama to Minnesota and also provided "hard contrasts" on Obama's views on energy. Stepping back, they noted that Pawlenty's praise of Obama's upbeat tone may make it easier to highlight a break when Obama chooses to go negative.

In his speech today, Pawlenty also said Republicans are having a hard time in elections because “we are running against competitors that give the impression they are giving away free stuff.”

Instead, he suggested an expansion of the themes of Ronald Reagan -- a common Republican refrain -- while acknowledging many the Republican Party seeks to engage do not remember Reagan’s tenure well.

"Ronald Reagan was pragmatic," he said. "We have this hyper-polarized political environment, as to some extent Reagan had in his time as well. But when push came to shove, he got things done."

Ahhhh yes...
Republicans doing what republicans do best.
Talking out of both sides of their mouths continuously.
Republicans see things in varying light. Everyone has some good and not so good qualities about them, and Republicans can appreciate each and comment on both.

Democrats see things in black and white. For them, Democrat equal good and Republican equal bad. No other choices are necessary or required.
There you have it. Even one of McCain's top contenders for VP praises Obama. Watch for some negative comments tomorrow against Obama by Pawlenty after McCain's handlers get ahold of him.

Pawlenty appreciates Obama's story and his charisma. I think most eveyone does. When it comes to policy though, Obama, to be blunt, is a left wing radical. That's not where many people of this country are right now, and that's why I think Obama loses this fall.
"... it is simply a matter of fact that less than four years ago he was a state legislator.”
-Tim Pawlenty

It is simply a matter of fact that less than four years ago Pawlenty was a state executive. He for one should not trash someone's state experience.
Pawlenty is wrong. According to the MSM, people gravitate toward negative ads. Their case in point was Obama's poll advantage decreasing after McCain's ad featuring Paris and Britney.

Also, Obama tries to keep things positive, focusing on policy and recently returning from a triumphant overseas tour. But he got SLAMMED in the MSM as presumptuous and arrogant. So no, positivity doesn't work--not in the MSM anyway.
Two posts. Two differing positions. And what side is the more divisive and cynical?

I read a similar column regarding the statement  made by Pawlenty and it was much more detailed and praised Barack Obama's demeanor in a more positive way.

What FR has here is certainly not the quote - their message is diluted.

WHY? FR - WHY would you make it seem, that what Pawlenty said wasn't as powerful as when he said it?

Why would you paraphase it - when you could just quote him?

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA

One of the best things that has happened for the Obama campaign is Sen. McCain's decision to bring the Rove crowd on board.  I sincerely hope they keep doing their dirty deeds.  Gov. Pawlenty will be severely punished for reminding Sen. McCain that he promised a civil campaign - a term not found in the Rove dictionary.
Tess Bryant - what a sweeping generalization!  There are plenty of people on both sides who see things in terms of black and white.  Barack Obama is far more capable of seeing the nuance and listening, respectfully, to the other side of a debate.
This Pawlwnty guy has an ethics problem like John McCain.
Because to McCain, "surge" is an all-purpose 'win' word.

Kind of like Obama using the word "Change"?
Lucky for McBuffaloChip that it was Pawlenty and not some celebrity wannabe Sunni or Shia whiner living in Czechoslavakia with overinflated tires surging across the Iraqi/Pakistani border while looking for an oil well doing the attack today.  Otherwise I would be concerned.
McCoo-Coo needs to swallow a box of chicken nuggets.
"Democrats see things in black and white. "

After 8 years of President "I don't do nuance" Bush, you really want to say that DEMOCRATS see everything in black and white?

Really??

"You're either with us or against us."

Just one example of many.

We're finishing up an administation that has seen the world more in "black and white" than any administration in this country's history...

....and you have the nerve to say that DEMOCRATS see it that way?

That's rich.

Just wow.
Does anyone notice that most Obama bashers use their first and last name, city and state.

Just seems a little much for me.

trolls.

