Obama v. McCain on pop culture

Posted: Thursday, August 07, 2008 11:02 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
With Paris Hilton and Britney Spears having been introduced into this campaign, check out the latest edition of Entertainment Weekly and Obama and McCain squaring off on (their versions of) pop culture. (Yes, we know... slow news day.)

And read into what you will the candidates' answers on what comic book hero they would be if they could choose:

MCCAIN: "Batman. He does justice sometimes against insurmountable odds. And he doesn't make his good works known to a lot of people, so a lot of people think he's just a rich playboy."

OBAMA: "I was always into the Spider-Man/Batman model. The guys who have too many powers, like Superman, that always made me think they weren't really earning their superhero status. It's a little too easy. Whereas Spider-Man and Batman, they have some inner turmoil. They get knocked around a little bit."

The last movie McCain saw was Indiana Jones. He said he liked it because "the old guy wins." For what it's worth, Obama said he thinks the last movie he saw was Shrek 3 -- with his kids.

The magazine writes in its introduction: "Spider-Man or Batman? Jeff Bridges or Dennis Haysbert? ABBA or Javanese flute music? Candidates Barack Obama and John McCain stated their positions on these and other world-shaking pop cultural issues in exclusive interviews with Entertainment Weekly. Whose finger do you want on the button? (Of the remote control, we mean.) See their picks, and then exercise your right to vote -- in our polls -- and determine which man's (pop-culture) platform you endorse!"

Finally! Now we're getting to the important issues for this election!
C A and Full Moon (from previous thread) -- Boys, boys, boys, boys, boys.

So good to see you two together again.  As to the polls being even, Full Moon, I like to see an "even" race, too.  Much more exciting.  So I guess I can say "yes" to that.  BUT I'll have to take C A's word for the conditions on the ground in Tuscaloosa.  And C A, my friend, I hope you're not implying that Full Moon's brain is not fully developed.  Maybe TOO developed for his own good, I'd have to say.  But if we're nice to him, perhaps he'll give us a song.

<wink and smile to you both>

Now, play nice, gentlemen.  You've made my day.
It's actually an appropriate line of questioning for McCain, seeing as he's so obsessed with celebrity.

I still can't believe we've seen a presidential candidate engage Paris Hilton in a back and forth.
500 KIA in Afghanistan.
We now return you to our latest collective inanity.
Mary Ann or Ginger?
It really is a slow news day.

Pop Culture Platform? Not interested.

Wow slow news day
Detroit’s Mayor was just thrown in Jail, that should be making the rounds soon.

Awww, First Read - not to worry!

An occasional fun post is a welcome relief from the daily slog of trying to refute lies from the McCain campaign . . . thanks for the break! :)
Jeez, First Read! It's a slow news day BECAUSE you settle for running stuff like this!  Try not to jive us about cause and effect, please!
McCain represents the corrupt culture of Washington: Lobbyists, BlackWater, KBS, Halliburton, NAFTA, CAFTA etc. You can run  but you cannot hide.

PLEASE stop posting the link about Edwards...who knows if it's even true! And believe it or not...any promotion at all will play against the DEMS. No doubt he will be asked to step aside and not speak at the convention now.

Edwards' message on getting our arms around poverty is what is important here!
Lisa
I believe Edwards was about getting his arm around something else.
Also why was it ok for the NY times to publish the unfounded rumor about McCain but not OK here
Double standard.

(Yes, we know... slow news day.)
______
Sure is...hahahahaha!
"For what it's worth"  I just don't get some of your comments. It's OK to say what McCain's movie was, but then you have to make a comment like that for Obama's?
So...you are reporting...on someone else's reporting?  Homerun!
With Obama on vacation next week, WHAT in the world will you cover, then, First Read? Couldn't possibly uncover the lies McCain speads around everyday, could you? There's news there, you just have to have the guts to report it. He's a fraud with dementia....you could start there. Or start with the hidden medical records. I'm sure your bosses won't allow it though; it's better for them if McCain wins in November. Who cares about the country? Nah, let's protect big business first!
I agree Sunshine this trivia is so titilating, I'm almost dozing off. With so much really important things for them to talk about, we get hit with what's your favorite TV show? I've had a number of posts not pinted that were about the cable news being entertainment , not news. I like you guys more than some of the others and it must be tough having to churn out interesting and factual information daily, but does the corporration that owns you not have enough money for some extra staff. I know they are making plenty of money. But then maybe that's why Dean got screamed out of the race last time becasue on the day before he dared to suggest that he would bust up the media conglomerates on Chris Mathews no less.. Say it ain't so.
Wow.  Ground-breaking, Earth-shattering revelations from... Entertainment Weekly.

Seriously?  This is news?

McCain doesn't have a clue about pop culture.

Like Paris so eloquently pointed out, he's old enough to remember when dancing was illegal and beer was served in a bucket!
Clara, that doesn't add up.  You can't be a Democrat today and be self reliant.  The whole principle of the DNC today is that the government should help you get dressed every morning.

