First thoughts: More Clinton drama

*** More Clinton-Obama drama: It now has been exactly two months to the day when Hillary Clinton officially ended her candidacy and endorsed Obama. But even two months -- and it seems longer ago than that, doesn't it? -- can’t erase the Clinton drama, even as polls show that women and Clinton’s supporters are firmly behind the Illinois Democrat. First came the Bill Clinton interview in which he wouldn’t say that Obama is qualified to be president beyond the requirements set in the Constitution that you have to be 35 or older and born in the US. And now -- right before she stumps for Obama tomorrow in Nevada -- comes a YouTube clip of Hillary telling her supporters that she wants a “strategy” to have her delegates heard at the convention. (After talking to a Dem operative, Clinton must approve, in writing, for her name to appear on the ballot.

VIDEO: Sen. Hillary Clinton wants her delegates to be acknowledged at the Democratic National Convention, saying it will help unify the party. NBC’s Andrea Mitchell reports.

So this is in Clinton's power whether her name is put into nomination, not Obama's nor Howard Dean's.) Watching the video clip, you can tell that Hillary still hasn’t gotten over losing, and given all of the people she had telling her that she’d be the next president, we can understand the denial; she had been preparing for this moment for nearly four years. But we've asked this question a million times and we ask it again: Would the Clintons have been as deferential (or be expected to be as deferential) to Obama if the roles were reversed? What has happened over the last few days has given Obama the high ground here.

*** Obama not tough enough? If it’s August, that means that Democratic politicos are wringing their hands about their presidential candidate’s campaign strategy, even though this guy -- unlike the guy four years ago -- is actually winning in the mid-single digits. Today, the Washington Post runs a piece that features plenty of blind quotes from Democratic strategists worried that Obama isn’t tough enough against McCain’s attacks. “[Y]ou have to counterattack,” said one. “You don't want to look like a whiner. You want to look tough." Has Obama had a negative TV ad that's broken through the clutter in either the primary or the general so far? Arguably, the best negative ad against Clinton was that Mac-IBM spoof created by a rogue supporter. Actually, Obama's ads -- even the positive ones -- haven't been anything that have changed the political debate. That said, we found these two quotes in the piece to be interesting. “We've been through two very tough elections at the national level, and it's very easy to lose confidence,” said Tad Devine. And said a Dem consultant: “One of the great strengths of the Obama campaign has been to not listen to the D.C. chattering class. They have a plan and they stick to it. But clearly, the D.C. chattering class are all wringing their hands.”

*** Time to get away? If you believe these Pew numbers about voters hearing "too much" about Obama, then Obama's vacation, which begins tomorrow, couldn't be coming at a better time. According to a new Pew poll, 48% of voters -- and 51% of independents -- say they’ve been hearing too much about Obama. Is that perhaps the true success of the recent spate of negative McCain ads? What does this poll number mean? Does it mean Obama can't introduce any more information to voters because they have all they need? Does this mean he simply needs to start making the public focus more on Bush or McCain? Is this simply a response to the over-the-top media blitz Obama orchestrated during his international trip? All we know is that we want to see this question asked again and see if there's a trend.

Video: NBC Political Director Chuck Todd discusses the talk of tension between Barack Obama and the Clinton's, the latest veepstakes rumors and a new poll on Barack Obama overexposure.

*** A bundle of fun? The New York Times is the latest news organization to cover the fascinating story of McCain bundler Harry Sargeant. Our favorite anecdote in the piece: A guy who, along with his wife, gave McCain $9,200 -- but who at first denied giving the donation and then said, “I’m still not going to vote for [McCain].” A GOP source reminds us about the recent story that Obama had to return $33,000 in contributions from two brothers in Gaza. The difference here is that the McCain camp hasn’t yet returned the money Sargeant has bundled. Who wants to bet that by 6:00 pm ET on Friday that the campaign returns all of the money this guy bundled? Given the amounts of money both campaigns have to raise, there is bound to be a rogue element or two who infiltrates the campaign. It appears this Sargeant is just that, as there doesn't seem to be any evidence of a quid pro quo, which is what would make this story become bigger.