As far as this post, Even the repubs can see the inspiration of Obama
ANOTHER REPUBLICAN FOR SEN. OBAMA.........SWEET

OREGON GOP CANDIDATE ENDORSES OBAMA

The Republican Party is famous for keeping members loyal. But in Oregon, at least, that no longer seems to be the case. First Oregon GOP Sen. Gordon Smith promoted his ties to Barack Obama in ads. Now a Republican candidate for the House is endorsing the Democratic candidate. The Politico reports:
A guy gets 70% of the Republican primary vote, and how does he repay his party? By endorsing Barack Obama for president and the Democratic challenger to an incumbent Republican for Senate. At least that's how Joel Haugen, challenging Oregon Rep. David Wu, decided to thank his party's leadership for their support.
Haugen, a businessman and Army veteran, is running an uphill campaign in a district Wu has held onto against good Republican challengers. So instead of embracing fellow Republicans in a state that's moving increasingly left, Haugen is falling in line with Obama, and he's is listed on State House Speaker Jeff Merkley's website as a backer; Merkley is the Democratic nominee against Senator Gordon Smith.
The endorsements aren't something Haugen is hiding. "We certainly understand why people are so surprised to see" Haugen backing Obama, the campaign writes on its website, citing the Democrat's positions on foreign policy and the economy over John McCain's.
But Haugen's is a position that causes the Oregon Republican Party some heartburn. The state party is continuing to offer tacit support for Haugen's candidacy (though they're not returning his phone calls) while local party officials have shut him out of some events, PolitickerOR reported over the weekend.
Oh oh, somebody got's some 'xplaining to do. I guess Pawlenty didn't get his talking points from Davis and Schmidt.  These Rove offsprings won't be happy.  According to them all of our problems are Obama's fault.

Pawlenty actually sounds reasonable, so that probably means he won't get selected as VEEP.
Tess Bryant - what a sweeping generalization!  There are plenty of people on both sides who see things in terms of black and white.  Barack Obama is far more capable of seeing the nuance and listening, respectfully, to the other side of a debate.

Proof please. Certainly it's not something you read around here or in the MSM. Obama has never strayed from the leftist agenda. McCain has strayed many times from the Rights agenda. Democrats see things in black and white. Republicans in shades of gray.
Has anyone thought about what a "buffalo chip" really is?  Would he have offered her up as "Ms Rocky Mountain Oyster" to score votes in CO?
The only persons to be criticized are the Republicans who put George W. Bush in office and who instigated the contrived war in Iraq which has cost the lives of thousands of American lives.
JOHN MCCAIN HAD A FUNDRAISER ON HIS OVERSEAS TRIP IN LONDON AT THE HOME OF THE RICHEST EARL AND THE MEDIA FAILED TO REPORT IT.

HERE'S THE LATEST FUNDRAISER NOT REPORTED

For a blueprint of greed, everyone should see Bill Moyer's latest show (PBS) on the Abramhoff scandal. Turns out that Robert Reed, Christian Coalition leader, and one of the biggest unindicted co-conspirator in the scandal, is giving a fundraiser for McCain this month in Atlanta.
McCain is benifitting (still) from the shady Keating 5 type slush fund of the K Street mafia led by Grover Norquist.

ALL ALONG THE LINES OF CHARLIE BLACK, PHIL GRAMM AND JOHN MCCAIN IS ASKING FOR OUR VOTE

SO OUT OF TOUCH AND JOHN MCCAIN IS ONLY INTERESTED IN THE RICH NOT THE ORDINARY WORKING AMERICANS
This Pawlwnty guy has an ethics problem like John McCain.

Isn't John Edwards on the VP short-list? How come we never talk about John Edwards mistress?
McDunce just does not get it.  We are tired of being called unpatriotic, whiners.  The crap that the dunce in chief ushered in needs to go.  We all need to hunt for Rove and make a citizens arrest and haul is butt up to Congress to answer questions, and when he invokes the 5th or does not answer strap his ass to a board and waterboard the MF.  I bet he will sing like a canary.
Pawlenty will get his comments in line soon enough.  Somewhere in the bowels of Chevron or BP there is an administrative assistant, married to a plumber, who will eagerly cough up $50,000+ for the campaign of Sen. I Know What It's Like To Be A Hostage.  After that, in the beholder's eyes, Obama will suddenly look different.
"Democrats see things in black and white. For them, Democrat equal good and Republican equal bad. No other choices are necessary or required."

You have it reversed. This isn't just me saying it, it's common knowledge. It's not that you guys are bad, it's just that you guys are wrong on policy issues. When Republicans put forth an idea that works, we'll listen.
"Kind of like Obama using the word "Change"?"

I'm just glad one of my comments got through.
All the hype about Obama's lack of experience is just that. In fact it is a fresh pair of eyes that give him an advantage. So ask yourself, what are we afraid of, because its fear of change that's driving this misconception.
IDTT..a buffalo chip is ...dried buffalo dung...
So what was Ronald Reagan before he became governor of California?