Rob, Tampa, FL (Sent Thursday, August 07, 2008 10:10 AM)

This is certainly the essence of the problem, and is turning into a critical problem for the US. A lot of people have gotten a sense of entitlement and believe the way to happiness is to vote themselves a raise and make the other guy pay for it. Working for the benefits they desire never seems to cross their minds. Their feeling is that Obama will fix all of their problems. Here's a clue for them, an inexperienced backbencher junior Senator doesn't have any of the answers, and for that matter, he doesn't even understand the questions. Obama is nothing but yet another in a long line of left wing populists that give a good speech, but have not a clue about implementing their ideas. It's almost at the point where the country deserves someone like Obama just to see how much worse things can be with him. Once that lesson is learned, we can get back to someone that knows what their doing.
Did they have comics when McCain was growing up, or wall art in caves?
McCain needs to learn pay attention to one of the central struggles of Batman;  How far can you go in the "whatever it takes" direction before you become indistinguishable from the evil you claim to fight?
I am not an american but I would like to know if there is no provision of american law which enables an electoral candidate to seek redress when his character is delibrately assinated LIKE in the case of recent anti Obama books? If this is what free speech means in America then free speech is evil.
I agree with you Sunshine State, we are being asked to discuss the importance of who watches what on TV. Gee is that the best a hot shot cable news/media/ entertainment can come up with? Our whole world is going down in flames and this is a news topic? No wonder when Dean dared to say on the Chris Mathews show that he would see to it that the news/ corporation monopoly had to be busted, the very next day they were running his scream, out of context, on an endless loop and literaly ran him out of the race. Your dumbing down America and you should feel shame guys and girls.
I voted on this poll...ha, ha.  SO stupid - but funny.  But, hey, we'll see it plastered everywhere in the coming week.  "McCain: 'Disco's not dead!'"  "Obama likes Sinatra - will that help him with old fogey FL voters?"

Sheesh.

To Clara -

(1) So glad you got a "set".  Quite nice, too.  Har, har.  :-)
I see the cons still are suffering from envy - theirs were removed in conjunction with their lobotomy.

(2) I was TRYING to take the high road so much as I didn't get the gist of what everyone was squawking about.  After reading the posts, I realized what that not everyone saw it the same way that I did.  I don't trust, nor do I like, either one of the Clintons.  If she continues to push this nomination cr*p then she will alienate most of the current dem base and shoot herself in the foot for 2012.  Of course, they don't listen to anyone but Mark Penn - and he ran that campaign SO brillantly.
-------------------------
Anyone know if Cindy McCain won the topless competition John McCain put her up for?
It's nice that Obama is taking a vacation. The MSM now can do the same. They need to rest up too so they can write even more positive stories about Obama down the stretch of this race.
Didn't Indiana Jones come out in the early 80's when mccain was in his 50's and ripping off the taxpayers with his involvement in the Keating 5 savings and loan scandal...or was it when he dumped his first wife for the younger prettier cindy? Can't recall
Just what we need people saying free speech should be against the law  sounds like a BUSH CHYNEEY supporter

This post is useless except to contine to post on the previous; which it seems you have cut off!!

OK, let's get real clear here...neither Obama nor his staff called the former President a racist...The outraged AA community did; and loudly so! Obama and his staff did acknowledge the talk was going around; WHEN ASKED!

Also, let's be clear where it all started, Bill DID play the "Card", when he alluded to Obama's victory in SC as "just like Jesse Jackson's". Neither Bill nor Hillary has ever admitted to the fact that Obama won the primary fairly; and it took a hell of a lot more than the AA vote to do it!

Hillary was actually doing very well with the AA community up until Bill whined about the Obama SC victory. Obama had made a serious push in the SC campaign, and based upon his performances in IA and NH, many AA's started to recognize him and actually LISTEN to his campaign messages. (This was happening all over the nation, not just in SC.) Hillary started to lose ground with the AA community when the news media hit this story; and SHE did not “rein Bill back in on those 'comments”.

Barack Obama has never really had a message DEDICATED to the AA community; but rather a message dedicated to the AMERICAN PEOPLE! Believe it or not; the large majority of AA's (and all other minorities as well), consider themselves to be fiercely patriotic! The Obama message resonates with anyone who is willing to listen with an open mind, and put their own personal interests aside for the good of the nation. In the AA community, this is because of the heritage of slavery, and the attendant Jim Crow years, plus a firm grounding in "Service to the Country". (Yes we know that the AA community is disproportionately represented in the Military, and we also know that they serve out of necessity in many cases; but it is folly to believe that it is not done willingly and with fervor!)

Bill continues to miss the point that his own injudicious comments derailed his wife’s campaign. He alienated the AA base at a time when Barack Obama was appealing to the entire party. That lead to some victories that Barack Obama should not have been able to pull off against the “Clinton Machine”. The “reaction” of the “Clinton Machine” was the final nail in the coffin. (Kitchen Sink Tactics). Just as Barack Obama has convinced the Democratic Party that a new form of politics is necessary for the NATION; Hillary’s campaign started pulling out all of the stops, but she pulled out one too many when her campaign decided that disparaging her opponent was the only way to go.