*** Mending fences? It's not on his schedule today, but local reporting suggests McCain has an additional stop in Wilmington, OH -- closed to the press -- "to meet with a small group of residents to gain a greater understanding of the difficult situation facing thousands of Wilmington-based workers at the DHL Air Park." Earlier in the week, the Cleveland Plain-Dealer reported on the role by McCain and campaign manager Rick Davis in helping a foreign company to acquire the Wilmington facility. By the way, this was one of the more impressive Dem oppo hits in quite some time. There's some research staff that's awfully proud of itself this morning, as they've made McCain have to play defense on the economy in a major swing state.

*** Not your average primary: Today, it’s primary day in Tennessee, where incumbent Rep. Steve Cohen (D) -- a white Jew who represents a majority-black district in the Memphis area -- faces a challenge from Nikki Tinker, who is black. The race has received attention because of ads that Tinker is running that features an image of the Ku Klux Klan and another one that says, "While he's in our churches, clapping his hands and tapping his feet ... he's the only senator who thought our kids shouldn't be allowed to pray in school." The primary comes just as Matt Bai has a New York Times magazine piece looking at whether Obama represents the end of black and racial politics. Cohen, who replaced Harold Ford Jr. in Congress, won his primary in 2006 because the black vote was so split. This time, he's facing a smaller primary field.

*** On the trail: McCain holds a town hall in Lima, OH and attends a fundraiser Liberty Township, OH. And Obama begins his day in Minneapolis before heading to Chicago before his upcoming vacation to Hawaii.

Countdown to Dem convention: 18 days
Countdown to GOP convention: 25 days
Countdown to Election Day 2008: 89 days
Countdown to Inauguration Day 2009: 166 days

Sudden thoughts and second thoughts

If McCain wins, will there be a new block on our tax forms “Do you want to donate all of your remaining income to big oil”…Yes…No?

If McCain wins, will big oil build enough new refineries to accommodate all of their new oil from offshore drilling, or will hell freeze over first?

If McCain wins, which will get fixed first; Alzheimer’s or the pothole on the rickety bridge in my neighborhood?

If McCain wins, will two consecutive negative campaign ads become a positive?

If McCain wins, will futures trading on the incontinent diapers market be allowed?

If McCain wins, will Dell Computers build a new line of presidential computers with no memory?

If McCain wins, will the new supper hour be the current early bird special time & the new early bird special time becomes the current lunch hour?

If McCain wins, what’s the higher number by Jan 19 2013; number of military deaths in Iraq or the number of pardons given to the W administration?

If McCain wins, what will have lower value by Jan 19, 2013; our reputation in the world or the GOP dog food brand?

I cannot sleep at night until I get these answers.
Those strategists are right, the Obama campaign ISN'T hitting hard enough.

One easy way: start getting some surrogates to take one for the team and get out there slapping McCain!

More on this here:

they need to just get over it hillarys voice will be heard i mean she is speaking at the convention.  these people need to get over her losing, this is politics not religion, its like a sport when you lose you lose and then try next time.

Actually, I believe the polls recently show that about 18% of Hillocrats are not voting for Obama.  Thats about 3.2million votes.  Down from what we've been predicting.  Or to coin our despicable Veep, "so,..."

I am sure we will pick up more independents without her.  AND he won't have to constantly watch his back.  No trust for Clinton's in the 90's or now.
(and I am not saying Bill wasn't a good president - he did great with the business of governing, just sucked with the character of it all)
Who cares what Clinton thinks?  Consider covering what Romney thinks on the GOP side as well.