An Actor!
The latest polls find McCain ahead in Florida, Obama ahead nationally, and Gordon Smith pulling away in Oregon. Full roundup: http://campaigndiaries.com/2008/08/06/wednesdaypolls/
{{ McDunce just does not get it.  We are tired of being called unpatriotic, whiners. }}

Easy solution to that. Quit being so. Take on a little self reliance. Take on some personal responsibility. Don't blame others for your problems, and pretty soon you'll be a conservative.
Obama's upbeat tone hasn't had much of a positive effect on the tone of 90% of his supporters here, who believe all Republicans to be sub-human.

Unfortunately, if you listen to him long enough you can see why.

He's a politician, he raises money from big influential groups in large amounts via bundlers, he makes speeches, he changes positions for votes, he distorts his own record, he has suspect associations, he has flaws and weaknesses, he is highly partisan, he acts in certain ways to get votes and as a Democrat uses the tried and true method of accusing opponents of methods he himself employs.

He's a more interesting and polished John Kerry, without the military experienced.  He co-opts, triangulates and bends with the political winds.

The One.  And the Same.  Don't expect me to genuflect before the shrine anytime soon.

Oh well, I guess this means that Pawlenty is out of the running for McSame's VP  after he commended his rival. Do any other Obama supporters cringe at the thought of Bayh for VP? He is about as exciting as vanilla ice cream. He is definitley last on my short list.
"I noticed msnbc won't show the entirety of Paris' ad...
A Charles, LA, CA (Sent Wednesday, August 06, 2008 3:49 PM)"

KO played in in its entirety last night on "Countdown".  Not sure why other shows aren't - maybe due to time constraints?
So WHERE is this "clean campaign" John McCain said he was going to run and run it from " The Straight Talk Express".

ALL I've heard are lies, innuendos, mis-statements, half-truths, mis-quotes, and stupid juvenile ads.
How about giving something of SUBSTANCE for once.

Mc Cain chided Obama into going over-seas, and when he does, all Mc Cain can do is criticize him.  Now comes word that he had TWO attack ads ready to go.  One if he went, and one if he didn't.  So Obama was going to lose either way.

Mc Cain criticized him for "looking too Presidential" and there-fore pre-sumptuous,  especially in Germany.
And for wanting other countries to "like us".

SO WHAT !

Obama is applying to be President, as with ANY job, wouldn't one WANT to LOOK the part of the job they are applying for !?!

AS for wanting to be liked, shouldn't we WANT THAT TOO!?  If we are "LIKED" then that helps build cooperation and understanding between different countries and cultures and their peoples.

And by the way,  Your campaign slipped up with the attack ads.  On one done earlier in the week, the question was asked if Obama was ready to lead.
And on one done in the last few days, your campaign mocked his popularity by comparing him to . . .
MOSES!? Complete with the scene from the Charlton Heston movie: "The Ten Commandments" where MOSES parts the Sea!?  YOUR campaign compared Obama to MOSES -- and you then have the stupidity to ask if he ready to LEAD!?!?!

To paraphrase a certain cartoon character,  your "Straight Talk Express" has "taken a left turn at Albequerque" And now all your tires are flat!

No Wait! I take that back.  I have too much respect for that cartoon character to compare him to McCain.
And it also does a dis-service to the people who actually live there !

And now that McCain has dragged Paris Hilton into the frey of the 08 Presidential race, she has run her own ad in response to the McCain ad. Paris now says SHE is also running for president, and she now needs a running mate.  I think she should choose Britteny Spears.

Now THATS a HOT TICKET ! ! !

You just proved the point you were trying to refute.
No Cynics Allowed (Sent Wednesday, August 06, 2008 4:41 PM)

No Cynics:

Your side.

And what is cynical about stat8ing that Pawlenty praised Obama. Is that not what the storyline reports. And if you don't believe that the McCain handlers are not on the phone right now with Pawlenty discussing how they can clarify and/or reverese that praise I have some nice swamp land in Florida for sale. Plus blame McCain, he makes people cynical.
Has anyone thought about what a "buffalo chip" really is?  Would he have offered her up as "Ms Rocky Mountain Oyster" to score votes in CO?
IDTT, Laurel, MD (Sent Wednesday, August 06, 2008 4:55 PM)