The Clintons continue to prove that they still “Just Don’t Get “IT”; when they continue these types of tactics against the Presumptive Nominee. They will continue to damage their “Brand” until there is nothing left. These last “comments” and “demands” will probably make that day arrive sooner rather than later.

Bill and Hillary own the American People who make up the Democratic Party AN APOLOGY!!
AMERICANS ARE STRUGGLING TO MAKE ENDS MEET, LOOSING JOBS, PENSIONS, CAN'T AFFORD HEALTH INSURANCE, CHOOSING BETWEEN GROCERIES AND GAS, LOOSING HOMES MSNBC KEEPS TALKING ABOUT NON-ISSUES.

TO WASTE TIME ON THIS STUFF IS JUST A SLAP IN THE FACE OF THOSE STRUGGLING.
With Obama on vacation next week, WHAT in the world will you cover, then, First Read?

Diane from Illinois (Sent Thursday, August 07, 2008 11:26 AM)

Good question. Maybe, if it doesn't kill them, they could write one positive story about McCain.
VON BISMARK, Vienna (Sent Thursday, August 07, 2008 11:35 AM)
No Von, it is not evil. It is a responsibility and as such is regularly neglected.
However, it can result in a healthy level of jaded skepticism and blatant disrespect for authority and institutions. THAT is a necessary ingredient for a free society. Trust no one over 3.
Anyone know if Cindy McCain won the topless competition John McCain put her up for?
End Game (Sent Thursday, August 07, 2008 11:37 AM)

I spoke to a close friend and he said she didn't do well in the topless competition but she knocked them dead in the banana talent contest
Ever wonder why there are so many people echoing McLame's talking points in this and other blogs? McLame is paying them to voice their opinion, complete with campaign driven talking points as guides:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/08/06/AR2008080603589.html
Pathetic.
PUMA's are the same. Very pathetic.
I am not an american but I would like to know if there is no provision of american law which enables an electoral candidate to seek redress when his character is delibrately assinated LIKE in the case of recent anti Obama books? If this is what free speech means in America then free speech is evil
VON BISMARK, Vienna

Von- The Issue in America is what was printed factual. if it is then it cannot be refuted in the court of law. I haven’t read any book on Obama so I do not know what you are pointing to. but if the author can back it up with evidence then its legal. In America there is no right to not be offended. I might disagree with what you say, but I will defend your right to say it. This is one of the things that make America great in my opinion
I heard there was a tape out that has senator mccain dissing America and its involvement in vietnam while he was visiting in Hanoi a few years ago.

I hope this isn't true because it would be so sad to see a real American hero turn out to be a traitor to his own nation. I feel awful
OBAMMA the UNITER its up to the one who pretends to be the UNITER to unite. How is it we hear UNITER and not think of BUSH and all the compassionate uniter decider bipartisan crap go as soon as he got power it was my way or the highway will obamma be any different NOPE down with HILLIARY up with BARRACK down with Macain UP WITH BARRACK I hope the king has new clothes  if you get what I mean.
I just hope that the voters don't base their decision in November on the list of superheroes that the major candidates like.  We need to be a more informed electorate, but this kind of information doesn't really count.  The joy of a slow news day...
Well at least McCain didn't mention listening to those comic stories over the radio.
Anyone see or hear David Gregory yesterday with Gulioni....Absolutely painful and sick....WTF WTF

Can I get the fine bloggers take on it PLEASE!!??
Chuck NY that is the funniest thing you ever posted.
"Anyone know if Cindy McCain won the topless competition John McCain put her up for?"
End Game

now that's what i call top--er pop culture!
Josie R., Rodgers Park, Texas

Republicans have CONSISTENTLY grown the government AND the deficit for the past 20 years... want figures?

As of September 30, 2007 the government reported our nations public debt was $9,007,653,372,262.48.

Carter $309.8 Billion (4 years)
Reagan 1,828.8 Billion (8 years)
GHW Bush 1,555.3 Billion (4 years)
Clinton 1,424.6 Billion (8 years)
GW Bush 2,646.5 Billion (6 years)

http://www.brillig.com/debt_clock/faq.html

In the eleven months since the annual report on the public debt, the government reports the debt has increased another $564.3 Billion dollars. Adding this in makes the revised total for GW Bush $3,210.8Billion dollars increase in public debt in less than seven years. His response, echoed by John McCain, lets cut some more taxes for the richest 1% of the people.

This brings the current (8/6/2008) public debt to the $9.6 trillion quoted above. Since September 28, 2007 the national debt has increased an average of $1.80 billion each and every day.

This means each woman, man, and child in this country is in debt $31,437.45 to pay off the bills of our national government in addition to the bills run up by their local governments. GW Bush has been adding almost $2,000 each per year $38,000 for our family each year that he has been in office.

This is the economic policy that John McCain has pledged to continue.

Hope you make over $250,000.00 a year. I don't.

NO BUSH THIRD TERM! McCain = Bush = More of the SAME