All these is to divert attention from McCain's continuous stumbling on the trail.
She wants to lose by Obama twice...she's a loser.
Anyone calls that double or nothing....
Flipping the coin has been done. Why does a foul air begin to fester...
She says one thing then fans the flames of political seperation...
she must be smoking that cuban again....?
and believes she's been wronged again...
so take it out on the party Hillary?...
Howard Dean needs to take someone out to the wood shed....
the sooner the better...
I knew she was up to no good. They better not do anything crazy at that convention because Obama has over +20 Mill "real" supporters.
I have to assume that Chuck Todd’s assessment last night when he stated NH is a little reluctant to support Senator Obama because of Massachusetts’ first African American governor, Deval Patrick, has been a bit of a failure.

Well, let’s hope no one in NH casts a vote for president in November based on this. We should be looking at the Republican Party, not a MA governor.
But then Michael Dukakis wore a helmet, and for some reason that didn't qualify him to be President. So I really don't know what people think when they vote.

Michael Dukakis is just one more democrat, who like President Carter, has been ridiculed all these years. But Michael Dukakis is the last governor I can recall who actually enjoyed being our governor.

I think there are conservatives in this country who have a tendency to tie Michael Dukakis to the big dig. And if they do, it’s a false assumption. Governor Weld and Governor Cellucci, two Republicans, are just two, but the list is endless as to who is responsible. And they were all republicans and they all have ties to GWB. Every one of them. It was the republicans who were in office and looked the other way when the costs starting escalating. They didn’t want to hear about it.

Michael Dukakis gave the project a thumbs up but had nothing to do with the problems that ensued over the years. He wasn’t the guv'na.

But he was a good man. I used to talk to him all the time when he took the "T" to the State House. Very friendly and respectful to everyone who approached him. Not that that accounts for anything anymore.
Now, in plain sight, the Clintons are undermining the Obama candidacy.  Anyone who believes they'd get a fair shake dealing with this despicable couple are just plain stupid!
Maybe, if Obama would make a very public apology for allowing his campaign staff to call Bill Clinton a racist, that would help.
The Clintons have become like the Night of the Living Dead zombies, worse than any energizer bunny! Hillary and Bill: take our advice. We are wealthy, white, middle aged and female, but we REJECTED you. We are also well educated and we know that Obama is the future and you are the past. When we do elect a woman, and we will, it will be one that has won on her own merits, not by staying married to a serial womanizer and saying anything to get elected. And just so you know, you'd better straighten up or we will be ripping that welcome mat out from under you--You are on the cusp of ruining any chance of a political future if you don't STFU --and we mean soon!

The Clintons should just go away.  Clinton, McCain and the Bushes are very corrupt and of the old. We want to move forward.

Chuck, NY - you are hysterical and those are very valid questions.  Inquiring minds need to know.  especially love the thought of a future's market on depends.  that was funny stuff.
Ummm...

I saw that YouTube clip of Hill on MJ this morning.

I think this another case of manufactured drama by the MSM.  Viewing it without their commentary, I didn't see her encouraging a revolt or anything like that.

Bill comments - yeah, I got the message there.  Hill's comments?  Not so much.
Silly Hillie would be a better president than McBlinky but so would Paris Hilton and Paris Hilton is cuter than the Pillsbury doughgirl but she's not as smart as Obama.  So choose Obama for president and let's let Mrs. Clinton go back to NY asap.
PLEASE stop posting the link about Edwards...who knows if it's even true! And believe it or not...any promotion at all will play against the DEMS. No doubt he will be asked to step aside and not speak at the convention now.

Edwards' message on getting our arms around poverty is what is important here!
Has mythomania surfaced to the top again?
Are the med's changes caused this rash of seperation?
Or is this the, "feel sorry for me women because I have to put up with these bastard men all the time...
When will she learn it's Bill not all men...playing the disgruntled female only goes so far...Hillary.
This thing isn't over until Hillary says it's over.

Go Hillary!!

Hillary/08/12
LB, Virginia - Amen, Sister!
OK - scratch what I said earlier.  WOW!  I should have read some of your posts before I wrote that.