Do you know what the street meaning of "my baby daddy" is? so what did Michelle offer herself as?
Obama is positive. He has a plan for this country and does not use negativity to discuss his policy. Unlike McCain who only knows three words, attack, surge and drill. Where is the policy?
Tim Pawlenty is personally liked throughout Minnesota however many of us in Minnesota would not see him ready for the position of vice-president. Governor Pawlenty has had a "no new taxes" pledge that has resulted in raising "fees" throughout state and local government that have caused lots of hardship; he,as well as the federal government)has been resistent to putting in the necessary funding for infrastructure  to avoid tragedies like bridges falling down; and he has picked some very, very unpopular people in his administration (former head of Education and the current Lt. Governor - who also had been the head of Transportation at the time of the bridge collapse). There are actually Republicans that wouldn't vote for a McCain/Pawlenty ticket to avoid having the current Lt. Governor as Governer! As a life-long democrate I agree with McCain that Tim Pawlenty has a bright future ahead of him in the Republican party but I cringe at the thought of him being in a position so close to the presidency any time soon!
complain if things are perceived "negative" and now complain if "positive."  You all are taking your lessons from BHO quite well.
Does anyone notice that Mccain has troubles speaking and making sense.  Who else can you think of that was president that had the same problem...... and look how far it got us.  We don't need another fraternity bother running our government again.  I'll take intelligence over his kind of "You pat my back I'll pat your back" experience.

America, We made this mistake twice already, please think before you vote this time.  Don't let these brainwashing tactics take over our minds.  Everyone has a their own brain for a reason, it's for you to control.
Dee:

John Edwards doesn't have a mistress.  He has a non-traditional family.
I wonder if Pawlenty was in the stall on the other side of Larry Craig's...you have to be careful with some of these republicans
Tess Bryant, Mobile AL

What would you know about shades of Gray?  The shades of Gray are the areas where the Republicans manipulate people like you, with their lies and hypocricy.  That's not a Gray area, it's a black hole of morality.

I suppose you are part of the 30% that still supports Bush, right?

You probably wouldn't answer that one honestly either, since you don't want to look like one of the last loony idiots that supports the worst President in US history.

When your party gets CRUSHED in November, good luck trying to convince people that your opinion is in the majority.

You're incoherent. Could be oxygen deprivation.  Breathe, for God's sake.
PT 1….
John McCain has received two million dollars from the oil industry, and now he want to give them a four Billion dollars tax break, when they are raking- in record profits on the shoulders of America. So, John McCain said, “Our dangerous dependence on foreign oil has been thirty years in the making, and was caused by the failure of politicians in Washington to think long-term about the future of the country.” What John McCain neglected to mention was that during those thirty years, he was in Washington for twenty-six of them. And in all that time, he did little to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Not to mention, that out of the last twenty eight years, twenty of those years, our nation energy policies were manipulated by an oil man in the Whitehouse representing his party interest (George Sr.12 years. George Jr.8 years) that have all but destroyed our Country.
Here is some straight talk. When John McCain was running in the Republican primary he never mention or addressed anything about this nation energy problems. After the primary,  he saw that Barack Obama energy position along with his other ideas was getting footage so he flip-flopped, and quickly turned into Mitt Romney. The Straight Talk express at its best. Although Jack Cafferty is one of my favorite reporters in the media today, they are wrong! So here my question to you: Why do Jack Cafferty and Politico David Paul Kuhn and Kenneth along with countless others in the news media find it so amusing to report on Barack Obama supposedly flip-flopping and gaffes, when John McCain have twisted on more issues to have started a tornado with his silly shenanigans, then any Politician in recent history beside Mitt Romney, not to mention his long list of gaffes. Yet, they fail to give equal negative coverage. Can I be sensing media bias? After all, Barack Obama has received 72% negative coverage, when they have reported on him. WHY? America has to stop acting like they don't know the difference between right and wrong. Thus, John McCain campaign is represented by lies instead of real ideas and he has a serious character issues to say the least!
Finally, there are those who say that John McCain’s new ad depicts Barack Obama as trying to present himself as a messiah, well I beg to differ. I believe that John McCain new ad tries to depict Barack Obama as being as old as Moses, when John McCain himself is old enough to have been Moses childhood buddy!
Dee, John Edwards hasn't been on the short list for awhile . . .
Dear Tess,
I live in Arizona, supported McCain passionately in 2000 and have been his constituent for years.  Since then, he has changed his position so many times, I can't keep up. If this is "shades of gray", it needs a little work.  I have researched Senator Obama extensively since 2004 and he has my vote.