I still stand by my first reaction, but maybe I was trying to give her the benefit of the doubt.  This is going to get U-G-L-Y ugly.
Like VP Dick Cheney said when asked by a reporter `what he had to say about the fact that the majority of the American people are against the war in Iraq, `Cheney said "SO?".  `so I say so?, John Edwards cheated on his wife when she was very ill,-- So McCain cheated on his wife when she was very ill ALSO,  So the Repubs have no room to talk.  THAT'S WHAT THIS WORLD HAS COME TO;  So what?
Maybe, if Obama would make a very public apology for allowing his campaign staff to call Bill Clinton a racist, that would help.

mend the wounds (Sent Thursday, August 07, 2008 9:47 AM)

Exactly! That man has had no respect for the Clintons. The Clintons made it possible for Obama to be where he's at today, but he's shown no respect at all for Bill and Hillary. And those trumped up racist charges by Obama really frosted my behind. Now Obama is trying to pull the same stunt on McCain, and the McCain campaign did the right thing by throwing it right back into Obamas face. That's what Hillary should have done, and if she did, we'd talking about if we would be letting Obama talk at the convention.

Oh ! forgiveness sake. Its time to see about the Olympic area of activity and go on pass insights and analysis of the Clinton dishearten setting.
Unlike my fellow Obama supporters, I give respect to the clintons. this drama makes me sick, Do they really want to lose again this year. She will never be President, no matter what they think, the republicans have been waiting for her and Bill for 7 1/2 years, the dirt they have is unbelivable. She cant
win now or in 2012. Just like she didnt understan how to run a campaign she doesnt understand most people
dont want her, they dont want Bill. Sick of the drama that goes with them. Count on them to disrupt the
convention, Obama wins anyway and thier legacy is mud.
Hilary the only ones who want you is a few old women
and the GOP, the GOP wants you bad.

Obama/Biden
another old white woman from s.c.
did any poll ask if too much had been heard from mccant?  cause I have not only heard enough garbage from him but way too much garbage from mccant.
McCain's VP choices are doing a better job of attacking Obama than Obama's potentials are doing for him. We hear Romney and others out there skewering Obama. But, Obama's choices give him as much fighting power as Edwards gave Kerry--none.

I understand the positive tone the campaign wants to take, but that isn't feasible as something to be carried out until Election Day. The GOP and their nominees are notorious for doing a great job at character assassination. America had a great economy, etc., but decided to go for the inexperienced GWB over Gore. And, look how they believed the swiftboat crap about Kerry.

Many Americans will still fall for GOP tactics because their attacks are easily digestible and are usually memorable. They are relentless. Obama and his surrogates need to be tougher.

We don't even hear the DNC hitting back hard at the GOP as far as these character attacks on Obama go. I feel the DNC and Dem leadership (speaking of Pelosi/Reid) are letting our nominee be battered by the rival party.

We left Kerry to fend for himself against swiftboating, etc. We refuse to get our hands dirty in order to get the presidency. I'm waiting for some Chicago politics.
Hillary who?

Time to give it up Hill your time has come and gone, accept it with grace and maturity.  Your followers should grow up and do the same.
Since the media covers Obama more than McCain (and 70% of that Obama coverage is negative)and since McCain can't stop talking about Obama (mostly negative comments), it's not surprising that some people feel that they have heard too much about him.  Maybe they're just tired of the negative "news"...
This thing isn't over until Hillary says it's over.

Go Hillary!!

Wow.  I'm speechless.  Oh, wait -- no I'm not.

Hillary already said it was over HillTopper.  She said as much when she endorsed Barack Obama and 'suspended' her campaign.  Don't you watch television?

http://thepajamapundit.com/
http://cultura-civica.blogspot.com    GO TRADE FOREX !!
Romney as VP gives McCain Nev. Colorado and puts Michigan in play(Obama would have to spend time and money there).  Do the electoral college math people.  McCain/Romney equals a Republican in the White House!
To beat Mccain in a fair way all Obama has to do is show Mccain talking how he supports this or that and whip out Mccains voting record. The two do not match up!
Of course Obama isn't tough enough. That is why Europe likes him so much. They know he'll be an easy push over.

"...Hillary telling her supporters that she wants a “strategy” to have her delegates heard at the convention. "

================================================

Oh, Hillary.  Please.  Let it go.

We all heard your appeal for many months during the primary.  In fact, you ran your finances into the ground doing so.

Yes, you have many people who support you.  Good for them.  But there are many more supporting another candidate.  The only way you can say you have more is by using slippery and dishonest math (i.e. Michigan, Florida and discounting all caucus votes).

This Democrat is tired of Clintons stretching (torturing) the truth to satisfy their lust for power.  I'm tired of a two-dynasty presidency.  The Clintons already lived in the white house for 8 years already.  Isn't that enough for them?  It was enough for me.  And it was plenty of time to tarnish the Democrat brand.
Hillary was the better candidate then and many of us knew it. She should have won but the MSM fell in love with Obama.

Now Obama is not looking as snappy and suddently you hear things like...maybe it should have been Hillary all along.

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2008/08/hillarys_growing_shadow.html

Maybe she won't be the first female president this year, but she WILL be the first female president.

I guess the Clintons are bored again and need some media attention.

It looks like Hillary is starting the 2012 campaign.  Just shows that she was never in this for the best of the country...she and Bill are political animals and mostly concerned about their own power.
Off topic, but I would like to thank MSNBC for putting Martin Savidge on the morning news, what a refreshing change from the ditzy female talking heads. Nothing against females, but I hope you know what I mean. I remember watching one of the female newscasters give us a handy dandy tip on how to stay cool in the summer, " stay in the shade and drink plenty of water" (this is where the palm of your hand smacks your forehead, and you say to yourself, why didn't I think of that)and all along I was planning to stay in the sun and deprive myself of water. I just get so tired of the blond newscasters who are only there for window trim, but don't have a clue.
Sen. Obama has always said that his is an improbable journey to the White House.  No one, certainly not the Clintons, is going to make it easy for him.  It is disappointing to see a couple that has done a lot of good for a lot of people come off as such sore losers.

Sen. Obama is plenty tough.  It would take a will of steel not to go negative against everything John McCain has thrown at him.  Ever heard the expression, "discretion is the better part of valor?"  I don't think Sen. McCain, the "honor" candidate, has.

While Sen. Obama is taking a well-deserved vacation, let's see how Sen. McCain uses the week's news cycle to his advantage.  My guess is he will be unable to generate any excitement or news of substance.
Senator Clinton ran a terrible campaign. She was convinced that she would be the Democratic nominee and also that she would be President of the United States. Senator Clinton, you LOST,  get over it and stop being a drama queen you sound like a spoiled child having a tantrum. As for your husband, keep him locked up in the attic.
Great - more national coverage of obese Clinton supporters screaming and bawling like they have a severe heat rash for all the elastic holding up their pants!!!  What a turn off!!  Clinton made plenty of mistakes like cr*pping on my caucus vote for her as undemocratic and endorsing John McCain.  Keep up the negative spewing, Clinton will never be president because it takes all of us and she's losing us big time.
If the roles were reversed between Hillary and Obama...I am sure, given their personalities, Obama would not be so negative.  I wonder what the impact will be if Hillary continues to be angry over her lose at the convention in relationship to "her" votes that did not count. You see Hillary knew that she had to keep her name on the ballot because she understood that this would be her last card to play if it came down to her lose. I do not know how this will benefit the democrats or shall I say how it will really play out for Obama?  You know it's all adding up that Bill Clinton is still carrying this torch about him being a racist.  Ask, what is his point? well, as  the convention rolls around it will be in the mix somehow.
One gets the sense that Hillary's PUMAs are more interested in destroying the Democratic Party than in electing a Democratic president.  With their wild conspiracy theories regarding Hillary losing the Democratic race and their rabid, almost cult-like following of Hillary Clinton, one wonders if any concept of rationality exists among PUMAs.  They seem incapable of acknowledging the obvious.  Hillary lost the Democratic race because she ran a poor campaign but, of course, PUMAs are looking for someone to blame rather than admitting their idol's campaign was a disaster from the beginning.  The problem is they wanted Hillary anointed the moment she announced her intention to seek the presidency.  They didn't want a campaign but a coronation instead.

PUMAs, get over it!  SHE LOST!
The emperor is dancing without cloths on...The DC chattering members are scratching their heads. I am glad Obama is not listening to these DC jokers, perhaps, I should call them losers.

The people in DC live in a bubble and I am glad Obama is not paying attention to them at all. Obama should stick to his game plan and ignore the whole punditry elites that are wrong 100% of the time.

As for Clintons, when are they going to realize that they don’t own the Democratic Party? Particularly, Red face Bill Clinton. They want Obama to help with the debt, yet, they unleashed their attack dogs on him. Bill Clinton could not even credit him for a great achievement, yet, he wants African Americans to respect him. Personally, I believe Obama is going to win this election with or without the Clintons. This family has been a disgrace to the whole Democratic Party.

As for Senator Old McLame or McBush, your antics is not going to cut it. I have been searching your websites for detail proposal on healthcare, Education and Energy but the papers lack specificity. I know your traditional allies in the media are protecting you right now, but for how long will that take? I even heard McCain is having Norman Tsu problems right now but will this get coverage on TV. Well, time will tell.
The Clintons, the king and queen of ego dramas, Hillary should not be forgotten or forgiven for her nasty divisive campaign and that these two should real their egomaniacal heads is sad news. If for any reason Obama loses, the Clintons must not be rewarded in the future. And if they think the Republican attack machine would not have a field day with their baggage, they are deluded. And why do they think someone else should pay off their debt when Hillary mismanaged her campaign?  The two big myths of this election years are Saints Hillary and Mc Cain.
I wonder if all those people that jumped ship from Hillery, so early, for the egotist Obama, are having 2nd thoughts. They would never admit it but circiling around in the back of their minds. I WONDER?????
No Dem no more no Obama
Sorry Hillery.
LB - couldn't have said it any better!

The Clintons and the word deferential is an oxymoron.

Memory will assist - how did they act/interact/react with the DNC once in office?

Their actions over the decades within their own party says it all.

Why would anyone expect them to behave any other way now?  They are Dems in name only.  The party has never been their foremost concern.  Only using the party as it suited their needs at the time is old news.

Explaining the lack of support of party insiders for Hillary from the beginning.

They are pit bulls. They don't do nuance.
If Hillary plans on "making history" at the convention and in any way disrupts the limelight on Obama, she can kiss ANY chances of a run in 2012 goodbye. This woman is something else. Neither her OR Bill (nor a few holdout supporters)can accept the fact that we didn't WANT them back in the White House, can they? She's like a bad penny that just keeps turning up over and over and over again. If her so called "strategy" in any way shape or form detracts from Obama accepting the nomination she will be toast in the Democratic party.  She's already there in my book. I would NEVER vote for her for anything in the future.
Clinton won the votes of more registered Democrats than did Obama.  She represents a majority of the Democratic party.  Why shouldn't she continue her fight in pursuit of equal rights for all people?  She has a strong voice and she intends to use it.....Good for her.

As for Bill Clinton....  People might remember that of the three, Obama, Hillary or Bill, only one has ever won the White House and done it twice.  It seems to me that Obama should be calling Clinton and showing some respect.

It seems rather clear that Clinton is of the opinion that he has been the victim of a hatchet job by some in the Obama camp. Any objective observer understand the basis for his opinion.  It might do well for Obama to make a clear statement on his personal belief that Clinton is not and never has been a racist and if anything, has been a strong advocate for the rights of all people throughout his career.

The agents of Obama have smeared Clinton for political gain.  Unless he receives an apology I wouldn't blame Clinton if he never said another good word about Obama.

I agree that Obama isn't tough enough. Why isn't there a commercial or why isn't every surrogate of his talking about McCain's shift on offshore drilling and how it came shortly after a huge donation from big oil. Where is the Dem Noise machine?
